Clarus mentioning that Grogu is a "passive Jedi" is on point with his character development, back then he almost choked out Cara Dune and he slammed Gideon's men against one another while being held captive. Now he seems to dislike violence, he broke up the fight between Axe and Paz, he only disarmed the commando that was choking Din Djarin, he didn't actually try to fight back against the Praetorian guards. He clearly learned restraint from Luke

I actually really love that Gideon actually wins the fight against Din and then against Bo and it’s only when Ax crashes a ship into him that he loses. The image of Gideon burning on his own while Din, Bo and Grogu survive by shielding each other is such good imagery and really nails home the theme of the season, Mandalorians are strongest together

Also a fair bit of irony in him saying Mandalorians are nothing without their trinkets when the only reason he beat either Din or Bo is his Beskar Power Armour. Bo was clearly the better fighter in their battle, it was just that she couldn't overpower him and the Darksaber couldn't cut through his armour.

Alright, I've got to say it: given the tech at play, Axe reaching the Light Cruiser is entirely possible, for a couple of reasons. When the Covert was trying to track the dragon, we can tell the went a massive distance because of the change in time, so very likely dozens, if not a hundred miles or more.
Whereas the Mandalorian fleet is in atmosphere: they're barely above the storm clouds, which because they're dense means they are closer to the surface (relatively speaking), and we can see from the hangar bay Axe flies into that there's only a slight curve to the horizon, further denoting how close the fleet is to the ground.
Now the kicker: Low Earth Orbit is only 1200 miles, and the Space Shuttle used to fly at 100 miles, and Earth's Stratosphere goes from about 4 miles above the Earth's surface to roughly 31 miles, with the Troposphere (the place where most clouds are) topping-out at about that 4 mile mark.
Our modern rockets use massive engines not for the distance they need to travel, but because they're trying to get something stupidly heavy into LEO or beyond, which includes the weight problem: the heavier something is, the more fuel you have to burn to lift it, but that means you also have to lift that fuel...it gets very quickly to the point that you can't lift a rocket anymore because there's too much fuel. Diminishing returns due to gravity is a b*tch.
Our larger rockets are also either including fuel for the return trip, or are trying to get something to another part of the Solar System, which is mind-numbingly far.
One Mando, with more advanced tech than us, trying to make a probable one-way trip is going to be able to make that flight to the Light Cruiser with ease. Like, an X-Wing has enough fuel to cross a massive system and engage in dog fights *and* can make hyperspace jumps, and they're not even the size of a bus.

Night Owls have more modern armor which allows they to go into space and fly longer. Remember when armor told Bo she couldn’t make her piece to match her modern night owl one. Children of the Watch armor is not as modern and is more limited in such matters

    • @jacksonjames2489
      @jacksonjames2489 ปีที่แล้ว +5

See, I'm with ya on this. I figure Bo, being royalty, and her squad would have top of the line equipment, more contemporary Mandos would have more advanced -- more 'fuel efficient' -- equipment, and The Children are basically a bunch of rag-tag stragglers who can barely hold their shit together. (Same thing with Koska holding her own against Boba last season. I didn't get the frustration. Koska's practically Royal Guard; wouldn't she be top of the top in combat if she's that close to the last of the royal line?) Like ya point out, The Armorer even says to Bo that she can't make a pauldron with 'the modern refinements.' I like to think of Paz running out of gas as foreshadowing his heavy blaster overheating later. Makes sense to me, but I think they coulda put an explicit line in somewhere to confirm it. That, and I haven't heard anyone mention that Sabine and Fenn Rau's squad all fly in space to take out the Interceptor, don't they?
I sometimes don't get this fetish for nit-picking every little thing that could be a plot-hole and then shitting on the product because of it. Finding problems with the details is one of my favorite parts of SW cuz it lets my imagination wander in trying to come up with possible explanations.

Best part of this episode was the Armorer being as subtle as her forge hammer to the face about Grogu's parents. Like "Gee, we dont know where his parents are, do we Dinn? If only we did, Grogu could be an apprentice! Hmmmm..."

