    Hi everyone, besides the consistency, l learnt that cocoa butter has a longer shelf life than Shea and mango butters. Hence cocoa butter seems to be the best option when making lotion bars!

    The problem with coconut oil is that it is comedogenic (it clogs pores), so it is especially bad for acne or oily skin.

    The Shea butter can indeed be a great alternative for cocoa butter and vice versa, yes they are very different in texture but their healing properties and benefits for the skin are very similar, the only major difference is that cocoa butter smells like chocolate while Shea butter has more of a nutty scent. I do agree though that you can't swap coconut oil for the butters as they are very different but you can use any other oil to replace the coconut oil, not just babassu, you can use olive, sweet almond, grapeseed, jojoba it doesn't matter as long as you're using a moisturizing oil. So I say just use whatever you have on hand people. If a recipe calls for cocoa butter, but all you have is Shea butter then just use that, the benefits are more or less the same anyway, when you melt them they are both the same liquid oil.

I learned some things in your video, but I have a suggestion to make it more educational. Maybe provide some finer details about each ingredient. Like specific benefits of one butter over the other. Say one has more vitamins or whatever the case may be. That sort of information is extremely valuable as well! Thank you! Have a great day!

      I wrote a book called Natural Oils & Butters: A Color Encyclopedia with full monographs, fatty acid profiles, uses, chemistry on 172 natural oils.480 pages, full color. Not trying to promote per se but people like you are the very reason I spent 8 years collecting data and 2 full years of writing after I retired as a Registered Nurse. If you go to Amazon and look up that title, I think there is a 'look inside' feature. It is spendy at $49.95 but that is the retail the publisher recommended based on the size of the book, color illustrations (which I did myself after spending years learning photoshop). Good luck on your business. PS. There is NO BOOK on the market that has 172 oils and butters outlined.

      There are too many factors. It all depends on where you live, how sensitive, thick, thin, porous your skin is, etc. Even how much water you drink and the foods you eat. Everyone’s skin is different. If coconut oil breaks you out, don’t use it. Shea butter does nothing for me, in fact, it breaks me out. My skin isn’t dry enough or thick enough for it. Coconut oil has worked wonders on my skin. Just plain old Unrefined, Extra Virgin, Organic Coconut Oil, not mixed with anything else.

    Maybe I am using it incorrectly… it’s my first month using Shea Butter and it’s winter now. Due to the temperature it is always solid hard in the morning and I have to warm it up using a microwave. However I am not sure if I am using the right amount but after two hours of using it my skin dries out and I will find that some places on my body are not properly covered. At the moment I don’t have a choice but to use Shea butter first then petroleum jelly but is there any recommendation you would recommend, should I apply more of Shea butter, or mix it with another oil … 🤔

    The problem with coconut oil is that I can't keep it solid where I live so it really isn't a good choice for anything I want to make unless I try to add beeswax to make it firmer. Plus like others have said it seems to cause skin issues for me, it just isn't a good match.

      Personally I'm not much of a butters-on-the-face person; I prefer something lighter, like a liquid oil or emulsified lotion. Your experience with coconut oil is pretty common, though! I need some help. I am going greener with my beauty products and I want to use either Aloe Vera gel, cocoa butter, or Shea butter to prevent and get rid or wrinkles. My concern is I do NOT want a product that will lighten my skin. I have heard that some of these can lighten skin and I do not want that. I am fine with getting a little tan but not lightening my skin even more to look like a vampire. Can someone please help?

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      None of those ingredients are going to get rid of wrinkles or lighten your skin. They can help soften your skin, and the aloe vera gel can help hydrate and plump to diminish the appearance of wrinkles, but they aren't going to work any kind of magic. The best thing for preventing wrinkles is a good sunscreen, applied daily :)

  • @proverbalizer
    @proverbalizer 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    you forgot to mention that Coconut oil is comodogenic (can clog pores) while Shea butter is not. As thick as Shea is, you can probably rub a good amount into your face and not have problems with breakouts, whereas (depending on your skin) coconut oil may be bad for acne...I think it's great for hair though...and much easier to spread evenly through your hair than the butters

    • @erinericsson

      Virgin Coconut oil melts with body temperature and with even less hot temperatures. So your statement makes no sense.

    • @proverbalizer
      @proverbalizer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@erinericsson It makes a lot of sense and is based on facts and studies. And I wasn't even talking about melting temperature so your comment is irrelevant. Although the fact that coconut oil melts more easily is part of what makes it easier to spread through hair, which i said.

      @@erinericsson you don't believe what's correct? That coconut oil is comodegenic, and shea butter is non-comodogenic? That info is pretty widespread.
      I noticed when I used to mix more coconut oil into the shea butter that I would use on my body I would start to get some acne type bumps on my chest, which normally doesn't happen.

    I'm trying to make a conditioner bar and part of my issue is that my hair is so thick and curly I use a LOT of conditioner so pulling a bar through my hair im just finding that i'm not able to get enough into my hair. I thought about swapping a cocoa butter base for shea since shea is so much softer I assumed it would melt at body temp like coconut but stay more solid but it sounds like shea actually has a higher melting point than cocoa? I might just need to give up on my fantasy of having a bar and go back to liquid because it seems like having a solid oil that would also have the slip I need is going to be a struggle.

    • @HumblebeeAndMe
      @HumblebeeAndMe  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm, yeah, I can see what you mean. Creams/liquids may be the way to go for you. I find that lowering the melting points of meant-to-be-solid shower things can end up in creating shower putties, though that will vary with precisely what you're making and using (shampoo bars love to tend towards putty if too soft LOL). Perhaps you could try creating a conditioning liquid oil? It could be more concentrated but easier to saturate the hair with?
