This is one of my favorite stories: I owned a coffee shop for several years. One day a man stopped in and ordered two coffees to go. Ok. No big deal. He left his client in the car because he suffered from MS. He was a regular in Reno, Nevada for many years, riding buses everywhere, being independent, riding his adult tricycle, an amazing guy, as I was soon to find out. So my coffee (yep, a boast, I roasted my own) was to his liking, and it took about six visits before his caretaker could get him to come in. His MS had degraded so bad that he was embarrassed to come out in public. I know enough rudimentary ASL (sign language) that I could communicate with him. He found a home with us, and every doctor's appointment or whatever other errand he had to go to, he demanded to come and get a coffee and a sandwich. He found a welcoming place. When he died, I actually closed the coffee shop for the afternoon and paid all of my employees (who also learned ASL at a basic level on their own initiative) to go to his funeral. (They would have done it for free.)

Story 5, I also had a problem with a pizza place that moved in down the road and had a phone number 1 digit off. The owner there also give me a bunch of crap and told me to get used to the calls, because he wasn't going to change their number, or correct people calling. So, after being told to "f" off several times, I started taking pizza orders and promising things not on their menu. The manager cold and told me we had to stop, but I told him he just get used to it. He eventually bit the bullet and changed his number in all his advertising, but it was too late. They had already had a bad reputation by then and they went out of business a few months later. Now I worked as an engineer at a large mfg company and I dont have time to answer the phone all day.
So, I just started making appointments.
It changed after about a week of it.

  • @EricTheKei
    @EricTheKei 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

Last one: Back when I worked at PJ's (big chain), they would buy people's numbers in a heartbeat in that situation or something similar (even if an ad with a wrong # had never been posted) -- all it took was proof that it was happening, and they'd offer the homeowner 3 or 4 grand and a crapload of free-pizza coupons to "buy" their number right away. I think they even preemptively attempted to get any numbers they could think of that might be "too close" when setting up a new store.

To be fair, they probably didn't get the number wrong in all of their advertising. So some calls were probably coming in correctly, and some calls were going to the original poster. Changing the numbers would have just reversed the two groups.
Now, once they got the number wrong on an ad campaign including local billboards, they probably should have realized the group that was wrong had gotten bigger than the group that was right and considered changing it then.

    • @annana6098

They really should have just paid for the family to get an unrelated number and the phone company would give them both numbers with the consent of the family. It might not be pocket change to the average person, but it's not absurd for a company.

Thankfully it was only one afternoon, but OP is right, some people do not listen, they don't even say hi before saying their order. For a time our number was similar to, but not very, the local number for British Rail passenger enquiries and we used to get the occasional call for them. Generally no harm done but on a couple of occasions we had calls early in the morning. People were usually very apologetic and polite when we explained. The problem suddenly went away because the service was switched to a national not local helpline so the numbers were nothing like each other.

    • @sarumano884

      a) Friends of ours used to have a number that was one digit away from the number of the local cinema. Their phone used to ring day and night, to the point that they kept a current cinema program by the phone, but they couldn't avoid the Karens who rang demanding tickets then screaming for them to be fired. They didn't go as far as the OP though. They simply spoke to the GPO and got a new phone number.
      b) Friend of mine lived in a Wiltshire village, near to a public phone booth which of an evening would ring, non-stop. He reported it several times, engineers would arrive, check the phone, pronounce it to be working perfectly, and leave. No-one, of course, would work in the evening, when the thing was ringing off the hook. Long story short, one day he answered the phone as caller after caller rang it, eventually gathering from some one, the number they were ACTUALLY trying to ring... They were ringing the right number, but using the wrong dialling code.
So he rang the right number on the right dialling code, and found himself on air, talking to a local radio station in Kent, and telling the DJ and his late-night phone-in callers that half of them were ringing a phone box in Wiltshire!
I have to report that the calls did not cease, so after a set time of the evening, he would simply walk over to the phone box and take the handset off the hook...

