I think it'll be fine until people mess with it, just like any other evo-after Harley... They only really start to have problems when people mess with them... Yes my 103 has a stage one... Hopefully stage 2 soonish, but simple fact if you leave them alone they're reliable... I modify all my vehicles, my bikes, my trucks, but good on HD for doing what they have to do to keep a real v-twin alive

I have a first year EVO - 1984 FXST. That was my first (and possibly only) bike I've ever owned. What I like about it, is it is simple. I can FIX IT on the side of the road! I don't need an advanced degree in electronics engineering, and I don't need a computer (and a pile of specialty tools) to trouble shoot failures and, more than likely, I WON'T need it to be 'towed' to the dealer...
I have an '84 FXST. I got it as a gift from my father in 1990 upon my return stateside from military service. I had 2 failures that were not my fault. A compliance fitting split open and launched my carburetor. I got home that day thanks to a wad of chewing gum. The next day I replaced the fittings with a solid intake manifold and that problem was solved. The second failure was 3 years later when the electronic ignition module died mid ride. I had to push my bike nearly 5 miles home in the rain. The next day I replaced that electronic ignition with points ignition and had 11 trouble free years. I still run points on both of my Evos. Even as the Evo powered generations progressed, I knew that the "last days" of Harley Dadvidson were on the short horizon. When the twin cam came out, I knew that the end had come.
The HD evolution won't affect me moving forward. Not a chance I will ever pay 30k for a bike that I'm going to have to dump another 15-20k into to make it perform. I'll stick with my good ol twin cam 96.
Harley Davidson is going to evolve themselves right out of business, mark my words. VVT engines rely on oil system sensors to operate, sensors in oil are always a problem. I have been a mechanic on both cars and bikes for too many years to recall, and variable valve timing engines in cars have caused more grief than not. I don't even want to think about VVT on an air cooled V twin, sounds like a total nightmare. But that's just my opinion.
The EPA wants to put ALL gasoline powered Cars AND motorcycles out of business,,!! That is the progressive and Liberal agenda,, DEMONcrats run the EPA and other parts of our government, right now,,!! Don't vote for them,, Maybe we can kill some of their WOKE ideas,,!! Otherwise we will all be riding electric motorcycles and cars,,!!
I don't think anything they do to reduce emissions is going to satisfy these global warming nazis. They won't be happy till they eliminate all motor vehicles from the general public. They'll still have them though. If it was so true about emissions, why aren't they talking about hydrogen? Electric vehicles & self driving cars will never work for the general public. At leased not in the forseeable future.
I would not buy the VVT engine until the bugs are worked out... I have zero interest in being HD's test dummy, especially at the prices these bikes are going for.
I've owned several Harley's including a stock '57 Panhead, stock '39 Knucklehead. Still riding after 49 years. Ride a stock '99 Heritage Springer evolution motor is the best, bulletproof.
My dad bought a 1981 cb900c new and gave it to me in 2000. It is air/oil cooled and has 83,000 miles now and has been in the shop once to check the valves. One needed adjustment. Other than that, it has been just routine maintenance.
@@mattcottrell3336had my doubts for a while to buy a m8. Then test road it. No soul in it and sound like a sewing machine. Turned it back after the rest ride and road of om my dyna 🎉
I'm curious about it, just as much as with the twin cooling. The twin cooling is great but the down fall was something as simple as the housing on the electric water pump cracking and failing. Now we're messing with oil, pressure and electric solenoids. The 45 twin depends on that oil for everything!
@pierrebornerot4689 agreed. I had a heritage classic for about a year with the 107. No vibration, no growl. It could gitty up but didn't feel like a Harley to me. The dreaded oil pump drama mixed with Harley ESP made me come to the realization that the 103 was the last great motor of the pushrod era. I bought a road king with the 103 and decided I liked it so much, that I went to a low mileage Rushmore bike with a 103. Has been reliable so far and a smooth ride. I really hope Harley doesn't rid themselves of the original motor design, there's nothing else like it. The sound and feel, the ability to customize and the family that comes with just owning one. I'm 35 years old, but the feeling I get on these is unmatched. I liked my Hondas, but I loved my Harleys...
