The point that most people don’t think about is the 4.30 will reduce the torque load on the transmission which will make it last much longer. True your mileage will be lower. I have a 4.30 gas and I get 13 mpg average. 17 mpg running empty on the highway at 75 mph and 10 mpg pulling a 6x12 ft box trailer.

@kb9knd Hey thanks for commenting, the whole mileage issue has so many variables, Elevation, terrain, speed, wind. Not to mention, you can take two or three identical trucks set up the exact same way and one will do better that the others just because a sensor somewhere is a little off the spec compared to the other vehicles. The putting less stress on the transmission idea is true to a certain extent. If a 4:30 truck and a 3:73 truck are identical in every way except gears and are both towing the same load in the same gear, the statement is true. However if I am pulling a 12,000 lb. load with 3:73 and in 7th gear in my transmission which is one to one and you are pulling that same 12,000 lb. load in your 4:30 truck both of us doing the same speed but you are in 9th or even 10th, your over drive gears are putting more stress on the transmission than my 7th gear with a one to one ratio. So yes if a 4:30 truck runs 7th gear it has some stress relieved compared to the 3:73 in 7th. However the big statement most 4:30 guys make is how they can tow in 9th or 10th gear. That is not an apples to apples comparison to 7th or 8th gear and 3:73 gear if doing the same speed. I hope that makes sense. Thanks for watching and for contributing to the conversation.

@@robertweller2662 I agree with you. Something else to consider, with regard to towing with the 4.30 in 9th and 10th gear, one look at the final drive ratios for the 4.30 and the 3.73 explains why this is happening with the 4.30 and not the 3.73, at least in theory. Simplifying the case to eliminate all variables except gearing, engine and tire size, let's look at the case of the 4.30 driver, who is having no problem towing a particular load with a particular truck on a particular terrain, and the 3.73 driver, who with everything else being equal, is not able to tow the same load under the same circumstances in 9th or 10th gear.
With the 4.30, the final drive ratios are 2.95 for 9th, and 2.72 for 10th. At 60mph, that is 1796 rpm in 9th and 1652 rpm in 10th. For the 3.73, the final drive ratios are 2.56 for 9th, and 2.36 for 10th, which are significantly taller than the final drive ratios with the 4.30 in the same gears. At 60 mph, the 3.73 driver turns only 1558 rpm in 9th and 1433 rpm in 10th.
In order for someone with a 3.73 to tow the same load at the same speed on the same terrain with the same truck as someone with the 4.30, they would need to drop down to 8th, where the final drive ratio is 3.17 for the 3.73 with 1930 rpm at 60 mph, and stay out of 9th and 10th with the 3.73 since those gears deliver final drive ratios that are too tall for towing this load with this truck on this terrain. Keep in mind that the 3.73 driver in 8th gear will have a shorter final drive ratio (3.17) and higher RPM (1930) as compared to the 4.30 driver in 9th gear (2.95 and 1796 RPM). This could be viewed as both a positive (stronger pulling) or a negative (higher RPMs and less MPG) for the 3.73.
I hope this makes at least some sense. I'm not an engineer or some sort of rocket scientist by far, but to my basic mind this helps me wrap my arms around what is happening when 4.30 drivers tow in 9th and 10th and 3.73 drivers have difficulty doing so and must drop down to 8th (again, with everything else being equal!!).

@@StilettoSniperI don't know what made me come back to this vid and stumble across this comment but this was fantastic info!
Honestly, the more stuff I read about how gearing and drive ratios and this 10-speed transmission all work, the more comfortable I am that I went with 3.73 gears. They really do seem like a very happy medium for someone who drives more miles unloaded than loaded. Sure, towing in 7th (or having to drop to 6th for a big incline) will put more stress on the trans, but that's not really going to matter much in the long run if you are not pulling close to max every other day.
For a weekend warrior like myself, towing 12-13K lbs max no more than a dozen times per year, the higher ratio makes all the unloaded (or lightly loaded, BJs runs haha) miles more comfortable with drive and saves a bit of gas. I test drove two F350 Lariats that were nearly identical except for the gearing and I liked the way the 3.73s and trans worked together better, and that I got less or no wheel spin on take off at angles or off of loose ground vs the 4.30s.
Case in point, these trucks were built to work, so if you're worried about putting a bit more stress on the trans by towing a year or two lower, maybe just get a diesel at that point.

