Hi Becky! I am a new subscriber and I really admire you and love learning from your videos. I am 68, have cancer and am bedridden but sweetie, you have made me want chickens! I promise if I'm ever well enough, I will only get two at first and I will be ready for them before I get them. But after that, the ONLY thing I promise is to try to take excellent care of them and make them HAPPY CHICKENS!!!
Hey Becky all love from South Africa 🇿🇦 thanks to you I now have 45 black Australorp Hens that lay eggs everyday now I can be able to sell the eggs to my community...I’m always on your channel learning more you inspired me to start Poultry farm
I never realized there were different temperments in chicken breeds (like dog breeds). My grandparents were farmers & they only kept one breed of chicken, the Leghorns, in a large coop. Their neighbor only raised Australorps, a large black flock that free ranged. Maybe this helps to explain why. It's sad that those old farmers are gone now & their amazing knowledge too. Thanks for keeping alive the farming tradition of passing on the knowledge & experience - especially when it comes to the animals! 💚👍👍
@@besi6410 Sorry, I'm not understanding what you are saying. I'm sorry for your loss, but why would you leave the door open? Wouldn't predators get in? I'm not criticizing, I'm just confused. Have a great day!
Hello Becky. Always ton of good advice for children owners. Thanks for that. Your homestead looks great. You love your animals and provide good shelter. Be well.
I’ve been building my mothers new she hen coop since April not done yet. Working on digging the 1 ft x 1 ft mote around the whole coop, to drop in wire to prevent digging predators from entry under fence.
Thanks for all the chicken advice. I've grown chickens for years but we renovated our barn last year to house farm equipment and we are planning to build a separate chicken coop soon. I've been a fan of yours for years. Also I tried several of your recipes and they all turned out great. Becky's country bumpkin brownies are a fav in my house. 😁
I have 2 speckled sussex hens and 3 silkies... they do good together for the most part 🙂 they love their fermented scratch and their layer crumble mixed with yogurt, seaweed and a few striker pellets (to control parasites). There is definitely a learning curve with chickens but it's worth it!
My chicken feeder is 6 inches off the ground and mice get in there all the time, fortunately, sometimes my chickens can catch the mice and eat them. But they are usually out at night. You’d be surprised on how far mice can jump. They can jump 13 inches.
Hello Becky. We have one hen that doesn't lay and when she does the shell is soft. We are feeding your mixture of food plus 15% Laymore mash. We have 5 hens and one rooster. The hens are a year old. We also give them oyster shell and DE is in the feed.
That is a young hen. I would try feeding her a little meat every day in the morning. I have had a few hens take a little longer to mature, so just make sure to throw the crushed oyster shells in their run (lots of them) and feed the meat in the am. ☀️❤️☀️
She is not a pullet anymore. I get so happy when they start laying. Don't forget, they need crushed oyster shells all the times now. I just throw it in their run and they get it when they need it☀️❤️☀️
@@BeckysHomestead Oops! I thought she was a pullet as she is only 6 months old:) And I always give them boiled eggs (oyster shells are no where to be found for Covid in my area)
Dear Becky I'm trying to eliminate soy from my ladies diet, I been mixing 1 part of organic chicken scratch with 1 part of black oil sunflower seeds and their egg production is very good. I also provide grit , oyster shell free choice . Not to mention my chicken are free range. Thank you for your wonderful videos.
I am very fortunate that I have only lost one chicken to a fox as I have had 5 attacks where 2 got bitten and survived and also I have had countless hawk attacks all while free ranging. My chickens are very lucky
Hey Becky we just recently got three backyard Isa brown 12 month old hens and we aren’t getting 3 eggs a day. What do you recommend to get them to lay each day. Thanks for all your videos they are very helpful!!
What type of feed do you recommend to feed hens that only one has started laying so far of a flock of 7 hens? The person I bought them from said he thought they were about 4 to 5 months old. I have a Golden Laced Wyndotte, Americauna (she has laid 2 eggs in 2 days so far), Easter Egger, Black Cochin Bantam, 2 White Silkies and 1 Buff Silkie. They are all rescues and so much more happier at their new home but I want to get them the very best organic feed that will keep them healthy and laying lots. I have done a lot of research and there is so much information out there it's a lot to take in. Thanks for your help.
