I'm not a harley fan at all. But I can appreciate the sound of a traditional harley. And this sounds nothing like it. They are in a tough spot. They've held on to tradition so long that they really aren't going to have success trying to change. Plenty of import bikes that will out perform this for less money.
The thing is, the fanbase who do want the classic Harleys are getting smaller and smaller as they grow older. Younger generation does not have the same emotional attachment to the classic Harley styling and sound. If Harley wants to survive they also need to evolve and get on with the times, modernise their lineup while keep a few retro style bikes for people who do want them. Triumph got it right and are now doing really well.
I’ve owned 2 Sportsters. A 2007 1200c and an 1999 883c and I loved both of them. Even riding solo or with a passenger on the highways or carving mountain road-trips they always kept up with the big bikes my friends were riding. I recently sold my 883 because I found a 2011 Dyna Wide Glide (my dream bike since I was a little kid). Im 6’1 and wanted a bigger bike, I ever once did I regret riding my Sportys. They will always have a special spot in my heart.
My 2000 883 was the worst motorcycle I ever owned. I bought it new and my experience with it made me decide I would never buy another motorcycle from HD ever in my entire life.
I had a 07 1200 w Vance and Hines shorty exhaust and it sounded awesome. Pearl yellow w every possible chrome on it. My bucket list bike is a 06 Screaming Eagle Vrod in Pearl Yellow
My old man brought home a 2007 dyna wide glide on 7-7-07 and we had it for about 6 years. I always said I'd never buy a Harley less it was that same year and model, or an appropriate vrod. This thing has me totally reconsidering that.
The founding fathers are rolling over in their graves. Harley-Davidson has bowed to the japanese bike makers. Good thing we have 45 years of good sportsters so we don't have to buy this new crap.
@@ObiPleasantyou mean the “crap” that’s FINALLY an evolution of shit from the 50s? Seriously Harley is shit because they never bothered to evolve. People like you need to face reality and see this is the only way Harley survives. Sales are down for a reason.
@@Gundam4President I respect your opinion. I'm a relic. And yet... I don't give a shit. I've got 100 years of old crap to choose from. From 1936-2003 I have every size of every model ever made. Low compression, slow, dependable to fast reliable with a billion parts that are interchangeable, reproduced by every after market company under the sun. That isn't even taking into consideration cheap ass china made parts. Love ya, Bro. You do what you gotta do and I'll do the same. And keep your rubber parts where they're supposed to be.
I can honestly say the controls are gonna vary for each person. I recently started working at Harley, I’m obsessed with the sportster s and the forwards feel very natural and comfy for me
I'm more into sports bikes I have a Hayabusa but my body is beat up now i want something more comfortable with a tune can you get more horsepower out of this thing with a power commander or ECU Flash
Honestly if they want to get a new crowd they should make it customizable to a small degree at purchase. A new rider wants mids? Swap controls at no charge
@@joedazier6960 What are you talking about? Tons of sport cruisers and naked sport bikes have mid controls. You must not know anything outside of Japanese bikes.
Old timer here….and H-D owner (super glide) . I’m very happy the company they’ve re-invented the Sportster. It outlived its design by several years. It’s not a all uses bike. It’s an urban attack bike and as such acquits itself nicely. I’m thinking you will revisit the mid-position pegs. It’s a smallish ride and the cramped position will get old. The term “Sportster” in the ‘50s I think didn’t mean sports bike in our understanding of the term. Oh, and I understand exactly why it has to be…..but that exhaust note is the saddest sounds to emanate from a Harley……..sigh….
Agree 100% about the sound, almost like a small 2 stroke engine? I am sure H D could have engineered the exhaust to sound better. Even the Indian Scout 69 cubic inch engine sounds better than this.
@@paulwojnar2291 Fair comment. It wasn't so much the exhaust note as the sound of the engine. There were a few other niggles but as I think I said it just didn't suit me. To be honest I am on my third GS and it sounds & handles exactly how I want a bike to.
1. The sportster s does have QC issues with the electrical connections; mine has been in the shop twice within a months time. And 2 the costs is closer to 18-20k. With those two items the motor is strong and I have had an enjoyable time. But I wouldn't recommend for brand new riders unless they keep it in rain or road mode.
@@mattsloop2736 pretty normal, had to pay high interest because I'm in Washington. Plus title and fees plus Harleys dumb freight surcharge on every bike. Also just looked at the paperwork it was 15,400 because I got the midnight crimson.
I just recently stumbled upon your page and have been hooked since the first video. thank you, I am a father of two and pray every day to get home to them. But I am human and I love excitement. Your videos provide me with the knowledge and confidence I need. when you said to keep all the settings and riding around in rain mode for a little while to get comfortable with the bike. I appreciate and stand behind that as a father I enjoy showing my son your videos and going over the safety points and excitement that riding gives us . Don’t stop!!! Keep the videos, laughs and information coming🎉
Not that anyone will see this because the video is a years old, but what Harley could possibly do to engage a new audience, is to simply state, “Not every Harley is for everybody, but we make a Harley, for anybody”. This idea would absolutely work. It’s a modern take on the old Honda ad. Of people remember, back in the day, the imports made a splash with their, ‘You meet the nicest people on a Honda’ sort of marketing campaign.
