Refinishing a Catalina 22 keel Ep 211 part 1

In this video I start the process of refinishing a Catalina 22 iron keel. To do it right there are several steps. I'm not saying that this is the way, but it's the way I did it. My keel had a lot of pitting and rust with even some cavities. It's very important to remove all the rust before painting. I used an angle grinder, then a sand blaster. After that, the entire keel was treated with Ospho to retard the chemical reaction that creates the rust.

Im romanticizing about doing the bottom job myself. I just bought a new boat. But at 75.00 a foot to do the bottom job for me I think Ill pop in and say hello to the marina crew but Im just so busy with 5 daughters and two restaurants my wife would kill me if I spent the whole weekend on this project. Looks fun and I love the attention to detail. Just Subscribed!!

Thanks. Sounds like you have your plate full as it is. Sometimes things are just more productive to pay someone to do the job. I've been retired for two years so playing with this kind of project doesn't detract from other priorities.

It seems like there needs to be some anodes on that keel to prolong it's useful life. I'm surprised I didn't see any on there, but maybe there is no room in the kee; pocket.

There wasn't any mounted on it or a place where one was. That keel now has several coats of epoxy and paint. Holding up very well.