She doesn't flat out tell anyone what to do. When Din admitted he had removed his helmet She did tell him how to redeem himself but it was no longer possible, wink wink. She knew what he would find on Mandalore. She didn't fully believe Bo Katan when she said she saw a Mythasore, but, she could sense the truth in her words. So a subtle prod to Din about Grogu's family was the push he needed to move in the proper direction. She sees something in Grogu's future and knows he is needed with the Mandalorians. I can see Grogu in the future as a full fledged Mandalorian with a light saber in his future.

For what it’s worth, the “the spies” episode title (which threw lots of us off) turned out to just be a biblical reference, not a traitor with the mandos. Moses in the Bible sent 12 “spies” (old parlance for “scouts,” one from each tribe) ahead to scout Canaan for the Israelites to make sure it was habitable. In the 7th episode of this season, Bo plus 11 other Mandalorians (12 total) went ahead to scout Mandalore, and Bo went to pains to emphasize that the volunteers needed to be from both tribes. I was thrown off by this allegory too, as someone who left their Catholic upbringing behind more than twenty years ago, but once I heard this a lightbulb went off and I thought it was actually a pretty cool application of biblical allegory (which I usually hate).

I believe the title "The Spies" is actually references to the old testament where in which the Jews sending spies (in Hebrew) to ancient Israel so they will research the land and find if and where they can actually live there and what are the threats awaiting for them, which is pretty similar to most of the plot of this episode

One thing worth mentioning with the Jetpack Fuel, is that we don't know how long that chase was after the dinosaur in Ep. 3, it was daylight when they started the chase, but nearing sunset when they run out of fuel and Bo's ship passes them, so it could have been hours worth of fuel used before they ran out.

Book 1 of the Mandalorian has ended. This was the first happy ending to the season ending episode. I think next season will begin with Chapter 1 again. That is when I believe they will loosely throw in Thrawn plot parts. If not in the next book, then the one after, depending on how far out the Disney timetable is for Dave Filoni's Disney+ TV show feature film.

  • @surlycanadian
    @surlycanadian ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mando jet packs suck in and filter oxygen and pressurize that for fuel. It burns faster during flight than it refuels, so they would have to land eventually and then within 20 minutes it’s fully fuelled again, ready to go again. Mandalores atmosphere is a bit smaller than ours, so it’s less than five miles from the surface to orbit.
I made all of that up, but that’s how easy it is to NOT sweat the small stuff with regards to how unspecified superior technology works.
What is harder to explain is the psychic link(?) to their jet packs, since they are performing intense aerodynamic maneuvers, changing thrust levels and direction while dual-wielding weapons and therefore really have no physical control system like a joystick.

The covert may have had fuel issues and only fuelled them partially. Also because it was an actual combat mission they might have fuelled them up more than usual and maybe have access to higher efficient fuel from the privateers. Also the covert might have had older lower tech models (could be assumed because the armorer said she could replace Bo's pauldron but not with one as modern as the one she lost)

I think Grogu is going to reforge the dark saber: he’s a parallel to Tar Vinzla (a force using mandalorian) and he’s already started the binding process with the mythosaur. Jedis make light sabers, and although he’s not a Jedi he’s punching the tickets for it. Also: they didn’t introduce huyang for no reason-I bet he’s part of the process

About the droid question, in Star Wars droids can be sentient but not of them are fully. The ones that they are are called independent droids and are technically illegal to let run around and are considered dangerous. This is why the tone on the subject is all over the place. Astromechs in the R series are more often independent droids due to some production choices in their programing but they go unnoticed because they beep and boop.

Jetpack fuel limitations suspended for the grande finale. Even if he could reach orbit, re-entry without a ship would still be fatal. The jet-troopers are not clones, different voices. The darksaber was forged by the only mandalorian jedi to ever exist, and Grogu doesn't know how to make even a normal lightsaber. The chances of anyone ever making a new one are extremely remote.