This is unfathomable to your average Harley rider That toxic mentality is what has held the brand back for so long. Harley could have done what Indian did.
I own 2010 Forty-Eight. It’s the only year they made it with the orange-peanut gas tank. I get compliments for it from every Harley owner that sees it up close. It’s stage 3 and is an absolute monster.
That 2010 model 48 I had was the best bike I ever owned to date. 13,000 miles in 7 months. I made a stupid decision to get a night train. I still kick my ass for getting rid of that 1200.
Just recently picked up a 2022 48. Getting taller bars, new exhaust, and a better seat to ride the wheels off of it. And in a few years when my daughter is confident riding I will get something else and she can ride it through ANOTHER SET OF WHEELS!
I work for YVO and we kept the last Sportster however it's an 883 iron. Most of the company signed the bike so it's covered in marker. The 1200 is still out there idk if I would know where but all of our sporsters were sold.
Seeing the new “sporster” makes me appreciate my ‘15 Forty Eight a lot more. I can’t stand how this bike sounds. All we needed was the tech from this, a bump in power and classic sounds and looks.
The sound is down to the exhaust being constructed to pass European exhaust standards. You put an exhaust on it, you’re only really going to tell the difference at idle. More importantly, you should consider that Harley was never going to give you the power bump. Even with a 131 crate motor, they were only ever going to make a bigger engine, because why would they bother? They know their customers will pay a premium for just displacement, then go out and spend thousands more on cams, intakes, exhausts, and tunes. Like, you guys did this to yourselves, then when they build an actually good engine that competes with other brands, y’all are still complaining.
@@altortugas5979 if you’ve ever heard a sporster S with an exhaust, you’ll know it sounds terrible. They could have made something similar to an Indian scout. Sounds fantastic and makes great power. I think the sportster S is a good standalone bike, just not a replacement.
@@kevinhendley8524 I've heard both the Sportster S and Nightster S in person and they sound 10x better in person than on video. Do they sound like a traditional Harley? No. But IMO they sound great different but great. They sound modern and that is because they are. The aftermarket will develop exhausts to satisfy people like you (No offense intended).
Yeah, I’ve heard terrible clips and decent clips, but facts, they sound way different in person. And, if I’m not mistaken, the 90 degree firing order is basically a better sounding version of a 270 degree crank on a p-twin. I ride a Rebel 1100 with a TBR slip-on, hang out with a bunch of Harley-owning club-riders, and they all think it sounds great. I don’t for a second believe a Sportster S will sound worse IRL than my Rebel.
I rode a '66 Sportster, S&S 4 5/8" stroke, 3 1/4" Dytch barrels for 77". S&S GAL carb, Sifton minus-minus cams. Magneto. The only gauge was a Smiths Tachometer. It weighed 440lbs and was very very fast. These new PanAm motors have a 3'" stroke like a Ducati and a huge bore. Perfect for a race bike and a 3-4K bandwidth. My old stroker was a tractor with a huge power envelope. The Pan Am motors require a downshift to pass someone at freeway speeds. Mine was 100% trouble free. This S has dozens of ways to fail or break. And I think it is made in India. The old sprotster had top quality high strength fasteners made in the US, the chain was a Diamond #1 available at any hardware store in the US.
to be honest, a year ago you were very enthusiastic and you produced a good video. The bikes aren't selling and I'm looking at buying an older used sportster
Great review, Sean. It's good to see Harley Davidson updating the engine on the Sportster. Old school people like me, 67 years old, who owns, races, and works on my own bikes, are still stuck in the stone ages, lol. God Bless.
The Sportster S isn’t even the bike replacing the old Sportsters. I don’t k ow why Harley says that. Really the Nightster will be the closest thing to the old sportsters. It’s got a 975 cc engine instead of a 1250. But it’ll definitely be more powerful than the old sportsters
Nothing wrong with the Stone Age. My 1997 xl has more ponies and torque than the rev max sportster s and it weighs about the same. Sure it’s somewhat modified but it’s still a daily rider that gets 47mpg on 91 octane pump gas and runs mid elevens in the quarter and low sevens in the eighth. I also like some of today’s technology but absolutely do not want any of the electronic nannie stuff. So I recently bought a 2022 Yamaha mt07. The thing is an absolute hoot to ride.
@@scrumthebum2451 Yes, tons of money, and we love it. This has been a bad year for SCTA Land Speed Racing, Bonneville, and El Mirage. So many cancellations due to rain. I just found out they canceled our last race of the year for this coming weekend. Raining today and tomorrow.
The day I turned 16, In 73, had my 71 RD 350 paid for and waiting for me. Drum brakes front and rear, no abs, or anything fancy .Rode in the rain, snow, drunk, tripping on acid, high on some good weed. Wheelie all day, slice turns at speed. Never went down, or had a problem . I guess the new tidepod kids, need all the fancy ,electronic " safety features." Great vid, as always.
