Guinea pigs need patience and a lot of attention to make them feel at ease in your environment. My pigs don't even budge when I walk in and out of the room. If I pick one of them up and put them on my lap they will sprawl out and sometimes go to sleep. They even let me know when to put them down so they can go to the bathroom. My pigs act more like puppies than guinea pigs. I love how they stand up on their hind legs when I hand feed them. Honestly I love the little cuties they are joyful to have the 6 of them I have.
Just br gentle. Important they have sensation spines. So no harness or anything that might make them bend. Say hi and offer a finger to sniffing nib le. This is not a bite. Now come from the side to pick up. If you come from above its like hawk claws grabbing prey animals. Enjoy.
Guinea pigs are one of my favourite 2 pets! Their just so soft cute and cuddly. My rabbit was my best friend, not just a pet. Guinea pigs are cute and I love their wheeking and squeaking. Feed them fruit and veg, un cooked of course. Cooked food is bad for rabbits and guinea pigs. I used to feed my rabbits parsley and dandelions! I LOVE guinea pigs SOOOO much!!!!
Remember if you have guneapigs that don’t feel comfortable with you even tho you have done everything right, it takes alot of patience for them to trust you they are pray animals and are on their toes for understandable reasons. I have had mine for 4 years and have done things with them everyday and one of them didn’t fully trust me before like three weeks ago so 4 years took for one of them and that’s okay. When you get to know them when they can relaxe around you they will create a relationship with you ❤
I had an odd story of building trust, though. My relatives were looking after my piggies about a week I spent on a little trip in which they let them to stroll around our country house territory without my permission(they were young and fast back then and my relatives didn't knew properly how to carry them), so... they immediately ran and hide somewhere. One gladly was chilling under a bush where it was easy to catch but the other crawled under the shed. This one has some genetical problems and was probably scared in her childhood, so she was the fastest and the most cowardly. It was hard to get her from there, but they managed too. So when I returned I noticed a change in their behavior: they didn't run away from visitors and easily let to take themselves. I have no idea why did it change them, but ever since then they are comfortable around me and my family.
Here's the thing: guinea pigs WANT to get to know their owners as they are naturally social and outgoing animals. However they are (understandably) hardwired to fear any creature bigger than them and capable of picking them up. But their instinctual defenses will decrease with time.
Here are some tips If you get 2 Wich I HIGHLY recommend...if you don't want fighting don't get 2 boys but if you don't want breeding don't get a boy and girl...I recommend you get 2 girls because they can't breed and they won't try and harm each other all the time. If you want your guinea pig to stay happy get a big cage and if you want (you don't have to but this helps) you can build a big play cage with gates around and some mats that are soft enough so they don't get bumble foot...so they can run around once or twice a day every day if they have a small cage. Please DONT mess with your guinea pig right when you get them because they need time to get used to their environment and bond with each other...I would say to wait 3 days before trying to bond with your pigs so they can get used to their new home They don't always liked being picked up or pet, sometimes it's uncomfortable but it's nice to pet them to sleep. They get easily scared of a loud noise so try not to make loud sounds because it can hurt their ears and scare them If they squeak when you touch a bag or something they will think it's good and they will squeak at you asking for some food... Try not to give so much fruits I say give them fruit every 3 weeks same with treats because it can cause their poop to be mushy and soft and it can give them a tummy ache if you give to much treats.... Hopefully you take my advice!
@@JasonClinardRoth no it absolutely doesn't its a fear mongering stigma against males that causes people to not get pairs of them which is highly important. Males argue more yes, especially over territory so they need more room than females, its always good to be perceptive of how they treat each other since you don't want to put two dominant males together. The only thing is if you see teeth chattering sadly you have to separate them that goes for male or female
@@JasonClinardRoth I doesn´t always apply. I have had only one boy who became so aggressive during puberty he had to be separated from his ex-friend. I had various combinations from two babies growing up together to old adult and baby, and they worked with the exception of that one crazy alpha male who also isn´t afraid to slightly bite people when he doesn´t like something, and watches fireworks from the top of his hiding instead of hiding inside like a normal pig.
Laughed at the maze idea My granddaughter spent hours making a big one with cardboard boxes on the lounge floor. She hid treats, parsley, cucumber, spinach in various places to make it more interesting. Both guinea pigs stared at the maze flatly for ages, then they set off, over the top of it all, straight to where the treats were. We learned a lot about piggies that day, and my granddaughter never built them another maze EVER.
One thing all nine piggies that owned me loved: FRESH, TENDER crabgrass or nutgrass or rye/fescue blend from the yard! Pick a bunch of it at least as large as your piggie is. What they don't eat, feels SO GOOD to lay on. Your little friend will find a place where they LOVE to sit and even nap on you. It's been my tummy, my shoulder, my chest, and BEHIND MY NECK!!! I've had piggies that "liked" classical music and "watching" football (cheering for the ball!). The more you handle and cuddle your pig, the happier they are, and some will become comfortable enough with you, they'll lay down and go sound asleep. Being prey animals, Guinea Pigs sleep with their eyes slightly open 99% of the time. If they close their eyes completely, you know it loves and trusts you totally. G. Pigs are also VERY smart. In a month's time they will learn opening the fridge door means "FOOD!" or rustling their hay bag or pellet container. Miss Snook'ums thought I was Guinea Pig-she'd sit on my shoulder and "groom" my hair like I was another pig. To "house-break" your piggie, the easiest for them and you is a BIG plastic dust-pan on the floor, with the same litter as in their house. Start with some litter they have puddled and pilled on and 75% fresh litter. "Snooking" around on the floor, they'll smell "themselves" in the dust-pan and investigate. You might have some little "pills" to pick-up for a while, but they are clean and odorless.
my guimea loves when i wear hoodies. he either goes in the pocket or if i have the hood up, he climbs onto my shoulder and goes in the hood and grooms or eats my hair lol
I have 2 pigs, they are completely different. My big dude, Harvey, loves his butt cupped when he lays down with me, and if I take my hand away for too long, he'll give me the death stare. My my littler guy, Kurt, loves me to rake his back real lightly.
I accidentally got temporary custody of my niece's piggy and I really fell in love with her, that was 5 years ago and now am planning to get one of my own
We put small cardboard boxes (upside down with a hole cut out) in our piggy’s cage and she immediately abandons her perfectly good house for the cardboard box
Also don’t pet them on the side bcz he/she will nip you. Also, give them time and they go from their first bite from you to climbing on your lap regularly.

They're not much unlike rabbits neither!
They piss every 15 minute how do u clean that
Michael Wycoff that has been my experience too. Once they overcome that instinctual fear they can bond just like a dog or cat
