BEST MANGO? .. Indian Kesar vs. Mexican Ataulfo!! Which has the Best Taste, Texture & Juiciness?

  • Mangoes are my favorite fruit!! I mean, just look: it is in my damn logo!! Today in New York City, we are going to compare the Kesar Mango from India and the Ataulfo Mango from Mexico.
    What most people don't realize is that there are so many mango varieties in the world, arguably around 1,000 varieties. And they are grown in most tropical areas of the world now that are frost-free.
    India is the undisputed queen/king of mango production. About 40% in total and 283 different varietals. The Kesar comes from the Gujarat region of India in the Northwest.
    But other Asian nations; China, Thailand, Indonesia, and Pakistan are also giant producers and amongst the Top 6 producers in the world.
    Mexico is the only non-Asian nation in the Top 6 at #5 and produces about 10% of India's production, or about 4% of the world.
    However, most mangoes do not transport well, even within countries, and so to really try most mangoes you have to travel all the way to these places. And it is so worth it!!
    Both the Kesar and Ataulfo mangoes did travel to get here, but maybe because of the distance, the Kesar, which is harder to find (mainly Indian grocery stores specifically during Indian mango season) vs. Ataulfo (which street carts and places like Wholefoods carry), the Kesar here is far more expensive.
    Generally the Kesar Mango is $3-5 ea. (or can be more) vs. the Ataulfo which is $1-2 ea.
    Watch and see which ends up being my favorite!
    SPOILER: I LOVE them both, though!!

      Hi there! Thanks for watching! I'm not sure if ataulfo mangoes can be found in the U.K. The ones I have available here in the U.S. are grown in Mexico. But to be honest, while ataulfo mangoes are delicious, they are nowhere as complex and rich in flavor as the Indian mango varieties I had!!!!! India has the best mangoes in the world!!

    Mango has always been my favorite fruit since childhood. I'm Indian born in North America, so I've only ever tried the two most readily available mangoes here - Ataulfo and Alphonso. They both taste good, but despite being Indian I've always liked the Mexican mango's taste better and it's the only one I can even eat because Alphonso gives me a kind of unpleasant allergic reaction. I found out there's so many kinds of Indian mangoes, so I'm looking for one similar to Ataulfo, or at least doesn't have the same protein I'm allergic to. Kesar at least looks similar and it sounds delicious... if I can find it, I'll try it for sure.

      @YvonnemeetsFood  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Auntie Annie and Uncle Philip! Haha, that is a hard question. The ataulfo, as much as I love it and am used to eating it here in the States, would sadly come last - the flavor is delicious and simple, but just one dimensional relatively speaking. With the Alphonso and Banganapalli, I loved them so much when I had them many times in India two years ago, but cannot remember how they compare in taste with the Kesar, as this video was my first time ever having a Kesar. All three, for me, are extremely complex and layered in flavors, and though it doesn’t answer your question, I’d have to have these three side by side to do a true comparison and ranking. 🤗 which one is your fave and why? I’d love to hear!

I do like it for sure but it would be in third place! And- I don’t think I’ve ever had a Kesar! Or if I did, did not know that’s what it was! ( Btw, it’s Aunty Annie always. Very heavily two mango species are largely used & both are very famous..
    One is kesar from Gujrat,junagadh
    Second one is Alphonso (hapoos)
    From Maharashtra,devgiri,ratnagiri
    Both mangoes species have very delicious taste,texture,colour & very usable on large scale because production are so high.
    Other mango species are

      The Ataulfo Mango is an invention of a Mexican engineer, in 1963 he experimented with different grafts on his mango trees.
      This fruit is characterized by a sweet and refreshing flavor.
      Its average composition is 69% pulp, 19% shell and 8.5% bone or seed. It is one of the favorite mangoes due to the large amount of pulp that is obtained from just one of its fruits.
      It is not a descendant, it is a product invented from experimentation

    Mexican mangoes no comparison to Indian or Pakistani mangoes

  • @agriperma
    @agriperma 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Post cultivation has a lot to do with the quality of mango, most mangoes you buy in supermarkets would be very good, if you were to pick them ripe off the tree in Mexico or whatever country they were grown in, sadly this is not the case, an Ataulfo ( aka honey, aka champagne ) is picked green at least 1 week away from being ripe, supermarkets, will often refrigerate them, to slow down the ripening process, so they can sell them before they go bad.
    On top of this, the USDA, requires that many mangoes from other countries go through hydro-thermal treatment, to prevent pest from entering the US, this is done by basically cooking the mangoes for 10-15 minutes.
    Kesar is an excellent mango, but I am not totally convinced, the mango eaten in this video is a Kesar, Kesar basically means saffron, and the flesh is much darker, also, the fruit has a pronounced little pointed "beak" on the bottom, and also the skin usually do not get that yellow on the outside when ripe, all the Kesar I have had, if they get that yellow, are already past their prime, one more thing I noticed is that the seed in this video seemed to have fibers, the Kesar I have eaten are completely fibreless.
    That being said, It is probably another excellent Indian variety, most Indian mangoes have that "spiciness" and rich complexity, which will differentiate them from your basic supermarket varieties in the US.
    The good news is that excellent flavored, complex, fiberless varieties do exist in the US. the bad news, is you won't find them in supermarkets, Florida is definitely mango central in the US. I grow 4 varieties, and still buy other varieties from other growers, mango probably has the greatest variation of flavors in a fruit, some people have dozens of named varieties, just for the broad range, of flavors, and textures, you can find some nurseries that sell boxed fruit to most of the country, now that we are in mango season, take advantage.

      @YvonnemeetsFood  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for educating me on this! I have no idea if the mango I had was really kesar, as the shop owner told me it was. It was still delicious and so much more multi faceted than an Ataulfo!

    • @agriperma
      @agriperma 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YvonnemeetsFood Yes Ataulfo is just sweet, another like that is Nam Doc Mai, very sweet, honey/floral but not very complex, most Indian varieties I have tried, have that complex flavor profile, if you can try the Mallika, that one is good too. Thailand has mango called Maha Chanook, very complex. so many good mangoes out in the world.
      I am still trying to taste new varieties, last year I was much impressed with some US bred varieties, "Sugar loaf" which has a coconut flavor component to it, "Orange essence", this one taste like mangoes with orange, "Super Alphonso" spicy like an Indian mango, and a few more.
