    Was working construction on a highway in queens NY hated it watched one of your videos. Started to take steps to leave took about 5 years but finally made it. Just started a little chicken flock moved from the city live in a semi rural area in the south. Love it thanks Becky you were a inspiration.

    I just mixed my own feed today and added this in! Whole corn, whole oats, alfalfa pellet, black oil sunflower seed, flax seed, and a 30% game bird feed, all equal parts, sprinkled with diatomaceous earth it’s about an 18% protein feed for my girls

    I've been following you for a year...best site for raising chickens....I've had extraordinary success...started with 5 bought online, was gifted 5 hens...a momma hatched 8 of 12 and same momma just hatched 3 of 6..great momma....Big huge beautiful roo....his son is a banti..no biggie...they are still making their way..so far so good...I have been buying up your recommendations for winter food...bought trash cans and everything you stated...here in Missouri, USA...my coop is a two car garage..just saying..fortunate me...the diatamasha (SP?) earth got rid of the fleas that come in with alfalfa bails etc...I could walk in coop and my ankles were bit by things(insects) i couldn't see..I spread the dia earth everywhere and no more bites..happy me..happy chickens..my chickens roam on 10 acres..free range seems best for me..so far, so good, one year later, have not lost one to predators etc..I am thinkng, I could take on some rescue chickens or birds...what do you suppose? by the way, had no idea about oats..my chickens are like kardashians..spoiied rotten..I boil their eggs and feed them back..I raise food and corn and sunflower seeds and spoil them rotten..I boil spaghetti noodles..I am an idiot..lol..trying to cut my costs down..have been buying 2 dollar cantelope and 8 dollars of blueberries per week... hubby says it costs us 500 a month because I spoil them..they are my pets...any solutions? thank you...

    It's important that you get Food Grade DE because there is one that you put in your pool to clean. All animals can be feed it and you can also dust dogs and other animals to rid them of fleas, ticks, etc. DE is tiny shell fractures that will cut up the exoskeleton of bugs and dehydrate them. Same goes for sprinkling it in your garden for bugs.

    Seeing poop on eggs is not a fool proof way to check for worms. It depends on where the chickens are laying, if they share a nesting box, if the nesting box is clean, etc. Having said that, it's a pretty good idea to scatter some DE around the coop or add to the dust bath a few times a year as a preventative.

    I'm about to get a couple of chickens... I was wondering, what kind of parasites do chickens get? I know when I use DE for cats it doesn't work for all types of worms, like tapeworm... I add pumpkin seeds to the deworming protocol. I assume they would also work for chickens?
    Q2... cat food is not even good for cats... what's the purpose of feeding it to chickens? I'm concerned about anything over processed being given to my animals, especially when they will produce eggs that I will eat later.

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DE does work on all worms at every stage. If you feed it properly and long enough it works perfect. Not all cat food is bad. If you turn into a nitpicker, everything is bad. A healthy system be it person or animal can handle things that are not "perfect". ☀️❤️☀️

      I looked through a lot of cat food and there were a couple that looked decent but very expensive. You didn't explain why would chickens need cat food... I saw you feeding purina in one of other episodes and that's an absolute garbage. It contains a lot of GMO corn with lots of glyphosate that comes with that. I just never saw a cat grazing on corn so I refuse to feed it to my pets. It is also processed at ultra high temperatures to kill the pathogens from dead farm animals, roadkill, even euthanized animals with toxic euthanasia drugs end up in pet food. I don't know about you but I don't want these things to end up in my eggs. I want to keep chickens to have the healthiest food possible.

    • @BeckysHomestead
      @BeckysHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once it is to adult stages no, but gape worms have quite a journey to get to end stage. You need to keep your coop dry, dry, dry. Clean it out good, sprinkle the ground with DE then add thick sand 4 to 6 inches deep. Don't over crowd the coop!!! Then start on the Deworming like I said in the video. Prevention is the key☀️❤️☀️

  • @busybunnyhomestead
    @busybunnyhomestead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you have a young puppy or kitten they need to be dewormed with actual dewormer. They often get worm loads bad enough to kill them. And even if the worm load is not bad enough to kill them, they are young and growing , they will be robbed of their nutrition and blood, and will end up anemic, have malnutrition, and poor growth. It’s best to take them to the vet for a fecal test and be prescribed the dewormer to target the specific type of worm they have.

    Becky or any chicken lovers...help!!! My chickens were laying beautiful, dark, rich-colored orange eggs (yolks). But, then all of a sudden most all of them became a VERY pale yellow. I hadn't changed their diet. So, I wondered what in the wold happened. Then, I saw one of my hens poop out about a cup full of these ugly, long stringy worms! YUK!!!! So, I used ivermectin which I hated to do. But, I only dosed my older hens not my pullets. But then, I think my pullets had these teeney, rice-like worms. So, it had been a bit over a month since my older hens were dosed with ivermectin (which didn't really work at least I don't think so) Egg yolks were still pale yellow. So, now, they all got medicated with SafeGuard.....egg yolks still a pale yellow!!!! I haven't seen any worms in their droppings, though. So, what could be the deal???? Any suggestions? Thank you so much. I always try to do good by my chickies. They're such hard work, but so adorable to watch. And, my husband and I love "home grown" fresh eggs!

    You can also sprinkle diatomaceous earth where your chickens dust themselves. The diatomaceous earth will kill any mites in their feathers.

      Problems come when you over crowd and the coop is wet and dirty. Clean coop good. Sprinkle DE on the ground, then add bags and bags of sand. ☀️❤️☀️

    Becky, I’m so sad to say that I followed your instructions for using DE as dewormer for my chickens, my horses and my dog- I did everything you said to do, and all of my animals ended up with severe parasite loads. My horses had round worms and my chickens and dog had tape worms. They had them so badly that it was visible in all of their poop.
    After watching one of your older videos years ago on de worming with DE, i tried it last year with high hopes.
    I wanted so badly for the DE to prevent parasite loads in our animals, but it really did nothing at all.
    I did so much research on DE also and much of what I read said that once it is wet (which it would be in the gut/intestine of an animal) it can no longer kill the bugs/worms/parasites.
    So, I’m not sure how your animals are getting away with low parasite loads, but it must have had to do with a low amount of parasites on your previous property. 🤷🏻‍♀️

      Also, food grains, pellets etc, often have mites. It is safe to say that de in their food can kill off pests they may consume. Also DE is a neutralizer. If your body is balanced, it would make it difficult for intestinal worms to thrive and multiply in its host.

      @@stephanieschultz3394 I’m confused- you are claiming that DE does work? Why did you start your comment with “also” ?

    • @stephanieschultz3394
      @stephanieschultz3394 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, De works. It's best to use after a chemical deworming to keep the parasites and worms. Not sure what happened to my previous post. It had a scholarly article link. Maybe it was taken down?

    Having poop on eggs does NOT mean your chickens have worms! The eggs come out of the same hole the poop does, so having poop stains on them is not uncommon. Please don't give false information.

      You obviously know way to much to be watching videos then (Why are you here then) or you just don’t actually have chickens. All animals need wormed every once in a while in their life time.