They definitely played it safe with this season.
Nothing we've seen here was somehting we haven't seen before. It was reallly kind of a All Star Wars check box (corridor fight with Phantom menace shields doors, fight on a bridge/launch platform, some red buffoons being effortlessly toyed around by a Force user, making their dramatic introduction from last week all the more... irrelevant, Grogu Force shielding them from the fire.... The only really cool thing about this episode was the aerial fight on jetpacks ! That was fresh !
The epilogue was nice, but felt very rushed (you can clearly see the 30+ minutes format hurting them, here)...
If it was a standalone season, I'd say it was a satisfying end.
But it's the end of 4 years of buildup since the formidable dramatic crescendos of season 1 and 2 (and no, I don't count Boba Fett). And I can't help but feel it was severely lackluster.
How on earth (or on Mandalore) did Moff Gideon, constantly shown as the smartest guy in the room, and as we 've seen with the shadow council, not exactly a team player, how could he think that he could order around his force sensitive clones, while he himself doesn't have it ? If anything, the first thing they'd do is to get rid of him, since he'd be the weakest one of the bunch, and then either go on to compete with each other for supremacy, or actually work together on a council of Kang style (which, admittedly, could have been very cool in Star Wars, giving us the threatening Kang that the MCU couldn't). His plan was just stupid all along, and I feel like a fool, robbed of my time for having followed his misdeeds for over 4 years !
Anyway, I'm pretty miffed by this finale. It was not as terrible as I anticipated (I was a staunch believer that Din wouldn't make it), but I'm not sure it was actually much better...
I guess not subverting any expectations is the new "subverted your expectations, b**ches ???"
What strange times we're living in...
Oh well, now that we can forget this once beloved show, I'm actually VERY MUCH looking forward to Visions vol.2, coming in May the 4th !
Working myself in the animation industry, I know at least half of the studios involved this time, and I can only tell you one thing : You guys are not ready !
These studios are the creme de la creme of the animation industry, outside of Japan.
    - UK's legendary Studio Aardman, who gave us the legendary Wallace and Gromit saga, and Shaun the Sheep
    - Ireland's Cartoon Saloon, which made the formidable Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, and Wolfwalker, all of them Oscars nominated, btw
    - S/Korea Studio Mir : just the studio that brought to you all the animations from Avatar the Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, excuse my french...
    - Talking about France, Studio La Cachette. You might not know them yet, but they're well on their way to become France's studio Ghibli.
Can't wait for Vol.2 to drop ! As well as all our jaws, in the process !
Regardless of what I thought of the finale, I love you 2 reactions ! You guys are by far one of the cutest couple on youtube, and it's always a delight to watch your reactions !
Wish you to keep it up for a long time ! And see you soon at Visions Vol.2 !

Actually it makes sense that the Children of the Watch have much more limited fuel on their jetpacks. They were living on an out of the way world with few resources and no re-fining infrastructure to produce fuel. They likely ration their fuel reserves carefully giving them a short flight range. However the NightOwls had access to a lot more technology and resources and so could use or develop more efficent, longer lasting, more powerful jetpacks than their hidden kin can. I admit going from the surface to orbit is a tall order, but there is some justification.

I feel that Moff Gideon's armor is exactly what I would expect from a combination Mandalorian fanboy and Darth Vader fanboy on a power/ego trip. He basically wanted Mandalorian Darth Vader armor that was also a powered battlesuit. What else would it look like, given what we have known of Gideon from his first onscreen appearance. The man is and always has been Extra AF...Vader himself would have advised Gideon to ease up on the drama, which is saying something.

On the interconnections, I completely agree with Clarus. This show could have been significantly streamlined, and that things like the Amnesty program were not very satisfying fleshed out.
At the same time, neither was the legacy of conflict between Death Watch and homeworld Mandalorians. It was not a source of meaningful drama, nor did we see any of them grapple with it in a way that demonstrated character growth. Like the Amnesty program, it may as well not have been a problem to begin with.
Basically, I felt no real stakes here. In contrast, Bo's scenes, like Crosshair's in Bad Batch, were my favorites because I could feel her complexity -- but they were the exception. If instead they only zoomed in on the Mandalorians and gave the other characters room to breathe and for us to see authentic conflict and growth, then that would have been much more satisfying.