Now that right there is funny! I modded a '72 RD 350 back in the day, and was taking down just about everything in it's class at Pocono raceway. It was a rocket, and light and nimble, and you could throw it into a turn until you dragged the footpegs, and it never acted like it wanted to jump out from under you! One of the best 2 stroke street bikes Yamaha ever produced.😉
@@danw1955 One of my all-time favorite bikes was my '72 350 yamaha. I did some really stupid stuff on that bike but God was protecting me. What a fun bike!
I turned 16 in 1974 and my brother gave me a 1972 1000 cc Sportster to ride which I later bought for $243.00 and a bag of weed. It started a Love/Hate relationship with the sportster that has shaped my life and continues to this day. Outside sits a 1995 883 Hugger with a 1250 S & S Hooligan kit. My next project.
I love the fact these are almost an evolution of the Vrod. I want a Vrod pretty bad but I would almost consider one of these over one because of the fact it has a 6 speed trans and cruise control. The forward controls on these wouldn’t be so bad if the bars were back farther in my opinion.
He really wants the last 1200 off the line he tries the hole time to find good things about the bike. The funny thing is there is always a but when he says something good about. In a time when everyone has to be politically correct about everything it kills what being an individual was all about.
Imo Harley's biggest hurdle is their MSPR, for people that aren't brand loyal it's hard to justify spending the extra money on a Harley just for the name, I just bought a Suzuki Boulevard because it could get a bike similar to an ultra classic for a fraction of the cost.
@@fvgc454ss or I just continue to buy Japanese bikes that do the exact same job, I don't need to spend the extra money just to say I have a Harley/BMW/Ducatti, I like to ride, not brag about what I ride.
Does it feel as rowdy as the vrsc? I ride a night rod. Considering moving on to a sportster s in the future but I'm afraid they may feel "tamer" than my V.
@@87Lowbird Results may vary, but for me, it’s much more rowdy than my Muscle was. I can throw it around much easier than then the VRod, and the acceleration is incredible. My best advice is to ride one, put it in sport mode and gather your own opinion on it.
Regarding ride modes, one of the things I remember from my Multistrada, is it's fun to leave it in "rain" mode for a while and just forget about it, then in a couple weeks, switch back to "sport" mode. Bam! Brand new feeling of a race bike!
I think your 0-60 was a lot quicker when you were merging with traffic. A lot of the things you like are the things I don't care for. I prefer an analog gauge, I don't need riding modes, and I don't care for the fat front tire. I do love that engine. I also prefer mid controls. I think if I had to choose between this and the Pan America that this would come in second place mainly because of the comfort over a longer ride. Might be a different choice if they came out with the Bronx with this engine instead of the 975.
@@freebehindbars8654 I haven't ridden one. I have sat on one with the forward controls and I didn't like the seating position. The seat definitely would not be comfortable for more than a few hours at most. The Nightster is more comfortable position and the Pan America is even more comfortable. I have six bikes and these new digital speedometers are just awful and the tachometers are just useless.
@@CraigSmith568 I think you just hate technology cuz there is nothing wrong with the digital speedometer or tachometer. The worlds advancing and better technology will keep coming out stay stuck in the past with all your analog gauges but don’t try and shit on the new stuff just out of spite.
@@XSkyKingXx It isn't out of spite. A digital tachometer is ok if you are at a steady speed, but trying to read one that is revving up is terrible. I can see an analog speedometer knowing where the needle is without having to look at it and process the actual number taking my eyes off of the road. Just because it has more technology in it doesn't mean it's better. Honda Goldwing still has an analog tach and speedometer and it has some of the most tech of any bike out there. Just like having bluetooth on a bike when I don't even listen to music when I ride. Because I don't like something doesn't mean I'm shitting on it. I'm just saying I don't want to pay for something that I don't use. I have my opinion and I'm not changing it because someone else doesn't like it.
@@XSkyKingXx Saying someone should like new tech regardless if its better or worse sounds a lot more like spite than someone saying they prefer something else. You go enjoy all the new tech for the sake of it and when you find it harder to read than the analogue ones you only have you to blame. Of course you will also be paying more for that tech - even though it costs less to fit. You sound like the kind of guy who would say "gobble gobble" then vote for a holiday near the end of December...
I have this same bike in black. I also did mid controls and it has TBR exhaust and TBR rear fender delete. I love it. On the track, it is a formidable bike. The ABS on this bike is probably the best there is on the market. It’s a lot of fun.
@@petebusch9069 Read it again but from the perspective that I might be agreeing with you. Perhaps assume some sarcasm to my comment and then see if you can make sense of it. 👍
I love my 21 sportster s as well. The heated hand grips are an extra you have to pay more for. I was bummed when it was advertised as standard and then upon receiving the bike I was informed it was not standard. I am 6'2" so I am a bit on the taller side. If I was about 5'6" it would be perfect size. I installed the heated grips, passenger pillion with back rest, and took off the swing-arm and added the 2 brothers license plate LED frame. I hope I can get a different exhaust and tune before too long. The maps is garbage so I just use my apple watch for directions and leave the screen on my music controls. The cruise control and riding modes works really well and I use them all the time. I can ride all year in AZ so well worth it to me.
