I love this video, so chock full of good info! Can I use something other than cedar chips for the chicks, cause the smell of cedar chips is so strong it takes my breath and I wouldn't want the chicks to breathe it either. What do you recommend I use instead?
helpful as always becky, you inspired me to start living simple and now i have my own lot of good land and i'm growing my own garden and raising my own chickens, life is good
I've read that cedar wood shavings are not a good option for chick bedding. Cedar is far to aromatic for the chicks immature lungs and can cause respiratory distress. Pine shavings would be a better option. Hope this helps someone out.
Werr getting our first batch of chicks next week, we stopped by the feed store to get all our items for them yesterday and my kids got to hold the baby chicks, this morning my three year old woke up talking about how much she loved the baby chicks yesterday. Makes me even more excited for our little chickens to come!
This was an EXCELLENT video primer! Thank you for returning to the subject of chickens, and placing everything we need to know to get started in one convenient video. Definitely one to save to my hard drive! Also, may I suggest you consider producing an updated version of an earlier video, where you described the different breeds of chickens? I would be interested in any insights and experience you gained since making that video.
I thank God I found this channel, I have been finding it very difficult to start raising layers, but now I see I don't need anything expensive, it's easy simple. South Africa
Hello there, Your videos have been some of the most helpful and inspirational of the entire world wide web. We are starting out and looking forward to a future filled with chickens. Your energy and enthusiasm is absolute. Thank you.
This is a nice video! I do love collecting eggs as well. Over time the eggs can load up to a lot of money in a store but with chickens, they can be more expensive because, you have to keep providing food and I’m already &1000 Into six chickens. Becky, you have a very very good point though because the eggs you buy at the store can add up to the same amount you paid for your chickens. You have helped me also save a lot of money. Thanks for teaching me how to raise baby chickens properly, and teaching me the ways to spoil my chickens!!
Your videos have been a big help to me. I really enjoy the detailed, practical information from someone who obviously know what she is talking about. I am about to buy my first chickens and you have saved me so much time and trouble. Thank you.
Thank you so very much- great video! We purchased seven chickens last year, lost three to unknown reasons and just bought eight chicks and two ducklings... We are very new to this and very exciting to live homestead lifestyle. Thanks for your beautifully done video!!!!!!
Hi Becky ,I really loved your videos especially the first parts of the bodies,I had got my chicks yesterday they are just 2 days old but I already have a 1 month old chicken so all my chicks are happy and a big thanks.to you ma'am 😊
These videos are amazing. So much information and well presented. You should do seminars at events. I took a back yard chicken course in Orlando and none of this good information you have was presented.
Becky u r wonderful! I was brought up in kenya on farm with chickens, duck and ducklings, goats and cows. As a family we did farming too. I miss pure organic foods. I always love to watch ur videos and I enjoy alot. Am very much interested in homesteading if only I can have my own property. I can not be happier to live and do as u do homesteading. Pray for me that God gives me money to buy my own. Be blsd!
I love my silkies. I live in Louisiana. I'm trying to get my year old rooster to mate with an older hen. It's been a week, zero eggs. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated
When i was a kid my mom would buy two baby chicks for us and we had to care for them. We use to put them in a tub and at night only we use to place a bottle with hot water in to keep them warm. They were just fine and cozy. We never lost any. Now days there are so many things that stores recommend! I believe chicks do get climatized into weather temps. If too cold give some extra heat but i think they will be just fine in warmer parts of the country. As with everything, the more we baby animals, the less strong they become. Thank you for all the info you provide. So helpful! Don’t you have problems with predators in your area? I notice your coop is completely open and can’t lock chickens in, or the run doesn’t have a net on top.
Heyyyy, as someone who's kept reptiles: that weird looking heat 'lamp' is actually a ceramic heat bulb. Just to save you guys some search trouble. They're excellent at maintaining heat without the same light effects and tend to be slightly more fire-safe.
Got 17 chickens to raise for my own organic eggs because I don't wish to support factory farming egg industry and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. My chickens are my babies. I had no idea what wonderful pets they are. I've had them 8 months now and loving them so much. My one hen went broody so I saved a few eggs for her to sit on and looking forward to our second generation chicks. (We have 4 roosters, all such sweethearts). I miss when my babies were teeny little chirps but probably getting more breeds next year that I really want.
Becky, you have been looking so pretty lately!!! -such a difference from when you first started your channel. (not that you weren't cute). You just look like you have lost so much weight, have a different hair color/style, and nice make up look. You just really look great! You look like you are happy and that may also contribute to your new look. On another note, I personally love your friendly voice. It is so sweet. lol Ps. I so appreciate your channel. I learn so much (great content) and you are very entertaining. I just really enjoy your channel... I figured it would be nice to give you props and compliments since it's important you know how appreciated you are since it is obvious you work quite hard to produce content to help others. So thanks again love. GOD BLESS YOU!! xoxo