My word of choice for the episode was "funderwhelming". Like, I had a blast watching it, but at the end I felt just kind of...fine. satisfied, but not excited (or devastated. Still recovering from Tech. I think I like it when Star Wars hurts me. 😜). A lot of "Yes!" moments, but not much in the way of "FUCK YEAH!"s or ""OH NO!"s. For a season that felt very varied, subversive, and bold, this felt very safe. With a lot of offers left surprisingly unfulfilled or wiped away a bit too quickly. That said, what it DID do, it did VERY well! I think I'd have enjoyed it more if I'd seen last week and this back to back. And so I'll probably have a better time with it on future rewatches. I just hope the commute between Navarro and Mandalore isn't too bad cuz I don't want to break up the Din boys from Mama Mando Bo for too long. 😍

Literally *e v e r y t h i n g* in this universe is whatever it needs to be for what the narrative requires. The ships, the technology, the jet pack limitations, the weapons, the science, the creatures, the droids. Even the planets and cultures to a certain degree. The Force itself was always a means of servicing and advancing the story, and that was according to its creator. There is definitely a way of making that formula continue to work in Star Wars to this day, it's just not going to be for everyone. And that's perfectly fine.
I personally have been pretty tuned out of this whole season ever since the opening chapter failed to set down any meaningful kind of hook for me. I could see right away, yup the focus here is squarely on taking back Mandalore and the two bucketheads on opposing ends (Din n' Bo) coming to terms by the end of it. Cool. Just not for me. As always, there were some cool bits and moments between the filler ("Guns For Hire" surprisingly ended up being my favorite outing overall). My one question was could they make me care about Mandalore by the end of the season? They did not. Whatever is in store for the fourth season, for me it is squarely in the toss box alongside Ahsoka's series, "Skeleton Crew," and whatever Filoni baloney his movie ends up being.

yeah im with Clarus on the dark saber. I think its gone now. the thing was basically cursed anyway.. and it is a new era and a rebirth for the mandalorians.. they are already coexisting (so far) and Bo seems to still be the leader with it at least broken. I think if they can get around all the rest of the divisions then they can move past it.
The wipe at the end also give me the impression that this overarching chapter is now done. Din and Grogu are a family, mandalor has been taken back and they are now together. I think Asohka takes over now. and these folks might come in now and then.. and if there is season 4 of Mandalorian it will now go back to the quest of the week thing as he takes grogu on his adventures and trains him,

Rushed, choppy editing for the finale. Disappointing as the season on the whole, which surprised me given I was hoping for focus on the Mandalorians.
Gotta love the jetpack consistency. /sarcasm off Everyone runs out of fuel chasing the 'bird' but they can fly and fly for hours here, and even break orbit with one.
Really think future stories could have been more interesting if he WOULD HAVE completed some of his new force clones. Oh that reminds me, why would they grow them to his current age? That's what it looked like at least to me. Seems like they didn't even bother to try to de-age his appearance on them.
Have a bunch more just minor nitpicks with the episode. Like the amazing imperial sensors tracking Mando and grogu we've never seen before. Or that the Drop Ships and imperial craft crossed pretty much the exact point and didn't collide.
Season as a whole just seems as sloppily managed as Boba Fett was.

That's my sense as well. The light cruiser looks like it's in what appears to be Mandalore's stratosphere, so within the realm of possibility depending on the established range of the jetpacks. But there's a generous dose of "Star Wars Physics" going on as well.

The speculation is that "The Spies" is reference to Numbers 13: "Moses Sends out 12 Spies" "The Lord said to Moses, Send men to explore Canaan, which I’m giving to the Israelites. Send one leader from each of their ancestors’ tribes." and that the spies were the 12 Mandalorians that went to Mandalore (AKA Canaan)

One small plot hole that I can’t figure out, what the hell was Gideon doing after Din broke free? He left to go take care of Din, he had a map with Din’s location, he left his clones unprotected, he let din take care of his guards in the hallway two at a time. So what was he doing? If I had a Mandalorian coming for me, I would not let him destroy everything I worked for without sending everything I had at him. He would have faced Din sooner if he just stayed in the map room.

