Banjo player here. I don't know how I ended up here but Justin, I love your skill, your persona, talent and appreciate you. Amazing content and channel. You're a big contribution to the world of music. Thank you
Very educational I sure do appreciate it man everybody needs somebody to help them when they're trying to learn held me back for a long time fine thing you're doing thanks a lot buddy
If you ever wanted to learn to play like Justin, learn his songs and arrangements: the new lesson platform is the answer. It's truly amazing and a great community of like-minded guitar players is already building there
Yes it sounds beautiful, how ever bear in mind Justin has a perfect recording room, microphone, etc, and this is the result, but it's something for us mortals to work on 😊😊😅
Hi Justin, I'm glad you put this out because I've been wanting to get rid of the pick and this is the perfect time for me, my dog passed a few months ago and I don't have much lined up so I'll have no distractions. Peace 🕊️🙏.
Really well-structured, illustrated & explained…ideal for musicians trying to expand their repertoire from flatpick-based, single-line melodies & strumming. Really opens up the instrument…!
Thanks for the fingerpicking tips. They’re super helpful. I just started playing guitar and I’m 300 days in and I play every single day and I’m totally obsessed. I just started the fingerpicking part of the training and your video is excellent and very helpful.
Very interesting. I started playing in 1965 and was told in those days that a guitarist should wait at least a half hour after wetting the hands to play as to avoid arthritis in the future and of course I have always kept to that rule, guess I'll be rethinking this subject. Thank You for sharing, you are an awesome guitarist which I have strived to be all my life but yet fall so short. Always striving to be just a little better than the day before. You make it all seem so simple.
Great tips - thanks! I've been playing for over 30 years and my problem is that when I started finger picking there was no TH-cam videos to help me learn. So while I read some stuff and picked up what I could, I basically learned all wrong and now have deeply ingrained bad habits and I am trying to re-learn, but with more proper technique. I find it shockingly hard to do! But I do know the power of practice, so I am going to take your tips to heart and work on it.
I'm in beginner moving towards intermediate limbo...I find these are great tips and very useful. Thank you for posting this, and for sharing you're inspiring talent with us every time we see you pick up a guitar.
I don't even own a guitar, but I watched this video all the way through just to learn. Makes me want to sign up for the courses, but I should probably own a guitar first. Some old saying about old dogs and new tricks come to mind. Love your playing, Justin, and I often have your music videos playing in the background while I work.
I’ve been finger picking for 60 years, yeah, I know! I’ve never used my pinky, other than a rare plucked note when all the other fingers are busy. In my case muscle memory will probably never allow me to change but it’s a good exercise for those less stuck in their playing habits. Thanks for the lesson!
Thank you. All your tips are great, yet # 3, something so simple and effective. Also, you're a wonderful guitarist, thank you for sharing your time with us all.
For a couple weeks now I've had your music playing on loop and I've been so inspired to start playing blues guitar, but I didn't have an instrument. Until this morning! While listening to this video and fretting about buying a guitar on my way down to the dumpster, I stumbled across an acoustic Yamaha that a tenant left in the trash area. I was awestruck. After inspecting it and discovering it in great condition, I swiftly adopted it. Can't wait to get home and watch this vid and start pluckin on my new guitar. Thanks, teach!
Plus one on the hint to put Hands under warm water - Add a lil soap and it also cleans the finger of oils (strings last longer). If you add some dishes, your house partner sees a sink cleaned up? Bonus - they will be happy to hear you practicing after a chore is done!
But it softens those calouses on your finger tips you suffered so hard to build. So does Finger Ease! Then all the goop will lie in the valleys of the stting windings.
Wow,so simple, but a BIG thanks for that great explanation, I've been playing for 55 years, always admired fingerstyle BUT now I know how, just gotta practice it, That's what'll happen now 😊😊😊
Thanks for all of this advice brother ! I been playing since 1985 and never got to have a lesson of any kind, bless you for sharing your knowledge, it's made so many light bulbs light up with me😁 it's awesome learning things i wasn't able to before Internet videos and you explain it in a way that's easy for us ol' dogs, you rock bro !!!
THANK YOU for sharing! You are an outstanding guitarist, and for you to share your tips and secret exercises etc is wonderful. 👍 It is people like you that make the internet great. 🙂🎵
Hello, I can add a hand soaking method: In a two basin kitchen sink or two buckets, In one side you put ice or ice packs, get the water as cold as you can. In the other, water that would be a good hot temp water, something like like at a temp you would consider hot while washing your hands. Soak your hands in the hot water for one minute; then soak your hands in the cold water for a minute repeat this four or five times or until your heart is content. I like to add epsom salts. Thanks so much for your videos, I've always learned a lot. I'll sign up for you classes. Some people are just natural teachers.
