    it's important to note that if you have forms of mental illness or neurodivergence, your executive functioning and thus motivation to do nearly anything can be severely inhibited to the extent of it being debilitating. sometimes having the energy to simply eat lunch or watch a show you love just doesn't exist. to anyone who does struggle with it, i wish you good luck, there are ways to cope and you will be okay

      One would think that it’s more useful to list ways to cope, rather than proclaiming that ways to cope exist, but maybe that’s just me!

      @@ToraAnbu well, sometimes the problem needs to be raised first in order for people to find solutions. Step 1: accomplished, let's get onto Step 2 and 3: Find solutions and Execute solutions. For me I guess consulting healthcare professionals or psychiatrist is a good first step to know if you even have mental illness or any lingering problems and to what extent. I've heard a lot of people recommending changing diet and exercising to be successful solutions too!

    • @Kunabee
      @Kunabee 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +109

      @ToraAnbu The solutions are highly individualized. For example, for me, most of the available techniques do not. Work. Therapy helps but honestly my executive dysfunction is close to non-existent. It's... very not fun.

    As a Personal Trainer this resonates strongly! I read that over time, your motivation changes as the task becomes a bigger part of your identity. If you see yourself as a "gym person", you're more likely to go. If you pride yourself on doing the laundry on time, you're more likely to do the laundry. So if you can stick at your new habit for long enough, it might actually become easier to motivate for it :)

      Good luck! If I may offer a bit of advice - when you don't feel like doing anything, do something. Even if you just stretch for five minutes and call it a day. Sometimes a little movement is the spark you need, and it's always good to keep the habit going.

    • @hayden.A0
      @hayden.A0 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@gregcox777 Yep, that's pretty much the "2-minute rule" where you say to yourself that you'll only do something for 2 minutes. You often end up going beyond that because starting is the hard part, but once you do, the momentum keeps you going.
      Edit: I mixed up the definition of the "2-minute rule" (which states that if a task will take about 2 minutes, just do it now"). But I think the principle above still stands.

    Sometimes it might feel like there is an emotional barrier or discomfort when you think about a goal. Something that might help the process, would be to allow or embrace the sensation of that discomfort. Generally, allowing it can help it to dissipate. To then get back to a more content state. for years i've wanted to change my body shape, without doing anything about this. i finally cracked this problem by changing my goal. I defined the goal instead as being someone who goes to the fitness studio with their fitness clothes every day. That's all i need to do. The fitness studio is right next to my job. I just need to go there. I don't actually need to do anything when i'm there to fulfill my goal. However, when i've got there i find that uptil now, i've always done something, rather than just turning around. however, if i didn't do anything that would be ok too.
    By defining my goal as "i'm someone who goes to the fitness studio with my fitness clothes every work day" i turned it into something that is easy to achieve and also something that i could say that i am after the first day of doing it. It is no longer some nebulous distant goal but rather something that i am already achieving.

    Intrinsic Motivation
    कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन।
    मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि॥ २-४७
    You have the right to work only but never to its fruits.
    Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction.

    you have just mentioned motivation is the energy to do something. that's why literally lack of motivation can be due to lack of physical energy that will able you to do the thing not always for psychological reasons. that is why at first it is important to view yourself and know if you are burnt out physically too and try to rest to restore your energy as sometimes mental effort affects your physical energy and vice versa.

    In order to do something tedious but essential, we need two things like this video said. One is interesting to do it, two is having strong motivation to achieve it. Otherwise, we never make it something tedious ~

    Wow, this video taught me so much about motivation! 🌟 Thank you so much, Ted-Ed team, for breaking down such a complex topic in a way that's easy to understand. I never realized there were different types of motivation, like intrinsic and extrinsic. Understanding how they work can really help me stay focused on my goals, especially when I'm feeling unmotivated. Keep up the great work! 👍

    Discipline is what you need. Discipline is doing what you're supposed to do, when it needs to be done. Even when you really dont "feel" like doing something, discipline is what aids you to get up and actually do it, every single day.

      @slayqueensmith3829 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i agree, but we’re humans, not robots. we get tired and make mistakes and discipline is much easier when you like the task. like some people may stick to their exercise in the form of dancing rather than running if they enjoy that.

    Motivation is great and all but it's important to have discipline as well. Motivation is affected by how you feel, which can change all the time, but discipline means that you do it, no matter how you feel. You can imagine it as tuning on a machine. Motivation is the button/engine starter while discipline is the fuel/electricity/energy.
    Remember *hard choices = easy life and easy choices = hard life.*

    Mary Poppins put it perfectly then when she said
    “A robin feathering his nest
    Has very little time to rest
    Whilst gathering his bit of twine and twig
    Though quite intent on his pursuit
    He has a merry tune to toot
    He knows
    The song
    Will move the job along”

    One thing about Motivation I have a problem with, is when I (FINALLY) get the Motivation to do something, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, someone else needs my attention or needs me to do something else or do it another day when everyone else is more ready to do it with you (if you're in a team). Then when you get that alone time to do it, the motivation is gone.
    These past several years, I've had one of these problems a few times. It just sucks the motivation out of you when it's as if the Universe is putting annoying walls in the way. Not Obstacles or Hurdles, just walls.

    It's a bit more complicated than this. I personally have an extremely strong drive to pursue artistic arts, but a decade after starting to want this I've barely done a thing to make it a reality.
    Because I lack the energy to properly commit myself to the task. And I lack that energy because there are so many _external dispiriting factors_
    I'm someone who, at age 23, had the opportunity to pick life up after 4 years of grueling major depression, but at the end of that tunnel, there was simply a barren wasteland. 'Society' has all but lost all its social aspects - it's all moved online. The old carrot-on-a-stick for labour has long since been pulled way out of reach, there are no more socioeconomic benefits to be had. Being forced to work full-time just leaves me drained and dispirited to pick up anything new, and I doubt that I'm the only one who's in this situation.
    One _can_ have intrinsic motivation, but not have the means to act on it.
