Scotty Kilmer. Hello, I love watching your videos a long time ago. You inspired me for cars. Recently, I was concerned about my car start-up. When the ignition is on the position, it'll turn on normal noise at the last second it would like shake or sputter a little, then start and I changed the spark plugs brand new. So I was wondering would it be the ignition coils or the battery? Because sometimes the fan would come up, sound like my car is about to turn off, but it doesn't when im in a stand still or idling, please help or give me some advice. I would really appreciate it

Years ago when I was a mechanic (went to school for it) at a local place, a customer had a truck towed in, that wouldn't start. Turned out it was just out of gas. The owner of the shop informed the customer that it needed a carb rebuild and tune-up, plug wires, everything. I quit after that and never worked in garage again. There were a few other things that happened that were dishonest practices with customers. I've always been my own mechanic, but now age is catching up and I find myself going to a shop now and then for large labor/specialty jobs. Love Scotty's channel. If I would have worked with a "Scotty" in my day, no doubt I would still be a mechanic today. That garage I mentioned, has since closed down.

That's too bad because you likely had a passion for the craft, and a dishonest shop somewhat left a bad taste in your mouth. Mechanics typically don't have a good name. People generally often ask...do you know of a "honest" mechanic? That's definitely not just by random that is typically phrased in that way. Good for you for quitting.

Mechanically speaking, if a repair facility doesn't report and is unwilling to show you tangible cause (ie; worn out, leaking, torn/cracked, bent, broken or collaterallly damaged components) then they don't have a case and you should decline their suggested correction till they do or get a second opinion elsewhere.

100% honesty is different than 99%. Rethink about yourself and most of all, be honest to yourself first. Even you gave stuff away, think about when you were not 100% honest just because of comfort or whatever. I trully doubt your words. Never met a honest person complaining about the honesty of the others. Everything you said just suggests you're putting yourself in the bucket of the less dirty ones, still you were dirty at some degree. I don't know about your life, I'm just assuming, so don't get offended, I'm just a stranger on the webs.

Scotty. Your best informative video yet. I explain this stuff everyday to my customers. What hurts is those poor people coming with estimates, or worse, actual work done from franchises or dealerships.
I can give a 100 stories, the worst was a 2001 VW Golf 1.8T that went to a local franchise few years ago. Mileage was 160k km. They sold them $3500 work for all new struts, new brakes (which even if calipers were changed they were rebuilt), 4 way sway links, and thats it. All cheapest aftermarket parts. The most important they should have mentioned its an aged 1.8T and you need a timimg belt. Guess how I met them. Belt broke. Now I suspect all the other work besides maybe pads and possibly rotors was not needed. Luckily had a link back then and got a healthy low km engine for $600. Would've fixed the valves on the damaged motor but labor would be more. (Still less than 3500! because its a silly fwd 4 banger)
All in all total job with new powersteering pressure line was $1600. And somehow the franchise got 3500 for work that can be done in a few hours, that probably wasnt even necessey, and didnt even warn the customer of what was really important. Worse is they charge list price for 3rd line parts (that means if say a drive axle is 800 at the dealer, and the aftermarket is 180, they will charge you 800, this is what paying LIST means). I agree with any retail to make a percentage on your parts, but how do you justify 180 to 800 and its not even top quality? So you're lucky if the rotors or sway links last a year or two. Many great 1st line aftermarket products available for better than dealer prices and most last longer. Say you buy an original Honda balljoint from Honda. It is not the same quality or even manufacturer of the one that was installed when vehicle was new. Dealerships also use a lot of aftermarket from local suppliers.for work while charging your full List Price for OEM.
In the end its the only reason people ditch used cars for new because stealerships and francheesey locations rip people off. I will never understand why people trust the dealership representing the brand you bought to be the best at repairing it. They are parts exchangers where 70% of.the workforce is dumb kids. They will do peel outs with your car when you're hoping for simple oil change. A shop that actually shows you your car and the problems makes sense. A shop that won't let you into.the work area because of insurance issues is bull because any shop can get liability insurance for their customers, and if they sell you that story, they are hiding things. Get smart people and find independent shops. They're everywhere and even if they're shifty, STILL cheaper than the rest.

As a rule of thumb, if they tell you something expensive needs to be done during a regular maintenance visit, tell them to show it to you. Then tell them you're going to drive it awhile, and research the issue before you make your decision. There are shops that will purposely break parts of your vehicle, and them tell you it needs to be fixed, which of course it does. Use common sense though. If something breaks long begore it should, invesigate the situation.

Correct. This is what my mechanic recommended. I did this and when his head mechanic did a test drive they found a lot of 'give' in the right hand steering before the wheel turned and engaged. So they replaced a part and didn't charge me labour for it just the part. Now the car is steering great, the brakes are fantastic and I'm happy.

Years ago, a car repair shop told me that I needed new Rotors. My car, that I bought brand new, was only three years old at the time. The shop that I took it to was either a Meineke or Midas, I don't remember which one. The men there assumed that I had no automotive knowledge at all, so when they told me that I needed new brake pads, new rotors and a bunch of other maintenance care things that were completely unnecessary, I asked the mechanic to see my rotors. The man's face fell when I asked him that. He looked like he had swallowed his tongue as he walked to my car that was still up on the rack. They were perfectly fine, there was one tiny little scratch on one rotor that wasn't even near where the brake pads would touch it. They should know better than to judge a book by the cover. They learned a valuable lesson that day. As did I, even a well known shop can be full of crooks. Those rotors lasted me another ten Years. I never had to replace them.

You missed one more thing they do, They "test" your battery and say it has a bad cell and needs to be replaced. Had the front tires replaced and they said my battery was going bad. Asked if it had issues starting. Had no issues with it starting so I declined. That was over a year ago, still fires right up.
