Im surprised you didn't bring up the Mario RPG survey in the UK from a few weeks ago. It specifically mentioned Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and Mario & Luigi. It asked questions directed at character designs, battle systems, etc.
I don't mean to put the conspiracy hat on, but less than 1% of people saying that Super Paper Marios story was interesting (almost universally regarded as the best storyline in the Mario franchise) reeks of either someone tampering with the results or just being a flat out lie. Like, even if you go the "people button mashing to get the rewards" route, basically every single person who took that survey would've had to do that, and even then you'd think itd be closer to 50/50.
I think a complaint about it that may resonate with a number of consumers is not that the story was “bad.” But rather that it is ALOT. I like Mario, I like Mario stories, I fell out of Super Paper Mario cuz it was so talky (despite quite enjoying many elements of it!!!)
You have to remember that the game came out at the Wii's peak with the Casual Market. Most didn't care about a deep story, especially not for a Mario Game.
Kensuke Tanabe is not a good developer in my opinion. He just does whatever he wants, screw the consequences. Make Paper Mario a puzzle game? Sure. Try to make multiplayer and metroid a thing with several games? Why not. Ignore fan complaints everytime? Of course. Make luigi's mansion a puzzle game and take out all attempts to be genuinely scary? You bet! The only project that's worked big time for him is luigi's mansion, and even then as a huge fan of the first game the sequels were all very disappointing imo.
On a related note: a potential big piece of context folks forget about in regards to the character design aspects of Paper Mario controversy is potential legal risks with variant designs that caused a shift in how character designs are handled. The 'have you played these?' question is an indication of whether or not the person is trustworthy in their answers, assuming it's sent to Nintendo Switch owners, who Nintendo has gameplay data for.
Arlo definitely deserves a lot of Credit. Of course he isn’t the only person to miss the older style of games but he does have a decently large channel. A few series seem to be in this place currently, Zelda is an example too. After all the hype about dungeons returning, it was a huge disappointment to see the four non linear obstacle courses they chose to go with. I actually prefer the devine beasts, though I didn’t love those either. The classic dungeon design of a series of puzzles that build on each other with combat mixed in is so much more challenging and interesting. Linear dungeons would have been a great way to break up the open world. The simple, easy design is an obvious way to cater towards new players, that’s fine and all but Zelda veterans would still like some level of challenge. I’m just glad they can move on now and make a new game. By then we’ll have been looking at the same world, music and art style of botw for twelve years.
I am a Paper Mario fan, I wanna start with that. I love the first two, (Bug Fables) but Color Splash is my third favorite despite its faults. I think the problems with Super Paper Mario were absolutely over corrected, but the criticisms are not without merit from a wider audience. And that audience is worth exploring! People are taking this survey way too seriously and I'm only leave to disappointment Although if I have to give my opinion although I played the origami king and really enjoy it and thought it was great I'm definitely not buying that ttyd remake. 41 thing I played the original back in the day and did not like it, it wasn't for me and that probably hasn't changed since then. But the second reason is because I don't want to support the game that a lot of people who abuse and insulted me and a ton of other younger fans are championing. I'm not joking around when I said that I had some of the worst experiences in regards to Nintendo games when dealing with the old school paper Mario fans on the lead up to the origami kings release back in 2020, Yes I know there were probably younger friends who were toxic too but a huge and I really do mean huge majority of the toxicity came from the older fans and let me just say that arlo was not a positive figurehead during that time imo. There were so many times where they were so abusive it felt like they weren spitting on or insulting anyone who were looking forward every day online. Like I understand they prefer the older games but that doesn't mean you get to be so mean-spirited towards people who are looking forward to a newer game that's different, It felt like they couldn't acknowledge the fact that they were fans of the games after super paper mario and would try attackinganyonewho spoke out about that. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's a decent chance that a lot of the people who bought the origami king won't buy this upcoming remake because of those bad experiences with those older fans, And let's face it the main decision that will cause any changes in the paper Mario series is Which game sells better and the old school fans aren't helping themselves with how they interact with other paper Mario fans in that regard.
I kinda get your point and im saying that as someone who prefers the older titles over the newer ones Lemme make this clear though, aside from sticker star (cuz that game was really garbage) i have to say that cs and tok were alright. These games had Potential but werent fully fleshed out imo My Problem with the series is that it lost its identity after ttyd though i consider spm to be on the better side of the series. The community is also a major problem as you said. It became very divided which sucks but it'll probably never be the way it used to be. Oh andYall New Fans could also stop Hating on the older games. Its not just the old Fans who complain abt the newer ones its also the New Fans who hate on the older games Aside From all that, i honestly hope that if the Remake sells well that it'll go back the way it used to be. Or nintendo develops a game that would please both sides of the community (which is basically impossible 🤣) which would be a best case Scenario
I understand what you mean, Paper Mario is meant to be enjoyed by everyone, and if people are treating you terribly because you like Origami King, then that is awful. It is a great game. I think that the purism has gotten a bit out of hand. TTYD isn’t perfect. It has a lot of flaws. It makes me sad that people would be mean to you over just a game. I think that reason that people are taking the questionnaire so seriously is because the last time that we didn’t, the entire way that the games were made changed. People just put a random answer down on the old questionnaire, (the one that was released after Super Paper Mario), just to get their gold points or whatever Nintendo gave out for completing surveys lol. I think everyone realized that Nintendo takes these surveys a lot more seriously than they have to. I honestly think that changing the entire way that a game is made off of a survey that not a lot people filled out and didn’t really care about isn’t the best idea anyways. And “blame” always gets put on Miamoto and/or Intelligent Systems(The devs of Paper Mario) for making Sticker Star. I personally love Sticker Star. I grew up with it. It is still the coolest game to me. It has so many silly ideas, fun writing, and the music is great! And I think that is what draws people in to these games. Because they are all good.

I kinda get your point and im saying that as someone who prefers the older titles over the newer ones
Lemme make this clear though, aside from sticker star (cuz that game was really garbage) i have to say that cs and tok were alright. These games had Potential but werent fully fleshed out imo
My Problem with the series is that it lost its identity after ttyd though i consider spm to be on the better side of the series. The community is also a major problem as you said. It became very divided which sucks but it'll probably never be the way it used to be. Oh andYall New Fans could also stop Hating on the older games. Its not just the old Fans who complain abt the newer ones its also the New Fans who hate on the older games
Aside From all that, i honestly hope that if the Remake sells well that it'll go back the way it used to be. Or nintendo develops a game that would please both sides of the community (which is basically impossible 🤣) which would be a best case Scenario
“some strangers were mean online” great reason man, im totally taking you seriously
I don’t base which games I do or do not play based on some pathetic internet fanboys.
yapping like crazy
