Dropping a piggy is always one of my nightmares. Luckily it's only happened once and there were no injuries. Using a cuddle sack is a great idea, especially for children! And I know my emergency kit has saved me lots of time, money, and concern for both my piggies and house rabbits.

That actually had that happen to one of my piggies. She fell off a chair and she broke her leg right at the elbow. We had to have it amputated. Minus the missing limb she's thriving as if she has all 4.
Also we had to take her to a specialist not to long ago. She had masses under her neck, total of 5 I believe. Caused her not to eat, lost alot of weight. She was treated for a couple months and they are gone now. She's a little survivor.
Love watching your little piggies. ❤

You’re so right about holding them carefully and securely. Two of my girls don’t like being picked up and constantly try to launch themselves out of my hands. They’re so good at finding just the right spot to plant their feet then push with all their might.

Thanks for posting this. I took my Cinder to the vet and she was in a carrier. I put her on the counter and the carrier fell off the counter. She was rushed into the exam room and thankfully OK but scared. I was terrified and learned to place the carrier on the floor. You can never be too careful and I thought that I knew what I was doing. A scary reality check for me at the expense of sweet Cinder.

I had my best friends sons drop one of our piggies when it was small .. luckily the kid was short and she fell on a soft thick rug. He thought she was trying to bite him when she sniffed him. I felt so bad. I was right by him while he was sitting holding the piggie with one arm under and the other arm around its side.
After I checked her limbs and toes after and listened to her chest multiple times a day and watched her walking after ... she never showed any sign of limping or pain sounds and listened to her chest to make sure there wasn't a broken rib or anything. I was so relieved, but she got spoiled with treats and veg when checking her.

One of mine jumped out of his cage… I was freaking out, i immediately started bawling his cage is around 10inches off the floor. The nearest emergency vet that sees piggies is an hour and a half away… he doesn’t seem to be limping or anything… it’s been 5 hours. I definitely have cuddled him a lot since then. He’s eating and everything normally but I am still freaked out. Thank you so much for this video. I am going to keep a close eye on him for the next few days

this is one of my greatest fear. they can be so fast... when I read your title I thought : "first, don"t panick (because I would)", so it was a relief to hear you say that at the beginning. thank you ^^'.
I try to be seated as much as possible with them. none has ever fallen but it could happen. i'm not perfect and they can get spooked very easily.
before they are very close to me, I hold them the way Saskia does for their front paws (with one between two fingers). and I do as you advise, making also a sort of cup with my hand and wrist under their behind to both hold their back paws and prevent them from going backwards. they do know how to wiggle super fast their way back under your arm, don't they? :)
(it was a little more difficult for me, as a european, to find some products because pharmacies are the only places where you can get something that is not prescribed by a vet. I was refused an antifungal cream when I explained why I wanted one because "you should see this with the vet". it was just to already have it in my kit, I didn't need yet and should have said it was for me... thankfully, online pharmacies exist now.)

One of my guineapigs (Fish) when he was young would be perfectly calm being held but then would try to "leap" out of my hands back into his cage as soon as he was close. He was acting better for a few weeks but then caught me off guard by supermaning out of my hands after behaving for so long. Dropped about a foot and a half and was limping for 30 minutes. Turned out nothing was wrong but that scared the shit out of me. He's still going 6 years later but learned his lesson no more yeating out of my hands to get places.

I always got the family kids wanting to hold mine so i make them sit on the floor and i watch them, and show them to be gentle not to squeeze and no quick grabbing as if they're toys.. Sometimes my senior doesn't want to be bothered with kids so I'll tell them it's just as much fun to watch them in their enclosure, we don't always have to pet them on our lap.

I remember a few years ago when I was a new guinea pig owner (I was 28y old). I made the mistake of carrying 2 guinea pigs at once. My girl pancake began to squirm and I dropped her. I was so scared. I thought I had broken her neck (she held it at a weird angle). I was so lucky that within 24h she was back to normal but rightly so terrified of being picked up. I will now forever only carry one at once.

  • @addictedtoguitars4948
    @addictedtoguitars4948 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I've had a few times where they squirmed out of my hands as I was returning them to the cage, one was still high enough to knock her head a bit on the cage as she fell. My worst was one which, as she turned around, lost her footing and fell from the desk where she was, hit the computer, and from there down to the carpet. Watched her for a bit, and cuddled her. I was much more worried than she was.

I know I’m late to this but my Guinea pig just fell off my bed and hit some part of her (maybe even her head) on the cage. I was trying to catch her and then she flipped and hit herself on the cage. She seems okay but she was wiping her nose a lot after it happened. It wasn’t bleeding thank god but I’m scared whether this fall may have impacted her brain or head a bit. Not sure what I should do now other than watch her. I feel bad that I wasn’t able to catch her before she hit herself.

My daughter had a guinea pig when she was about 7 that somehow got a broken leg, I think she accidentally layed her head on her because she had gotten under her pillow and she didn't know it. Anyway she had a broken leg, the vet taped up the leg to stabilize it and then taped it to her body so she couldn't walk on it. It healed up really well and she lived a very long and happy life.

My boy Morty...well, I didn't drop him. He decided he could fly off the bed, so he took a leap and scared the living crap out of mama. 😂 He and I were both very shaken up but we kept an eye on him and ended up being 100% fine. We took him for a wellness exam soon after just to make sure he was all good and sure enough, he was totally fine, no issues. But needless to say, we keep a much closer eye on him now, especially when it looks like he's thinking about flying again.

One of my boys slipped and fell from the top tier of their hutch tonight. I was reaching in for his brother and the next thing I know, Diego is on the floor. It all happened so fast. He seems fine and was eating, walking, interacting just as normal, but when I checked him over he had a redish bruise on his lip and he didn’t like me checking his back legs too much - he wriggled and then felt as though he were vibrating when i held him after. They never like their legs touched though, especially the back ones. There are no obvious injuries, they felt as normal. I have booked him in at the vets Monday as I’d rather a professional check him over just in case and will keep a close eye that he continues behaving normally until then. Still, I’m worried sick and so upset! 🥺

We were trying to weigh her and she jumped off and landed on her feet (Thankfully it wasn't too high.) Then we basically had to chase her into a hidey. I was so worried that she was hurt but she's okay!

I had one of my piggies in a box and for some reason she got spooked and jumped out of the box and landed 75cm lower on the floor. And yes, I freaked out. And no I didn't wait to see if she was ok or not. I picked up my phone and called the vet right away. Luckely I have a good vet living in my street and 5 minutes later she was in for examination. There was nothing wrong with her, no wounds, no broken bones or other things. But yeah, that's me, better safe then sorry 😏 So even if you are very careful, this can happen 🙄