It was a very divisive season. Some people loved it. Some people hated it. Personally... I thought it was good. I enjoyed it and it let me know that even the worst season of Mando was better than any other SW show so far (In my opinion). I was no where near as amazing or grand as the previous season finales but it also didn't really do anything wrong. It felt very safe and I weirdly am happy about that. Sue the Armorer could have been a spy or Din could have died. The mythosaur could have risen up and saved the day or Boba Fett could have flown in with Slave I and saved Kosca... but in 45 minutes that would have taken away from wrapping up the story and I get not including those things.

How did Gideon crushed the Darksaber? Didn't the hilt made from beskar?
Not that I'm complaning that it is destroy. I always feel that the Darksaber is a weird thing as a symbol of rulership. By having to won it by combat, it means that whoever rule Mandalore is a great fighter, not a great ruler. In the first place, Sabine didn't won it by combat against Maul, so it became Bo's and Gideon's then Din's (and later Bo's again) is not legitimate.
By that logic, Obi-wan who killed Maul is the next wielder, then Vader who killed Obi-wan. And then Luke who won against his father.
If the Darksaber ever get reforge, it should become a symbol of a general or something along those line, not a Mand'alor.

    • @kivimik
      @kivimik ปีที่แล้ว +1

Consider that Gideon's gloved hand was also likely made of beskar and powered as well. It might provide enough force to crush it. I do agree that the darksaber was divisive despite it's apparent symbol of unification. There's way too much baggage associated with it. New traditions need to be made for Mandalore to move forward.

I believe Gideon is truly dead and all clones of his are dead as even if 1 survives Once THrawn returns in Ahsoka, Thrawn will kill him for keeping the clone equipment for himself to make his own clones instead of using it for the emperor and trying to oppose Thrawn. As far as the dark saber THat is also dead for good, I think what is going to keep loyalty is I believe Grogu eventually is going to tame the mythasaur either for his own benefit or for Bo Ketan, but if they do want to rebuild the dark saber, at the end of the Ahsoka they show the droid that builds lightsabers in the Clone wars.

Totally agree with Clarus about some of the storylines seeming weird. Some of them could have been either Season 4 or another series/movie. I liked the season overall but this was an amazing season finale. This episode ties up enough plots that it can serve as a point to switch up the series as a whole, such as a time skip and we come back with Grogu either speaking or his abilities more trained. Also until I get in-universe confirmation of Gideon's death (or an official announcement) then I'm assuming he survived....Anakin survived worse

From what I've heard, the whole thing in Book of Boba Fett where Din got Grogu back was originally supposed to be a big part of Mandalorian S3, but the studio fucked with it. That left the writers a need to write in filler episodes like Dr. Pershing and the whole cameo-fest that was episode 6. Even the "pirates attack Navarro" episode felt like mostly bullshit with some plot progress at the end.
This did feel like a potential series end, but I can't imagine that Disney is willing to give up the opportunity to sell more Grogu merch, so I'm sure there will be a season 4.
After my Armorer theory didn't pan out AT ALL, I think I'm with Xander in that the whole Shadow Council was meant to be "The Spies".
I think the destruction of the Dark Saber is a good thing. Removes the need for Mandalorian society to be full of grasping combative assholes always plotting a way to simply win leadership through strength of arms. If Bo and the Armorer (and Axe, I suppose) can forge (pun intended) a strong triumvirate of leadership and unity with Bo at the head, I think Mandalore is in for a prosperous new era.

Sadly, John and Dave have caught a case of "HBO writing syndrome: HBOWS". Threading bullshit titles and killing off well developed characters to make you think the plot line is really thick. But then upon the ending, the plot was actually as thin as water. But, did anyone else notice the facial expression of the Moff clone when his eyes opened? Very similar to the expressions of the Moff "boss" in the end fight yes? Maybe, Moff activated and suited up one clone for a test and then he fled the planet. What if that end fight was actually one of his clones? I did notice a lack of expression and personality.🤔
