  • We tried out free roaming for the guinea pigs! It was fun but also very weird, having to look where you step as the piggies started exploring all the other rooms.

Years ago I adopted a piggie who refused to be caged. His first night he escaped and I found him lounging on my sofa! After a few weeks of trying to keep him in I gave up and he was fully free range. After a while I noticed he was pooping in the same spot so I got him a cat litter tray that he'd use. He was hilarious. He knew the food was in the fridge and would stand by it yelling until I fed him! Every morning he'd appear next to my bed yelling until I picked him up and had cuddles in bed. I miss him dearly, he was truly unique. Rip Lord Reginald!

I am 66 yrs old now. I had a small herd of piggies when I was a teen. They had free range of the fenced back yard when the weather was mild. When the piggies heard me get home from school and heard the gate open, they would RUN to me weeking an enthusiastic welcome, a sweet little stampede of love! I would sit in the grass and they would climb on me. I LOVED it!

I’m 64 now but still remember the joy our Guinea pigs gave us when I was about 11.My brother had a Black and Tan male called William,we adored him as did our mongrel dog called Emma who was of similar colours and treated him like her puppy, regularly cleaning him by licking and gently chewing off the stuck bits in his fur whilst clasping him between her two front legs.
Tragedy struck one day when William went missing from the garden,we hunted high and low for him all over the fields we lived near.I was out with Emma as a search party when suddenly, about half a mile from the garden,I heard William screeching and squeaking in delight the way they do and Emma barking with her tail going 19 to the dozen staring at a pile of wood where dear old William was.
Much sniffing and snorting in delight and the feeding of the prodigal son later back in his cage followed.
Good old Emma, she was a Heinz 57 costing a £1 from the local dogs home back in 1969 when she was eight weeks old and made up of God knows what but she was the kindest, caring and tolerant dog I have ever come across.Happy to be pushed around in my dolls pram complete with hat and blanket.
And she only cost us a £1 from the local dogs home when she was eight weeks old but was worth every penny. We had her when I was 7 and she died when she was 17,still miss her.

Awwww, look at that wee piggie who stayed home! My sister once bought a cat bed for her piggie, who she accidentally left out, lounging in his bed one time, while we went to the shops. When we came home and realised what she had done, we watched the CCTV camera she had next to his cage and all fell about laughing, watching him climb back into his cage for a wee and a poo, then climbing back out to get back in his comfy bed. He did this three times, while we were out (it was a big shop, for food for the week and also a BBQ we were hosting on the weekend.)

This little bunch is really well-behaved and mostly stayed on their side, which was really funny to see! I was just waiting for them to pee on something, because it is one of their very guinea pig-like skills. It's good to see them so well taken care of! ♡

This is such great exercise and enrichment for indoor pigs.
I have 2 angora rabbits that are house-rabbits except at nighttime. While they're caged my geriatric Pigpen and fairly old english spot/lionhead rabbit have free roam and it's adorable. They grew up as siblings so they communicate well but pairing the 2 species isn't really recommended. These two are just inseparable. I only wish I could share pics! True inter-species bonding.

When I had guinea pigs, I kept their cage open during the day pretty much all the time. They would hop in and out of their cage and they never seemed to poop or pee outside of their cage. The only time I ever closed their cage was at night or if I wasn't home to supervise them. I just felt bad leaving them in their cage especially during winter when they could not go outside.

Your GPs are doing great. It is so refreshing to see them living in clean habitat and having a rich life. Congrats. 👍
This reminds me of my middle years (I'm old now). I had GPs and bred for the Palomino colouration with a thick white rough (their mane). I had around 78-90 including pups at any time. There were Silkies and smooths in the Palamino colour range and one pair of Dutch (black and white). Inside the house, they did get up to mischief though! They ate the books, the legs of the furniture even though they had plenty of nice fresh-cut sawn pine to chew their teeth down on. And some of the younger smaller ones found their way into the piano! oh dear 🙄
They mostly had free access to the house although sometimes I made them stay in the garden when I needed a bed cleaned up before the next planting. When they lived inside I had to always be doing their claws. I used a small-sized cats claw clippers. GPs claws are much shorter than cats claws but they can still climb very well. I found I had to do them every second week at least because the vinyl flooring didn't wear them down enough and the GPs would be skating around without grip and the claws would grow mis-shapen.
My oldest Gps were a male and female who each lived to 9yo. I was told they lived so long because I gave them extra vitamin C in the form of a little purchased orange juice concentrate in their drinkers. Not much, just a taste. I froze it into little ice cubes and put one or two in each drinker each day. Apparently, GPs have a high need for VitC. Fresh Oj is a great way to provide it for them. But they also got a mineral supplement as well in their pellets.
Then I moved to a tiny rural village so I could have my horses on the same property with me. Just a couple acres.
When I was away competing at rodeos for several days at a time, the GPs lived in a large specially built chookpen style structure about 20ft (6m) square divided down the middle to separate the boys and girls. It was connected to the house via a long walkway with steps to go upstairs to 'my' level. But they had great weatherproof quarters in their outside run, with growing lawn at one end, a hayrack, hanging vegetable basket, half the pen was roofed with concrete floor with old carpet over that for footing. They had everything they needed including warmth in winter or a fan in summer. It was made from strong woven wire mesh and sawn timber posts with metal sheet roofing, their sleeping rooms were walled off with airflow and lighting. The whole pen had the same mesh over the top so it was predator-proof. The gate had a lock on it. My horse caretaker lady who came daily to do the horses while I was away, also did the GPs. She cleaned and fed them with the same care as the horses.
New neighbours moved in who couldn't or wouldn't control their hunting dogs which escaped while I was away. I returned to find the gate lock removed and dead GPs everywhere including all down through the horse yards, in the creek, under the house.😱🥵 It was one of the most gruesome sights I ever encountered. My lovely piggies, killed for sport by people who would have known exactly what they were doing. My lovely caretaker lady beside herself with grief, crying uncontrollably, trying to find the remaining few pups that were hiding under whatever they could find to dig themselves under. Of the 89 residing in the pen when I left, only 9 pups remained when I got home 4days later.
The lock had been cut with bolt cutters. The police did their thing but there was no proof cos in those days it was before security cameras were a thing that everyone had. It was way before mobile phones too! I sold the last of the pups when they were old enough and never had any more. 😩😭😰