I really enjoy your tips, hints, and advice on Chickens. I already had subscribed and put notifications on because you are awesome. Excellent outdoor presentation! Thank you for sharing.
I'm not sure about other areas, however there is a certain breed of Rooster that doesn't crow. They have been gaining popularity around the area I live.
When I was working for a nursery school in the 80s, we visited a lady who had a few chickens and a lot of goats. She sold the goat's milk for people who couldn't drink cow's milk. She had a smaller yard than we had in our house in the suburbs.
This is such a helpful video, and you are so fun to watch. Your enthusiasm is contagious! Thank you! 😊 Links to recommend products would help. I just found the heat bulb and thermostat you recommended, and I'm returning the radiant heater I bought. Your recommendation is cheaper and better!
Been thinking about having some chickens, your vids are GREAT! I guess a guy can start smaller with 5 or 6 and go up from there! As long as the coop is big enough. Glad I found your vids!
When my hens were babies I didn't use a thermometer thing or sand.I used a regular bulb for the lamp.I cleaned out and old candle glass and used that for their water. I think I saved ALOT of money.
Hi we live in the urban country so only way to get chicken/chicks is from the spinning thing to win a pet so that where our chicken is from but she still Lay’s eggs that are fresh also ty for the help on what they eat we have bean feeding them just whole corn before
Hey Becky, love your videos there so informative but fun to watch, have you ever thought of doing like a DVD on how to raise chickens? I'd defiantly buy it, you cover most of it in your previous videos but would love a guide from start to finish, thanks for another great video :)
This is the most informative video by far!! I’m planning to have a couple of hens for my backyard and have watched dozens of videos but still struggling with how to start, and now finally got really helpful ideas from this video! Thank you very much🤗
I have 1 light brahama hen and a cuckoo maran or bared rock hard to tell and 2 isa browns and one red ranger rooster and 1 Hampshire red it's so awesome and they all get along well
That was an excellent video to explain chicken care. I really thought it will help beginner homesteaders. Can you do a video like this about some of your other animals too, like the guinea hen or the horses?
I am only a eight year old and its hard to make me cry but it's pretty easy to make me sad and its correct that you said that children will feed the chickens and I really want a pet chick or even a chicken
Medicated chick starter isn't a bad thing. It's not chock full of antibiotics and whatever else people think. It simply contains coccidiostats which is a microbe that inhibit the development of coccidiosis (also called "pasty butt"), which is the leading cause of death in chicks. If your chicks have not already been vaccinated for coccidia before you get them, it is a good idea to use medicated chick starter, especially in a hot and humid environment.
Thanks for a very informative video. I just found out that hens can lay eggs w/o a rooster ! So it would be practical to have chickens in the backyard, as long as the law allows it. Well, I might just do that, because I love chickens. I even have a bumper sticker stuck to the side of my fridge that says just that. I bought it some years ago when they still had "The Chicken Store" in Key West. Key West has lots of chickens that run around loose and at one time they had to pay a guy I knew to catch them so they could be shipped upstate because the people were complaining about the roosters making too much noise.
Becky Sunshine I just love you so much! Your videos are really incredible and I am learning so much every single day from you. I wish you were my neighbor! Do you ever think you’ll move to Texas?!!!
Love your videos! I need help with my 9 Brown Leghorn chickens that are 21 weeks old, just started laying 15 eggs so far, Yeah! Eggs yolks are that beautiful orange color and shells are really thick and strong! Bedding is fresh straw, then hay on top. I provided them a temporary dusting box with sand, DE, peat moss and wood ashes more than a week ago. Did I do that too late! But i think they are afflicted with Mites...Loosing feathers just above the tail! I had them all in an 8' x 12' chicken run until yesterday when I added on a 12' x 20' run for them during the day. At first, I thought it was just the two bigger hens pecking on the others. Free range not an option! Too many raccoons, owls, vultures, hawks, etc. How best can help them recover from these mites? And, will the feathers grow back when mites are under control?
+connie c you had them over crowed the first 5 months. Over crowding causes a lot of problems. Sprinkle DE in the whole coop and dust the hens once a week for a month. Keep the coop clean and see how that goes.
Thank you for your expertise! I've used DE in temporary dusting box but not the whole coop! I'll do that now! They love that extra run I just built for them! got 5 eggs more eggs that same day I let them out in the new run! They are much happier now! Thanks for your help! I appreciate you and your quick response!
I used to have chickens back when I was younger and I had hens who laid plenty of eggs as a way to prevent the population from exploding to an unsustainable amount, I would gather 80% of the eggs, around 5 or 6 out of a batch of 8 or 9 and leave a couple of eggs under the mother to hatch and the ones I gathered tend to be put into the fridge or my breakfast omelets.