@@warlock9445 True, but there's no sign of parts getting scarce. In the last couple of years I have bought a NOS OEM speedometer and a complete NOS exhaust system for my two-year-only 1982 FXRS shovelhead. Harley and air-cooled BMW's have an endless supply of parts.
Got my 01 road king a year ago with 9k miles. Shop advised me to swap out the FI for a carb so i did. The bike came to life with that Mikuni carb. I just got my feuling cam chest kit with the 525 cams in the mail today. Cant wait to have those installed. I love my road king and cant wait to upgrade it some more. Brother, i really enjoy watching your videos. The amount of information you provide is crazy. I actually got my cam chest kit because of you. Thanks for putting in the effort and thanks for helping me get my bike healthy.
You got a good shop that actually recommended a carb swap! That cam is gonna transform your bike and easy to tune with the carb! Thank you for your support on the channel, that's what keeps me going!
My thoughts, I'll never be able to afford a 50 thousand dollar harley anyway so I'll just keep my little 95" twin turd with 525 cams and b happy...when that goes I'll bore the cylinders to 98" and still save money...and for a 20 year old bike it still looks damn good
The last “Easy” motor for the DYI Mechanic to work on was the Shovel. It was built like a Tractor with loose tolerances. Starting with the EVO, tolerances started to get tighter. Now everything is computer controlled. 🏍💨🏍💨
The shovel could be built on a dirt floor in a barn and it didn't care, the Evo could take a piece of wood under it on the dirt floor. But no doubt shovel was the last I don't care motor before tight tolerance took over. 60w oil in the shovel and good to go!
It’s all relative. I think the TC is a simple engine with loose tolerances in comparison to almost every other motorcycle engine out there. You can pull the engine and split the cases within an hour, at least a carb’d TC.
The twin cam wouldn't be bad if HD didn't cheap out on the parts. It should have had a proper crankshaft, crank bearings, and cam bearings. Theres no reason for the inner cam chain at all, that should be gears. I can live with the outer cam chain but it should have had a long chain guide/tensioner NOT a little bitty tensioner pad. I'm not interested in owning anything HD made after 2017. With each new release I like them less and less. If I get a brand new bike it won't be HD.
As time goes by the twin cam will be seen in a better light. Just upgraded my cam chest in my 12 streetglide. 570-2 cyclorama cams. 98.7 h.p. and 116 ftlbs tourque. It's a hotrod now.
The HD reliability is not good these days... I am on my 3rd M8 HD in 4 years. First one was a leaker and consumed excessive oil. My 2nd developed bad lifters, which ate the cam. And at 8500 miles it sumped destroying the engine. I now own a 2023 Street Glide with the smaller 107. I installed DK Customs external head breathers and a Trask transmission vented cover. My goal is to eliminate blowby. So far, so good. My next install is the oil cooler fan and the Fueling short sump plug. Some of the factory installed plugs are driven too far into the case, which contributes to the sumping issue. If this engine fails, it will be my last HD. I purchased a 5 year extended private company warranty so I can sleep better. HD needs to work on the overheating issue that kills these engines. My two cents :-)
I was a young boy when I bought my first Panhead (used) long before most on here were born. The saying was Harleys are a great bike once you rip all the Harley junk off of it. Over my lifetime I've found a lot of wisdom in that statement. And what you say is true. What would it cost to do a gear driven cam setup, decent bearings and some of the other OEM junk that most of us have ripped out and replaced with quality parts? Harley claims to assemble a "premium" motorcycle. Typical lies coming out of the Marketing department. There is nothing premium about a stock Harley Davidson. Maybe a decent crank would add significant cost but better bearings? Better tensioners?
Screw the epa, screw the government. They need to leave "WE THE PEOPLE" alone. It's time for government to do their job and let America and Americans do our jobs.
