I think the biggest factor working against it is the fact it's on the GBA. Mother 1 was already designed to be played on a television. By the time they uprez the entire game to make it look presentable they'll probably have sunk more money into it than they'll make. The only reason Nintendo ignores these franchises for years or even decades at a time is because they never made a lot of money to begin with.

    • @ryelo5448
      @ryelo5448 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

@@mariokarter13 also the fact that some of the subjects push it from being published. the very outdated and terrible representation of trans with the mygipsies is one that would make nintendo look bad, while other things like death being such a heavy theme push it even further. and because of this, i wonder if it even did get localized, would it be the same story, or would they change it too much?

Yeah, I get the intention Itoi had with the Magypsies, but that was back in 2006 and society has changed a lot since then. I didn't find them offensive, but I understand why some people would find them offensive (especially in sites like Twitter...)
Regarding other themes like death and the TaneTane drug trip... well, just give it a T rating. Earthbound Beginnings got a T Rating when it was released on the Wii U (and that is most likely because of a reference to underage drinking)

My favorite thing about Mother 3 that wasn't mentioned in the video: the rhythm-based battle system is used for musical jokes. A couple hours into the game, once the player has figured out how to chain attacks by following the beat, battle themes start speeding up or slowing down, switching time signatures, or abruptly cutting to dumb little musical interludes, disrupting your hits until you learn the songs and start planning around them. It's amazing and made me laugh out loud several times.

The fan translation is far better than anything we would probably get from a treehouse-helmed translation nowadays. Emulation is the Nintendo fan's savior. Fans do everything related to it so much better than nintendo itself, it's pathetic.

One can mod a GBA to remove most of the Hissing and board artifacts for the audio output. Even though it is competing for CPU power, the CPU itself isn't the primary source for most noise.
You'll have to clean the audio potentiometer out, polish the power switch, and add capacitors/recap the board where the stock capacitance is at its limit.
You can find guides on how to do this through google, I bulk ordered a bunch of capacitors off of digikey and have cleaned up 6 boards myself. People sell kits to fix this, but they are overpriced. Just find the right size capacitors from any electronic supplier and test the board after each swap/addition.
I actually use the sound player in Mother 3 to test the GBA's that i've done this mod on, which is why I feel I should leave this comment. The game deserves to be heard with the noise removed while playing on the original system.

9:14 It's VERY worth mentioning that the "heartbeat" is usually synchronous with the rhythm of each battle theme and can mostly be guessed, which is why some themes sound wonky or randomly speed up and slow down - it's to throw you off and make the battle harder. Not everyone has a sense of rhythm though, which is why the game works perfectly without it (on my first playthrough using a GameFAQ walkthrough before the fan translation came out, I didn't even know this system existed lol.)
Anyway, this is a surprising review to come out but I'm happy all the same. Besides the fact that this is a short and sweet presentation of the game, it's also a rational and understandable explanation as to why Nintendo is very unlikely to ever bring it out now. When most people talk about "controversy" it's just a shorthand for "this work contains bigoted storytelling in some fashion." But controversy that's actually valuable generates discussions. A work isn't the *end* of the discussion, it's the beginning.
And in a work like this, I feel like the discussion is one that would probably be worth having. Maybe the moment has passed. Maybe there are better conversations to be had now. This is a game that was written by an older, cisgendered, probably heterosexual Japanese man in the 90s and that came out in the mid-00s. Hell, at the time of Mother 3's release, I know that I myself held transphobic and generally homophobic beliefs, probably worse than whatever Itoi believed then. Maybe it's not helpful to go that far back?
But at the same time, it was written with the intention of positivity. So having an honest discussion about the things it did well *in addition to its shortcomings* is good, especially if we remember the historical cultural context. And, frankly, I feel like most people who are into the MOTHER franchise understand that. People who play these games tend to want to think about them and talk about them in depth.
It really is a shame if this is the reason Nintendo is shying away from an official release. I understand not wanting to offend or harm anyone. The more cynical part of me also understands not wanting to make decisions that will generate bad PR or hurt revenue. But I feel like there's a lot of value to be lost by *not* releasing it. And I think that, on the whole, it would be more beneficial than detrimental.
And aside from that... The game is such a masterpiece that it kind of hurts to not see Nintendo give it an official release. I want to support the creators in some small way. I want this to be a part of Nintendo's pantheon that they share with pride. I love the fan translation, and honestly I'm unconvinced Nintendo could do a better job themselves. But I still want to see them try.