Hey Becky My chickens are only 3 yrs old, but only laying 2 eggs but I have 6 hens. I have buff Orpingtons, and other breeds. They have many egg laying years left, do you have any suggestions on how to get them laying again? Or why they aren’t. I give them grit, oyster shells, 16% feed, everything that the internet says. If anyone else in the comments had any ideas, I’m open!! Thanks!!
I’ve just started a flock with five hens. We are currently considering once we have our system completely set up and comfortable, as you say, I’m interested in finding a few heritage breeds and propagating them. I like the “sweet” personality do you know of any critical heritage breeds with this type of personality?
I need help! I just finished making a chicken coop. My problem is they won't go in it a night, they prefer my cyclone fence! How do I get them to go in?
Not sure you’ve been asked this yet. How do you handle and tame your birds? Do you handle them every day when babies? I want mine to be friendly and easily handled in case of injuries or they need medical treatment. Could you show us?
I never pick up my chickens, but they follow me everywhere. If I need to pick one up, I will kind of trap it in a corner and pick it up. I don't make a big deal about it.☀️❤️☀️
The thing that is hard to figure out is having young chickens and older chickens because I have back yard chickens and the older ones eat the chick starter instead of their food.
Hi i have new adult chicken so what feed i can make for them and can u tell me the tips and ligt set up ,egglaying setup ,how to gove food for 2 chickens plz tell from india
I started my chickens with oyster shell grit but there is now a supply shortage in all the stores anywhere near me. The substitute they gave me was calcium carbonate. Is this what you would recommend? My girls are all still quite young. They started laying at 16 weeks and are now almost 21 weeks. I have fed them what you recommend and they love it and have been very healthy with no issues so far. I have your book but I obviously didn’t watch the chicken math video. 1 per person. 🤦🏻♀️ I started with 34. 7 different breeds. I promise I am a very attentive chicken mama so I hope to avoid issues that you were concerned about. I made sure I was very prepared but I didn’t think of supply shortages 🤦🏻♀️ I’m getting about 19 eggs per day the last couple days but not everyone is laying yet. Any advice? Is there something others than oyster shell that would be better that calcium carbonate?
I let my hens out of chicken tractor in the day time and unfortunately something got 1 of them this week. So I am keeping them in their tractor all the time. I hope that's o k.
Electric poultry net can allow your girls to forage, peck and run around all day. Nothing living tests the fence twice. Every predator learns to respect the fence.
My broody black austrolorp is upsetting the coup .she stays in the nest box disrupting the laying patterns so I only get maybe one or two eggs a day. I don't think she's laying either. She comes out to an drink and then goes an sits on someone else egg in there.
Hello, I have been watching your video's trying to learn and figure all of this out. Do you have a e mail or a way of communicating with you. Because I have a few questions because I am a beginner with this whole process.
My coop is unhappy. I had 7 chickens and thought I'd try my hand at the incubator. I expected a low turnout, but 14 healthy chicks hatched!🤪 Now, I will have to choose which ones must go. I feel so irresponsible, but I wanted to know I could keep a food supply, with all the craziness in this world. 😔
If you are not in a terribly cold climate you could build that coop that Becky has or a hoop coop. They care inexpensive. Then if you can afford to raise them up a bit you can get good money for a 16 week old pullet. I've seen them for sale by me for $75 a pullet. As far as rooster are concerned I haven't looked into that because I can't raise them where I live.
@@BeckysHomestead I appreciate your advice. Yes, he does a side walk/tipping dance. He also charges at them and pins them down. My guess is he wants to mate but my girls are not laying eggs yet and want no part of his antics (they screech). Thanks again!
How to make ur chickens happy? Create a paradise for them. My paradise includes fresh water daily.....fresh food measured in quantities and spread out to prevent fighting....native plants that provide protection via thorny bushes and plenty of shade and micro climates for cooling off....shrubs dead wood native shrubs and tress that produce berries for a more natural forage while they free range.....correct roo to hen ratio.....however im going to suggest something taboo.....im so sorry but if a beautiful majestic bird of manages to snatch one of my chickens its ok....im glad to give back to nature so make sure you use incubators to keep your flock numbers up. I know the last part is gonna be insane to some but I love nature