I'm for simplicity, fuck the regulations, they're killing joy while fattening greasy pockets, give me some noise and less nightmares... if I wanna fly I'll buy a riceburner...I wanna cruise n feel it !!! Evo, 🇦🇺

AGREED! A well dialed carb is just as good as FI in a lot of cases, new tech is great while it works but eventually plastic fails. All these new electronic components are plastic cases!
It took me 30yrs to warm up enough to the Evo to buy a '97 WideGlide so my '72 ElectraGlide could take a well earned break. I know my opinion doesn't count for much, but to me, the last Harley rolled off the assembly line with an Evo engine in it.
I 100% agree. Own 2 EVO's & a Twin Cam. I prefer the simplicity of the Evo, the sound, the vibration, the heritage to the Knuckle, Pan, Shovel. It's the sound EVERY American loves. Whether or not they'll admit it.
@@kevinoconnor2921 I own a Shovel and an Evo, because to me, they both retain the original spirit of Harley Davidson. A few years ago, I bought an 02 Heritage Softtail Springer with a Twinkie in it, but I got rid of it after 2mos because it had no soul. Even my wife refused to ride on it with me. If it had an Evo in it, Id'a kept it.
Great video Gixxer, I'm actually surprised the semi air cooled motor is still going, especially with the strict EPA regulations, as an old school wrencher the days of working on your own shit is almost out the door . I have 2 twin cams and 2 shovelheads , I can keep them bikes running with my eyes closed. Very curious about the vvt in the new bikes and how it's gonna effect performance upgrades. As always keep the vids coming 👍
I really appreciate what you do and still doing your own work! I truly believe that even with this new tech coming in guys like you and I will continue to do our own work. The feelings when the twin cam came out was doing your own work was over and here we are today tearing that twin cam down like it's nothing!
Until HD eliminated the "Trap Door" for the transmission, so they could charge a minimum of $2500.00 to split your cases to fix a transmission problem. What a scam. Indian followed suit by installing their oil pump inside the engine case.
A good rule of thumb is if your shiny new Harley starts sounding like two skeletons f#@king on a tin roof, it needs to go to the shop. With an old shovel, it's supposed to sound that way.
Anything Harley comes out with will have problems and Harley will leave it up to the customer to fix it. cam bearing on the 1999, cam chain tensioners on twin cams, compensator on 2005, Oil pumps on M8
Harley will complicate themselves out of business. Go ask your local dealer how many new sportsters theve sold. I've been to 4 dealerships in northwest Indiana. Not 1 of the 4 dealerships has sold a new sportster since they were released.
Still super happy with my 91 FXR I inherited. 16358 miles on it. When I do the lifters I will bump up the compression a little and add a Woods cam. Zero interest in going 140 miles an hour, the bike cruises like no one’s business already. It’s crazy to see a bike cost more than a full-size truck!
Agreed, that it will be their last air-cooled engine. Engines are getting too big to cool by just air and oil. Glad i got a twin cam. May it run forever
It's the electronics that will be impossible to find for the twin cams if anything. Harley is already discontinuing brain boxes for them and as of now, no aftermarket company is picking up the issue and offering replacements
I have ,flatheads ,(45,74,80 inch ) knuckleheads 61,74 inch panhead 74 inch ( my beloved 64 ) and a 1999 heritage evo I don't give a dead rats ass what the hell Harley does .yes I am a old man .and I like this channel
Both of my Patriots, have the 2.4 Dual VVT system. The engine is basically a motorcycle engine, with DOHC and four valves per cylinder. On the road, it sips gas in cruise control. But when you step on it, it's just like when a bike engine gets up on the cam: the beer muscles kick in, and the tach needle bounces off the redline. I expect that the Rev Max engine does the same thing.
One year doesn’t matter so much, but the first model year of production for the MM fuel injection was 1995, with the introduction of the 30th anniversary Electra Glide.