Fantastic, I haven't had a chance to watch this clip all the way through but it looks like it's going to be an absolute banger and extremely helpful. Thanks Justin, I think this is just what the Doctor ordered.👍
The fingerpicking he's showing you is no joke. It looks easy, but it's not... I love studying Jimmy Page fingerpicking Style! What a fantastically great video thank you I'm strapping on my favorite Gibson and I'm getting on it!
Totally Awesome Tips and Lesson . And, adding the actual Musical Terms was Amazing. Man, I reflect on my first experience with learning the guitar, I was lended a guitar from a Teacher in high school and I was really into the Music of Arlo Guthrie. But the Mel Bay books in the guitar case was like trying to learn Greek literature. Thankfully my older sister stepped in and I was given Real Guitar lessons for my Birthday . It was the Thumb/Pluck style too.
Wow! This is a unique but useful lesson on fingerpicking! One style that I truly love and dig into every time I play the guitar! I've been watchin some videos, but, seldom finds the tips you're mentioning and showing here. Thanks! Great Lesson, Sir! 🤘🌟
I find taking a break, standing and relaxing helps to bring it all together when you go back to it. Sometimes the repetitive movements make me flub it up.
I like the way you play you help people like me if I ever give bad advice I hope that you or anyone else can correct me as I have a bad back sometime ago someone saw me fall and couldn't believe I survived
Gotta share this story. The first time I saw the Stones was Buffalo in ’81. T’was a cool September day. I remember thinking during and after how difficult it might have been to play guitar with chilly fingers. Heard much later they had buckets of hot water behind the amps to stay loose and limber. Never thought about doing it at home because the house temperature is pretty constant. Definitely trying Tip 3.
thank you so much for the great tips. I especially like the warm water trick. so much of your instruction make great sense. I also don't use my nails either and have always felt like I was a bit of a unicorn so seeing you playing the same way gives me some hope that I can be proficient. You have mad skills! thanks again for taking the time to make this video and sharing your knowledge.
I wil try the pinky pattern and others, great tips! I´d be careful with the warm water thing specially with steel rusted strings. Calouses are our friends, be careful not to let them all in the strings! :) But it can save you warm up time specially in a cold day. Be wise.
This dynamics, By the way, very usefull to exercise. I remember a famous pino Player saying: "My teacher told me just play in dymamic way... Then He let me do my own stuff." When I did so, I recognized it was Not as hard, playing the Same stuff over and over and should be easier er to find a own Style (hope so😂)
Finally, plain spoken and practical fingerpicking instruction that's gonna keep this heretofore frustrated ol' fart (73 yy) pluckin' around with it. Tuning to a chord, running scales with various paired fingers, the 'fist' method, et al. I'm amazed that no one ever mentioned those picking passkeys to me B4. I'm evaso grateful!😂🎉
Thank you Brother, you are my idol! Your technique is incredible. Tell me what guitar tuner you use so that you can tune open tunings without any major problems. Standard tuners do not include the fact that you want to set the B note on the A string. If you can provide a link to this tuner, I will be grateful. And once again I express my appreciation for the lesson and your skills. Respect!
I suspect people try to learn fingerpicking while learning chords or a song. Do 1 or the other. Leave open strings or put a capo or hold a simple chord. Learn fingerpicking.. Then learn the chord progression. Foundations. Foundations. Be Well. Thanks again Justin. I remember that Halloween Fingertwisting event you did a few years ago. I learned so much mastering those. Thanks..
Hi Justin thank you for this lesson. Are you using a 3/4 size? I find guitars are very bulky and cumbersome for me but yours looks a nice size. What sort is it please? I love the way you play, You are an inspiration thank you 🙏
Great steps for fingerpicking, though I'd offer one thought - As far as the right hand positioning, he might phrase it as "what works best for me", rather than this is THE way to position your hand. Michael Hedges, Leo Kottke and scores of others use a modified classical position which works wonders for their music. I taught finger style at one time, and learned too that no one size fits all.
I agree because when he said line up your arm straight with the strings my arm went passed the strings meaning I had to back my arm up until my hand was right where it should be, thanks.
@@douglaschristine8387 Thank you....I would say that I'm no one to question Justin or his teachings - he's a Master! - I only offered my own perspective on the positioning. As always, happy picking!
Mr Johnson in what you do you are a Shining Star 🌟; God Bless you 🙏

You have a winning strategy. Stay inspired and keep playing every day. ✨️
You are a very generous teacher. Thank you.
Justin...who taught YOU when you first started?

You got gifted that guitar by the universe bro
@@cwlter4223 Indeed! Been practicing daily :) (when I can haha)

The next element of music is articulation. This together with dynamics is what creates emotion within music.... Very helpful tutorial. Cheers Trev
The pinky and ring fingers are gonna kill me, but I'll persevere. Great video from the Master!
Thanks, Justin. You’re the best not just as a player but also as an instructor.
THANK YOU for sharing!

I've been meaning to pick up my guitar again after years of neglect, and you've really inspired me to give it a shot. Thanks, Justin.