Check out an FTR1200, it's capabilities are second to none. Wheelies, drifts, stoppies, cruising, city riding. Does it all. Just a more brutal bike, so keep that in mind. It's very rowdy.
Different experience for me. I love the bike, the best I have ever owned. I knew the heated grips were not on it before I ordered it and I ordered it two days after it was announced. So that is kind of on you (the button is there because the cover unit is the same as the Pan America that comes with them). Maps I find usable when within city limits. The seat and tail I just went with Corbin, no passenger. I also went with a bar riser (40mm up and 25mm back) and the HD smoke screen. The one thing in common here though that you don't get with a different street bike... Because it is a HD we could modify it to our personal preference within 6 months of its release because manufacturers know they will make money in selling those parts. Your bike is built to you, mine is built to me. A GSX 1000 is still shitty to ride for more than an hour 10 years after you buy it. This is my first HD and I would struggle to buy from a different manufacturer. If there is something off to you on this bike, just find the modification you need and order it.
@@MrEiniweini there’s not really a big aftermarket for this specific bike from what I can tell, outside of pegs or hand grips. I’d like to change the LED turn signals into something smaller and change out the exhaust. Outside of having it custom ordered, there’s maybe like 2 brothers and that’s it for an exhaust. I keep up with the forums and most everyone has just done custom work themselves.
@@THR33-LAWS-SAF3 The TBR exhaust was released two weeks after the bike. More a money making feat than an engineering spectacular. The exhaust heat is something I have seen every person that got it have to try to find a way around. V&H has an option of full exhaust or slip ons I think. Really expensive though. I ride home from work at midnight so a loud exhaust will only get me a rope across the road. I would like to get rid of the sewing machine exhaust sound though.
Don't let it get wet your computer will fry and the only way you can hear the bike is to have a full straight pipe system and a tune which you will lose some power but not nearly as much as a lot of people think still did plenty of wheelies after going straight pipe with a tune
Pretty cool bike! I test rode one and was impressed by the power and handling. I then immediately test rode a Triumph Rocket 3 R and couldnt believe the power of it and it handled about as well as the Harley. Ended up getting a Rocket 3 R, but the Sportster S is a great new direction for Harley.
Still doesn't make sense to me. If you want it to put the sport in Sportster, then ditch the goofy fat front tire, put on mid controls from the factory, and add another disc up front. Why bother with adjustable suspension bits if you have a front tire that's twice as wide as it should be and only a single front disc on a 500+ pound bike? Also if they really want to attract newer or younger riders, put out a 750cc equivalent with ~70hp as you'd have to be foolish to think of this as a first bike.
I’ve never liked sport bikes, I’ve grown up loving big loud Harley’s and choppers, although I’ve never cared if someone else liked sport bikes, however the more I get into motorcycles, the more I realize everyone is so insecure about other people not liking their bike, Sport bike guys especially seem to hate the most, calling everyone else fat, slow, old etc. seemingly without understanding of why others like that stuff in the first place. For me I don’t really care about speed, I care about the look, sound, and feel of the bike. And I’m totally cool with others liking something else, what I’m not cool with however. Is crapping on others who don’t like what you like. It’s a waste of time and pisses people off.
There are insecure people in every hobby, sport and activity and a lot of them are usually pretty loud about it online. In reality, I ride a metric cruiser and always wave at everyone riding a motorcycle and almost always get a wave back unless we're cornering or something that we need both hands for; sport bikes included.
I'm 71 and started riding in the mid 60's. Through the years I've had Triumphs, BSA's , Norton's a couple of Japanese bikes, a scary Jawa with a side car, 25 years of various BMW's and last year I picked up a garage kept 2011 Sportster with 6800 miles on it. I wanted a change, so I got the Harley. I'm very happy with it. It talks to me like my old British bikes. Easy to take care of with the belt drive , electronic ignition, fuel injection, tubeless tires and thousands of parts available.
The comfort and body position on the Harley is what is important to me. 08 Sportster 1200 C and my 2014 ultra Ltd. never ceases to impress me. I have the power I need and the rumble to accommodate it. Not about speed for me, cruising is most comfy with character. Mid controls and a forward lean is a racing posture, the forward controls deep seat and back rest is cruising posture. Many styles for all ages.
forward controls; stright up back and you need new handlebars; brought back about 12" or 30 cm. just to reach them. 2 up riding needs a new rear frame for a proper seat.
I have to say I kinda like the new Sportster. I'm glad they updated it. Mind you I'm not a Harley guy, well not anymore. I used to eat, sleep and dream Harley. Though the only Harley I owned was a 1984 Roadster. A Sportster with a fat bob style tank and 9 spoke solid wheels. I loved that bike but hated the Keihin carburetor. That sucker would clog if it sat for a few weeks. I was in the military and had to travel a lot. I'd get home and want to go for a ride but had to clean the carb first. I put three carb kits on it in 4 years.
I love the new sportster, but it will never sound like my sportster. I have a 2006 883 sportster. Last year with the carburetor. I was able to tune and adjust to get that beautiful classic horse hoof/potato sound. The news can't do that. I have had so many people want my bike because of it. I have no shame owning mine.
