    What is it with people thinking it's appropriate to steal walkers and wheelchairs? Seriously?

    • @stoopingfalcon891
      @stoopingfalcon891 2 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      It's more common than you think Trynia. My wife was confined to a wheelchair about 12 years ago after a heart attack and two strokes, obviously affecting her mobility. I was her full time caregiver, and we were in a local Tesco store when the dreaded 'Ahemmmmm' came from behind me. Yep, the full stereotypical Karen decked out in full regalia. The store was a bit busy so quite a few people around. (This happened in the UK). Now the chair my wife was in was one that we bought, lightweight aluminium, with a really nice metallic blue paint job, since most standard chairs were a bit too big for her to be comfortable in (She was not very big). Anyhoo, out of her mouth comes 'You need to hand over that chair and let me use it for my daughter since she is tired'. One of those "wriggle fingers in ears to make sure you heard that correctly" moments. Stunned me into silence for a few seconds, but given that I had in my younger days been UK navy, you can imagine I have a pretty 'colourful' command of language. I had half the store in stitches of laughter saying the things to her that I did, not printable on Reddit regardless that I didn't use swearwords in front of the little girl. The poor daughter was almost in tears at her mothers behaviour and kept trying to tell us she is sorry. My wife beckoned her over and gave her a little hug, reassuring her it was not her fault. THEN the Karen tried to say my wife had assaulted her daughter. Thankfully security arrived with a couple of cops in tow. I am glad they appeared, because my blood was boiling, and I was getting to that 'losing it' stage. A few mins later after watching video and listening to some customers, the manager banned her from the store for life. Dunno if she was ever charged with anything and I never saw her again, but I often remember her daughter and feel sorry for the life she must have been living with a Karen for a mother.

    I'm 37 years old, with one of those fun "invisible" disabilities. I have lumbar spinal stenosis. Basically the bones of my spine, instead of having a nice hollow in the middle for the cord of nerves, are caved inward and putting pressure on said nerves. It causes a LOT of pain and weakness in my spine, hips and legs. Walking or standing for more than a few minutes results in me bent forward until I'm basically putting my head where my hips are. I use a cane a lot of the time, just to help me stay upright, and give me some support. On a really bad day I have a walker. But on the outside I look fine, unless you have X-ray vision you can't SEE that my spine wants to murder me or cause me paralysis (which can happen as stenosis worsens over time) And I look young, I have a round face, and no real wrinkles or anything (yay skin care), and so far no one has challenged me over my cane or walker. I live in fear of one of these sort of things happening, because if they yank my stuff away, I'll hit the ground, and I don't respond well to aggression. I cry in reflex. So there will be a 37 year old woman on the ground crying like a baby and probably screaming because how else do you get people's attention? Honestly, I'm glad no one has done it, and if they do... Yikes. I'm scared of people as it is!

      I was diagnosed with a chronic pain disorder when I was like 21, and even though I don't need a cane anymore (it's off with a younger friend of mine with a spinal injury), I did get stopped by one older woman one time when I was out by myself. Fortunately I live in Australia, and we seem to get less Karens, so she was nice and sympathetic after asking me why I was using it. Talked about her friends that have the same condition and about how hard it is, and giving me her best wishes
      I hope if someone asks about your mobility aids that they're just as nice towards you, because even the looks strangers give can be a lot to deal with 😔

      Sound a lot like my daughter. She lost a leg in a bad accident few years ago. Most days shes fine walks around no problem, but some days its just awful for her, so she takes the cane out and we use the disabled spots. Thankfully no one has harassed her over it yet, but I dread the day someone tries to take that cane away. Because right after she falls, everyone around would likely get to see a Karen being beaten with a prosthetic leg.
      But even if its not clearly obvious, people who care see people struggling, most of us care, sadly there are Snooty's that well don't

      I understand what you are saying and how some disabilities are not visible
      and how some people treat those who are not visibly disabled. I have been there myself - I have 16 herniated, deteriorated, and nonexistent discs in my back and neck out of the 23 total discs in the human spinal column, combined with scoliosis and arthritis of my spine. Severe pain 24/7 and doctors who refuse to prescribe any medications for the pain because only opiates are enough to reduce the pain.

    Even employees can have very good reasons for not knowing where something is. They could be new, work in a different department, or the store could have very recently reorganized, just to name a few.
    Sometimes, I feel like we need to start an anti-Karen group that leaves a review like, “let’s unruly customers ruin everyone’s day without consequence” on any store that does that, every single time it happens. Until, management takes the hint and realizes that letting customers act like brats ruins their reputations and profits.
    Remember, it’s not Karen-behavior to politely try to deal with genuine problems.

      I work at a store, and a customer was yelling at me because I couldn't show him where the nail clippers were. I knew where they were, but I couldn't think when he is just getting mad at me for nothing. Luckily, another customer came to my rescue. When the yeller got his name clippers, he called me an it. I'm trans, and that warmed my heart, because most people call me Sir and stuff (it's annoying, but it makes sense as I still look male as a trans girl, expecially in my work clothes). Basically, it would have been easier not to yell at me for some nail clippers.

      I gather that these "managers" are a product of times when "business advice" lectures harped on about customers being the most important resource for a business, with employees being 'way down the list in importance.
      This is ass-backwards. Without employees, and good employees at that, you could have as many customers as you can imagine but you'll still lose money due to lack of good service for them.
      First, take care of your employees, then the customer service will mostly take care of itself.
      To put it more bluntly, employees are a business' most valuable resource. Good employees attract good customers and more of them. Bad (or a lack of) employees and a lack of sensible but strict tactics to control problem customers will drive away good customers.
      The "Customer Is Always Right" mantra, besides being completely wrong and a misquote, has caused many businesses to go under. It will cause many more to go under and it's harming the profits of the remainder who subscribe to that ridiculous mantra.