I thoroughly enjoy your content sir. If I could suggest a topic....a video on the models no longer made and the possible problems involved finding parts. I own a FXSTD "Deuce". This model had problems with parts availability when they were still making them! 😅
My son has an 07 Deuce. Parts are definitely scarce. Even harder to find than parts for my VROD. It doesn't help that the MoCo has made it much much more difficult to find parts for anything since they are shutting down many online vendors. But through Ebay and Vintage parts. He's been able to find most everything he wanted. The prices won't make you very happy. Good luck with your search.
@Mr White I have a complete build. 2000 carb model with Legend Air ride, Dakota Digital MLX-2000 guage, led everything, Andrew's TW26 cams intake and exhaut/ head work. 85hp 95ft lb to the pavement. I have some honey holes for rare parts. I thought it would be an interesting video for sure. 👍
Requesting help from this crowd.. kinda long story but.. I had some seizures last year. Consequently, my HD has sat for the duration of my driving restriction (one year). It’s a ‘14 Dyna TC 103 w/ stage 1 (no oil tank like a soft tail). I understand, “sumping is not new.” How can I remove any oil settled that would be sumped, if any? Will a simple oil change be a resolution? I believe I saw there’s a crank sensor during a “Twin Cam Tear Down” video. Can oil be drained from there to avoid sumping? Another vid guy said run my crank case breather tubes into a bottle when I fire it up again and let the engine blow it out. My worry is the screens of the breathers in the rocker box. Should I refrain from starting it and open the cam chest to pour out any that may be settled? I just want to avoid any problems. Thanks, y’all
I had a TC96 and after about a week of not using it the oil would drain into the crank. Starting it would refill the tank which you don't have but im assuming it would just recirculate like normal. Maybe just let it run a minute make sure you don't hear anything weird?
Still riding 2 twin cam motors. Lucky my dealer (Bald Eagle Harley-Marquette, Mi.) Still services them, problem is alot of dealers phasing out even touching them. Part of evolving people to the new motors. Had a 1st gen M8 and really liked it too.
The more I learn about all those new techs and eletronics embarked in every HD models and, of course, the new prices the Motor Co. is charging nowadays, the more I love my faithfull 2002, carburated Softail Deuce. All the best from Brazil.✌
It's getting rough for the air cooled twin, Indian is already signaling on the big twin with the Challenger where they are going. Harley took a different approach on the Sportster going all water cooled. Sadly it's never going to be the same, but it could be close if they do it right.
The golfers that run the company think they are building the latest Gold Wing or BMW. Simplicity and reliability are the true HD hallmark. Us dedicated EVO pilots laugh while today's company flounders into oblivion.
Thanks for the vid... (IMO) VVT, is just the next step in complexity and ever increasing price point. Jochen Zeitz is German born Climate change Cultist. (took only 10 seconds to google him) 40+ years in Corporate America taught me many things. One is want to know where a company is going. I need look no further than who ('m) is at the top. It's not just HDMC. EU emission standards seem to be the general direction all industries are heading.
Why do VVT when your exhaust and intake cams aren't separate? They should have stayed with twin cam and did a gear drive with a thicker cover and then add VVT.oops I forgot too much run out with shity crank bearings. We're doomed.
VVT makes sense. More efficient and more horsepower. With fuel, spark advance and cam timing all computer controlled that's how we get little engines that perform so well. Now, if we could just add a turbo and effective valve cooling . . .
As with previous new harley engine versions I will wait 2 to 3 years for them to sort the problems out. By then they will be introduced into the " relatively " more affordable models. But wait I will be 73 by then so maybe just stay with my Lowrider ST.
I think from 2 experiences attempting to replace a few cam actuators, VVT works great until something breaks. When it does, it will happen eventually, the tow truck will come, and the repairs can become very expensive. The VVT damage from wear 130k miles on my buddies Ford150 forced him to lock out the VVT to save the engine from a chain reaction of wear related damage that happened. After market auto parts makers are producing a variety of VVT lock out kits that vastly prolong vehicle engine life on V6 and V8 engines.
