Please remember, if you keep chickens and allow them to free range, you will get mites. Mites show up because wild birds use the same watering jugs, forage the same food, and simply visit your yard.
Also, if you have a wooden coop, chances are you have mites. The humidity and temperature changes cause the wood to form tiny crevasses that mites hide during the day.
Basically, if you get mites, you have not failed your flock in any way. You are not a bad chicken keeper. It simply happens to even the healthiest flock of chickens.
OK, now that I got that out of the way...clean the coop regularly and DE is your friend!

Becky, I’m literally smiling and holding back tears watching you hold your chicken .
I love it. Wish you were my next door neighbor! Started raising 4 chickens for 5 months now. First 4 were devoured at 10 weeks in coop by fox. Got 4 more, one died next day 3 left, one became a rooster.Traded out the rooster for a female (from same guy during rain storm,)didn’t notice poor chicks problem and having lots of trouble. (The two left want to peck her to pieces. )I think she has gapeworm as of today spitting water even if she had none. I’m panicked, so I looked symptom up and found you. Glad I did.
Thanks for the info. All along Using the DE for the coop, ACV water and even garlic for my girls. They seem very healthy. New chick is so much smaller ( supposed to be about same age) very docile and needs a lot of help. Wish me luck. Take care✌️thanks for the video!
The newbie came and looks like a rescue chicken with no tail and saddle feathers all pulled out! Now I see her spitting up. Anyway, I have my job cut out for me. ✌️🇺🇸

Great video. I've used DE for a year with my year-old flock of chickens. We live in like a jungled-over forest and we have all kinds of insects and parasites carried around by the wildlife behind our house. Using DE in their food and habitat has prevented any kind of parasitic and pest problem. I've ever only lost a couple chickens from a blocked crop, which I think they've mistakenly eaten some kind of stick or plastic. I've also powdered DE around my rabbit's enclosure and it's done wonderfully preventing mites while they live outdoors. Rabbits are way more prone to infestation. We've got ducks now, I love them way more than chickens. Although they can make their coop much messier and smellier. After every rain I powder their enclosure with DE, and it seems to also clear up the pungent smell by drying up the moisture on the ground and floor of the duck house, before I muck it all up to the compost and add fresh bedding in there and sprinkle DE again.

It will not cause cancer, it can cause silicosis. Might not notice the effects until 20 or 30 years but i doubt handling a bag a few times a year would cause it. The ones that should worry are the ones that handle it on a daily basses.

  • @tinab7791
    @tinab7791 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I've never actually heard the cancer risk thing with the de. People always tell me to stay away from it because you're not supposed to breathe it in and it can tear up your lungs. I haven't personally experienced that. I have a very chemically sensitive cat and we can't use flea meds or worm meds or anything with him, and it's the only thing that makes his life comfortable and livable.

Omg, my little Pomeranian had a horrible skin condition when she turned 6 years old with black spots on her skin and then she started losing her fur from the neck down. I took her to three different veterinarian and no one came up with why this was happening. For three years she suffered. I ended up thinking she had alopecia in which there is no cure. So I put this on her two times in four weeks. Her fur started growing back slowly and now she is a little fur ball. It was a miracle. Thank you for letting other people know how good this is for your animals. Also it will certainly get rid of fleas.

Just destroyed and rebuilt a chicken coop bc of mites... we had shingles not metal for the roof and when we were stripping it, the mites were literally EVERYWHERE. They were never out of the coop, and we would even but those bug bomb fumigator and they would just come back. It’s that bad.
We have lost so many chickens to mites and there is literally no way to get rid of them, just keep them in little numbers!
DE is literally a life saver! I use it much more than 2x a year bc mites are so bad here in the PNW.
Quick question: where do you get your de “boofer”?!? I NEED that thing!

DE also stops diarrhea but don’t use too much or your pets will get stopped up.
My 105 lb. Goldadore eats everything off the ground and sometimes leftovers from wildlife kills. He had an almost continual worm issue. How you tell is the loose stool will be mucus-y and possibly foamy or have a little blood if it’s bad. I started giving 1/2 tsp. DE with food every other day to prevent worm infestation in the dogs. Be sure to add some water or broth because the powder can get up their noses. If you feed kibble, be sure to give more liquid in the food than if you’re feeding fresh. If your dog has diarrhea for any reason, two doses back to back will usually stop it.
DE for squash bugs wasn’t very effective. I don’t know why.

I tried the dust, I use it in their coop. Personally I don't like using on them cuz they shake it all in my face and they kick and struggle. But if I hold them gently in the container with warm water, they like it and calm down.

I know rice is bad for smaller birds, thats why its illegal in most states to throw it at weddings. However, chickens are larger and their gizzards are larger. So it should not be as big of an issue. But, not too much. Amounts may matter. Hope this helps.

    Hi Becky!❤️
Thank you again for an amazing video! I have a question, is it okay to worm chickens if they never have been wormed before? They won’t have any reactions to that right? Also, we have been having mice issues in our coop. And all the mices have pooped in the chick feed. That sucks :( My flock has been eating that feed for weeks now, i however, saw it yesterday. Is it okay for them to eat it like that? Of course we will trow the feed away, but they have already eaten from it is that okay?😭

Label says DE does NOT work in a wet environment. It is a DESSICANT - used in Food Bags to kill pests during storage - it is not meant as a food additive for internal pests.

Please don’t use it, it’s a respiratory irritant for both birds and humans and it will not prevent or eradicate internal or external parasites on a bird.

Hi Becky! I am a newby to chicken keeping and have a question. If you have chickens together who are 5 months and 3 month old what feed are you providing for them? The older bunch are not laying just yet. Once they start laying what feed are you feeding?

Hi, I put it on a hen that’s broody sitting on her nest. I put it on her not in the nest. I noticed one of the chickens had lice and that’s why I put in their coop and on them. Would this hurt or kill the chicks inside the eggs?

We and animals can drink the food grade diatomaceous earth. For a human a spoon or a spoon and a half in 8 oz is good so yes, you can definitely add it on your animals water and food.

What is your feeling on Red Lake DE? I bought a HUGE bag of it at Rural King and was surprised it was RED when I opened it. I have been using it on the ground and in the coop for smell/bug control.

I used to take DE in capsule form. There are people who swear by taking it themselves! The only caveat is that it Hass to be food grade.