Hey Becky what’s up I am looking at buying a horse and I was wondering if I should feed a round bale of hay or a square bale of hay what do you use thx
I hope you enjoy this new video. Ask your questions here and I'll answer as many as I can.
my chichens are are eating there eggs and I do not know what to do

+Danny Urrutia make sure they have enough food, maybe add a little while corn and grit
thanks I will ask to get that thanks so much
I love this video, so chock full of good info! Can I use something other than cedar chips for the chicks, cause the smell of cedar chips is so strong it takes my breath and I wouldn't want the chicks to breathe it either. What do you recommend I use instead?
Your explanations make me so calm and happy
helpful as always becky, you inspired me to start living simple and now i have my own lot of good land and i'm growing my own garden and raising my own chickens, life is good
My goals! Chicken coop, next!
Hows it going so far?
I've read that cedar wood shavings are not a good option for chick bedding. Cedar is far to aromatic for the chicks immature lungs and can cause respiratory distress. Pine shavings would be a better option. Hope this helps someone out.
+Duckhead Homestead here's what the usda has to say about cedar plants.usda.gov/plantguide/pdf/cs_juvi.pdf
Duckhead Homestead You're correct, cedar shavings are highly irritating to chicks. Stick with pine.
Duckhead Homestead same
Duckhead Homestead yes I heard that too
Danielle’s Duckhead Homestead ya stick with pine

You are still enthusiastic about your life on the homestead, so refreshing.

2:46 depends on store. my local feed store sells straight run, but the majority are hens.
These videos are amazing. So much information and well presented. You should do seminars at events. I took a back yard chicken course in Orlando and none of this good information you have was presented.

Becky u remind me so much of my grandma she used to raise chickens for their eggs

I was raised on a farm..and I didn't know all this stuff! Thanks!!
Happened on the one when she was building her cabin, four shows later wow! what all she's accomplished!!! Very inspiring 💕

I love becky's homestead video from jekkie I live at the back of Masonic
I am only a eight year old and its hard to make me cry but it's pretty easy to make me sad and its correct that you said that children will feed the chickens and I really want a pet chick or even a chicken
Plus what chicken's eats
Me encanta toda la información que proporciona!!!muchas gracias 😊
your videos are always best... 👍
What breed are the chicks in 1:08. I have a chick that looks just like that and I can’t figure out the breed. Looks like a silver Amerucana
I've never heard of that, when I raised my chicks we used organic food and they're fine now.
My chicly babies are 3 my Nyah’s old and doing great.✌️👍🇨🇦
Thanks for a very informative video.
Becky is an icon
I accasionally let one of my hens in the house, to play with my 1 year old brother and my dog. Goldie thinks she's a dog.

Hey Becky what’s up I am looking at buying a horse and I was wondering if I should feed a round bale of hay or a square bale of hay what do you use thx
Love your videos as always!!
Thanks for all the useful info!
I absolutely love chickens
