Parabolic Leaf Springs: Are they worth it?

  • Finally after a decade on the same springs Olboy is getting some new springs! But not just any springs... a full Terrain Tamer parabolic lift kit.
    They have been kind enough to let me try out their newly released kit and see what I think!
    Parabolics have so many advantages, being able to carry varying loads whilst maintaining a comfortable ride and being lightweight!
    I will be running this kit for awhile to suss out what I like and dislike but so far I have no complaints! I have been able to do away with extended shackles whilst maintaining the same wheel travel.
    Any questions please comment down below and I will get back to you!

    Gday Danie, I’m a retired truck driver, I remember the first truck I drove with parabolic springs, I found them noticeable better then multi leaf and smoother ride in the front with and less “thump” through the steering column and they also stood up well cornering, there a good thing in my opinion mate, great video, cheers

      With parabolics the shock becomes even more important, because of the extra rebound and bounce parabolics typically give you need a decent shock to handle the rebound. I’ve had them both on trucks (meritor 7.2t steer axles) I preferred multi spring over parabolic with super singles, as it didn’t want to wallow on narrow roads and on corrugations, but I used to run either big red roo shocks or kings remote res shocks.

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SUPERTRUCKER166 I've found dobinsons to have a great rebound adjustment on their MRAs ties in really well with the range of adjustment in the high and low compression

    • @SUPERTRUCKER166
      @SUPERTRUCKER166 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DanieSimpson yeah they make a decent shock, but they don’t make shocks to suit the big gear (ie 6t offroad trucks right through to road trains) we typically use either red roo’s or kings with custom valving and stroke length. But this is for gear that spend most of their life on dirt

    So much good info in this video. I have a 79 single cab with a demountable camper on the rear tray. My weight is 3.5T fully loaded. Your videos inspired me to get the terrain tamer parabolics. I have the 500-700kg 4 leaf pack - they're brilliant, such a massive improvement. Only problem is the rear sits about 20mm lower than I'd like and the springs are *just* sitting on the rubber on the lowest leaf when loaded. So it's clear I'm under sprung. I can't decide if I should change to the 700kg+ 5 leaf pack from terrain tamer or add airbags. I like the simplicity and reliability of the parabolics but I'm concerned when the camper is off the 5 leaf will be too way too firm.. The airbags will give more adjustment between camper on and off but I'm not sure if I'll be overloading them and risk damaging the chassis at 3500kg. I'd really appreciate some advice. Add airbags or upgrade the leaf pack? Thanks Danie!

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oh thats so awesome to hear they made an improvement!
      if this is a VDJ79 at 3.5T we can estimate 1.5T will be your front axle load, leaving 2T rear axle load. Factory is around 1T, so you are nearly at +1000kg on the rear axle. Id definitely recommend a higher rated rear spring and possibly a set of airbags to level the ride height when loaded.

    Hi Danie, I have the TT 500-700Kg Parabolics in the79 single cab. Heaps better ride and can hold a reasonable amount of weight but not what they advertise. Your vehicle should sit the same as a brand new ute from the factory (Cab Chassis only) with 500kg constant load. ie. tray canopy gear etc... It would interesting to see if there 75 series springs hold up. I still think they are a good spring alternative and wouldn't go back to the heavy 11 pack i ran previously.

    Danie, I couldn't tell for sure from the video if you used any wedge shims for adjusting front axle caster angle or cross caster effect for the crown of a highway. Everything one adds or subtracts as per length of shackle also tips the angles of the diffs and cause caster changes as well as ujoint angles front and rear. Anyway just wondered how that all went and if you think you will need to do some fine tuning with wedges for steering/handling or joint angles. I am blown away by just how much you shed in weight of spring material, that is almost worth it in itself.

    Hi Danie,
    Do you have anymore feedback on these now you have had them on for a while? I do like the idea of picking up 200+ kg.
    How do they stand up to the continuous load?

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so great. I haven't removed my canopy or roof top so had continuous load for almost a year. no sagging at all. I've thrown my old leafs out and I've bought the same springs for my 60 build now too.
      I have reinstalled my Dobinsons remote res shocks though as they all time favourite shock.

  • @Ltlazyass
    @Ltlazyass 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Alternatively, instead of parabolics you can run longer leafs. Rides really well and has more available travel/flex, am able to comfortably drop a 35 past the sill in the front on my 75.

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes there are many options for leafs hence why the 76 has custom leafs and not parabolics. not all options suit everyone.

    Danie, did you have any difference in ride height at the front? I have looked at getting the parabolic for the front to soften the ride in simple terms are they more comfortable?

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      going from extended shackles to standard shackles is what changed the ride height but only by about 10-20mm and achieved more travel out of the suspension. So a much safer and legal ride with better offroad capabilities:)
      yes if you went from a standard multi pack to a parabolic you would definitely notice the difference. I noticed it most on offroad tracks, much comfier and more spongey feeling. The footage right at the end was an example.

    Without air in your airbags or limited air anyway. Do they sag much with the canopy setup. I have a old 75 and have multi leafs. Probably are as old as yours. I've been looking at parabolic for ages but with a heavy steel tray aswell as 2 big toolboxes packed with tools gear etc. I'm worried they will sag and not hold the load and it'll look like I tried getting the stupid cali lean going. Cheers mate

    • @DanieSimpson
      @DanieSimpson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the video at 9mins where I show it from the side is with no air in the airbags. I usually keep about 5-10psi in them usually though. will all depend on the weight but long as you get the correct rating for your weight should be an issue with sagging but I will definitely be seeing that with mine
