    Solid info, Plukky! I agree whole heatedly regarding the toughness of aluminum. Ive done some wild stuff with it in the aviation world. Composites are cool too, but for other reasons. Every material has strengths and weaknesses.

    Different owners, different boat specs. Bobby just needs a platform to photograph his buxom beauties. Delos is willing to compromise for safety and family friendliness. LaVagabond insisted on a beautiful and exotic race boat that will be insufferable as a family bluewater cruiser.

      It is wrong to say Delos compromised for safety....yes for family friendliness but not for safety...the safety of a cat is its ability to cover ocean passages faster and if weather is threatening then to get out of the way...this is directly related to the weight of the vessel

    • @WAZZUjohn03
      @WAZZUjohn03 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@SAILINGintoFREEDOM good point. I will conceed that safety was not the best choice of words. I guess I don't have a great term to describe the compromise that is necessary to achieve something that is going to have the creature comforts that you desire, but be durable enough to withstand the inevitable challenges and be repairable by a competent crew so you will not be stranded.

    I love it... Peter tell us how you really feel about big fiberglass catamarans 😮

  • @JagLite
    @JagLite หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    There aren't more aluminum cats because they are extremely labor intensive requiring highly skilled sheet aluminum metal workers and welders. Glass boats are made with low skilled workers using molds and can be built much, much faster than any other material. It takes time to build the plug that a glass mold is pulled from but from then on the shell of a glass cat can be made in a few days, not a few months that an aluminum shell takes. And that equals money. Building an aluminum boat where you are makes it much faster (all those skilled builders!) and the wages are much lower so it can be built for a lower cost than elsewhere but it still takes many times the man hours to complete. Keeping in mind that the shell is not even half the construction time and money of the fully completed and outfitted boat, it is easy to understand why there aren't more aluminum boats.
    It seems that the majority of the cats are designed for the charter market and not for world cruising anyway.
    Sailing houseboats? Houseboats with sails? Condomarans? Most are party boats not cruising boats.

    I raised an eyebrow when the doctors showed the alleged polars for the Portofino and largely follow their journey to see how it pans out. By contrast, I would have expected with the performance orientation of the Odysea its polars would look more impressive. So part of following you is to see how that works out. Also, how the aluminium works out. There is obvious advantages. I wonder what tradeoffs if any rear their heads in operation.

    So, as a complete layperson, genuine question here... why, when calculating the Sail Area is only the foretriangle considered instead of the full area of the all the sails in front of the mast? What if it is a cutter? What is there is a bowsprit? Do those increase the sail area? I'm trying to understand this so I'm better informed when I do eventually buy a boat. In this question I've assumed some stuff that may be wrong, please don't hesitate to correct those assumptions.

    One thing you missed is lite wind performance, as sailing in 4-6 knots of wind is possible with a light aluminum catamaran. Here in NZ new rules stop anything oner 15m in length using a mooring buoy is this becoming worldwide, if so that would be a consideration to stay under 15M

      @daveamies5031 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not ridiculous, just a motor boat with a mast and sail, there's probably some jurisdiction where it makes sense or is tax advantageous otherwise they wouldn't make them, I've seen 40-60ft mono-hulls that have the old motor boat hull form and then a short mast and a small furling head sail and a main sail that's so small it looks like they cut the bottom 1/3 off a hobie cat's sail.
      Putting a sail on a motor boat doesn't make a sailing boat, but maybe it helps reduce fuel consumption when motoring down wind?

    The HH 44 can get close to wind speed. If I remember right they were doing 10 knots in 12 knot winds with no help from current. That is with a 125% front sale. I bet if tweaked (wind angle and sail angle) it could have got 11 knots. So for a non dagger board cat its pretty good. IT is also geared more towards comfort and I think it's a good boat. Also they are not speed chasers.
    Doodles as they turned off engine yes the engine was pushing them hit 6 knots in 13.8 knots wind. That number was going down also. So yes it is a tank in the water. I do not trust those lithium Ion batteries it has on it. I would not feel safe on that boat. adding 600 lbs. they could have went with LFP batteries and been safe. It is a tank so who cares about 600 lbs.
    Portofino is gonna be a cruising cat. Do you see what they will have for a boat? Amazing cat. This should be just as fast if not faster than the HH44 and can be beached, go into places most cats can not. I really love this cat.
    Delos they are also coming from a tank of a boat to a mid level performance cat. I say mid level because its not a racer and its not a tank. They will be more than happy with it's performance.
    Freedom I think you gonna miss some of the comforts you will be skimping on to save weight. If you load up your cat like the others do you would be slower also.