About 45 years ago, my parents moved to a different part of their state. Since this was pre-cell phone or anything else, they had to get a new phone number. Unfortunately, they were given the old number of the county planning commission, the people that give building permits and tell you what is legal or not. I would occasionally visit my parents on the weekends. My mom told me that people were calling several times a day because they were using out-of-date phone books. My parents were always very patient and redirected the callers to the new number. Me, I am petty. Anyone that would call a government office on the weekend is not too bright. I was at their house one Saturday when a belligerent man called wanting to know what permits he needed to build a garage, toolshed, and put in a driveway. He was rude as everything. I politely told him as far as I knew there was no regulations (wrong) and no permits (wrong) required. He asked how far from the property line his buildings had to be and I told him right on the line if he desired. This was one of maybe five calls I took during visits. My parents began telling me that there were several people in the paper that got huge fines, had to move buildings, etc. and they all said someone at the planning commission said it was ok to build wherever they wanted. I told my mom I was very pleased that I sounded so professional. We laughed our butts off!

Being autistic myself (though more independent than that poor boy), I will explain for those of you who aren't just how bad pulling his headphones off was (story 3).
He could most likely hear his mother just fine even with them on. He had them on because the sheer level of noise in the building was physically painful, so on top of possibly damaging a decently expensive piece of property, he was also then subjected to debilitating amounts of sensory information. I compare that kind of environment to the idea of having a power drill boring into my ears.
Then he's being yelled at by some random stranger, and other people also get involved shortly after, presumably also with raised voices. Speaking from experience, dealing with other people is the *last* thing he should be doing in that state. He'll either break down in spectacular fashion or go absolutely ape shit. In that moment, the only thing he would want is to stop whatever is causing that distress

In the '90s my wife and I had a number ending in 2499 and a nearby school had the number ending in 2449. Every schoolday morning we got calls from parents whose kids were staying home sick that day. So I recorded the sound of a fax machine as the greeting on our answering machine, and flipped the switch to make it pick up on the first ring. So people would call, realize it couldn't possibly be the right number, and dial more carefully the second time. Our friends and family understood, and just left a quick message so we'd call back. Luckily, the phone company people were very understanding and didn't charge us for giving us a new number.

I love how the mother and son go to the store every Monday, so he can organize the shelves. It's probably because he NEEDS to organize something, and everything at home is already organized.
I wonder if he would like it, if she woke up early, and made things untidy, so he could organize it, or if he would take that as teasing. I think that COULD be good, but only if she asked him first. "Honey, would you like me to make a mess for you to tidy?"
And that man! Even if the kid WAS an employee, it does NOT give him the right to ASSAULT him, by ripping off his headphones, nor to yell at him.
If an employee is listening to music at work, it's almost certain that they have PERMISSION from the management to listen to music at work. I know that if I were a manager, I'd give my employees who are not in customer-facing roles, such as stocker or cleaner, permission to listen to music on headphones as they work. It helps them stay focused on the job at hand, and they are MORE PRODUCTIVE, so in my mind, it is MORE professional, not less. Obviously, someone in a customer-facing role should not be listening to anything, as they need to focus on the customers, but a cleaner? Nope.

A neighborhood guy I knew had something similar, but it was a one-time wrong number. Guy wanted Marisha or Marishka or something along those lines. "Sorry, no one by that name here." Insistence. Denial. Aggressive insistence. Emphatic denial. Guy just wasn't getting clued in that there was no M there. "You put her on or I'll come over there and you'll be sorry!" Ohhhh hohohohoho, game on!
Bud started taunting him, calling him a small cat, guessing at his physical "inadequacy", so on and so forth. Persistent Guy was getting riled up into a froth. "Come on, little cat, I'm waiting for you! I'm Alex, and I'll put a dress on you and make you my beeyotch, little boy!" After a further stream of expletives, Persistent Guy probably blew a few blood vessels and hung up, flying down to... wherever... to go look for Alex.
I probably mangled a bunch of details as I heard the story years ago, but the convo was generally as above. I wouldda paid big bux to see PG's arrival at where M was supposed to be.