I have a 2018 Ultra Classic and wanted something smaller as my "around town" bike. Picked up the 2022 Sporster S in the mineral green. It's amazing! As an IT guy, I love the tech. As a Harley rider, I love the power. Already modded the bike with the Reach bars and heated grips. Makes the bike way more comfortable.
I'm glad to hear you enjoy it, and I have rented and ridden an Ultra Classic from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon and more, they're THE best...though, I would like to say that if you really enjoy the new Sportster, hop on a 2000's Buell if you ever have the chance. All of them are great, but more specifically one of the Rotax powered ones. Eric was pushing Harley for this bike over 15 years ago, but they were adamant it wouldn't sell. Interesting to see how their opinion has changed.

Absolutely agree. Key word is fun. I have 3 bikes, Streetglide ST, Pan Am, and a 1200 Roadster. The Roadster is by far the fun bike of the 3. It's set up like a Café bike, not the "best" of the 3, but the most fun by far.
A lowrider and a sporty side by side in the garage. The sporty gets the call 99 pct of the time. Sold the hog and kept the sporty. I am strictly an around town rider anymore and it's perfect for me. I love some of the new bikes like the Breakout but I know it would just sit there.
i bought one about 6 months ago. My first harley. I hated the forward controls so much that I made my own rear sets, using a combination of honda and kawasaki parts, raised the back by 2 inches. set the suspension to the softest setting and . now i love riding this bike
Make a video showing the rears! I got mid controls for mine almost imediatley after purchasing the bike and absolutely love the bike now.. would be very curios in seeing rear controls
@@XavierSturzl never uploaded to TH-cam before not sure how it's done. Main reason why I made my own is because I am in Australia and the mid controls cost about $1.500 very expensive. So I had a look at pan America rearsets and installed Honda rearsets the same way.
I test rode this bike and it is excellent! Only problem is I'm 6'2 so I look ridiculous on it. Therefore I wouldn't buy one. I've always thought Sportsters are cool bikes. My first Harley was a '09 Nightster
I went to a dealership to look at one. I was surprised how small it was. It was in the shop for service. It had been dropped and had some scrapes. It had also been ridden pretty hard and put away wet. I don't think it had ever had a bath after it left the dealership, filthy.
Got one, coming from Tiger 660 and Street Triple RS, love the power and agility however might be by the forward controls I have a terrible lower back pain on this bike (26yo). Getting the mid controls very soon, excited to see aggressive version of this beast.
I've been riding over 50 years and have owned 18+ bikes of all brands and the 1200 Sportster is probably my favorite. Not the fastest but it just fits my 5'9" body like a glove. Mustang seat makes it nearly perfect. I have ridden full 250 mile days with no discomfort
@@dddon513 guessing that mainly depends on you... THANK U, SEAN! I was wondering if I'm the only one who actually likes the rear fender. I think it looks awesome. The CB1000R and Rocket 3 have a similar fender and it's really cool! 👍🏽
Its not a crotch rocket. It doesn't need it as long as you ride you like you have some common sense. Want to go stupid fast? Just go get a turbo busa or an H2.
That only matters when tracking. One disk is more than enough to break traction on the front tire. Multiple disks are for built up heat dissipation from constant braking because motorcycle disk brakes aren't ventilated.
I traded my 2012 Forty-Eight in for a Triumph T120 Black. I def miss the comfort of the forward controls and the sweet sound but the Bonneville is the best all around bike
I bought a bike from Sean right at the start of Covid. Basically I bought it sight unseen (there were pix and a video) but I haven't had any issues with it or SRK Cycles. I'd highly recommend them!
The Sportster is a bike that I honestly used to scoff at, since I was riding a "man's bike", a Softail. Then I had the chance to hop on a buddy's Sportster, and it was some of the most fun I've had on a motorcycle, including the sportbikes I've ridden. It's nimble, quick, and raw, everything that got me into motorcycling in the first place. Is it _fast?_ No. But it's a lot more fun to ride a slower bike to its full potential than to ride a supersport at a quarter of it's potential. I had more fun banging through all 5 gears on the Sportster than I do riding my KTM Super Duke 1290 R in third gear everywhere.
? Sportster S is plenty fast. Wtf are u talking about. I own an EBR 1190sx which is lighter with the same power a 1290 superduke has and there is nothing slow about a sportster S. And I've owned about 15 different liter bikes.
@@fvgc454ss I didn't say Sportster S, I said Sportster, as in the Evo-powered classic model. Not to mention, they don't make the Sportster S with a 5-speed transmission, which should have been a giveaway. I guess owning 15 different liter bikes didn't improve your reading comprehension.
Yep. That's why I have a wide glide and a sporty. Got both for half the price of this S thing and have loads of fun. I have zero need to be in a hurry.
I have heard that the Pan America has been their best seller even over the cruiser side. The pan America can be a good all around bike with 150 horsepower. Plus the pan America has that magic carpet ride semiactive electronic suspension.
Mine was a joy up in the mountains Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming last summer. The Beartooth, Chief Joseph, and Yellowstone. I enjoyed the suspension, 2 up, more than anything.
