    Great video. We just finished painting some chairs with spindles and I wish that we had had that wonderful painting sponge. What a great idea because painting spindles can be tedious and if you're not careful and put to much on you get ridges and drips. Not very nice at all. We ended up doing a lot of light sanding and smoothing. This is what happens when your hubby helps and he as a heavy hand.

    Lightly sand the chair with 150 grit sand paper, spray a thin coat of primer and finish with coat of paint using a 3 inch roller on the flat portions and a 2 inch brush on rounded areas. The finished product looks cleaner, more even and takes the same amount of time.

    I'm new to this process and have been timid at just doing it. Your videos and products are the most helpful I have found! I'm wanting to do an old hutch that has been passed down from the 70's. Would this piece be too big for my first "project"?

      Thank you very much Lanee! I'm so glad to hear you've enjoyed our tutorials.
      If you're really nervous, it might be a good idea to find some smaller home decor items you can paint to build up your confidence before you tackle a large piece like a hutch. Make sure it's something unsentimental so you won't be afraid to play around with new techniques on it!

      If you're using a durable paint like ours, you may not need to use a top coat at all, but if the chairs are going to be very high traffic with potential for scratches, spills, etc. then something like our Clear Coat is a good idea to add extra protection and durability: shop.countrychicpaint.com/clear-coat/

    Do you think that this sponge technique would work on stair spindles/ballisters? They aren't straight-they are "carved"-about 1"-1 1/2 " in diameter. I hate painting them and they are due for a refresh.

    • @CountryChicPaint
      @CountryChicPaint  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Deb,
      I don't see why not! I think a sponge would work beautifully for any spindles. Just be careful that you don't push the sponge too hard into any carved details or you might produce some small bubbles. I would recommend using a sponge for the majority of your work, then a small detail brush for the rest.
      Happy painting!

    What kind of paint is that and can you get it in silver and do you have to use a primer first? How do you know it won’t stick on peoples arms after you paint it or rub off on their clothes

    • @CountryChicPaint
      @CountryChicPaint  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Kathryn! The paint used in this video is Country Chic Paint (shop.countrychicpaint.com/paint). It's not available in silver unfortunately, but we do have several pretty shades of grey that you might like. Primer is most often not required, but it can be helpful for non-porous surfaces like laminate, metal, or glass.
      Our paint is designed to be very durable so once it's dried it won't rub off on clothing or skin. If wet paint does get on your clothing, just rinse it out before it dries. This paint is water-based so cleanup is very easy!

    • @CountryChicPaint
      @CountryChicPaint  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Deborah,
      I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! That's a great question. In this particular case we didn't do any prep work except cleaning the surface to remove any dust and potential contaminants. However some pieces with a shinier finish or oily products on them might require a bit more work. Make sure you check out our surface prep tutorial for full instructions: www.countrychicpaint.com/pages/surface-preparation
      Happy painting!

      You don't necessarily have to, but wax or a top coat is a good idea for adding extra protection. If your piece will get a lot of heavy wear and tear, our Tough Coat is a great option!

    • @CountryChicPaint
      @CountryChicPaint  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't always have to, but giving your piece a light scuff sanding to remove some of the shine is a good idea. That will help with adhesion. For more surface prep tips you can check out our tutorial at www.countrychicpaint.com/pages/surface-preparation

      Normally we recommend waiting about 1-2 hours between paint coats but if you're painting very thin coats with a sponge, you can probably get away with starting your second coat sooner!

    Was this chair sanded before painting?

      This particular chair was not :) For any glossy pieces though, be sure to give them a quick sand to dull the shine a bit!

    after 2nd coat how long to dry before distressing?

    • @CountryChicPaint
      @CountryChicPaint  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question Melanie! It depends what kind of distressing you're doing. If you're using sandpaper you'll want to make sure the paint is completely dry before you begin distressing it, so 2-3 hours is best. If you're wet distressing with a damp rag, you'll probably only need to wait about 30 minutes.

    But how do you paint JUST the spindles?

    • @CountryChicPaint
      @CountryChicPaint  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You will probably need to tape off the top and bottom of the spindle to avoid painting the wood banisters etc.

    Please stop painting gorgeous hand crafted hard wood chairs , you are doing damage that will be virtually in possible to rectify. The person who built that chair will be spinning in their grave let alone the person that felled and seasoned the timber and the tree that died to make it. Quality vintage furniture is not throw away IKEA furniture, next year when the "shabby chic" fad goes out of fashion that 60 year old chair will end up in the bin. If you fancy painting something get a job as a decorator .

    Painting a chair is not refinishing it refinishing is varnish which it was originally believe i just got done sanding one some A hole painted on top of varnish/finish 3 coats was like a rubber coating on chair was horrific & disgraceful to destroy a beautiful piece of hand craftsmanship with paint & pple dnt even sand it down first & act like they did something special lazy AF
