Spray paint works really well with rocking chairs and it's so much faster. I wanted to use a paint sprayer and have had good results with the products I used. You could definitely try Valspar if that is your favorite. Good luck!
This has worked really well for me and is a great way to avoid build-up and paint drips. But, if up and down works best for you, definitely stick with that.

How many cans did you use?
You will need at least one can per chair depending on the size of your chair.

Are you using gloss or semi gloss?
I actually used a satin finish for the rocking chairs.
You sure waste a lot of paint going side to side. Go up and down with the slats.