      I argue that if any entity of authority prevents you from having the necessary tools to defend yourself then they should be forced to take responsibility for your safety and therefore be liable in a lawsuit if they fail to protect you. So in your case if a store corporation or even just the manager prevents people from carrying tasers or knives or pepper spray and such then the law should be written so that if anybody attacks the employees the store shoulders the responsibility for damages and reparations because they actively prevented the employee from being able to adequately defend themselves. And I say this also for government entities and public spaces. If you go to a museum and they pat you down and take your knife and pepper spray away from you then if you get injured by another person who attacked you and I'm using him should be held liable.

    • @advorak8529
      @advorak8529 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, you argue that everyone on a plane should be allowed to carry a bomb to defend themselves from a terrorist with a bomb. Makes perfect sense.
      I guess you should ring the idiots who thought of nuclear non-proliferation and the idiots who thought reducing the number of nuclear weapons was a great idea and tell them.
      If nobody is allowed certain weapons, then suddenly you complain about the “level” playing field and cry it is stopping you from defending yourself. Because you need a taser (or whatever) … yet a 5 year old can tase you from behind and bring you down without any chance to react. Of course you’d be fine with that because you could not otherwise defend yourself.

She paid in "exact change" but was 5¢ short. I informed her as she was walking away and gave me a Nickle. As I was putting it in the draw, she raised her voice at me "Where's my change?!" I responded "What are you talking about?" "I gave you a Dime, which is 10¢ by the way!" Because the coin was still in my hand, I lifted it p and said "This is the coin you gave me." She said "Yes, that's the coin I gave you, which is a Dime." Fed up, I said "This… is a Nickle. A Nickle is worth 5¢. If you look here closely, it says 'NICKLE.' Therefore, this isn't a Dime and therefore is not worth 10¢. Just because this coin is bigger doesn't mean it's worth more." I then dropped the coin in the draw, slammed the draw shut and said with a bit of a rude town "Now have a nice day and enjoy your movie." She walked away offended but didn't say a word.

    Usually these stories of entitled people don't get to me, I just think about them rationally. But today I got angry and felt physically sick when listening to the third story. When Snooty attacked OP, she could've seriously injured a disabled person. And she just walks away and when confronted spins the whole story around to further hurt OP. Not only is she entitled enough to believe she owns the world and everyone owes her, but she's also so confident and mean-spirited that she's willing to take her violence out on disabled people. She's a menace to society and OP did the right thing by not letting this slide. Nobody should ever get away with this kind of behaviour.

      Narcissism in a nutshell.
      One of the biggest red flags telling you that you're dealing with a narcissist is that they will *NEVER* acknowledge that *they* are to blame for *anything* bad that happened, not even in the slightest, it will *always* be someone or something else's fault, not theirs. They are also obsessed with having control over others, so it infuriates and enrages them to either not have or to lose "control" of the people around them. And in the case of a narcissist who was previously in a relationship with a significant other, it is very common for them to turn into a stalker to try and re-establish control over them, and they will often play the victim and try to actually make you feel pity for them or to make you feel like *you* are the "bad guy", since they figure they could then exploit that pity/sympathy to manipulate you into giving them what they want. And if that fails, they will often then try to resort to damaging or outright destroying your relationships with your friends and family in the hopes that it will result in them being the only person you have left to turn to. They are an extremely toxic influence, and you should stay as far away from such people as possible, even if it means getting a restraining order against them, or finding some other way to keep them away from you. Even if you try to move away to get away from them, there's a good chance that they will simply try to hire a private investigator to track you down and spy on you so that they can continue to stalk and harass you.

    The story from the Australian Police Officer reminding me of a similar incident happening to me, and it was in a Walmart. This was in 1999 and I had just gotten off duty and was still in FULL, dark blue uniform complete with highly shined, leather pistol belt, etc. I was looking for camcorder tapes (1999 remember) when I hear "excuse me" behind me. I paid no attention at first but this went on for several minutes until finally someone jerks on my right shoulder. I spun around in defensive posture and asked; "what is your problem." I was facing a women probably 70 years old. The woman stared at me and finally yelled, "are you going to ring me up or not?" It took a moment for this to sink in. I, in my most professional voice responded, "ma'am, I clearly don't here." She immediately yelled back, "then why the hell are you wearing a uniform?" At this point, I'm done. I turn to face her and began..."do you not understand what this badge says? Can you NOT read the patch on my shoulder? And, do Walmart cashiers wear pistols belts and carry .40 caliber autos? Before this...person...could say anything else, I said very sternly, "You actually, knowingly, assaulted a police officer. It's time that you left." The department manager, who was the wife of a brother cop, saw most of this exchange and escorted this woman to the door.
    Now...this story isn't done. About a month later, I was on patrol when this Lincoln Towncar blew through not one, but two red lights right in front of me. I hit my lights and siren and finally get her pulled over. I get out and walk over to the driver's window and guess who it was! And it gets better...she had a suspended driver's license AND a failure to appear warrant for speeding. This made my day!

Actually a street over, Justina Road, the school was on University . At LEAST twice a week I would be stopped by the police on my way to/from class asking me why I’m not in school. Where are you supposed to be? It drove me crazy! I’m 62 now and honestly, the “you’ll appreciate it when you’re older “ wore thin very quickly. The last time a sheKaren tried to take the walker I grabbed her by the front of her shirt pulled her face in real close and threatened to "do her bodily injury" and, I kid not, she actually asked what that meant as she had no idea. At least the old lady had the courtesy to ask how old I was. I was 17 at the time. She gasped and explained she thought I was *14.*
