Brandon Holt Thornton is the GOAT!! At the last Sharks home game of this weird season I bought a Tshirt with his face on it that says “He’s still got it”. And he does! Now we’ve just got to get him that damn Cup! 🦈🦈🦈🦈🏒🥅
Best example I can think of is Olli Jokinen. Drafter 3rd overall in 1997 behind Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, Jokinen struggled in his early years. By the time he was 22 he was already on his third team and had never scored more than 11 goals and 29 points in a season. Many people had written him off as a bust. But then during the 2002-03 season (five years after being drafted) he exploded for 36 goals and 65 points. His 36 goals were more goals than he had scored in his previous 4 seasons combined. So you never know. Some players need time to hit their stride.
@@valitsemllaluokanavahyvaks3556 Jokinen played an NHL record 799 games before making his first and only Stanley Cup playoff appearance in 2009 with the Flames. I 100% believe size is Hughes’ biggest problem. That being said, he has been the small guy his entire life. The NHL isn’t moving towards “bigger” players. He just needs time to adjust and mature a little. His skating technique, and playmaking abilities are already good enough.
David Daniels Wong yeah I’d consider him more of a power forward. I think his defense needs to play defense first I have no idea what Edmontons blue line is doing half the time and I don’t think they do either.
Captiankirk games they don’t even play on the same line? Connor is trash until he gets wingers to back him up. You are only as good as the team around you and Edmonton ain’t shit
I truly hope he is using this time away from the rink to add size. Depending on how the schedule shapes up, he will have had about 9-12+ months to spend in the gym and kitchen.
Canucks have had a lot of picks that never panned out, but I'm glad the Sedins weren't among them. Another one that initially looked like a bust was Petr Nedved. Came into the league with a lot of hype, drafted 2nd overall in 1990 in Vancouver, by Vancouver, in front of a stadium of Canuck fans...there was a lot of expectations and excitement over this kid, especially when compared to his countryman, Jagr who was drafted 5th that same year, and lighting it up in Pittsburgh. Came into his own eventually and even had a 99 point season in Pittsburgh. Thanks for posting, and stay safe!
The problem with Hughes is that he hasn't shown that he's mentally capable of dominating any facet of the game past mid-level Juniors. World Junior Championships - 43% on faceoffs (for a #1 draft pick? Against Juniors?). Got injured (again, in Juniors, and this guy is supposed to be NHL ready?), and he's always been a pass-first player... This isn't a bad thing in itself, Adam Oates made a career of setting up guys like Ovechkin and Hull. The problem IS his passing. Way too many passes nowhere near the target, and he created so many negative odd-man rushes that he was a major reason (one of many, looking at you Subban and Schneider) the season was tanked after 20 games. I bought a GameCenter subscription specifically to watch the Devils, so I'm not 'being a hater' or have an uneducated opinion. In fact, my opinion also includes the 9 months of hockey BEFORE he even suited up for his first NHL game. In a nutshell, he is not mentally NHL caliber, absolutely not an NHL Center (he played the last ~15 games on the Wing), and is wayyyyy closer to Alexandre Daigle than Jon Toews (which was an insane comparison from the start). As a Devils fan, I sure hope he turns it around... But there is no doubt in my mind that the Dev's should have taken Kakko, or traded the pick for a gold mine of (legitimate) prospects, and let someone else roll the dice on the hype.
Yeah, I do too. I also remember the Forsberg one: "Pete, can you put out the light?" "Sure" *smashes the light with his stick* (It's paraphrased btw...)
Mark Stone suffered some injuries, but he turned into a great player, all his career I knew he was good, he put up over a point per game on the sens, and then he was traded and I now a top 10 forward, debatably the best two way forward in the league.
As an Oiler fan, I think Drai's development was just about perfect. It's not established fact that dominating lower leagues is a great development path. I think Drai's rookie season was a much needed slap to the face that informed him on his development. There were key skills such as skating speed that could cut it in the CHL but not in the NHL. It also gave our GM leverage to force Prince Albert to trade Drai's rights to Kelowna, which allowed him to have a long playoffs in the WHL and play with highly skilled teammates. I think it takes a player with strong character to react to hardship the way Drai did, but he was all the better for it.

In his first year, he was ok, but didn't exactly set the world on fire and was inconsistent. Like the other players discussed, he steadily improved every year since. Today, Eichel is one of the top 10 players in the league.
Jack B he has been compared too much to Connor Mcdavid, however I think The gap between the two is tighter than most people think. Top 5 centers in the league
I would just like to say that Joe Thornton's rookie year was done on purpose. Head coach, Pat Burns, said from day one that Joe was too talented to be sent back to the minors but not quite ready for the NFL. So Burns and the Bruins took it very slow with Joe's development. They even said back then to be patient because he was going to be an elite player.
Angus Hiltz yeah and Joe was already showed he was a great player in Boston but he couldn’t lead us in the playoffs so we traded him for absolute nobodies. Have you read what we could’ve got from Anaheim???