I’m interested to see the specs on the vvt engine, especially for installing performance cams, just for piston/valve clearance. I’m assuming it won’t be able to retard the cam timing all that much for power but I guess any swing is good…but the performance cams??? Easy enough to figure out but I’m intrigued…I’m hoping they have some to try out next month in Laconia.
I agree i think they will some issues at the beginning but will be sorted out i never owned or ridden a m8 yet but like ya said anything harley can do to the v twin alive for as long as possible has my vote i will keep my 103 electra glide for as long as possible love that bike great vids as usual gix have a great week
Harley needs a lot more than just VVT, like water cooling, relocating or dumping the oil tank and routing the exhaust pipes away from all rider parts. As a rider I get way to much heat from the engine. I would also like to see the fuel tank moved down low to reduce the top heaviness.
I have never seen a group of people complain so must as Harley riders, they want Harley t stay exactly the same as it was 40 years ago. The funny part is most of the people who complain don't support Harley anyway, sure they ride a Harley from a couple decades gone by; however, they have not purchased nor do they have any intention of purchasing a new Harley yet they are the ones complaining the most. Ive owned several Harley's over the years and own 3 right now, 2009 Rocker C, 2021 Street Glide and my wife rides a 2009 Tri Glide, we love our Harley's but also ok with evolving, personally i cant wait for Harley to bring out a larger version of the RevMax engine designed for a Street Glide & i know my wife would love the RevMax in a new Tri Glide. I have no interest in working on my bikes, if i need something, the dealership is the qualified ones to complete. Recently just added stage 2 to my Street Glide, dealership is the one i trust, certainly not some backyard mechanic and i have no interest or desire to do it myself. So bring on progression
EFI Evos came out in 1995 with the 30th anniversary Electraglide. I own one #1697 I should know. Now if they do a direct injection 60th anniversary Electraglide I’d buy it.
i enjoy my fxr's. 82' shovel fxr w a solid lift cam, 83' shovel fxr stock and an 87' tc fxrpi, and a 91' 110 ci tc swap w a timken lower end. simple machines.
Can you do a "This cam is for you" video for TC? You've done a lot of cam videos, But never really drilled down into "rev ranges". I tend to redline 1st/2nd but then mid shift. But I am 100% ignorant on aftermarket cams.
evolve or die. HD as a company needs to progress, while still walking a balance of preserving the "essence" of a harley. The VVT might have a few bugs out of the gate (just like the M8 did), but overtime, as with anything else, mechanics will adapt
The more complicated anything gets, the more moving parts it has ,the more it's prone to failure, doesn't matter what it's task is ,bike boat car house , thanks for the information, but it will be a bid win for dealers n that's about it
I'm for simplicity, fuck the regulations, they're killing joy while fattening greasy pockets, give me some noise and less nightmares... if I wanna fly I'll buy a riceburner...I wanna cruise n feel it !!! Evo, Twinkie
When you said "it looked impossibly complicated" I just about spit my drink out laughing. Oh yeah twin cam, cutting edge. Maybe we can sell it to NASA!
Everyone was afraid of VVT when it became standard on new cars. The aftermarket caught up in no time. Now with a few simple mods those same cars are making 1000 plus horsepower. VVT on Harleys will be no problem.
Shouldn't be too bad. LS Gen 4 motors have VVTI. Eventually it will probably lead to a system that can change the timing in the engine while it's running through the powerband like an iVtec motor so they can run higher compression on lower octane gas.
Just the natural evolution of the big twin, in my 48 years on harleys (shovel, evo, twin cam) I’ve had to do less maintenance as the basic v twin has been refined at each step along the way, more time for riding. It’s called progress and time marches on. D W
Finally, someone with a brain and not pretending it was better way back when. I can ride all day at 80mph on my Softail Street Bob with a 107. Up graded to a touring seat. No way you are touring all over Florida, like I did in February, on a Shovel Head cruising at 80+ mph. The engine probably wouldn't last day in and day out riding. Neither would my back on an old bike. No issues with my 2020 M8 or my wife's 2016 Twin Cam. Change the fluids and monitor everything else, no issues
As far as aftermarket cams and cam phasers go, the automotive aftermarket often uses phase limiters or locks. Sometimes full sweep of a cam phaser on a high lift cam causes valve to piston contact, so they cut down the variability to prevent the issue. I’m sure the aftermarket for Harley will do something similar. I’m just hoping the phaser is designed well and doesn’t have a tendency to sludge up and cause problems!
