    You're so right, I didn't bother prepping our kitchen chairs. I painted over the glossy paint with chalk paint. They lasted a year and are chipped to the point where even my husband complained. Thanks for the information.

      For some reason people are telling others that chalk paint will stick to a greased pig...and it is not true. Some prep is required.

    What kind of an air compressor do I use for the paint sprayer, and which sprayer did you use.. thanks

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m using a 20 gallon Husky sprayer from Home Depot. Ideally you want a bigger compressor (so you don’t have to constantly wait for it to recover), but for small projects it works fine. I’ve even sprayed kitchen cabinets using it.

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thank you for sharing this. I am about to start a similar project but I do not have a sprayer. What would be my other options? In the list of tools listed at Homedepot, none of the links shows the hose and what it is connect to or spraying with. Help please

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First off, thank you for watching. The stayer setup I’m using is not unique by any means but some would consider it expensive. The air hose and spray gun are from my days painting cars in my younger years. You can buy the hose and a spray gun at harbor freight for cheap...there are tons of videos about the purple spray gun from harbor freight. The compressor I’m using is a husky (Home Depot) 20 gallon upright compressor.
      Other options would be brushing the piece(s)...but for me that is too time consuming and labor intensive. You can also use a Graco hand held sprayer (I use it in another of my videos).
      Let me know how your project turns out

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO

      You would want something with a hard finish. I imagine you could use Emerald from Sherwin Williams or a furniture paint (they have some options on the shelf at most big box stores). I’ve even used regular latex paint top coated with water based polyurethane and it worked well.

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, so I’ve painted several cabinets. The key to any project is preparation. I’ve used this same technique on my daughters bathroom vanity with great success. First and foremost you must make sure the cabinets are clean and free from grease. Then I still recommend a light scuffing, a good primer, and then a quality paint.

  • @DanniMunro
    @DanniMunro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How have they held up? I’m doing exactly this, using all your recommendations, just minus sprayer (brush) but will be spraying the water based poly (bought that in spray paint cans) to finish off! Please let me know if ud recommend anything diff than what’s in this vid, based on 3 years of wear? Thx!!!! Just subscribed!

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just sprayed these this last year. Also, they are in our formal dining room so they don’t get used and abused too much. However, I recommend this finishing technique along with the recommended # of coats of water based poly to achieve max protection. Additionally you may decide to top coat the primer with a paint and then coat with poly.

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine is an old sprayer I bought many years ago when I was painting cars. Harbor freight has a good one (it is purple colored). Just make sure you clean the paint gun really well and remove any of the oils left over from manufacture.
      The paint gun I have, has a 1.7mm spray tip. It works well but having a bit bigger tip would help when spraying thicker paints (it works perfect when spraying the BIN primer which is thinner)

    • @lukepearson3368
      @lukepearson3368 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you have to put any thinner in the sprayer with the paint? Or just a bigger tip?

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      For this type of sprayer yes. However Graco makes a hand held airless sprayer that I love for small projects. amzn.to/3yU6V2I
      They also make a hvlp sprayer that looks similar to this that comes with its own turbine…but it can be an expensive investment for just a small job.

    There are some stains and knots that will bleed through any primer... however, they usually will not bleed through shellac. Prep is painful no matter what, but nothing will infuriate you more than prepping and painting only to have to duplicate the work.

    • @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO
      @TonyCollumtheHOWTOHERO  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are correct. The primer used in this video is a shellac based primer for that very reason. I’ve used it on raw pine with bad knots and had it work perfect. I always say prep prep prep.
      I actually edited out some audio where I told my wife we teach people the right way to do things on this channel...that is why I gave the disclaimer that she was the boss and wanted it done.
