  • Update video for those that asked about my 3.0 Duramax with too frequent of regens. We thought it was caused by the S&B intake, but that doesn't appear to be the cause. I looked into an update to the ecm via an over the air update, not the case. lastly, maybe a switch from winterized fuel to #2 diesel? I went ahead and did a small quantity fuel adjustment reset.

    The problem with seeing all that data is kinda like seeing how the sausage is made....sometimes it's just TMI. I've got just over 82k on my 2020 Mini Max and it's 100% OEM still running just fine and never seen the inside of a dealership garage.

    So this just started on my 24 LZ0… it actually went into limp mode (it never alerted me to “keep driving”). After a trip to the dealership to do a forced regen, I decided to get the Banks idash. 75 miles later, and it’s doing another regen! It’s doing them about every 100 miles or so now. I have 3500 miles on the engine. Stock.

      I think you have an actual issue and I am assuming your dpf will clog up again and need some diagnosis to find the cause of that. If it gets so bad that it kicks you into limp mode, there is a greater issue.

    As per my last post to your previous post. I'm basically sitting where I was as far as regens, 2 since my last post 192 miles and 196 miles respectively, so I'm still sitting in the 190-200 mile avg range since new. I watch the regen as its happening on every one, last regen was different than previous ones in that normally regen shuts off at ~28% SL, last regen lasted longer and didn't shut off until 7% SL. As far as after, it started going up just as quick as the others kind of hung in the 50% range for longer than usual. I don't expect to see any diff however. As far as fuel, typically winterized fuel would have a lower BTU/#/gallon rating than straight #2 diesel, however the cetane level would be higher in winterized fuel ( Typical cetane ratings for No. 2 diesel would be 46 - 48. No. 1 diesel is usually about 51 - 53) Which would equate to the #1 fuel being faster and cleaner burning, however less MPG due to the lower BTU rating. So you theory about fuel does hold some value. A test may be add 5 gallon of kerosene per tank (if you can find some locally) and do that for a couple of tanks and see what happens to your regen mileage. I do find it conceivable that the differences could be attributed to all the sensors information is derived from, the validity of said data and how the software interprets that data. Just my $.02 worth......In the end I'm so far still pleased with my baby Duramax, I've had 2 of the big brother an LMM (wish I would have kept that one) and an LML (only issue with it was 3 DEF tank heater failures).

    Thank you for your videos, i have a 2023 gmc elevation with the 3.0. I got it mostly for towing, however my towing is short distance, 2 to 7 miles, 15 times a day. Pulling approximately 4k. When the truck was new, i didn't tow for about 800 miles to break it in, i only had 2 regens, i have a Banks data monster also.
    Now my regens are occurring every 2 days, between 60 and 90 miles.
    I don't like to keep shutting off the truck during regen so i put it in low and don't go any higher than 4th, keeping the rpms around 2500. I can do a complete regen in 4 to 5 miles at 25 to 30 mph. However, after regen, the soot load rises to 40% very quickly either towing or even on the highway empty.
    I'm very happy with this truck , my mpg short distance towing is fantastic at 18 to 21 mpg and I'm still getting 35+ on the highway!
    I have 3500 miles on the truck.
    I have owned diesels before, a Datsun 2.0 and a Dodge 5.9 Cummins.

    Appreciate the videos and the effort to isolate the source of frequent regens. Im averaging 160 miles between regens in a 24 AT4 3.0L. Im at 4000 miles, and the 160 miles between regens has been consistent.
    Do you think that the type of driving can effect regen frequency. My daily drive commute is only 6 miles each way. Ill tack on some additional milage during the week running errands but they are all short trips. I've got an iDash, and though i know its not necessary, if i hit a regen on one of these shorter runs i continue to drive until the regen compltetes. On weekends I go out for 30 - 60 mile drives. No towing.
    My engine is stock. I do add 1oz of Hotshots EDT every fillup. Where i live in NC rarely ever hits single digit temps so no idea if we get winterized diesel.

    I have completely stock 2023 LZ0 with currently 15k miles. According to my diagnostic computer, I have had 34 regens during the life of the truck so for which is around 400-440 miles per regen, but after I saw the video I did a couple checks and now it looks to be running around 200 miles per regen but it's still keeping average regen time around 10 minutes to complete. I run this truck 100 miles a day 5 days a week and still stay around an average of 27.5 mpg. I will keep monitoring to see if stays consistent or continues to fall. Not sure if this will help but at least it's more information for everything to chew on.

    i don't have the Banks, but typically can tell when a regen is in progress from the smell and or the rpm being at 900 at idle and I am also doing very frequent regens, last time it was 60-70 miles and prior to that it was less than 100 miles, basically it did a regen every couple of days.