After owning 2 brand new M8 roadglides 17,18 both spending more time in shop than my garage with mechanical issues ,I think it'll work & do what they expect however first few years on market there will be an opened huge can worms & nonstop issues that only up to date Harley techs can resolve, would not go there for the world....imo.....there's nothing worse than spending near 50k on new bike & accessories only to ride dealer loan bikes 80% of the time if your lucky....Much rather spend 20k less on low km 2nd hand twincam than deal with stators, oil locks, endless oil pumps backing plates recalls recalls recalls ,All twincams I had were faultless never an issue ever .Its same with all new models of anything cars bikes trucks etc etc first few years have issues with few even lemons & last models normally floorless unless it's China junk.....
with the issues Harley has had with engines in the pass, evo case cracking and lifters, twin cam chain tensioners and crank, 8m sumping and crank. hasn't really stood behind those problems. You really think Harley is going to pull this off? I'll stick with my 103 hp with alot of aftermarket parts. Not buying anything from Harley Davidson over priced and low quality
Geeze, I wish Harley Davidson would come out with a Brand New Evo "Throw-Back". I just don't understand the need for these HUGE Displacement Motors on a Harley.
Another good video Gixer! VVT does make an engine more efficient. It always adds cost. And it always adds complexity. It will typically add HP as well. Although I would bet it won't add more than 3 or 4 HP on a pushrod V-Twin. The VVT system HD is introducing. Won't help them sell motorcycles. Especially when at the moment, you have to spend close to $50,000 to get it.
I really believe that's going to be possible, M8 is a damn good motor. It's starting to be recognized as that finally, it's going the same way every one scoffed at and then love the Evo and Twin Cam.
VVT is a good idea in theory. The problem is Harley tends to rush things to production and as we know, never buy anything new from Harley for at least 3 years until they work the kinks out! Another thing is the price of a new Herley is close and in some instances more than a Lexus or a Mercedes! You cannot sustain a product at those prices! Customers will be forced to walk away.
Just put a version of the Rev Max in all bikes already. I get the love of air-cooled motors , I enjoy my M8 Road King but you can't run from this much longer.
58 Love the # The year I was born. check out the gas tank emblem for 1958 Dual Glide as classic as they come. I am using that paint theme to finish off my Road King as inspiration.
I am glad that my 01 Road King Classic has the old style crank bearings and not the newer press fit. It has a MM fuel injection system and it has never given me any issues. At my age , I’m sure it will be my last Harley, but she’s a goodie!! And VVT , on a air cooled bike engine, Harley Davidson better wake up and smell the fresh air, because this is a HORRIBLE idea!!
Do you think the Variable Valve Timing system is going to work well or do you think it's going to cause some unforseen issues?
Oh no it is 100% going to cause some issues, tha k God it's only on the dentist's and lawyers bikes for now
I think it'll be fine until people mess with it, just like any other evo-after Harley...
It will be a nightmare, just as it has been on cars.
It's beats up cams in pretty much every engine It's in.
Gm already has it on its v8 pushrod engines -
No problems -

We all have em 8:24
They don't have a choice. Won't be long before the government doesn't allow air/oil cooled engines. This isn't a Harley thing, it is an EPA thing.
The EPA wants to put
ALL gasoline powered
Cars AND motorcycles
out of business,,!!
That is the progressive
and Liberal agenda,,
DEMONcrats run the
EPA and other parts
of our government,
right now,,!!