A little sad about the Evo air cooled twin being relegated to the history books. But I am glad a grabbed one of the last when I bought a 2021 XL1200 Iron to go with my 2019 Street Glide and my 2020 Husqvarna Svartpilen 701.
I like the riding position of it, to be honest it feels REALLY good, the bike throws you hard so I find the controls forward and the angle to be quite suited
Sadly that happened around here a couple of weeks ago. The rider bought a new bike and was heading home. Sadly didn’t take the corner right and sadly lost his life.
I drive an 883, I am thinking about getting the new Nightster. I don’t have many options being short. I have to be able to touch the ground. I’m not flat footed on the Nightster and that bothers me. Also not sure on how I feel about the sound.
My first road bike was a 1984 honda v30 magna, only made for 2 years, v4 500cc engine making 64 hp, started riding it in hay field on farm, yeah i dropped it a few times on street tires. Pretty high hp for a small bike and old so you don't care about it much, topped out at 90mph at 8,000 rpm 6 gear, definitely a starter bike a young guy could get hurt on but for a $2k best ride and great seat I drove it to work and home at 2am at night many times.
My first Harley was a Sportster. Unfortunately it was during the AMF years. The bike in this review is leaps and bounds forward for the Sportster. I mean 121 hp? That's crazy man. Light pull clutch, heated grips and cruise..... nice. Thanks for this video, Sean!
Hey bro have your thoughts and opinions changed about this bike? Would be dope if you could do a follow up video after having owned one for over a year
Nice bike, and I understand why HD is leaning this way, but I really think they should have continued to make the Air cooled Sportster as well. I believe in just a few years we will no longer recognize HD, and the historic engine lope is a thing of the past. Sooo I will hold on to my Road King. Even the big twins are now liquid cooled heads. I'm sure will soon be full liquid cooled.
Literally everything is better about a liquid-cooled engine. Nostalgia is for suckers. This engine is pretty much the same size as the iron 1200, producing double the HP and (about) 30% more torque, while being lighter weight. And the only reason Honda can release the 1084cc ptwin with no issues and HD has struggled with glitches in the RevMax is because HD are inexperienced with liquid cooling and its customer base (like what you are doing) are keeping them tied to the finest technology of 1974. Like, you guys glorify an engine design that is inherently less powerful and less reliable. If HD put a RevMax into a Road King or (better yet) a Road Glide, I’ll mortgage my soul to join the Bar and Shield.
This has been harleys dilemma the entire time. Move forward and people hate it. Stay in the past and everyone bitches they are slow and underpowered. They can't win with any of you.
Great review Sean! The extra modes and assistive devices are one way to go for a newer rider, but I would generally recommend the old school method (for new riders) of buying a good used bike you can handle. Learn to ride it properly and then get a more powerful bike if you feel the need. That said, the new Sportster looks like a lot of fun! Ride on!
I like the mode idea for sensible older returning riders. And I agree with you about new riders getting smaller, lighter bikes to learn on. Those lightweight bikes are great for learning.
I own an old Harley and the S. Love them both. It is good that Harley is making newer models and looking into new technology to capture new/next generation of riders. It has been Harleys problem for quite a long time. Trying to please the old school and the new alike. I hope they succeed in this endeavor. I love the Sportster S but just like some of the old Harleys they do have kinks. Problems with sensors and check engine issues... and some models with mechanical issues right off the showroom. I understand it's a new step and a new bike, and Harley seems to be getting the problems solved with ecu/software updates. I just hope they give faster support, updates and upgrades rolled out for this bike to make it appealing and capture newer riders. If that exhaust sound doesn't cut it you can check out Zard, Cobra Sport, Jekyll and Hyde and TBR just to name a few. With these things installed, it becomes a different bike :).
I think Harley have missed a trick by reining in the motor from the full power one in the pan America. I think if they'd unleashed the full beast (with twin disk on front) they'd have sold like hot cakes, even taking converts from Japanese bikes. Quite frustrating i.m.o. It's still a great bike but it could have been a legend.
I think, Harley's biggest problem is that they've clinged on tradition and old schoolness for too long. The "po-ta-to" sound is what makes these old school Harleys (Sportster, Road King, Road Glide, etc.) desirable, at least for me. Using this RevMax engine in an old school-ish cruiser frame seems pointless, because it loses it's character. They implemented it well when introducing the Pan Am, because they understood the assignment: make a non-traditional Harley, this is also why the Sportster S is a miss. They should be developing naked bikes, that's more fitting for this new engine. They see how well the Ducati Monster and KTM 1290 are selling, they should enter the league of "ovepriced, large-displacement V-twin naked bikes". That's what would get them sales.
Has Harley finally made a successor to the XB12S, controls aside? I'm curious how that fat front tire affects handling, and if a normal sportbike front tire can easily replace it.
I like that bike it looks good out of the box. My neighbour has one the same colour he has changed the exhaust and fitted a tail tidy. He has also painted that plastic bit on the tank the same colour as the tank, that looks better. 120bhp is good. Reminds me of bar hopper as it is pretty low. Love the colour of the engine that bronze colour.
