Thank you Saskia, it's great to see how the expert does it.
Tim Long I’ve had my two piggies for over a year and they let me pet their heads a little, but run and chitter if I try touching them in any other way. This video seems to be what I’ve been looking for so hopefully this helps me out!

I encourage piggy parents to use a cuddle sack to collect the piggy from the cage. The piggy runs in, and you then scoop up pig & pouch. Pig feels safe within the confines of the cuddle sack, and you can start the handling process with them in the cuddle sack or transfer to a blanket/towel.
Lol I love your statement "They stick with the devil they know". It describes my skiddish girls exactly. At home they run away from me but when I take them to the vet they run from the vet to me. It's funny and cute at the same time. I say to them "Oh your not afraid of me now huh" as I so lovingly scoop them up in my arms.😍🥰💕😁
When one of my piggies is waiting for her dinner, all I have to do is put my hand on the floor palm up and she will jump on to it so I just lift her, lol she is adorable. She only does this when she is hungry tho, once I gave her dinner she will run if I want to pick her up. She is so used to me, she is turning 6 later this month I love my piggies so much.
Mine will only do that after we put them in our mobile potty box. When doing lap time, about every 20 min (sooner if they give the signals) we put them in the potty box and tell them to go potty. We wait for them to finish pooping and peeing then put our hands back in and ask if they are done, or if they want to go back to the cage. They will climb onto our hands for us to take them out of the potty box (a plastic tote box with guinea big paper bedding in it).
@@j_fizzle Thanks for asking. Trial & Error mixed with consistency. When they were younger we were always getting peed and pooped on, lol. (gotta love lap pads) I just started putting them in the box and talking to them in my 'piggie voice' lol saying/asking things like "does Elle have to go potty?" "go potty!" etc. I'd wait until after they go THEN pick them up and hold them for awhile. Starting out holding them for shorter periods and putting them back in the potty pox. I also would say things like "good job" or "yeah" after they go in the potty box before I pick them back up. It's very rare they pee or poop on us now. But I always put them in the potty box first to give them a chance to go before I hold them. Then keep an eye on time and any signs they have to go (wiggling, bitting, trying to get away, being vocal....specific signs that you will learn to recognize over time). We have 3 pigs. Each of them are different. One of them has a weaker bladder and has to go more often. Best wishes. Hope this was helpful!
Very educational, thank you. I like putting the piggie down backwards. One of my girls is a jumper when she’s heading back to the cage so I’ll try that. 😀
I really was blessed with my piggie. She’s so zen which is great bc she’s a class pet. Kids take turns holding her (in a pouch type thing) in their lap when they read. Not too many or for too long and they police each other very well. Or they can sit by her habitat and read. I have a standard cage for night but two habitats put together for day. I teach them a lot I’ve learned from you. Her and my bird are bonded. I literally had a parakeet fly up in my yard. 🤦♀️. Thankfully I had a huge cage from rehabbing a squirrel.

This is so helpful, I just adopted 2 Guinea pigs. One is 8 months, the other is about a year a half. Neither will let us anywhere near them, they’re terrified, and this is the first video I’ve found that tells me how to deal with that. I feel more confident now and not as scared of hurting them/myself as I was before.
My 2 girls are exact opposites. One is like Casanova and will come to the side of the cage and actually want to be picked up and cuddled. My other, the psycho Aby., still won't let me pick her up easily. It's been almost 3 years and I have to corner her every time. I rarely can touch her at all when in the cage, no head scratches or chin tickles nothing! But once I have her, I get kisses and cuddles and she loves to be pet. She used to be really bad about putting her back in the cage, she'd try to jump out of my hands etc but after I watched the video you did awhile back about that, I tried your technique and she's much better. I set her down but dont remove my hands unless she's calm, she still runs away as soon as take my hands away but it's more of a slow scamper instead of a frenzied mad dash for freedom. Also, I hold them both like a football like you do only the other way around, bum in the palm of my hand and head at my elbow, they'll both go sound asleep like that Thanks for another great video