Don't vote for them,,
Maybe we can kill
some of their WOKE
ideas,,!! Otherwise
we will all be riding
electric motorcycles
and cars,,!!
I don't think anything they do to reduce emissions is going to satisfy these global warming nazis. They won't be happy till they eliminate all motor vehicles from the general public. They'll still have them though. If it was so true about emissions, why
aren't they talking about hydrogen? Electric vehicles & self driving cars will never work for the general public.
At leased not in the forseeable future.
I would not buy the VVT engine until the bugs are worked out... I have zero interest in being HD's test dummy, especially at the prices these bikes are going for.
Glad I got a 1200 Evo and 103ho. Good enough for the rest of my life.

Other than that, it has been just routine maintenance.
valve adjustment is routine maintenance.
I'll stick with my twin cam. The Milwaukee 8 with vvt sounds like voodoo.
Here here!
I feel the same. I had an M8 and traded back to a TC. Hopefully we will be able to continue to get parts so we can rebuild these
@@mattcottrell3336had my doubts for a while to buy a m8.
I'm 50 and I have two carburated shovelheads. They will last for the rest of my lifetime.
Amen, fuck paying 50 plus grand for the new Harleys
As long as the parts are still available
There's nothing like a simple motor, the way it's supposed to be, its a motor cycle, plain n simple.
Loved my shovel, still loving my flathead 55 kh
The shovel could be built on a dirt floor in a barn and it didn't care, the Evo could take a piece of wood under it on the dirt floor. But no doubt shovel was the last I don't care motor before tight tolerance took over. 60w oil in the shovel and good to go!
It’s all relative. I think the TC is a simple engine with loose tolerances in comparison to almost every other motorcycle engine out there. You can pull the engine and split the cases within an hour, at least a carb’d TC.
I can relate my 383 stroker back-in-the-day. Super simple

So in your world, its a good idea to close the Environmental watchdog so that you can do whatever you want along with people like you?

I own a Shovel and an Evo, because to me, they both retain the original spirit of Harley Davidson.
A few years ago, I bought an 02 Heritage Softtail Springer with a Twinkie in it, but I got rid of it after 2mos because it had no soul.
Even my wife refused to ride on it with me.
If it had an Evo in it, Id'a kept it.
I think it is time Harley-Davidson stop satisfying the government, and start satisfying the customer. The everyday Rider.
I think you are right. They have to do something to keep up with the EPA.
Regulations have forced a lot of innovations over the years
I really appreciate what you do and still doing your own work! I truly believe that even with this new tech coming in guys like you and I will continue to do our own work. The feelings when the twin cam came out was doing your own work was over and here we are today tearing that twin cam down like it's nothing!
I've got no fuel injectors, no catalytic converters,
and nothing in the budget for Harley mechanics.

That's true freedom, just ride, wrench and enjoy!
Evo sportster is the best engine ever
I had the first year. Chain drive 4 spd. $3995.00. I eventually punched it to a 74 but sold it in 96 after 21,000 fun miles. Wish I still had it.
All feelings aside and stick to the facts you're a fool to argue that point!
People shit on sporties but I love them. Probably gonna buy a used beater as my backup bike in the next year or two.
Well Gixer complicated is just expensive pays to wait and see how it goes for the first couple of years.
Great video brother all the best from NZ 🇳🇿
Anything Harley comes out with will have problems and Harley will leave it up to the customer to fix it.
cam bearing on the 1999, cam chain tensioners on twin cams, compensator on 2005, Oil pumps on M8
Harley will complicate themselves out of business. Go ask your local dealer how many new sportsters theve sold. I've been to 4 dealerships in northwest Indiana. Not 1 of the 4 dealerships has sold a new sportster since they were released.
$15,000.00 for a Sportster? Rode a 1200XLC for 10years and only paid $3000.00 for it used.
@bryanhadley8704 you are correct. I'm sure the aftermarket will try to catch up. Hopefully they can
My question is are they going to need to fix the crank run out issues if they are going to using vvt. Doent everything have to be precise fit?

