Growing up I never really cared for blues that much. The more I listen to it the more I realize that so much of rock and roll was written from it. Ok - it’s highly addictive! I normally just strum the blues, with an occasional stray note or two… but for the last two weeks I’ve spent probably an hour of two each day playing this way and meandering around the pentatonics - all over the place. My ‘safe-space’ seems to have enlarged somewhat! And you’re still giving me ideas…………..
This is very basic blues guitar playing which I can play. I’m not being boastful because I’ve played for 60 years. But how I wish somebody could have taught me to play it in this way all those years ago instead of working it out myself by just listening to records over and over again. New players are very lucky to have a teacher like you to start off with…..and what a beautiful guitar! 👍🍷

Once you can play this well you can go on to explore more complex blues progressions….and continue into jazz (Ted Greene etc) if you enjoy it. Your idea of building up from the basic stuff is great and will really help new players to develop, improve, and appreciate the blues. Keep up the good work!

Tomo I’ve been a long time viewer of your amazing videos! I don’t usually comment, but this was a great lesson and I’m having so much fun playing it over and over again! Near the end of the video, you were mentioning on adding more complexity to turn the lightning Hopkins version into your own. I wanted to ask, would it be possible to make a follow up guitar lesson video if you ever have the chance and make a more advanced version of this from using the beginner Hopkins roots like you said in the video, and maybe incorporate a little bit of Tomo/SRV/Clapton spice (an example would be Clapton drifting blues) But this is so great! I feel ready for the next level!

Normally I play around this and I change slightly every time I play...I may play more chords... more phrases.. but in order to teach this well... I had to learn my own playing and made it super simple not play anything I would play! So that's why most people can get it. I still want to show how to play finger picking blues like this ... keep it super simple. I have many ideas after that! SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, myself.. we owe so much Lighnin' Hopkins!

Hey Tomo:) i love ur videos and I would say you’re top 3 inspirations for me as a guitarist; I’ve been playing about a year now:) The number one inspiration for me is this band called Her’s. I would love to see your reaction to one of their videos especially live:) they are my greatest inspiration for getting past the hump of playing guitar. I would love to see what you have to say about their style i feel it is very unique and different and a real shame they aren’t here anymore. I want their legacy alive still. Thank you for your amazing content:)
