The Evolution Harley Lacked in One Area to The Twin Cam

  • The Evolution Harley lacked in one area compared to the Twin Cam and that's the cooling the system. The Evo Harley didn't run very hot but it did lack in the cooling system due to the much smaller and lesser number of cooling fins. The Twin Cam was upgraded with larger cylinders, more fins and not only more cooling fins but larger. This increased the cooling surface area which was good for the motor but it also had some unintended consequences. The Twin Cam engine cooled better, but it generated more heat which in the end was transferred to the rider.

I'm 62 years old and have been riding since I was 16. I have owned a broad variety of Harleys, including Ironhead Sportsters (my all-time favorite, having been through three of them before I was 19, and still riding the third one purchased when I was 19, a 1976 XLCH). My current "modern" Harley is my second Twin Cam, a 2013 Road King, purchased new to replace my 2000 Road King that was rather unceremoniously run over by an F250. With my wife and I still on it... That bike ran a very uneventful 120,000 miles before its demise, and the current example is fast approaching 80,000. Absolutely the two most rouble free vehicles, two wheeled or four, I have ever owned. And my wife drive Subarus. My two "Twinkies" have so vastly outperformed and outlived any of my Evos (not to mention the Shovels) that they aren't even in the same league. I have rolled up an honest 600,000+ miles on my variety of Harleys owned over the years and, I'm here to tell you, the Twinkie has won me over. As a long range, high mileage touring bike, they cannot be beat. I don't hot rod them - I ride them "as is", save for touring oriented mods (racks, seats, pegs, etc.), which may be the "key to my success". Leave 'em stock inside, and they are wonderfully reliable, long lived touring machines. I plan on "riding off into the sunset" on my current Road King.

My ‘06 FXDWGI has been reliable so far and has always got me home running the same as when I left, but it does get warm between the legs at long stop lights. I’ve got to quit watching your engine upgrade videos, Foo, as I’m satisfied with my stock 88 TC when I’m riding, but then I come home and watch your videos and say “Oh, I need that!”. I did get a fan assisted horizontal mount oil cooler for it and I’m switching to Amzoil for the engine, primary, and transmission when I install the cooler at my next oil change. I’ve also got some hard bags and a Harley speedo/tach combo to install but as I get older that “more power” addiction is waning as old age creeps in. That is until I watch one of your big bore, hotter cams, air cleaner, or other upgrades that instantly get me to thinking “I gotta have that!” so back off on the Twin Cam upgrade videos, Foo, or at least have TH-cam post “Warning that this video may be hazardous to your wallet.” before them.

  • @telcobilly
    @telcobilly ปีที่แล้ว +9

I read an article 20 years ago about the TC vs the Evo and what issues were addressed. The TC had improved alloys for reduced porosity and greater strength, the gearbox bolted directly to the crankcase for increased rigidity, no more inner primary cracking, oiling system was improved, 50% greater fin area for improved cooling. The twicam design was for improved valve train geometry but the chain drive was to reduce sound emissions to placate the EPA. Unfortunately, HD was slow to fix issues like the cam tensioners and they began to cheap out by going with pressed together cranks.
I love my 2006 Springer Classic so I had the cam chest redone with S&S oilpump, hydraulic tensioners and innerplate. If it ever needed a new engine, I'd go S&S..none of the new bikes appeal to me..

If Harley Davidson never existed I probably wouldn’t have been drawn into 2 wheels in the first place. I like the simplicity of my EVO which allows me to do all the work on it. My 2 Twin Cams are very reliable and easy to operate but if something goes wrong with the electronics, well, I'm screwed! On the Evo you can adjust timing or put a performance ignition kit or a single fire ignition kit and coils on it. Twin cams get very expensive when you try and tune them and if it wont start, well there are so many sensors and controls that could go wrong that it would take you forever to test everything.