@@SliderFury1 Hey thanks for replying to my comment. The interesting thing is that specifically in the example that you mentioned, if you are towing your load happily in 7th gear with an F350 7.3L with a 10R140 trans and 3.73 gears, there is a real strong possibility that someone with the same setup as you (including load and terrain) except for having 4.30 gears will be towing in 8th gear (which is an OD gear) to deliver approximately the same engine rpm and torque. Here's the data I am basing that on:
      3.73 FD = 3.73 7th @ 60mph 2268rpm 70mph 2646rpm
      4.30 FD = 3.66 8th @ 60mph 2225rpm 70mph 2595rpm (7th@60mph 2614rpm 7th@70mph 3050rpm)
If you were to drop to 6th gear with the 3.73 gears for an incline, in my mind I'm thinking its possible a truck with 4.30 gears would have to use 6th as well to meet or exceed the level of torque provided with the 3.73 gears.
      3.73 FD= 4.76 6th @ 60mph 2896rpm 70mph 3378rpm
      4.30 FD= 4.30 7th @ 60mph 2614rpm 70mph 3050rpm (6th@60mph 3338rpm 6th@70mph 3895rpm)
So if it is the potential "stress" that is the concern, if you are towing in 7th (which is 1:1) and someone with 4.30 gears is towing in 8th (which is an OD), in my non-expert opinion, I'm thinking that the drive train using an overdrive gear is experiencing a higher degree of "stress" versus the drive train using 1:1.
Once again, I'm just an amateur at this, so if I am off-base I'm sure someone will point out my error. But this is how I see it at the moment in the specific example you gave.

I went from a 2008 Chevy Duramax to a 2022 Ford F350 7.3 with a 3.73 rear gears, and could not be more pleased. Originally I was looking at a F250, but in 2022 they only offered either a 4.30 or 3.55 rear end, but a F350 came standard with a 3.73. I use my truck to commute to work and pull a ~11K fifth wheel, it works great. The gas option also gives me almost twice the payload.

      @fuzzywigglebutt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

How do you get twice the payload? The 2024 F250 diesel (Tremor package) I was looking at had a payload of 2900+. I am not believing any F250 even 7.3 gas XL with no options is going to double that 2900+ payload. That would be more than a F350 dually.

Your experience is right in line with mine. My F250 was ordered by me, Feb of 22 recieved in April of 22. Sitting at 26000 roughly with a lifetime computer average on trip 2 of 11.6 mpg, trip 2 has not been reset since i recieved the truck with 3 miles on it so this is combined towing and highway milage. 7.3 with 4.30 gears 275 75 R20 (stock 34" michelin) I get 14-14.5 mpgs empty running 75-80 here in New Mexico, drop to 65-70 and it will get 14.5-15. Rpms with current tires 75mph is 2100 rpm . We pull a 34ft 5th at 10300 and add a Polaris Rzr on a single axle trailer about 1/2 the time we tow. I tow with all 10 gears available but remove 8-10 manually when approaching a big grade, 7th gear will pull most hills 6th with 4.30 gears is the sweet spot for most big grades. 6th puts me at 4000Rpms , peak torque is 4500. 65-70 towing yeilds 8 -9 mpg depending on wind and mountains. Worst was 6.5 into a 30mph head wind and gusts holding 70mph, this was a double tow with the sxs behind the 5th wheel.