These videos are SO valuable! I’m about to get my first piggies and have been learning so much. Thank you for doing these videos. You’re helping to ensure pigs end up in good homes with well educated owners who are informed on what they are getting into. Keeps pigs out of shelters. ❤️
when i first got my guinea 5 years ago he was absolutely terrified, honestly so scared and he wouldn’t take food from me or anything. Now he doesn’t wriggle and happily let’s me pick him up, he eats food on my lap and he snuggles up to me and enjoys being held :) It took a few months for him to properly relax but now he’s the happiest guinea ever!
So my mom has a class guinea pig for her class at my school and every morning I come in with her to feed him some lettuce or spinach and I’m super excited because I get to take him home on Monday and care for him the whole summer! I’ve been watching tons of guinea pig videos just in case and make sure that he will have a good time
Thank you for re sharing this video! Harriet still doesn't like to be picked up, though once i have her, she's fine. Since i have weak muscles on my right side, I have learned to adapt a safe way to pick her up. I use her cozy cup and she goes in there and i also get her when she is in her hidey hut . I use my left hand. I always bring her from her home to the room in her cozy cup. She loves it and feels safe!
I held my girls upright, only because they weren't really too timid and easy to handle and work with. This is super super educational and for those who have no idea how to handle their pigs, this is awesome! Thanks for sharing!! So many people have the wrong idea.
See, you are a true Guinea Pig whisperer! I have to try this now! I thought I was doing that lol obviously there is a way to pick up all Guinea Pig's. GOOD VIDEO AGAIN!

thanks, Saskia! i just happen to have five guinea pigs, but i've had even more in the past. several of them are very skittish. as you might have guessed, i'm quite experienced in this subject, but every little bit helps.once again, thank you!!
Thank you so much for this video . We have just adopted our first guinea pig and we were told he had been handled a lot ... nope full on lie . Hes just like those two skittish boys in your video. This will really help thank you
Just found your video. Not had my two boys for long but they're really skittish. Today was the first time I've held one through following your advice. Thank you❤
A dry bathtub with a couple of towels on the bottom for traction can be a great place for a young child ( well, actually for anyone) to learn to intact with and handle us.
Thank you for making this! I myself am a child, who recently got guinea pigs. I am trying to do as much research as possible and certainly don’t want to scare them! This will be super helpful for when I pick them up! If anyone has any tips about guinea pigs, it would be appreciated!
thank you for another great video. If the area is too big I partition it so that they have a very limited run area. I have extra wire cube squares that I fold around them. After that I follow them with my hands the way Saska does in a previous video and then pick them up. One of my guinea pigs lets me pick her up any old time, the rest don't like the initial pick up. The less time spent herding them, the calmer they are, which is why I limit the herding area to a few squares.
This is actually really useful for me.. i am currently studying animal care and we have 3 guinea pigs at the care location and they are all pretty skittish.. there is one that is alone wich i’ve not had any issues with myself as she usually hides under the bedding so i can easily scoop her up because she will stay there and feels safe under the bedding.. the other two however are super duper skittish.. so the explanation of how to grab them the best really cleared stuff up.. (i did already hold them the way you did but i grew up around animals and am used to holding animals that way as for me it’s the easiest way to hold them.. and the most stable aswell.. )
I always tell my pets what is about to happen. I address one by name to get her attention and then say "TREATS!" or "pellets" or "litter," etc. Sort of like a command so they know what to expect. When I need to pick one up, I say "Come out?"
Basically, Guinea pigs will always hate being picked up, but, Saskia technique is so effective, that it makes the guinea a little less scared. It's like when you see a big doggo for the 50th time, and you know that doggo. But it always runs up to you, and you instinctively get scared for a moment, but then decide not to run or just run a little then stop, realizing that there is no reason to run. The doggo is nice. This is what guinea pigs feel once they start getting used to you. It's very nice to see.
This was so informative thank you one of my piggies is super used to me and lets me pick her up whenever but the other one I thought she just hated me but I am definitely gonna try these techniques and hopefully she will get more used to me
This helped me a lot! First time I’ve picked my guinea pig up since I got him a year ago! He was scared at first but I gave him pea flakes while carrying him and it calmed him down
Great instructions!! Its about helping the pig feel secure. What about using a towel? I use a towel or cuddle cup when holding pigs. Then I wrap the towel or close the sides of the cup around pig and put the pig back in cage letting the pig walk out of the towel/cup. I continue to hold it until they have completely walked out making sure no feet are caught in towel.
One of my guinea pigs is easy to pick up. Her I can pick up with one hand and she will stay still. When on the floor she comes to me and puts her front paws on my hand and then I scoop up her but. My other guinea pig doesn't like to be picked up. In the cage I can pick her up using two hands. But when she is on the floor I use a different method. I trained her to go into a fleece house. Then I pick up the house and carry her to the cage. She now nows to stay still untill I tell her to come out. So if your guinea pig really hates to be picked up, train them to go into something. That way you can avoid a lot of stress.
Guinea Pigs rock. At the end I think they want feeding from the wheeking just like my babies. plus I want to marry you. Oh your married already. I love people who love the Guineas. Lots of love from London UK from someone who adopts abandoned Piggies. Keep up the good work.
Useful vid as usual. My four girls don't like being picked up from their cage. But they like going into a cosy bed to be taken away cause they feel secure. To tidy their cage every day I put them in a small one on a table close to their c and c cage. They know when the staff is over and they chew their grids in a hurry to get back home and I don't need to do anything, they jump in my arms, in an order they know perfectly. Number one is,,, Nina ! Number two is..... Etc. That's the game they like. Kiss to everybody. OLD FRENCH LADY