How about the Harley V4. Legendary and balanced.
It's a true shame they never brought that to market, you'd think one of those prototypes would of escaped the factory.
@@ianbutler3558 appreciate it
Still riding 2 twin cam motors. Lucky my dealer (Bald Eagle Harley-Marquette, Mi.) Still services them, problem is alot of dealers phasing out even touching them. Part of evolving people to the new motors. Had a 1st gen M8 and really liked it too.

The golfers that run the company think they are building the latest Gold Wing or BMW. Simplicity and reliability are the true HD hallmark. Us dedicated EVO pilots laugh while today's company flounders into oblivion.
Milwaukee 8 114 is awesome in the Colorado Rockies. I normally ride at 8,000 to 12,000 ft. The M8 doesn't even notice.
I'll take that technology.
I've got the 114 engine in my 2021 Street Bob/ what's the outlook for overall reliability, in keeping the stock engine, with only Slip Ons exhaust...
Now, if we could just add a turbo and effective valve cooling . . .
can we put a magneto along with the carb on a Twinkie?
As with previous new harley engine versions I will wait 2 to 3 years for them to sort the problems out. By then they will be introduced into the " relatively " more affordable models. But wait I will be 73 by then so maybe just stay with my Lowrider ST.
I'll keep my 99 twin cam with my Holley screaming eagle double pumper thank you very much !
As long as I can buy or make parts for my Twin Cams ...
Easy enough to figure out but I’m intrigued…I’m hoping they have some to try out next month in Laconia.
the air intake on the 121... going back to the hamcan
It sure looks like it! It's they are trying to pressurize and air box behind the filter with the design I am seeing there.
I can't afford a new one, so at this point idc.
I’ll stay with the old stuff. Harley isn’t know for its reliability now, this won’t help it.

It's a cool idea, but I'll keep my twin cam, cheap parts and reliable operation that I can work on,
Harley is overpricing themselves out of the market
Consider doing a video on Fueling Sump Plug and if it helps the sumping issue. Seems to be cheap, common sense helper/fix.
I just bought a new S&S 475 cam kit for my next year HD. Hope it works if the entire line-up goes with VVT. Depends how the VVT will activate I guess.
Evo's an older for me. I don't knock technology but I'll sit back and let young riders pay HD for their mistakes.
Started out on a knuck. Love my M8.
The more complicated anything gets, the more moving parts it has ,the more it's prone to failure, doesn't matter what it's task is ,bike boat car house , thanks for the information, but it will be a bid win for dealers n that's about it
Look at LS based engines after 2007, variable valve timing on a pushrod V8. The reliability all depends on what type of system they end up using.
I think my 88 EFI twin cam is one of the last ... very simple to work on
I’ll stick with my 1996 Evo. Love this bike. My boy will get it when I can no longer ride.
Everyone was afraid of VVT when it became standard on new cars. The aftermarket caught up in no time. Now with a few simple mods those same cars are making 1000 plus horsepower. VVT on Harleys will be no problem.
It would be great if we could retro fit VVT to the older 114s. Maybe the aftermarket will have a kit.
I’m more afraid of HD being forced to go All EV and that hand will be forced by the government!!! 😳
I would wait at least 3 years before buying one. I am convinced HD does not thoroughly test new designs
I got am m8 and I'm looking to keep it along time 😮
I really believe that's going to be possible, M8 is a damn good motor. It's starting to be recognized as that finally, it's going the same way every one scoffed at and then love the Evo and Twin Cam.
Looks like the transmission right cover has changed aswell, hmmmm? Reverse?
Oh no.
Good catch, maybe a reverse? I am really interested to get some tech specs on this new engine and trans.
Once again thank you for all the knowledge brother
You have a great channel. Thanks
Thank you, and thank you for your support!
what's with thru #58 in the background?
That's a number plate off my personal flat track bike. I was fortunate enough to get a ride on some XR's but never could afford to buy a XR myself.
Good content..Carry on..
Thank you sir!