It's good to hear from someone from NM also. I just returned to Albuquerque following a 3,300-mile trip to WA pulling a 7,000# loaded enclosed snowmobile trailer (with a RZR and other toys) and a 4,000# overhead camper in my current 2016 F350 dually 6.7 PS. We're towing similar loads. I averaged 9.8 mpg; and I stayed in the (bumpy) right lane all the way, as I was going 5 to mph below the speed limit. My partially deleted diesel (exhaust) almost left me stranded; and I was fortunate to get home. I've spent the past few days looking for a SRW 7.3 that will handle the 4,000#+ payload that I need for the truck camper / trailer combination I infrequently haul. There is only one 7.3 truck in all of Alb. worth looking at now; and the wait for a new ordered one is probably six months. I found a used one in another state that has everything I want (plus more), but my only reservation is that it has a 4.30 rear end. Your comments; and this video, have make me pull the trigger on buying this used (30,000 mile) 2022 F350 with a 7.3L godzilla engine. I've owned three Ford diesels over the past 30 years, and they have given me troubles. My old 2002 V-10 never gave me any troubles, but it didn't pull the mountains as good as the diesels have. We'll see how the 7.3 pulls the northern NM mountains, but I'm not in a hurry anyways. The 4.30 is needed here more than in Michigan and back east anyways. I appreciate the video, and of the comments herein.

@@SliderFury1 don’t stress about not having the 4:30’s. The 10 speed trans is a game changer. I looked up all the gear ratios of the 10 speed and compared them to the gears in my old Dodge. 1st and 2nd gear are lower than first was in the Dodge. So when I get to 3rd I’m in a gear equivalent to the old Dodge 1st gear. The 4:30 will give more grunt off the line but it also shortens the time you are in each gear. Once you’re rolling on the highway with the weight you are talking about towing, the biggest difference is what gear you’ll run at your cruising speed. If you think about for years they told us not to pull in overdrive. These trucks have 3 overdrives. A 4:30 will have you pulling in 9th and 10th. The 3:73 you’ll be in 7th and 8th. The 3:73 is a perfect gear for towing occasionally but still offers good drive ability and keeps the RPM’s lower at highway speeds. Enjoy that new truck!! Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

There are days I wish I had them just because but I certainly do not need them. If you think about it, the tires and wheel sizes have gotten a lot larger than they used to be. In 1992 a 1/2 ton Chevy had a 15 inch wheel that truck today has a 17, 18 or 20 inch wheel. Granted they might have a shorter sidewall but in general they are bigger around than they used to be. I figured if a modified 1997 7.3 diesel with 4.10is good enough then a 7.3 gas with 4.30s and a way better transmission has got to be as good or better doing the same things.
Rumor is there’s a High Output version of the gas 7.3L coming.

@@robertl9065 I had not heard about the high output 7.3 but it does not surprise me. Reports are the stock internals on the 7.3 can handle up to 1,000 HP. You will most definitely want the 4:30 gears for your application. The Ford towing chart says 3:73 gears are good up to 16,000 lbs. anything around 16k and up to 19k you better have the 4:30. If pulling a good neck the 4:30 is good up to 20k 5th wheel limited to 19k due to the 5th wheel hitch and attachment of it to the truck. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

Normally Empty 90% of the time and towing 10% of the time. I live in the South East and the areas i routinely go is within Texas to Florida so makes sense for me to go with gas. About gas stations - this is odd - I find the ones off the interstate don't fit all that well in, however if i scoot into town i can always find a gas station with a better pump arrangement. Average trips from the Dublin area to Hilton Head if I stay on back roads and keep speed less than 63mph I get about 16.5 ish. That’s with some stop and go through towns and going onto HHI. If I take the interstate most of the way and keep to 73mph it’s about 16.0. I towed a 7600 lb Airstream from GA to San Diego and back and to Denver and back. I typically don’t lock out 10th unless it’s hunting and just let the transmission do its thing. The Airstream is better than most trailers aerodynamically. There were stretches on I-8 west of Phoenix I saw 12 mpg. But outside temps were over 100 that day and there was no significant wind. A couple of days earlier on that same trip I was fighting very strong headwinds and felt lucky to see 7 mpg. I found outside temperatures make a big difference in fuel mileage. Colder more dense air increases drag more than you’d think. My Hilton head trips are about 1.5 to 2 miles per gallon worse when temperatures are in the 40s or low 50s. Lower than that when it’s raining.