I really like your channel, because you put out good, solid info with a minimum of BS.
I've been riding, wrenching on, and building Harleys for the past 40yrs, but I draw the line at twin cams.
I've never understood the need that some people have for more power and speed, because it all seems like just a money wasting power trip of some type.
Too many owners spend a fortune on the damned things just to leave them sitting in garages.
I know a guy who bought a "bagger" that was built on a TV series, rode it all of twice, never sat his ass on a motorcycle seat again, and just let it fall apart in his shop.
It took me 30yrs to warm up enough to the Evo engine to buy a used '97 WideGlide with the stock 80inch Evo, and I now have 41,000 trouble free miles on it.
I also still have a box stock '72 ElectraGlide that I bought in 198o that has about a million virtually trouble free miles on it.
Even though I made money working on Harleys, my advice has always been, "Buy it, ride it, and leave the damned thing the hell alone."
Don't keep "fixing" it until it breaks.

I'm old enough to remember brand-new panheads, knucks and Ironheads. I currently have one if each including the M8 and a twin cam. I'm currently setting my sites on the bigger C.I. engines. Point being, the M8 or the twin cam are far superior engines than the afore mentioned engines above. In that sense I'm grateful for both. As the engines evolved the "the take with you toolbox" became smaller and smaller. So anyone out there complaining about their M8 or twin cam go buy you an Ironhead, panheads or knuckle head. Be sure to buy a repair and service manual and update your insurance to be sure you have free towing through A.A.A. or equivalent. As always a thought provoking and informative video. Thanks for posting and as always...... keep on keeping on brother.

Riding Harleys since the sixties, have had twenty three with NY '08 TwinCam being NY current bike.
Had a lot of Flattys, a bunch of Pannys, a Knuck/Pan strocker that I've had since nineteen seventy five, three Shovels and two Buell Ligtnings.
Of all my bikes, that I have ridden long and far and hard, my '81 WideGlide ran over 300,000, my second Buell and this TwinCam have been close to bulletproof.
Never had a Blockhead... probably due to the rash of yuppys who bought into them and also because I couldn't get my eye around that ugly square design...
Anyway my TwinCam just presents me with a reliabke dream ride and I value her dependant nature beyond words.

I’ve put 150 thousand trouble free miles on 2 Evos. My 1990 fan 95 thousand miles, with nothing more than replacing one bad valve at about 90k. I put a torque cam in it at around 40k. My 96 Fuel Injected Evo gave me 60k but it was just Stage One, and it was a dog as far as power, and I had some trouble with the Fuel I system. I put 50k on my 2001 Stage One TC, and was just about to do the cam chain adjusters, but traded it in on my present 2012 FLHTK TC103. I did a Stage 2 several years ago, and last year at only 28k I did a Stage Two, with a Woods TW 222, V&H Headers, Pipes, Rinehart Intake, FP3 decat. What a difference’s. The heat is down, power is up, no more detonation, and I still get nearly the same fuel milage. I’ve only got about 35k on it now, but at 72 years of age, the 950lb. beast is getting a little tuff for me to manage in slow speed maneuver s. It’s too dam top heavy. I’d like to buy a new RGL, but not for $36-37K for a bike that’s basically what I have now. So my next bike may well be a Goldwing. It’s almost 150lbs. lighter than my Ultra, and has a lower center of gravity. Plus the reverse is great, the suspension is flawless, all LED lighting and no reason to upgrade, like you have to do with Harleys.

Every engine that Harley made, had teething issues. We practically worship the Knuckle but look at the amount of running changes the factory had to make to it. The Evo was arguably the best engine they made, but as you point out , it had shortcomings as well. You always have to give up something to get something. It's a law.

Usually I am 100% with you, but on this one, I am not. The Twin Cam ran 20 degrees hotter than the Evo. It was running leaner and hotter, they used oil jets to help contain the heat. They had to give larger and more fins to combat the heat of the TC. TC's ran hot simple as that. Other than that you have been right on the money. Keep going.
