Had the opportunity to work on the B747-400 for a few years. They were getting a bit older now but wow!!!!! Pity Covid stuffed it all up. Would like to have seen them in the sky a bit longer. The ones that came to Cape Town were British Airways and they all are scrapped now...sad but true.

The Airbus is easy....turn Batt.. fiddle some switches to test fire warnings and so on, then APU...Then sit on your hands and don't touch anything until the self tests are complete. Else you build in your own "snags".

After a few hundred hours in the 737, I imagine it becomes rote, but wow, what a list to check just to get started. It took my ear a minute to tune to the South African (?) accent, but so enlightening.Thank you.
Thanks for the video! I work on the P8's which is basically a modded 73-8, and boy do we have to go through the book to start the apu, takes about 10 minutes to get it running!
Great video! came to see it since I have the 737 PMDG flight simulator on my PC. Whenever I startup the airplace from Cold and Dark i love going through all the procedures :) even the weather test. Though the IRSs I can choose for them to start almost immideately. All this is very familiar to me. I have the SimBrief from Navigraph which uploads all my flight data to the PERF/INIT page and ROUTE. Lots of fun !! Oh and i am also an Aircraft Maintenance student :) .... Cheers
Compared to newer aircraft its basic but very mechanical. No real computers here...just a few digital inputs here and there. Nice old school flying (almost)
I LOVE THE 737NG such an amazing Aircraft :D. I once got invited as a passenger to join the pilots in the cockpit on approach and landing and since then I absolutly love the 737 and fly nothing else in Xplane. I really want to become a real pilot on the 737 :)

Its because I'm an avgeek too. Good luck with the build. I've seen some guys do it on TH-cam by ordering pre-made panels. Cant remember from where but do remember that it was expensive. Sell a kidney, rob a bank or something. My little piggy bank has to little money and the Ball and chain will have a fit if I spend about half what my house is worth on "flying" in my lounge. She says sitting in a chair at home is not flying. Clearly does not understand the skill and effort it takes to do it properly.

Its old and takes longer to start like me...No the combustion chamber and plug are a matched set.. Sometimes they get mixed in the stores IPC. Then paperwork screws us. It happens. Waiting for comments on this one...

Me too... but as engineer I like it shutting down more. Just means it's done for the day, ready for the next. As a bonus it also means that my work is complete.
I will always envy the airbus pilots....pilots period, for all of the preparations they have to know, and how to call-out to tower control what information they need, and for the pilots to understand what the tower control tell them, at a fast pace of talk. To even know what the controls do in the cockpit, to what to do in an emergency.....for sure they need to get paid good!
The left wing no.1 fuel pump was required to boost fuel flow to the APU in the classics but this isn’t required for the NGs. A DC pump functions to increase fuel flow to the APU automatically once the APU is powered on.

Nice vid. I've never flow a 737 and oddly enough never jump seated in one ether, I was always home based when I flew. But its interesting, I flew the 175, and I could get that thing from cold and dark to ready for flight in like five minutes while only touching maybe ten buttons max (the FMS being counter as one). I know you slowed down for the video, but that's still pretty complex cockpit.
Can do in in a few minutes....The longest wait would be waiting for the IRS system to come online after 7 or so min, for the NAV side of things to work properly.
Technically, you don't. How do you think APU battery starts happen w/no elec buses? The APU has its own fuel pump, but it's best to run one of the tank pumps to help it out. It will start and run without it though. Same for Airbus.
The 737 cockpit preparations, the switches, the sounds, the "analog" feeling just makes me feel good. I love this aircraft
If you want to get even older with it, check out an MD-80 cockpit!

After seeing the Airbus startup, it's nice to see actual clunky switches and what sounded like an 'egg timer' as a warning bell.

Eyebrow windows are being removed.. So some cockpits don't have windows 4 and 5.(The Eyebrow windows)

Oh. Hey. The GPWS test seems to run the TCAS test too... the 737-600 has a seperate panel for tcas/tcas test.

the 800 is a slightly outdated model now, check out a newer 737's instruments

He mentioned the fuel pump at 4:37. Out of sequence but he showed that that switch was already on before he started the video.
