Enjoyed this, hope I can use some of what I saw on your winch replacement with my Venture Newport 23, which has a similar winch, swing keel setup. My cable jumped the winch drum and is now tightly wrapped between the drum and winch bracket on the axle drum. I think your video will help me in removing the drum, maybe. Thanks again.
Wow... that winch! I thought I had winch problems on my previous boat. Good catch, glad that didn't cause any real issues before you found it. Hadn't even occurred to me the drum would rust through that way. Now I'm going to have to go back and double check mine. lol
@@AdventuresInParadise yikes. The original winch on my previous boat, a MacGregor V21, was a trailer winch, not a brake winch. First time I ever lowered it, my hand hit the cockpit sole and I lost control. Handle hit me 4 times before I moved out of the way. Replaced it immediately... the scar will last much longer. That was my first time ever on a sailboat. lol Quite the maiden voyage.
I literally just replaced my winch yesterday that i got from CD. So far im very impressed with it especially the larger drum which reduces the amount of turns needed to operate. Keep it up we are watching!

Nice work! I just found my winch was broken as well and ordered from CD, got it a couple days ago. I’m still in the trailer in my garage so I don’t have to sweat the pumps fir this one :) I wish I had seen this before putting the windows in last week! Hadn’t thought of putting tint on and it would’ve been a ton easier with the windows on the bench. None of these things are hard, but process and order or operation can really help. Like you said with theses old boats you can keep going and going.
Another very helpful video. What kind of paint did you use on the rudder? I'm currently stripping my bottom to gelcoat and I am probably going to use Hydrocoat by Pettit. How did you prep the rudder? Scuff, acetone, barrier coat? I was planning on possibly barrier coating my Catalina but I have since been advised to just get to the gelcoat and throw ablative on the hull. 🤷🏻♂️ I also dropped my keel last weekend. Ill be refinishing it this winter.

Yea... one time we were out an I heard a loud thud. I think that was the day the ceter broke through but I didn't know what it was!