I just noticed, you said "I can clutch this with one finger," I'm probably about to buy one of these, and I've only ever ridden sport bikes for context, are there bikes with clutches that require significantly more force to pull? Just kind of confused by the statement is all.
I'm not 4 minutes into this and I gotta comment!!! First off.. WOW! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!? How you gonna get the last 1200 Sportster??? 😂😂😂 Seriously though love your content and personality 😎 again, welcome to Tennessee. Stay safe and ride hard ✌️ And now back to the program.. 😆

120hp at the crank. It's more like a 90hp at the wheel bike. Stupid numbers get thrown around just to entice people. Don't look at the numbers, test ride different brands and models.

I'm not a harley fan at all. But I can appreciate the sound of a traditional harley. And this sounds nothing like it. They are in a tough spot. They've held on to tradition so long that they really aren't going to have success trying to change. Plenty of import bikes that will out perform this for less money.
Indeed. Old harleys have their place. Why buy this when there are much better alternatives.
I was going to say it sounds very calm and foreign if that makes any sense

The thing is, the fanbase who do want the classic Harleys are getting smaller and smaller as they grow older. Younger generation does not have the same emotional attachment to the classic Harley styling and sound. If Harley wants to survive they also need to evolve and get on with the times, modernise their lineup while keep a few retro style bikes for people who do want them. Triumph got it right and are now doing really well.

That 1200 will be worth silly money in the future
Bingo
@@altortugas5979 if you’ve ever heard a sporster S with an exhaust, you’ll know it sounds terrible. They could have made something similar to an Indian scout. Sounds fantastic and makes great power. I think the sportster S is a good standalone bike, just not a replacement.

My old stroker was a tractor with a huge power envelope. The Pan Am motors require a downshift to pass someone at freeway speeds. Mine was 100% trouble free.
Hello, I’m foolish. Nice to meet you!
@@TheLouisianan yeah, I know the internet is disconnected from reality, it’s just annoying. Generally people are really kind in person
That's interesting. What do you need to know ?
@Patrick O'Brien I wasn't blaming Harley.
Do they make after market pipes for it
I have question .. Is the heat generated by the engine too annoying to buy?
It seems as if everyone forgets about Buell. So much of what was old is new again.
I still ride my 98 Buell S3 Thunderbolt it's an awesome bike that's the best of both worlds!
@@wayne5607 right? Way ahead of it’s time for sure. I miss my X1 terribly.
@@therealjasonseidel ! still have my 75 XLCH all done custom, right before I got the Buell, 54.9 RWH @ 6,300 out of an Ironhead 1,000 cc not stroked! Tested by Skeeter Todd in the EasyRiders truck with Dyno on it 1997!
I havnt forgot, rode my lightning powered sportster today.
Just looked at their brochure. Impressive machines.
Had a sportster for 2yrs and 20k miles and loved it. Had sportbikes before and afterwards and none had come close to the fun the sporty was
Seriously!? 😂 ok 😏
Cool nice review.... just wondering if the spider webs come included when shipped...
i bought one about 6 months ago.
Pan America rearsets fit on sportster S if you can find them
Mids should be standard, rearsets an accessory option. HARLEY CAN YOU HEAR US. We love your new bike but we are not fans of chopper style controls.
@@XavierSturzl what's your height? I mean how tall are you?
I like Sportsters and I see many more guys with them than girls. They are good bikes, and have a great aftermarket following.
I test rode this bike and it is excellent! Only problem is I'm 6'2 so I look ridiculous on it. Therefore I wouldn't buy one. I've always thought Sportsters are cool bikes. My first Harley was a '09 Nightster
I'm 6ft even and with the forward controls its comfortable for me
@@Adam-bb9rm He didn't say he was uncomfortable. Anyone over 5'10 would look ridiculous riding it. Its a tiny bike.
@@StefanCCCC yep, true mate. Riding position was fine. Just a small bike. Really fun though in sport mode
I went to a dealership to look at one. I was surprised how small it was. It was in the shop for service. It had been dropped and had some scrapes. It had also been ridden pretty hard and put away wet. I don't think it had ever had a bath after it left the dealership, filthy.
Like a monkey fu**ing a football.
I like my 2006 Ultra gline, but sometimes you just want to run out to the Bar and a Harley sportster is quick and simple to jump on, and fun 😎🇺🇸
Do these bikes lend themselves to riding while drunk?
@@dddon513 guessing that mainly depends on you... (but a live wire in ecomode is ur best bet for a drunk-mobile, or you can even set the throttle lower than eco as a custom setting, no clutch, beefy tires for contact and oversized breaks if u need to stop suddenly, not quite sure why I'm giving real suggestions abt this lol)
@@dddon513 HDs turn into bar parking lots all by themselves. If you don't like to have a few beers and ride, I suggest not buying a HD LOL.
