    In this non-influencer style, critical review video I get behind the wheel of the brand new 2022 Audi RS3 Sportback to bring you the first review published on UK roads. I was hoping to get invited to one of the official media events seeing as I have in the past and I've had good numbers for previous A3/S3/RS3 videos but the invite never came. All I will say is that if you see a review that doesn't mention the significant downgrade in interior material quality (not build quality which is still good) over the old '8V' generation, then I'd question that person's motives for ignoring one of the most significant details an unbiased and honest reviewer should have at the top of their list, particularly someone with experience of the old '8V' generation car with its top quality plastics and fabrics (and significantly lower price tag....)
    Big thanks to ex-Up! GTI owner John Walpole at Tetbury Audi for inviting me down to the beautiful UK Cotswolds on a glorious Autumn day to make this video which having been filmed on UK roads is much more representative for the typical buyer than the billiard table smooth tarmac of Germany & Austria.
    The excellent evo magazine said the paddles were small and felt cheap (though they didn't actually say they were plastic, my mistake(Autocar did a bit later!)

      Thanks Steve! I am beginning to realise honesty is a rare commidity in the TH-cam car review world. I am not saying people lie, but when you earn a living from YT you quickly learn there is a connection between being invited to events and being loaned press cars and not being too critical. I'd say nearly all the big automotive channels don't provide critical reviews. Luckily I don't pay my mortgage with YT and I can get cars new and old from other sources to review but I am beginning to feel a bit of an outcast, all because of being honest and providing valid consumer advice. Hopefully in time this strategy will pay dividends but right now, honesty doesn’t pay

    Apparently it’s a functional side vent btw. I spoke to audi in Germany and they confirmed that it’s functional, just that the duct isn’t direct so as to avoid wheel debris going through.

    • @volkswizard

      I did wonder as it wasn't blocked off but they have a history of faking it so when I saw no intake in the arch. When they say it's functional, did they say what function it served?

      Hmm interesting, so there must be an intake somewhere. Will soon tell by the dirt left by the air stream. I know 991.1 GT3 RS had the grilles in the wing tops to assist with downforce but you kind of trust Porsche GT to do that right.

    Biggest issue I have with my PFL RS3 is the chassis, this one seems to address this. The thing I love is the noise, this sounds pretty muted.
    I'm no BMW fan but they have a new alternative, the M240i X Drive. Just as quick and cheaper. Jo Achilles managed a 3.7 0-60. With adaptive dampers, sunroof + discount its £43k. Arguably a much better drivers car. Very tempting and a pretty 2 door coupe design.

    Like the review and your honesty. Really the interior should feel better than the S3 for how much more it costs. One thing that might have been missed here is, is it worth it to upgrade to this from the FL 8V RS3? I've got a 2018 FL non-PPF RS3 Saloon (actually nearly bought your floret silver one at the time) so was wondering about this. Some parts of it I like but others parts I dislike, and most importantly it is quieter, which is a big selling point about the RS3 so not good. Overall it looks to be about the same speed, at first it seemed like even though it was still 400hp that it was faster, due to Auditography's video on it going 0-100kmph in 3.1 seconds but carwow's one was 3.63 seconds to 60, when the FL RS3 non-PPF has got 3.7/3.8 to 60 before, so not much difference. So its all about the dynamics like you said. Guess the only way to find out is by test driving it. It is my daily driver so it might not be as noticeable with how traffic is nowadays.

    Poor example to review, as it's basically the lowest spec you can get. Wait until the carbon edition arrives and with the RS Dynamic Pack, plus the right colour - then we're talking. I have a tango red sportback in carbon black trim with C&S Pack and RS Dynamic Pack on order. It’s alot of money, but you’re ultimately paying the extra for that unique engine. I think it looks really aggressive too. Just a shame the sound is so muted. Why they couldn’t at least put some pops and crackles on the overrun and give it some character, i just don’t understand. Can’t blame emissions and GPF’s either, as the RS Megane and the i30N both sound incredible!

    Great summing up - the A3/S3 is nothing particularly notable, but....that engine! It sounds amazing! You're spot on by saying that engine forgives a lot - it's characterful, in a way that practically all other engines aren't (including the E888 engine in my R).
    I've always been more of a VW fan, rather than Audi - the image, for one thing. (I also don't like the philosophy that you have to sacrifice practicality with Audi). I struggle with the interior of the A3 (think my Wife hasn't figured out her A3 yet 🤣), but I'd certainly like to try the previous RS3 (preferably a "run out" model).

    Was adaptive cruise spec’d on this car? Audi UK have said that you can’t spec it with the flat bottom wheels but the stalk looked like it had distance control in the review.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes indeed. As I said the spec is odd and quite tempting because of things like that. You have to have the driver assistance pack to get acc and even dynamic light assist which then means a round wheel. So many compromises needed which at £55k shouldn't be the case with an A3 based car.

    • @mike_kokuz17
      @mike_kokuz17 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@volkswizard Just doesn’t seem right does it. If we had the option to add these without the assistance pack and if the interior was lifted by some colour like the European version, Audi UK would be on to a real winner, even at £55-60K!

    I might be biased, but that's again another review that confirms I did good ordering one. • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes the Golf 8 reviews got me into trouble with VW as big publications were vexed they didn't get in before me. RS3 is a great car but being forced to have a round steering wheel if you want ACC and no interior design packs for UK too mean a lot of compromises on a car that at £60k needs to be perfection.
      Haven't seen any other reviews but controlled is probably the right word for that event having seen the perplexing guest list....

    My Father had the 2018 Audi RS3 pre-PPF and it sounded better than this current RS3 in my opinion. He found the car too noisy on start up every single morning before travelling to work which was fun at first but over time became annoying. He placed his order on 4 June 2021 for a brand new Porsche Taycan 4S Cross Turismo which he will be collecting the first week of January 2022. The other car that he currently has is the 2019 VW Golf TCR 3-Door which he also enjoys.

      Tricky as car was too new to fully thrash, the R is something else and 0-60 with Car Wow in under 4 secs. It's same weight but less power so RS3 just has to be quicker but there won't be much in it and Clubsport is just as fast one you are rolling so basically RS3 isn't worth paying extra for if you want speed as those 2 are mental for the cash.
