SoOOoo cute to see the chickens come over to see you at the end of the vid...they love you Sunshine Becky! It's a 'good' thing chickens don't know how to find you...because every chicken that is frustrated...would find your place and roost for life. THIS woman 'knows' how to raise chickens! Lovely vid and thanks 4 sharing your time/talents with us. I learn something new every time. Health and God Bless you my dear! :)

19 adult chickens will eat a lot. Remember different breeds have different temperaments. I group breeds into two groups temperament wise. The sweeties and the feisty's.

Thank you so much. I've learned almost everything I know about how to care and optimize thier laying. The meat or protein in thier diet is so important. I give mine meal worms. They are laying 5 eggs a day out of 10 hens even in teens and 20 degree weather. I even added heater coop panels to keep them extra comfy. Not to much heat just a nice place warm place to roost next too . They are healthy and happy thanks to me implementing the info you have shared.

Regarding meat. My seven coop bound hens get TWO CUPS of dried soldier fly larvae a day. Does that count?
I am seriously allergic to CORN and SOY. React to it in the eggs from chickens that eat it. My birds get rice instead. I supplement this with COOKED lentils (very high in protein) and olive oil (corn is very high in oil). The lentils are generally boiled to a mash in a pot with meat fats and tiny meat bits. They also get my left over meat (all grass fed). I also add nutritional yeast to the daily ration of lentils (never cook yeast) and ginger, mix the mess up with chopped cabbage, celery, bokchoi....
Chickens ARE picky. They reject uncooked lentils and peas.
Regarding stressed chickens ... My hens stopped breaking eggs when I removed the rooster and ate him for Thanksgiving. Or maybe HE was breaking the eggs -- he was the fattest bird I've ever cleaned! The coop got a LOT more friendly when he was gone, the girls acted as through they liked each other. Rooster had been pecking ONE hen. I isolated her until he was gone and she integrated back in the the society of hens without any problems. We have eggs, but the Buffs were slower in laying and less frequent this winter than the two year old white leghorns.
And the nesting boxes MUST be clean. They'll lay outside the box if it's gross.
Egg size -- the leghorns are now laying large eggs (some of them have double yolks), the Buffs (at a year) are finally laying medium eggs abut the Salmon Favorel is *known* for small eggs and these (at a year) are irregular. But she's got extra toes and feathered feet and a fluffy gorget around and below her hooked beak. She's sweet, smart and talkative. I don't mind the smaller eggs in this case.

My 8-mo old australorpes were fussing very loudly for a long time one day - very very excitedly. It happened that one of the young girls laid a H-U-G-E egg -- like 2-1/4 times their current "normal." It seems they pecked at it like it was a scary animal or something. They didn't break it, it just had a couple of little dents. It has not happened again and we don't want it to. It must have been painful, these gals are very young.