THANK U, SEAN! I was wondering if I'm the only one who actually likes the rear fender. I think it looks awesome. The CB1000R and Rocket 3 have a similar fender and it's really cool! 👍🏽
ok for single; 2 up needs a new frame and seat. Sure we both want to ride
I cant believe it only has one front disc
Its not a crotch rocket. It doesn't need it as long as you ride you like you have some common sense. Want to go stupid fast? Just go get a turbo busa or an H2.
@@spartanx169x I am sorry but for the speed ,weight of it and the price , I would expect it
@@spartanx169x 20k out the door for this tiny bike and single front rotor, typical H-D rip off.
You don't know how to properly use a front brake, so one disc is plenty. My 1996 XL1200S has dual disc's but only one piston per caliper.
That only matters when tracking. One disk is more than enough to break traction on the front tire. Multiple disks are for built up heat dissipation from constant braking because motorcycle disk brakes aren't ventilated.
For a girls bike it sure saved Harley from being non-existent today
I traded my 2012 Forty-Eight in for a Triumph T120 Black. I def miss the comfort of the forward controls and the sweet sound but the Bonneville is the best all around bike
agree; but i have the street twin; smooth, comfy but not a 2 up bike
Maybe now I am not capable to buy any bike from you, but someday definitely I’ll buy a bike from buddy.
God Bless you & your family 😇
I enjoyed the suspension, 2 up, more than anything.
if you can get over the look of it
Is the tank for the Sportster s metal like the nightster 975
The best thing in the Harley shop window is the reflection of my Ducati 😊😊😊😊
A little sad about the Evo air cooled twin being relegated to the history books. But I am glad a grabbed one of the last when I bought a 2021 XL1200 Iron to go with my 2019 Street Glide and my 2020 Husqvarna Svartpilen 701.
I'm more than just a little sad about it as the Evo was pure H D. The 883 and 48 were true entry level bikes and I missed the chance to buy a new one.
air cooled anything dont' work in hot countries.
Yep,, that’s sad
Sad

Watch the woke nightster reveal. It was so far from what Harley even stands for
@@jayteesgear What Harley stands for? You mean a long history of over priced, outdated tech, underpowered, oil leaking bikes? That Harley?

This has been harleys dilemma the entire time. Move forward and people hate it. Stay in the past and everyone bitches they are slow and underpowered. They can't win with any of you.
Great review Sean! The extra modes and assistive devices are one way to go for a newer rider, but I would generally recommend the old school method (for new riders) of buying a good used bike you can handle. Learn to ride it properly and then get a more powerful bike if you feel the need. That said, the new Sportster looks like a lot of fun! Ride on!
This is a scam
I like the mode idea for sensible older returning riders.
And I agree with you about new riders getting smaller, lighter bikes to learn on. Those lightweight bikes are great for learning.
Mid controls should be a no charge option for the bike. Can't wait to see if the Motor Co. releases the Bronx anytime soon!👍
Not happening
This is how they double their profits, you basically buy the bike twice.
So you like this Sportster S more than an XR1200R or X?
Sean I wish you are fine. It has been a while since you posted a content here.
It’s my dream bike . Don’t care what people say everyone has their opinion
The suspension sucks 1.5 inches of travel on the rear what where they thinking
A bike made for looks, and not even by Americans, the design and manufacturing is done in India
Sean, what do you think about the handling in slower speeds and turning. Thanks,
Joe
Thanks for the info, what the name of your helmet and the dash cam on it. ?
I love Sean’s reviews! “Old sportster, 60hp, new one, 121hp. ALMOST double!” LMAO
camera on forgot how to math....... lol
Not a sportster. V Rod.
I agree. If they do produce the Bronx it most definitely have the full power 1250 the PA has. Then they would have one badass naked sport bike.
Not sure about the new triumph rocket. But I had a 2016 triumph rocket. I wonder if this sportster is faster off the line?
With over double the engine capacity they’ve managed to make a bike basically just as fast as an r6 just less reliable
hahaha its sooo different.
We don't know how reliable it is. We won't for awhile.
It might be 2x the capacity, but the R6 has 2x the cylinders
@@wildcat67-b7n very true, so you might as well get the r6 since it’s about the same price or cheaper 🤙

Harley Davidson = Typewriter in a digital world.
Sure, it handled great and was fun in she short, straight shots. But how does it handle and feel on the curves?
was never a harley fan, but love the new sportster.
Has Harley finally made a successor to the XB12S, controls aside? I'm curious how that fat front tire affects handling, and if a normal sportbike front tire can easily replace it.
I’ve done 8 hour days on my Sportster S. Also you you change the riding mode to Sport, it will go to 60mph quicker.
Hey Shawn, great video. Why don’t you tie your helmet all the time?
I like that bike it looks good out of the box. My neighbour has one the same colour he has changed the exhaust and fitted a tail tidy. He has also painted that plastic bit on the tank the same colour as the tank, that looks better. 120bhp is good. Reminds me of bar hopper as it is pretty low. Love the colour of the engine that bronze colour.
I just noticed, you said "I can clutch this with one finger,"
I'm probably about to buy one of these, and I've only ever ridden sport bikes for context, are there bikes with clutches that require significantly more force to pull? Just kind of confused by the statement is all.
Is it there a way to have front and mid controls on one bick?