Johnny the Machine Burke said. “I told OC that I would protect 5 players on my roster and he could take whoever he had ranked 6th. No restrictions. Then I’d add another roster player, a prospect, and a first. I’m still bitter we didn’t get him.” So basically a top 6 player on a cup winning team, roster player, prospect, and draft pick. I’m not mad since we ended up with the cup but god dayum that was 10x better then what we got from San Jose
I think with jack he just needs a season or two of development in the AHL or another league every hammers on these poor kids for not performing on the expectations given to them and realistically who here can say they’ve been drafted first overall in the NHL 🤷🏼♂️
The same game Mathews scored 4 goals on his debut there were talks about if Marner should make the lineup so I think that’s our bust that is now a star
I don't think it's on the same level as these, but for a 1st pick, MacKinnon was looking like a huge disappointment. He did have that really good 63 point Calder season, but his next 3 seasons were: 38 in 64, 52 in 72, and 53 in 82. That stagnant production, especially as a more one-dimensional offensive minded player, is a nightmare for a player that was supposed to be so much more. He also started off brutal the next year too, but the Duchene trade coincided with him just completely taking off into what he is now.
Mark Sheifele is a good name but from the same draft #3 overall Jonathan Huberdeau looked to be barely average top6 forward and now is a consistent ppg producer that will end up being the GOAT of Miami Panthers... (Okay, not a legendary franchise but still...)
I know he don't count since he was the first pick of the 2nd round, but Ray Whitney had a lot of hype around him, as many thought he would be a first rounder. He looks like he was bound for a minor league career after his tenure with the Sharks. Who would've thought a tenure in Florida would actually SAVE his career!
Does anyone else realize if the Devils took Kakko, Hughes would have had 40 plus points with the Rangers? Kakko the Devils? Yikes 10-15 points if that. Hughes was noticeably better all year long.
oilers used too pmo when they used too rush their players too..theyd rush players in hopes to make the playoffs right away instead of building on their talent pool..leon draisaitl they got lucky with..n jumbo jo..at worst i thot he'd only be a pp specialist...then i realized they put him on the fourth line..so as players that r projected to be high point impact players i dont think putting them in the 4th line is the way to go..usually ur 4th line players r not good passers n shooters..so i say leave them in the minors for another yr n try them in ur 2nd line n some power play time..good work rob stay safe n keep up the good work
jack hughes i say wai till he has abit more talent ard him..i think he can be # 1 if not # 2 dman..i say he can have almost a point per game in like 2 or 3 yrs time..dynamic skater n thinks the game well
Flyers with James van Reimsdyk. I think he lived in the shadow that the Flyers should have gotten Kane and never produced much but then blew up when playing for the Leafs.
That Thornton trade proved to be one of the worst long term trades ever. The Sharks got so much value out of him compared to all 3 of the players that Boston recieved
Hedman. He was so bad in his first few years in the NHL and never played in the AHL. He was just stuck in the NHL and luckily eventually became the superstar he is today
We could make a case for Guy Lafleur! 60ish points in his first three years and then just doubling that amount for the next 7 with at least 119 a season!
Yeah he went from a good player, to a top player in the NHL. I have been planning on making a video on this topic for a while. The story is really awesome
Nino fell victim to not be placed in the correct position to succeed. He was playing 4th line minutes with guys like Pandolfo with no chance at generating offense.
I tell people who knock on Jack Hughes is that he jumped from the USHL (NCAA, and the AHL) to the NHL. I believe Jack is ahead of the skillet and potential of Joe Thornton at that age. Jack will have more muscle mass like Patrick Kane and mold around whoever the Devils draft.
Nah he never looked out of place if he was. Ranger he'd have 40 plus points. Devils best player had 40 points lmao I mean there's not much to work with on Jersey
Dylan Strome. Obviously he's not a star like the others, but he's a good player who a lot of people thought wouldn't turn out at all. Same with a guy like Tony DeAngelo. A lot of good players who had slow starts. You could even sort of say the same for MacKinnon. He wasn't in "bust" territory, but he was definitely a disappointment in his first three seasons, where in those first three seasons, he only had 10 points more in those three seasons than Nico Hischier had in his first three seasons, and look at MacKinnon now.
My team drafted Joe Thornton lol but they also drafted Tyler Seguin as and traded him because at the time the coach was Claude Julien and he didnt know how to properly utilize Seguin and obviously was very defensive minded and on top of that he just didn't like young players that much. Got robbed in that trade too

I think with jack he just needs a season or two of development in the AHL or another league every hammers on these poor kids for not performing on the expectations given to them and realistically who here can say they’ve been drafted first overall in the NHL 🤷🏼♂️
NIce video man! :D
You live in Alberta?
Yes. I am from BC, but live in Alberta
Rob Talks Hockey That’s really cool! Me too!
This guy deserves way more than 17 k!
