Sitting down for brief periods can help us recover from stress or recuperate from exercise. But nowadays, our lifestyles make us sit much more than we move around. Are our bodies built for such a sedentary existence? Murat Dalkilinç investigates the hidden risks of sitting down.
Lesson by Murat Dalkilinç, animation by Oxbow Creative.
I feel bad for the animators who had to sit there and illustrate what this job is doing to them.

As someone with ADHD, it's incredibly validating to hear/know that part of the problem is not with me; it's with the way our society is structured-- humans just aren't built to sit still for long periods of time.
aye ayudenlo pls
Humans are built to adapt. We can live in society, or we can risk our lives in the wild, either way has its advantage and disadvantage, but the advantages of the former outways the latter far more.
@@winzyl9546 doesn't mean we can't change things around us
We are not built to constantly work standing all day for 10 hours non stop with two 30 minute breaks either.
@@winzyl9546 This video is literally saying our bodies can't adapt to this lifestyle change, and the science backs it up. The only way to adapt is for society to change.
My family often scold me for moving around too much even though "i'm not doing anything." But actually, when I move around too much, it's those times I think too deeply.

I was so gutted that I only found out about this last month. This is one of those things where, if you exercise regularly, you're lured into the false sense of security by thinking your health is fine, but that alone can't counteract hours of pressure on your spine, vital organs, etc. You HAVE to MOVE. I will share that, after just one week of cutting back my sedentary hours to less than four a day, my poor circulation has improved dramatically, I've lost nine pounds in a month and an inch of my waist (excellent when you're 40! I'm telling you), and I have no back pain any more. 🙂

Wait a minute I did the same thing today and that’s not something I usually watch… are you stalking me or am I stalking you? Lol
Makes a video on why stress is bad for you
lol xD
I liked the video how it explained. I've been spending my time sitting down and doing computer-based tasks for hours. It is really bad for our health. The world is driving us to more passive life. For instance, in the past when someone wanted to get a food, they would just go to the shop, walk around a bit, buy the food and return. However, in today's world, the technological advancements allow us to order food from home via our phones. Another example is that kids before the invention of cellphones, used to play outside games, hangout with friends to ride a bicycle and etc. Sadly, today's generation is in a period that they would not even want to go out to play physically due to the availability of smartphones and the internet. All in all, it was a great video with illustrations and thank you for reminding me to sit properly and walk around a bit.
This is such a wonderful video! My child complained about numbness. I recommended she move around since she'd been online sitting for several hours. After walking for a while, she reported the numbness had gone away. Ah ha! What a great confirmation!
This really sucks when you’re into lockdown, because of the virus, and have a lot of work to do on your computer 😔

for students here commenting that sitting down to study: use the pomodoro technique. 25 minutes of studying and 5 minutes of break. you can always flex yourself in the 5 minutes that are meant for break. Also one can exercise after studying if time permits,
You're talking like u never took a class
What about school though? Not online school
Sitting is really bad, not counting the reduction in bone density and in the way to osteoporosis.
Unfortunately countless studies show that exercise after sitting doesn't really change deteriorating effects. It's something that you came up by thinking about it briefly and it sounds like it helps but in real life it doesn't. It also shows how just thinking that you know a solution really doesn't mean that you have it.
@@raspas99 to better clarify a possible misunderstanding: the studies you are referring are surely applicable to "going to the gym after 8 hrs of work spent sitting". This should be not the case. Alternating brief sitting sessions with frequent movements / standing ups it's another story overall and there is plenty of evidence this counteracts sedentary behavior outcomes.

Well as a student that's kind of a problem, I sit 6 hours in school and then another 3 preparing for the next days class

Be careful, sitting is the whole reason I've had problems with my back. I'm a student, I'm young, fit and healthy, and I slipped a disc in my spine from sitting too much whilst studying last year, and ever since I've been in pain nearly every day. I was incapacitated for weeks, and since then I've had to spend hundred of $$$ on seeing my physiotherapist, a lot of time doing strengthening exercises and swimming, and minimizing my time sitting. As a result I've had to completely change my life style and the way I spend time. As I type this I'm laying on my yoga mat at home, keeping my spine in good posture and taking the weight off it. Its getting better though, finally. It is WORTH it to take breaks from sitting. It got to the point for me where I would have to sit up the back of class and stand up because I would be in so much pain.
I advise frequent and intense fidgeting. With luck, it will get you expelled.
Peter Cohen I'm not sure if that's what I want :)

The solution is a lot simplier: WORK STANDING!!!
Standing is much worse at least for me than sittings. Walking is the best option but I haven't figured out how to do that in open office with whole computer + monitor set up.
I occasionally jump around when I get excited. If only a little, then I stand with feet walking in the same spot. This holds especially true when I'm doing group projects as I have to leave my seat. I guess that's why I feel healthier in school?