    Story 3:
I had a similar experience that has made me scared of using public transport again. A while ago I had to get a haircut and the only opening they had was after one of my shifts. It was really stressful with busses being late or not arriving at all and me being scared of arriving late and entirely missing my appointment on top of the stress of not being familiar with that place. I'm autistic and was getting pretty overstimulated very quick, so I put on my noise cancelling headphones and listened to music while waiting to get to my stop. It was really crowded in the bus and I had to struggle and push my way through the crowd to get to the doors. In frustration of the crowds and stress, I let out a "goddamn". I put my bags down for a bit while grabbing my phone to check the directions when a lady with stroller marched up to me and started violently jabbing my shoulder while screaming about having to apologize. I was clearly caught off guard and uncomfortable, the deer in the headlights.
And that was the point where I broke. I was pushed into a non verbal meltdown and could not do anything except for cry. I couldn't even get my body to slap her hand away. After a minute or two, she walked off with who I assume was her daughter and muttering something along the lines of "kids nowadays" and I think also something about me being racist ( I'm white as can be and she was dark skinned). I don't even know where she came from, but I assume she was also on that bus and I happened to bump into her or something. She wouldn't even explain why I needed to apologize, so I have no idea what I did that offended her so much. The entire bus ride I was listening to music and tapping along with it on my bag (it's one of my stims and often helps me stay calm). The only reasons I can think of why she assaulted me was bumping into her or the one curse word I muttered under my breath.
I was hysterically crying on my way to the hair salon and when I got there, the staff was extremely kind to me. They gave me some water, let me talk with them about what's wrong, waited for me to calm down, etc.
I never saw the lady again and I hope I never will. But if I do, she better run. I wish I could've pressed charges or anything, but she was gone before I realized.
Why do people think it's okay to assault random people for the smallest things? I had bruises from that encounter for days.

A random costumer started calling for me, and asked where pasta was. My response : "I'm sorry, I work in the other store in the same chain. The pasta however should reasonable be in some of these isles. Better than that I can't help, ask someone in green shirt".
The costumer said maybe 20 "misscousy misscousy" as a way to apologizing. I just had a big smile and to this day I remember that summer being one of my favourite workplaces ever. Long story short, she is the kind of person that just loves to help people, and seeing me pushing my wife in her chair, just wandered around with us fetching stuff for us to put in the cart. The reason I call her Karen? That is actually her name. Even after my wife passed, she and I have been great friends. If there was a gold star award for GOOD Karens, she would deserve two of them.

The last story, reminded me of when I used to live in Tennessee. Around Thanksgiving we started to get a lot, and I meen, a lot of calls for Piggly Wiggly, because our number was one number off. Asking for the meat department, because they were having a meat platter special! When we tried to explain they had the wrong number they would hang up and dial our number again. Finally I just started taking orders after telling them they had the wrong number, they insisted they had the right number. Asking for their names and told them that we are having a deal until 5pm today, buy two platters and get a gallon of sweet or unsweetened tea for free. Thanked them and told them their order would be ready for pickup in 30 minutes. I, would loved to be a fly on the wall to see what came next.

Also it's a varry bad idea to lay hands on an employee as they could be a minor and touching an employee will get you kicked out of a store fast.

I had a similar problem with a Burger King, but my number was TWO numbers off from theirs, so the calls were mostly sporadic. Did have one elderly lady who called once a week, every week, and couldn't seem to remember what I told her. from one weekend to the next I asked if she was going to the Burger King to pick up her meal herself and she told me "No, I don't drive; my son goes". So I asked to speak to the son, explained the situation, and he basically told me to "F*** off". So, from then on I took her orders. After about 6 more weeks, the calls ended!

The last one... I am surprised they didn't 1) call the phone company and see if they could get a waver on having their number changed (would have been the easiest), and if they wouldn't... get a lawyer to actually write up the terms, and include his legal fees to the fee of changing the number and send it and the details to the corporate and the store.

Why can't people be normal. I politely asked a person a question who I thought worked there. She said, "sorry, I don't work here." I replied, "oops, I'm sorry." She then smiled and said which aisle she thinks it might be in, which she did not even had to tell me. I thanked her and we went our merry way. That is how mistakes should be handled. I then was more careful and found an employee that told me the correct location. Problem solved. No yelling, no grabbing, no insults are ever right to do to anyone. Just treat others the way you expect to be treated.