My babies are skittish so this is very helpful for me. Thank you soooo much Saskia!
Covered perfectly Saskia, thank you xxx
My piggie house has a removable lid perfect for blocking the exits
Thank you so much for this video. I use your techniques for my two boys. I was very intimidated at first, but now it's really easy. I've already trained them with food to come out by themselves.
Thank you😘
Dankjewel saskia altijd fijn om je te zien uitleggen 😘🥰🥰🙏
thanks, Saskia! i just happen to have five guinea pigs, but i've had even more in the past. several of them are very skittish. as you might have guessed, i'm quite experienced in this subject, but every little bit helps.once again, thank you!!
I love how at 12:24 the other guinea pig is like "T R A I T O R. How could you let hooman pick you up?"😂😂😂😂
I’m so pleased I’ve found your videos! So much great advice - our skittish guinea pig is already calming down. Thank you xx
That is great news!!
Thank you❤
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I FINALLY PICKED UP MY GUINEA PIG TODAY!!
Fantastic!!!!!!! I am SO happy to hear that.
I love the white one and the fluffy light cream colored one so beautiful. Too bad I live too far away.
A dry bathtub with a couple of towels on the bottom for traction can be a great place for a young child ( well, actually for anyone) to learn to intact with and handle us.
Cozy tunnels are a great help with picking up piggies.
Thank u!!!! I am a first time "skinny pig" owner and this was very helpful!!!
Thank you for making this! I myself am a child, who recently got guinea pigs. I am trying to do as much research as possible and certainly don’t want to scare them! This will be super helpful for when I pick them up! If anyone has any tips about guinea pigs, it would be appreciated!
saskia- good boy
Guinea pig- if I'm I a good boy can you please put me down now
My cousins guinea pig likes to sit on my your shoulder and borrow himself into long thick hair, and it really cute!
My guinea pig does that, he also tries to nibble my nose and lays under my chin
They are such good looking guinea pigs.
😂 Oh now I know the right way to hold my burrito too
Thank you Saskia
thank you for another great video.
Great info! Very well done.
Guinea pigs are the cutest.
LA guinnea pig rescue... hmmm I definitely like this video!
I needed this video! Thank you so much!! I hope everyone is staying safe xxx
Hey this video made me not scared of grabbing the genia pigs thanks and I love your videos
Oh I am so happy about that!
Thanks
This is actually really useful for me.. i am currently studying animal care and we have 3 guinea pigs at the care location and they are all pretty skittish.. there is one that is alone wich i’ve not had any issues with myself as she usually hides under the bedding so i can easily scoop her up because she will stay there and feels safe under the bedding.. the other two however are super duper skittish.. so the explanation of how to grab them the best really cleared stuff up.. (i did already hold them the way you did but i grew up around animals and am used to holding animals that way as for me it’s the easiest way to hold them.. and the most stable aswell.. )
Thank you for sharing! The little guy over Your right shoulder kept jumping up on the cage behind her. Guess he wanted to be in the video too!
Thanks for sharing so excited for our first Guinea Pig
He was scared at first but I gave him pea flakes while carrying him and it calmed him down
Me and my guinea pig have a good relationship so i can pick him up however and he is a ok with it lol
My guinea pig Norman, is a rescued guinea pig. I can tell because he’s super used to the wild and he digs holes
Tysm I held him!
I learned a lot
Beautiful markings
This really helped me alot. I have two guinea pigs for pet and I don't have any experience with handling them.
I’m getting two guinea pigs tomorrow! Two girls, wish me luck! 💜
Congrats!!
Saskia from Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue thank you :)
How are they?
Amazing! I hope they are doing good!
Thank you very much, Saskia!
4:27 oh-oh. nowhere to run.
Great teaching vid! Bravo.
I have my piggies for a day now and I can do everything with them I love them
Great Video!! Thank you Saskia I learned so much from this video!
Super helpful. Thanks for posting this!!
I have a pair of 5 week old boars , I am learning a lot !!
I'm glad you uploaded this!! It is difficult for me to pick up one of my pigs, so this is very helpful for me! :)
Thank you for that informational video!
Are there any videos like this about ways to pet and bomd with them? I adopted two guinea pigs from a bad situation about two months ago and I am having trouble bonding with them
Thanks for the share.one of mine is just like this.have been trying to figure out what I was doing wrong .so thanks very much for this.
I guide mine into a pigloo and pick them up from there, seems the least stressful option for them.
That’s good!
