How To Diagnose Bad Engine Mounts - Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe

  • I am attempting to repair a vibration at idle on a Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe. It's mostly in reverse but drive vibrates some. I have found bad engine mounts on front and rear. I think this is the problem. In the next video I will replace the lower rear motor mount.
    Mechanic work can be dangerous. Proceed with caution at your own risk! Always use jack stands and follow safety practices when working on the underside of a vehicle. If you are not familiar with safe jacking practices and using jack stands correctly, then I recommend you do not attempt this repair until you are. Good luck.

    This video is incredibly informative. You do an excellent job laying it out for folks like me who have no idea how to diagnose potential degradation of an engine mount.

    Great video man! I appreciate you going through step by step and explaining as you go. Very thorough and informative with awesome camera work.. And I feel the same as you with how shops take advantage of folks with labor prices. Especially with the cost of vehicles nowadays, along with the cost of replacing parts. Great job and keep doing what you're doing!

    Honestly it's worth the money to have a professional replace the rear mount, but the other three are self-servicable.

    Hey! These videos are great, I’ve watched the whole series (not necessarily in order) and my brothers matrix needs this too. I wanted to thank you for making these and ask how the mounts you bought have held up in the time they’ve been in the car. I’ve seen mixed reviews for the more affordable mount kits as far as not lasting even a few months so wanted to see how they’ve held up for you/your niece. Thanks

    This is normal maintenance on front wheel drove cars. The cost of the mount kits have dropped sharply since the 80's when this first started showing up. Usually under a hundred dollars.

    So how long did those new mounts last? I’ve heard lots of stories about cheap aftermarket mounts not lasting well at all. Great vid. I’m getting LOT of movement of the engine when shifting from drive to reveres and back etc. I’m hearing like two little clunks after shifting into each gear. Initially thought it was cv joint but I don’t have any other symptoms. Not I’m pretty sure it’s mounts.

    • @TheHandsOnChannel
      @TheHandsOnChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      The mounts lasted a few years until the car was totaled, they seemed like a decent quality. Usually a cv joint will make noise on tight slow turns. If you have an automatic you can put one foot on brake one on gas, put it in drive/reverse and with the hood open you should be able to see movement if the mounts are bad. It can be done in a manual trans car with the e-brake. Good luck!

      @AmeriFanPicker ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheHandsOnChannel but how much movement is reasonable? I put three of four new oem mounts on my vibe (Toyota oem). Think I may have broken the front one though when jacking up the motor to do the rear one. That rear one was the hardest thing I’ve ever done on a car. Anyhow… I left the through bolt in but loose in hopes of getting the motor to twist forward when I jacked it up to get that rear mount in. Rather than just lifting straight up if that mount was undone. Anyhow I think I may have tore it. Can’t really get a good ion it. I do see some movement but it just seems like you’re going to have some movement since it’s rubber.

    Hi, we had exhaust replaced (including converter) on my wife's 2007 Vibe. After the new converter installed, the Vibe developed some vibration. There was check engine light and my wife brought the car back to the garage. The garage then told us the motor mounts needed to be replaced. We agreed, as the vibration was quite noticeable and even damaged the new exhaust. All mounts were replaced.
    After the mount replacement, an oil leak happened, that required a new valve gasket.
    Now after 2300 $ bill the car vibrates terribly and rambles loudly in reverse, and in Drive, when idle, at a stop and in slower speeds. There is also some knocking when driving and the car does not stay driving, gas pedal has to be constantly pushed. The garage basically gave us the car saying they cannot do anything else to improve the vibration. It however keeps damaging things, even the trunk rattles now and the doors and windows as well. Any idea if we can save the car?

    • @TheHandsOnChannel
      @TheHandsOnChannel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I suggest you take it in for a second opinion at a different shop. It may be that the motor mounts were not installed correctly. They may have disconnected something and not plugged it back it? Usually if a problem occurs right after other work is performed it is related to that work.

Damn rear one starting to pitch more than it should 🤮 like these cars but sure aint built too tough. Had to do bunch of seals already. front main, valve cover. Chain tensioner now a motor/trans mount at 60k😳 not what i would expect from a toyota. And the rear brakes squeal something horid! Tried EVERYTHING to shut em up good for a week then squeal again.