I worked at an Office Depot back in 2020 and this guy came in with I assume family and/or a caretaker looking for a shredder. Ive always been a quiet person from trauma and dysphoria and this was my first customer facing service job so I was still figuring out a good volume level. He was already complaining about the masks and apparently couldnt hear me but instead of asking me to speak up or telling me, he tries to grab me to rip it off. This guy looked like a GTA hobo and there was a pandemic so I jump back quickly in a defensive position (many years of wrestling and self defense) and he got angry that I dared to not let him touch me. Now despite the introverted nature, my fight or flight always goes immediately to fight but I needed the job so started talking to the person he was with instead and completely ignored him and his bitching and calling me slurs (i wear a rainbow bracelet). They still brought the printer and my bosses seemed thoroughly baffled that the shy, quiet person even had that response but also that I wasnt rolling over to be scolded for something where I did nothing wrong. "I made the sale didn't I?" "Well yes but you disrespected a customer." "I wasn't letting him assault me. I even got her to buy the warranty." "Why are you suddenly so difficult?" "It comes with being the family disappointment. I was hired as a stocker but was thrown on floor and register. This is why I insist on stocking instead so can I go back to that now?" "*concerned Spanish grandmother noises*" The other manager was back the next day and found my retelling hilarious, and said I did well but probably just turn up my radio next time. I did not see GTA hobo again in the following 2 months I worked there, a chunk of which I was out sick with not Covid but realized it was time to look for a new job when I was disappointed it wasnt.

I broke my wrist and screwed up my shoulder really bad in January. I had to pick up some chicken scratch yesterday which was too heavy for me to lift being a 50lb bag. I found a couple of people that worked there that were talking about something. I politely asked for some help and the younger gentleman said 'Sure no problem!" took it to the front, and then to my car. At no point did I grab, poke, insult, or harass anyone. I just thanked the young man.
I was raised to act like a civilized human being and not to act like a Karen and not to grab at people. If I'm in line and the person in front of me and they didn't hear the person at the register call them, or some person didn't hear me saying "Excuse me, can I get past?" if they are blocking the lane, or "You're next" If the cashier is beckoning them. I will very gently tap their shoulder or forearm and repeat what I said. Even though I have PTSD a light tap followed by an explanation doesn't bother me. Grabbing me and screaming at me would. Hey, sometimes I'm distracted and block the way myself. And my response is "Oops, sorry, let me get out of your way". I will help someone in a wheelchair or scooter if they need it, I really don't do demands from Karens though. Even Karen employees that WILL NOT help you. Yes, they happen.

I've had my cell phone number for ten plus years. I still keep getting texts/calls for another woman. I think she is just giving out my number/her old number just to get people off her back. Thankfully I can just block them on my cell. I even had creditors coming after some man no matter how many times I told them I didn't know who this person was. I finally had to bitch out a manager to get them to stop calling me *DEMANDING* to talk to him. Now normally 'wrong number' is enough, not not this time as they were getting more and more nasty and I had had enough after blocking multiple numbers from this place. Geez take the hint people!

For story 3, I understand why that man should have had charges pressed against him, but I also can't fault the mom for choosing not to. If Joseph is easily overstimulated, that was probably a LOT for him, and he most likely needed to get to a place where he feels safe to calm down to avoid a meltdown. Staying there and having to talk to cops he doesn't know probably would have made things worse. And unfortunately, there are WAY too many stories of cops shooting autistic kids having meltdowns because they don't know what's happening and think the kids are a threat to others. If I thought I or another autistic person was close to having a meltdown I wouldn't want police involved either.

Last Story - Pizza - Why would anyone entertain this Wrong Number? ...
Well- if you live in the sticks, boondocks, or just too bored for your neighborhood.... this entertainment is GOLD!
In the city I worked for Domino's for a few years. My 1st manager was Golden! He taught me everything, literally. I could run the store while he was on VaCa But he got transferred to someplace else.
New manager was going to prove Herself. ... I was the 'Noid' in the costume, following her around for her promotional tour.
Eventually She took us out of our area and started to tell people, businesses and companies that we could give them services... I said that a manager in 'this' area would be able to give them services. ... Our area was 'such and such'
... oh, she didn't like to be corrected. But I wasn't saying anything from my point of view, but corporate standards. She would find out. ... but she was blonde, pretty. .. cute.. and all that, and thought she could sway me. What? Not my rules. Anyway I had a GF I was loyal to, so this upstart mngr was no threat to my relationship... this upstart was thinking that I was like the rest of her ladder, and thought I was kissing 455 to be promoted. No. As if. Nupe. I Got A Transfer. See Ya! Just a mile down the main street of our Capital, tag! Fail on your own Brenda, I've already succeeded.
Willie Nelson: On the road again... .. delivering pizza like corp said I could. Assistant manager in 6 weeks again. And there I am again on the road again. (This work history is in the late 80s - early 90s)
