  • Vision3 50D for Super 8 is a color negative film available from Kodak. It is a daylight balanced film that gives fine grained results with really pleasing and accurate colors. It is a great film stock to get started with especially for Super 8 cameras!

    We shot some Super 8mm in Greece last year and the results were incredible....50D film of course. I was able to inject the results in my larger film (which was digital) and the results were incredible....it was a nice change of pace and in the bright Grecian sun the results were breathtaking.

    Nice job! But I'm getting tempted to take the ancient 8mm camera down off the shelf and see if it can be made to work with current film. I really don't need another film obsession but you made it SO INTERESTING ! My dad went on a trip to SoCal in the 50's and it was recorded on this camera.
    The Super 8 we got later was smashed by mom Mom in the 80s when it screwed up a couple rolls of film in a row. Expensive and emotionally upsetting.

    if you’re also from Toronto, do you have any recommendations for places to repair/refurbish film cameras? I got a 8mm that I’d like to get looked at and possibly repaired. again, thank you for your informative videos!!

    Nice videos! I just discovered you today and alredy watched all the super 8 and 16mm videos. Great content and really well explained, Im learning a lot! Could you make a video about more professional/advanced super 8 cameras? I alredy shooted with a Canon 514xl but Im thinking about moving to something less automatic like the canon 1014xl or the nizo 6080, so would be nice to hear your toughts!

    • @cubdukat
      @cubdukat 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd go for the Canon 1014. The Nizos are great cameras, but in my experience, they're notoriously delicate. If it weren't for that, I'd highly recommend the 6080; I've shot with it before, and it would be my next choice if I couldn't have the 1014 or a Beaulieu 7008.

      I would avoid it, that model is only able to expose for 40iso film (many old cameras worked best with Kodachrome 40). This means you'll be limited when shooting the film available today. Kodak's 50D will work fine, but ones such as 200T and 500T will be over-exposed by quite a bit

    2. By signing up for the Small Gauge level, do you still get access to the full rolls?

    I have a query and wonder if you know anything about this. I filmed some Super 8 footage at 24fps. However, I forgot to note this to the lab and they automatically scanned it in at 18fps. Now I have adjusted the speed in premiere and it was somewhat successful but still results in jerky footage. Some of the footage is silent and it would be good to be able to give it the 18fps look but the other stuff I was recording audio onto a TASCAM and the change in speed has affected it. Other than getting it scanned again for £50 each do you have any suggestions? Thanks

    • @cogmovies
      @cogmovies ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess you've resolved this by now (being from 3 years ago), but thought I'd add my experience, which may help others here. Recently, I digitised several hours of Super 8 film from the 70's/80's for a friend. I projected the films using a Eumig 614D projector and filmed the projected image at 1080p with my iPhone 13 Pro Max using the Filmic Pro app. With this app I was able to capture at 18 fps - the standard Super 8 frame rate, and the frame rate used by the projector. Additionally, I was able to set the aspect ratio to 4:3, the same as Super 8. This process resulted in no flicker. I imported the video files to Final Cut Pro on my M1 Mac mini and set up a 1080p timeline at 25 fps. Final Cut Pro automatically conformed the video to 25 fps by adding extra frames intermittently - so, for each one second of footage, 7 frames were added. I also did some colour grading and sharpening. The results were surprisingly smooth, with no stutter or flickering. I am very happy with the outcome, and happy that I saved a friend from having to use a processing facility.

    • @lukesullivan2525

    • @AnalogResurgence

    • @cubdukat

      You won't have to worry about it. There's no filter notch on daylight film, so when you put it in the cam, the filter automatically gets taken out of the way.

    How about cameras that can record in slow motion!? Any tricks of the trade!?

    • @martyjackson4166
      @martyjackson4166 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Golden Dreams There are a fair amount of Super 8 cameras that can shoot at higher frame rates in order to get slow-motion, although just remember this will use up your Super 8 film extremely fast. But my Canon 814 AZ Electronic, for example, can shoot at around 40fps for slow-Motion (it has a weird little tigger switch you push down while filming at 18 or 24 to suddenly jump to 40fps). A lot of higher-end Super 8 cameras will have similar options. However, some cameras (like certain Minoltas) will require an extra add-on in order to run at these high frame rates (the Canon doesn’t).

    • @goldendreams3437
      @goldendreams3437 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@martyjackson4166 wow, is slow motion available in some 16mm movie cameras?

    • @martyjackson4166
      @martyjackson4166 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Golden Dreams Yep! Although it largely depends on 16mm camera you have. I have the original Canon Scoopic which can shoot 48fps, although I do believe later Scoopic modes can shoot up to 68fps. And most of the professional 16mm cameras will definitely be able to shoot high frame rates/slow-motion as well, when you get into models such as Arri 16mm cameras. As for cheaper, wind up 16mm cameras, it will largely depend. I believe most Bolex’s can shoot around 64 frames per second, but some older and cheaper ones might not be able to. If you’re looking into filming slow mo on such a camera, I’d recommend doing a quick google search on the model you’re looking at and seeing what frame rates it can shoot at. But you should find a good variety of 16mm that can shoot those high frame rates for slow mo!

    I would have used some of this by now if it had not been for a roll of 500T not taking.
    I "filmed" an entire roll to find that my camera's finger had torn a hole between two sprocket holes and so had not in fact moved it since the first shot. I think the clutch on the main drive wheel is slipping just too much to push the reel past the tightness of the first couple of feet, so the camera's useless now and those memories (including an irreplaceable stop motion sequence) are gone :(

    • @bartekmajewski2305
      @bartekmajewski2305 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This will not be due to your camera, but to a perforation error in the punching of the film material. I've had that before. I also had a cassette with the 50D with difficulties with film transport. I then tested the cassette on my other 5 cameras, always the same result - it was due to the mechanics of the cassette itself. Tip: take a waterproof pen and make a small line on the film, pick up, take out, check. If the mark is gone, it has pulled through the film. You only waste 6 frames, but you have the guarantee that the picture was taken.

      is that really significant? I remember in an overcast day with window light- there is not enough light for a 50D @18fps. And i have an XL camera even [the Minolta XL601] which is supposed to introduce more light . You really need to shoot in a sunny day

    • @Frisenette

      eladbari two thirds a stop *can* be significant.
      But mostly when you are using natural/existing light.
      If you are shooting a planned shoot, you put it when there is enough light or bring your own.
      I think originally the 15 fps standard was a compromise to get the price of entry way down.
      Less film used, smaller lenses needed, and the opportunity to sell lamps if people wanted to shoot indoors.