    My comment as per winter vs summer diesel goes back years ago so no doubt slightly different fuel components and the engines had a much lower injection pressure. It was said that diesels that did a lot of idling and short spurts of work and then sat there idling again day in and day out ran better on winter fuel all year around because the fuel burned more efficiently/completely at the low EGT no load type use where as they would smoke and slobber more with summer fuel. Of course there was no DPF back then but do have to wonder if even these engines of today have a slightly different burn characteristic and create more or less soot depending on the type of fuel being burned.

    I have been saying the same thing for 4 months when it comes to “Regen premature issues”.. My “23 Chevy Silverado 1500 having the 3.0L - LZ0, is doing this same similar regen “mode” every 120-140 miles as far as I have seen, since I have got the truck most likely too, back in Dec of last year, and therefore noticed it in particular just after I installed the iDash, while being able to see it when it starts the regen mode of course. Although my truck’s regen does not last more than 11 miles to 14 miles as far as I have seen too, but the repetition of these cycles is what concerned me in the beginning, since I thought that is not normal at all, but now since I have over 12000 miles on board, then I am not that concerned with this idea anymore.. It seems to work just fine each and every time.. Not sure why, but it appears like numerous other people complained the same thing too, while having to many regens at a very low miles in between them, at or around 100+ miles.. I also still have all stock “applications“ on my truck, and without any modifications so far, and therefore nothing truly changed to my engine so far, in order to have more doubts when it comes to this regen issues.. However, I use the Lucas additive for diesel engines most of the time when I fill up my truck, and since this is a little improvement to the diesel fuel into my tank, lubrication, as well as mileage per gallon, while I add just a little bit each and every time, then all I can tell is that the engine sound pretty nice all the time while running.. I would assume that the Lucas Additive would have nothing to do with the regen mode most likely, but that is just my opinion.. I actually use Lucas Additive for many many years and never ever got any issues so far, with any of my previous 3 Rams 2500’s while having 6.7L Cummins, including this Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck while I bought it brand new.. Cheers!!

      I would like to know as well please. Especially if a reset/relearn fixes things. I hate that I used to get 30mpg when the truck was breaking on the highway. Which was supposed to be getting worse fuel mileage until broken in and now I'm at 27k miles getting 21-23 mpg on the highway. So it definitely went the other way. I'm on a 23 at4. And I haven't gotten a ota since July maybe August of 23. And history was showing before then I was getting one every 2 maybe 3 months. It's almost like the 24th came out so they stopped updating the 23s..
      And don't the updates only patch software for the infotainment unit and things like autopilot cruise control ECT. Things like engine flashing have to be done by the dealer?

    • @DemonWorks

      I will answer the scantool question in a little bit, this one is for the OTA updates. It is my understanding the OTA updates are only for infotainment related updates but since a few people had also asked about the possibility of an OTA update coming through, I wanted to make certain it didn't happen, GM is capable of anything at this point... especially with so many people reporting the same thing as I am all at the same time.

    Recently I’ve been seeing a thing around the internet where people are saying to go into manual and run the truck in 7th gear at highway speeds during regen. Supposedly the higher exhaust flow cleans out the filter better and results in a longer cycle, and also eliminates that mysterious jump from low percentage back up to ~50%.
    Thoughts on this procedure? Have you tried this? I typically hit back roads and go 45 during regen to save my fuel mileage, but I’m seeing about 200 miles per regen also now.

    • @DemonWorks
      @DemonWorks  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I am not onboard with that idea, I understand the thought process but typically more RPM will actually help decrease egt versus lugging. I think no matter what, the system will get the temps it wants. As for the quick to 50%, mine varies on that.

    • @RobVarley
      @RobVarley หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you want to get a diesel hot you lug the motor. More rpm puts more air through the engine which can lower egt. I don’t think your idea would work unless you were under load.

    • @leloup6989
      @leloup6989 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’ve played around with this: i’ve found keeping rpm around or above 2k rpm quickens the regen from 12-14min to 8-10min

      @@DemonWorks I’ve seen that the system def gets the temp that it wants no matter what, based on different driving conditions. But so far I’ve stuck with my normal routine when possible. If I’m in the middle of a trip I just let it regen, but if it hits near home like it often does then I take a big loop around the country block at 45 and let it do its thing that way. Mine doesn’t always jump right back up, but it seems that regardless of what it’s at after finishing a trip with a regen, the next trip it will quickly jump up to 45-55% after it’s warms up.

    Sounds like the intake was causing one of two things due to the MAF location and changes in flow
    a “rich” situation resulting in more soot in the DPF
    A lean situation would cause high EGT’s and those high EGT’s being recognized as a regen (maybe?)
    Recommend monitoring AF ratios and AF learning (if possible), maybe put it on a dyno and replicate normal driving with and without the intake and take note of the AF and EGT changes
    Rule of thumb for all my forced induction vehicles is to not mess with intakes and downpipes without a proper tune. But I also have the tendency to go all out with speed density tuning and deleting all emissions equipment on my projects 😂