    Fibreglass isn't still decent in terms of impact resistance. Elongation at break is 4%, vs 16% for 6061, and obviously it's 10 times stronger albeit unidirectionally. Additionally that 4% is pure yield whereas 6061 only has ~2% before you're into the plastic region.
    I think the issue is builders skimp on the layers these days. Also maybe delamination is the bottleneck here.

    Aluminum....boats wanting to go the the poles should be made of it as you are likely to hit something (ice) in the water. Other areas, fiberglass is strong enough. What fiberglass isn't is loud and hot like Aluminum. That is what those who want to sail in the tropics tend to sail fiberglass boats.
    You don't measure a boat's sea-worthiness by crashing it into something hard. With that said, I once crashed a fiberglass 30' old C&C head on into a very large, heavy, metal sea buoy going 8 knots (3 knots of current). The only damage was the bow fiberglass was dented in about 2 feet above the water line. I couldn't even see daylight from the inside so not even sure if it would leak. The dent was 1 inch tall and 1.5 inches long and 1/4" deep.
    So don't go telling me fiberglass isn't strong.

    • @SAILINGintoFREEDOM

      Cats are almost all cored construction, your boat was likely 30 to 35mm of solid fiberglass with it likely to be about 60mm and sometimes more at the bow. That is strong but cats are not built like that...too heavy. Look at the context

    Another lure of the huge floating houses is that they can be tempting to live very unhealthy and sedentary lives, often at an older age when one should be more active. I advise installing a small gym in one area to maintain fitness and live longer. Just my2c. Cheers.

      @@peterhancox5268 Hi Peter, Plukky has been sharing his experience and thought process over many years, so his analysis has been accumulative and incremental. If you had been following this channel, and many others with all their collective knowledge, you'd come to the same conclusion, although probably without the colourful language. His "direct" observation is not a surprise to the many regular viewers. And these many regular viewers no doubt, if they had a choice, would prefer to be on the Doodles boat, if the context was in a safe harbour or coastal bay, as it is far more comfortable, but would elect one of aluminium boats for a blue ocean crossing. :o)

    I've been subscribed to Doodles for yrs, but I hardly seen any of his videos, maybe just to check up on his latest t..tie conquest (the vids were fun when Meghan and Taylor were around). However, I was looking forward to his newest (and final?) boat, that cat made especially for him in Asia. But when he showed it a couple of weeks ago I was shocked to the extent my mouth dropped and I wanted to cry (for him). What a disaster of a boat. A Spirito sin Santos? It may be comfortable and spacious at anchor in some secluded bay or at a fancy marina, but how will the boat get there, and who will pay for the fees? The boat can certainly not sail there on its own.
    Nope, that channel is (and have always been) just bikinis/t..ties/iced beer/martinis and NOT anything about true sailing/underwater exploration/building and maintaining a boat/developing any sort of maritime skills, etc.
    Maybe I should charge Bobby for ME to watch his videos.

    Well here is the difference between plastics and metal. Steel Aluminum flex differently to plastic The paints protect steel from weather and water but rust or corrosion still happens plastic no worries but the sun and cold affects all types of Plastics plastics get Brittle and degrade cracking but underneath it flexes badly. Carbon fiber is known for having issues if water gets inside before it is set also if parts crack and water gets in that is a huge issue a like de laminating. Another problem with Carbon fiber is how many times it is flexed weakens the inside out so in a mast you will not notice until it snaps. With steel or aluminum you can notice it and do something about it. Also plastics Fiberglass Carbon fiber poly-carbon they can not be reused recycled the only way to get rid of them in burn them or land fill as they do not dissolve. I wonder if can talk with Captain Rick Moore about electronics on boats things like that to what you may have as that would be interesting as he is into that sort of thing more than others are such a nice man may give you pointers.

      Captain Rik is not what he seems. He ripped off my buddy to the tune of $5000 on Battleborne batteries that he knowingly destroyed and was warned by Battleborne not to sell but he did anyway to my friend (who was actually his friend at the time)...he also got warranty on it so made $5000 from his own mistake and ripped off a friend of his... If I had the time I would do an episode on it...tell him the episode is coming...I may just find the time