Hughes was noticeably better all year long.
oilers used too pmo when they used too rush their players too..theyd rush players in hopes to make the playoffs right away instead of building on their talent pool..leon draisaitl they got lucky with..n jumbo jo..at worst i thot he'd only be a pp specialist...then i realized they put him on the fourth line..so as players that r projected to be high point impact players i dont think putting them in the 4th line is the way to go..usually ur 4th line players r not good passers n shooters..so i say leave them in the minors for another yr n try them in ur 2nd line n some power play time..good work rob stay safe n keep up the good work
jack hughes i say wai till he has abit more talent ard him..i think he can be # 1 if not # 2 dman..i say he can have almost a point per game in like 2 or 3 yrs time..dynamic skater n thinks the game well
@@donmor8029 ayo, quite a spot on prediction
Yes The Avalanche draft Nathan Mckinnon, it took him a few years to bloom but he was not a cocky kid like J.Huches. I put him around 10 in that draft
Draisaitl is German and Top 3 and Top 5 mean the same thing in hockey: Top 3 = 1st line forwards, Top 5 = 1st line fwd and def
We could make a case for Guy Lafleur! 60ish points in his first three years and then just doubling that amount for the next 7 with at least 119 a season!
When has 60ish points ever been bad? It's good enough for an allstar nod at least.
Being an oilers fan I think nugget Hopkins and draisaitl did start off a little underrated
2 years later, Jack Hughes is more than a point per game.
Mark Scheifele of the jets. 1pt in 7. 0in season 2. 34 in season 3. 49 in season 4. And now he is a 73 in 71.
Victor Hedman. Wasn’t until Jon Cooper came to the lightning that Hedman broke out as one of the leagues best defenseman
Maybe Mackinnon could make this list as well. He had a great rookie season, but never broke out until after his contract was signed
Yeah he went from a good player, to a top player in the NHL. I have been planning on making a video on this topic for a while. The story is really awesome
7:20 Tj Miller or joe Thornton?
Where you live in AB
Great piece.
Rick DiPietro
Nino fell victim to not be placed in the correct position to succeed. He was playing 4th line minutes with guys like Pandolfo with no chance at generating offense.
I cannot say Nino has lived to the expectations we might have from a top 5 pick.
Hughes is gonna regret going straight to the NHL. Or is it because he was playing with very little support around him?
I think it’s a combination of both. But not much regret when he’s making millions I guess
Usually first two picks play right away.
Nah he never looked out of place if he was. Ranger he'd have 40 plus points. Devils best player had 40 points lmao I mean there's not much to work with on Jersey
I like how Hughes has the single season point record for New Jersey
Dylan Strome. Obviously he's not a star like the others, but he's a good player who a lot of people thought wouldn't turn out at all. Same with a guy like Tony DeAngelo. A lot of good players who had slow starts. You could even sort of say the same for MacKinnon. He wasn't in "bust" territory, but he was definitely a disappointment in his first three seasons, where in those first three seasons, he only had 10 points more in those three seasons than Nico Hischier had in his first three seasons, and look at MacKinnon now.
I agree. I was going to include Strome, but I am going to wait for the next part
Montreal have actually drafted John LeClair but he became so good only after the Habs traded him to the Flyers
You pissed of the girls with that jack Hughes segment
When you are playing NHL 20 and realize that your top prospects need a year of development, but your AI auto signs him
Strome brothers are both turning it around. Not sure yet what their ceiling is though
Alexander Steen!... Hate to say it as a leaf fan.
Why is oilers so poisonous for starting player after mcjesus?
I didn’t realize that jumbo joe had that bad of a rookie season! Look where he is now!
My team drafted Joe Thornton lol but they also drafted Tyler Seguin as and traded him because at the time the coach was Claude Julien and he didnt know how to properly utilize Seguin and obviously was very defensive minded and on top of that he just didn't like young players that much. Got robbed in that trade too
Sam Bennet, 4th overall for my Flames and didnt really go anywhere until he was traded to Florida. Unfortunate
I am not sure if I heard you correctly, but u mentioned russian prospects, but Draisaitl is German...but maybe its my lack of listening skills :D
I heard that too when editing haha! I was trying to say “rushing” prospects
@@RobTalksHockey :D :D Oh thank you for clearing that one for me, it makes much more sense now .:D
Aleksander Barkov for the Panthers.
Although amazingly enough, he still isn't playing close up to his potential yet, if he'll get there.
Best pair of hands in the league possibly. It's him or Patty Kane.
I remember people being pissed off about the canucks drafting string bean Pettersson but that kid would wobble around defenders like they’re fruit on thanksgiving
In Jumbo Joe's defense, that Bruins team he got drafted onto was a dud. Strong defensively, but no real dynamic players up front.
also a video idea .. contracts that ruined players careers
I just realized how much sedins look like Undertaker when they got older :o
If you agree with me the leafs had Kaspari Kapenan even though he’s on Pittsburg he had a good season playing with Mathews
Well Yamamoto is starting look great
Dylan Strome. Struggled in Arizona, but starting to come into his own in Chicago. The jury is still out on him.
Also Thornton Brent Burns, Ryan Ellis and Ryan Oreilly have best beards in NHL 🧔
