    When you eat something loaded with sugar, your taste buds, your gut and your brain all take notice. This activation of your reward system is not unlike how bodies process addictive substances such as alcohol or nicotine -- an overload of sugar spikes dopamine levels and leaves you craving more. Nicole Avena explains why sweets and treats should be enjoyed in moderation.

    The best way that I can describe sugar withdrawal is that it feels kind of like when you are extremely thirsty, and feel a great urge to drink water.
    Sugar withdrawal is similar to that - kind of like you are "thirsty for sugar" - and this is definitely quite unpleasant to go through during the first couple days.

      Very accurate. That's exactly how I also describe sugar withdrawals. It almost turns into a physical need after you don't eat for some time.

    • @0ptimal
      @0ptimal ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, similar description for drug addiction. But magnified. The brain and body adapt to the presence of a substance, wiring itself to function with it, and when that substance is missing the body urges the person to seek it, because now the system is out of whack. In essence it adopts the substance as its own, forms strong attachments, which becomes it's new reality. Pretty amazing process actually, and it permeates everything in our lives, these adoptions/integrations and attachments. Even non physical things. But there is an optimal balance for our evolutionary make-up, which is something we must obey, and many attachments we have are not beneficial for it. It's like a piano playing a beautiful song, and someone randomly adding an off note, or many. Eventually you may get used to the sound but at it's core it is distorting the fundamental structure of the song.

    • @Peter_1986
      @Peter_1986 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AA-le3xe Of course sugar causes withdrawal symptoms;
      sugar causes large increases in dopamine levels, and this is similar to the effect of actual drugs.
      I have been addicted to sugar on a few different occasions, and it feels extremely unpleasant when I try to stop eating sugar completely;
      in fact, it is so unpleasant that I have had to gradually decrease the amounts in small steps per day, because an immediate complete withdrawal makes me feel a huge "thirst for sugar", which will just make me end up eating even more sugar after a while.
      What do you call that, if not "withdrawal symptoms"?
      Am I _" not actually"_ feeling those withdrawal symptoms, even though they make me feel very frustrated and uncomfortable?
      That doesn't makes any sense.

    • @luckycharm1212
      @luckycharm1212 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You can't find balance. And that's why you keep eating it. It means you got or getting addicted to sugar. If that's the case then you need to treat sugar like any other drug. Abstinence(not moderation)is the solution for drug addiction. But if you believe that you are among some of those people who can take a few bites of dessert and stop or eat it occasionally then you can enjoy sugary treats. Else you are going to feel like a failure. And that's not your fault.

    • @ForTheGoodOfHumanity
      @ForTheGoodOfHumanity ปีที่แล้ว

      @@luckycharm1212 I could not agree MORE!!!! An alcoholic can’t drink in moderation, so why do is sugar addicts think we can just have ‘balance’. It might work for some, and by some, I mean 1% lol. You really do have to have an ‘All or nothing’ mindset with getting rid of sugar. There is no ‘sugar on the weekends’ or ‘sugar at special events’ bc for some that’s just a rabbit hole and it leads to binging. All it takes is that one piece of cake or that one cookie and BOOM you’re sucked in again. It’s a very VERY viscous cycle. As someone who is overcoming a binge eating disorder, I find that not eating sugar and bread keeps me from going off the edge. I love fruits! I eat them a few times a week! As for things with added sugars, for my health and my sanity I plan to never eat them again!

      It's true that the cravings die down and your tastebuds do shift, for example, fruit starts to taste much sweeter and better than it did before, but for many people, myself included, if you eat processed sugary foods again, they will instantly retrigger those high-level cravings that you had before. It's similar to having one cigarette after not smoking for 2 months. Unfortunately, if you are predisposed to finding sugar highly addictive, its difficult to try to have it in moderation. It will trigger binge eating, heightened appetite and cravings.

      its because you eat to much sugar, increase sugar levels, the body is taking in alot too fast, your stomach gets bigger, then you need to eat more because your stomach is bigger but your body is still the same and only needs at around 1100-2300 cals (different for everyone), but when you restrict the sugar your body will "reset" its calorie intake and boom, you are on your way to a better life. Pastry and junk food goes well together with tea/coffee especially in the countries with tea/coffee culture you end up eating something sweet along. Even if you want to stop eating, there is always some sweet at home and family members bring it and it creates more difficult environment 😅 Since childhood i am used to eat sweets every day and night like finishing a package of biscuits once or sometimes more. I realized that sometimes even i am full i still eat like an automatic robot and even sometimes have little nausea afterwards. If we don't have health problems now, it doesn't mean will not so i wanna make a change. For my future health and for my future kid. Kids like sponges in everything, so we should get a healthy eating habit so they can. Nothing is more delicious than being healhty.
    I am trying to eat less for like a week now and i am used to read ingredients of foods. Frankly it is still turning in my mind in day and want to buy when went to grocery shopping so trying to pass that unhealthy section without even a look. :) Lastly i was like "so what happened after eating them all, how i feel? Better or guilty?" it just feels good while eating not more. I feel like i should not have ate afterwards. If i really want to eat i remember these so instead eating many of them i just taste one or two and if i did it once in a day i don't do second one and more prefer home made than processed ones with many additives full of lab. I hope i will quit processed and sugary foods. It goes slow but i wanna believe it will work, i don't still clearly know if it is possible or not to cut off comletely after all this years. If you have any suggests please...

    Very informative. I would also recommend the movie "Fed Up" to anyone wanting to further expand their knowledge on how sugar effects the body.

    This is helpful information people should know. I am glad you are sharing it. I recently made a video on my channel about how much sugar can affect the body of someone.

    i once tried to stop eating any sugar.. just managed to do that for 3 days till cravings became to strong (and finding things without sugar became to much work). dont understand why drugs are illegal but sugar with the potential of a class 1 drug is actively added to everything.