This game is an actual paradox, at least from Nintendo's perspective. Releasing the fan translation word for word, as mentioned in the video, could prove problematic, but any major (possibly even minor) changes to the translation that could hinder said problems would likley cause outrage online from the fandom. The easy solution is to just not release it, but what would that say about Nintendo? I honestly think that their safest bet would be to retranslate it themselves, but damn. Lord knows we all think the direct translation would be preferable. All in all, I really liked this video, and await Nintendo's action on their enigma, if they choose to take action at all

For some reason everything Mother 3 always touches me deeply. It's a great, emotional game. The fans seem so dead set to have the game finally in an official way. It's a rare case of development hell turning out great....

Mother 3 is my favorite game.
One day I want to make a 100 hour long insanely long kojima dense diatribe about every single detail in the game.
There is nothing I could possibly say to describe how much I love this game.
I think I'll watch basically any video on it.
I've played the game quite a few times but I love it so much I make each playthrough mean something.
There are only a few games that resonate with me in every aspect as much as that game.
It has influenced the way I view video games, art, even myself.
That being said, I have made peace with Mother 3 not getting an official release.
I can play it on a multitude of systems with a processor. The fan translation is basically perfect. Nintendo would cut out some stuff. Just like the video said.
Seeing the community of fans of the series make fan games and games inspired by it have left my Mother 3 shaped hole filled somewhat.
Playing Mother 3 with Joycon Drift doesn't sound like an amazing thing anyway, I guess.
All of my hopes for it having an official release have been washed away year by year.
    I don't need it anymore.
    I've moved on.
In all honesty, Nintendo is only hurting themselves by not releasing it themselves officially.
They're missing out on all of the Mother money.
Itoi said he's not making a Mother 4 or anything so they don't need to do the "sell to gauge interest" bullshit, anyway.
The only reason I would say they should sell it officially that benefits me (that sounds selfish I know) is that it would help making my friends play my favorite game a bit easier.
I would love to share that experience more, yes.
But when that console dies...what then?
I guess we just go back to the emulators until the next release of it?
    Games can't be permanent obviously.
Mother 3 is my favorite game but I am more realistic now.
It won't give me everything I wanted like I thought it would when I was younger.
It will just be another way for me to play my favorite game.
Just like lets say the Netflix release of Evangelion.
PS: I don't mind the GBA's Noise in this particular game. It adds something to me. Those clean midi versions feel like they're missing something. But I am a Noise Rock fan so take that as you will.

Oh, and the release would just be the GBA ROM on a crap emulator with a IPS patch for the english transalation.

People dont know how deep this game is and the developers/Nintendo underestimate it's impact. In the U.S., this game would be seen as revolutionary now. I'd argue Earthbound's packaging really hurt it too. It kept it from being seen by as many people as other games. I have anecdotes to prove it.
It was packaged with a strategy guide, which was great. But this made the box unusually large for a game. And most stores that I went to as a kid weren't set up to handle a box that size. Dumb little kid me vaguely remembers seeing the boxart in the glass cases at walmart in the back where they kept the consoles along with that big bomberman multiplayer adapter thing. But that area was basically off limits as a kid, cause I knew that section was the more "expensive" area so no sense in looking over there. Plus all the games were on the other side of the electronics section. You only had a few moments to look around before your mom was done picking up some catfood or whatever so you'd wanna maximize your time and look at the more interesting game heavy section. This was back in the day when you only learned a game existed by seeing it on the shelf in a store, somehow caught a tv commercial, or your mom bought you a game magazine after wanting to shut you up for 5 minutes and stop asking for one.
I don't know how it was for other towns, but we didn't have a Blockbuster or big name rental place so I don't know how they worked back then. We had a Movie Magic later renamed to Movie Gallery. And a mom & pop rental store. And also the Piggly Wiggly rented some games and movies too for some reason. The Piggly Wiggly had these little plastic flaps with the game manuals or pictures of movies in them. You'd grab one off a wall and bring it to this little counter at the front of the store when you wanted to rent something. But the other places used the vhs boxes and game cases to sit on the shelf to promote the thing and signal it was in stock to rent. You brought those or the tape/game stocked behind it up to the counter to rent them. But not Earthbound. I don't even know if they ever rented that game out cause I never saw it outside of the glass walmart case. And if they did, the box wouldn't have fit on those shelves anyway. They were only as tall as a vhs tape. So if they used some other method to stock it, I was never aware of it. If they just stocked the game in the generic plastic case they used, well, it's a generic plastic case. Nothing to grab my dumb kid attention. So I'd just end up getting my mom to rent the Little Mermaid on Genesis or something stupid instead.
So as a kid you couldn't walk up to the video game shelf in a rental store and look at the box. You probably wouldn't look at the box behind the glass cases in a department store. So, by my experience, you likely only saw that 'gross out 90s humor' style advertising for anything related to the game. It's almost like they set it up to fail. Or tried too hard to make it succeed, but overlooked the effects of bundling in the strategy guide would mean for distribution. I don't know. I'm not a doctor. But I feel that's an overlooked factor in Earthbound's failures in the west.
