Many college hockey players who come into the college league at 23or 24 from the Canadian league just want more development time and it works out very well for many of them
Considering his usage, PK skills which is on par to Marchand, yeah I'd say he's a star without being a Malkin or Point to Crosby or Stamkos, all those guys are elite 1c's and sometimes have to be a 2c. They're usually loaded on a PP1 together no matter what team. Hayes has never really seen PP until now. Add to the fact that he wasn't a natural center upon entering the league and still managed to figure out how to be a all situational 200 ft top 6 center. If you ever see a 3c who can put up 45+ points without much PP2 or abundance of PK time than they'll also get paid 7 mill and get labeled as a star. All 55-65 point players usually get easy zone starts, quality linemates and are on top PP units with stars. They just rack up on secondary assits but their inbetween play is blehhh. Hayes is a star 2c, deff will rep team USA next international tournament.
A). Kevin Hayes is NOT elite. Don’t know who thinks that but never heard that before this vid. B). Butcher hasn’t regressed this year, he’s played 56 games, he has 22 games to get 8 points just to match his season totals last year (I know his season is done, but saying he regressed makes no sense)
Kevin Hayes was sitting at just under point per game, and is a 6’5 forward who can kill penalties and score on the power play. He was playing like an elite player and got paid like an elite player. And in terms of Butcher’s play, his advanced stats show he has regressed both seasons after his rookie year, with this year being his worst.
Rob Talks Hockey getting payed like an elite player doesn’t make an elite player, and if we’re bringing up advanced stats then no Hayes is certainly not elite, he’s above average but using advanced stats elite is completely inaccurate. Giving my two cents here: on one point, the choice to sign anywhere is a player's right, but can you imagine a scenario where a player literally states he only wants to play for one team (and the team just happens to be a Cup favourite)? No player had been that audacious yet, but the possibility is there.
In relation to Kevin Hayes... the reason he chose not to sign with Chicago is because the Blackhawks traded his brother Jimmy away, Jimmy bad mouthed the organization and with that, Kevin refused to come to Chicago
Hayes wanted to sign with the Boston Bruins but the rumor was he burned a couple of bridges while at Boston College he has a very large family in New York was the best second choice on the table
The rangers were able to get some of these guys because at the time they were pressed against the cap but didn't have a lot of depth so these guys could come in get paid what they would end up getting paid anywhere they went but have a good chance of top six minutes
Sabres lost Cal Peterson to LA who looks to be their G of the future. However at the time he left we had no solid future G plans and I thought signing here would fast track him to the NHL
It's getting to be, if you're a good player, why play Major Junior? Go to Europe, college, stay in lower junior, because teams will choose a player they can put in the AHL or leave in a solid higher league.
Great video although there are lots players who bailed out on the team that drafted them players who actually did I this represent a very small percentage. Most college prospects end up signing with their team that drafted them.
It's so shitty that a player can be drafted by a team, just to say "I'm not signing with you" and going out to find the highest bidder or a more desirable destination. If a player is drafted, they should be forced to play one year with that team, or forfeit half their first years salary which gets sent to the team that drafted them
You say you're an Oilers fan, but you commonly state things out of time. The Oilers had Hall, Eberle, RNH, and other promising prospects that were developing fine. Yakupov was drafted the same summer Schultz was signed.
I feel that players shouldn't be allowed to not sign with the team who drafted them. Thought the NHL made a clause after the Lindros incident. If you don't sign with who drafted you then you don't get to play in the NHL ever
Just an idea but you should do a video of teams who have drafted players but never got the upside of them as they only grew into their potential after being traded
But there are restrictions, such as if you sign an NHL, AHL, or European contract, your education money goes kaput. Also, you have a certain amount of time to access it or you lose it. Don't get me wrong, it's a great incentive, but there are plenty of ways to make sure the teams don't have to pay a penny.
Connor McDavid. That's why they would want to play in Edmonton. Oh, have you ever been to Detroit? Buffalo? Really sexy cities like Denver? Or go to Miami or Phoenix and play for a shitty organization in front of zero fans. Or Dallas, and play to half empty building when you have a good team. Or watch people run riot in L.A. or New York, or Minnesota. Maybe Edmonton doesn't look so bad right now. Most guys that play in Canada say it was the best part of their career. I agree that the Oilers were run by a bunch of clowns...but not anymore. Watch how many celebrities show up to Kings' games, now that they suck. The Islanders play in New York and players can't get out of there fast enough. I think it has more to do with the organization, than where it's located. Quebec has a brand new building and a billionaire who wants to bring a team there but the league would rather have an empty building in North Carolina, again with a pretty good team. You'll notice that no one who played in Edmonton when Schultz played for them is still with the Oilers, except RNH. Why do you think they dealt Hall for Larsson? And why did N.J. dump Hall? Maybe Hall was the problem. Eberle too.
Has to do with taxes, I bet. Canadian tax rates are way higher than the U.S. but I'm happy some of the biggest superstars play on Canadian teams: Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes with the Canucks, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in Edmonton, Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk in Calgary, Mark Scheifele and Patrik Laine (along with Connor Hellebuyck, Nikolaj Ehlers and Blake Wheeler) in Winnipeg, Thomas Chabot and Brady Tkachuk in Ottawa (even though Melnyk scares away top-end talent), Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner in Toronto (along with John Tavares and William Nylander), and Shea Weber and Carey Price in Montréal. Not bad for only having 7 teams to have so much of the top talent in the whole league!
I think there should be some sort of penalty for not signing with your draft team. Like in ability to play in the nhl for 3 years. Lose some of that salary.
I remember the Schultz thing. He had i thin 3 teams he was gonna sign with, ottawa, Edmonton and Buffalo. But chose Edmonton for some reason. If he had chose my team, ottawa then he would've helped the team in the playoffs that year because i think ottawa beat Montreal in the first round. Edmonton ended up being dead last again that year lmao but I'm sure he doesn't regret playing in Pittsburgh now
Chase Priskie refused to sign with us(Caps) because he felt that there was too much Dman depth.... literally our only dman prospect better than Priskie right this moment is Martin Fehervary..
Understand they are not rejecting the team that drafted them they are rejecting league entry level contracts. By becoming a free agent they can sign what ever contract that is being offered to them so making more money and also choosing where to play.
NYR seems to be like Manchester United for American players for history and lights. I personally prefer the big lights of Los Angeles to New York but I realize my opinion is highly unpopular. SoCal weather can’t be beat and the parties are just as good as in NY. And don’t tell me that didn’t factor in cos that’s one of the things they think of when they come to the apple
Hayes was better off not signing with Chicago they had a lot of talent and I don’t think they would’ve been patient enough with him he probably would’ve been moved on somewhere else
I think every North American professional sports league (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS) should mandate at least a year of college before being drafted, since if it doesn't work out, you at least get a college education
I’m shocked this loophole actually exists. 1. It’s not fair to the teams that draft these players, that after 4 years of playing college they can go wherever they choose. 2. Not fair to other players who have to wait to enter unrestricted free agency. It’s just a bizarre loophole. A guy who hasn’t played one nhl game hasn’t earned the right to go wherever they want. At least that’s my opinion. Obviously the nhl feels differently
My team was well represented lol. Although calling Kevin Hayes a star is a serious stretch lol. I can think of multiple occasions where he was on a break away, completely untouched, lost his edge taking himself out of the play and not even getting a shot off. He's an AV guy though so he fleeced Philly for $50M, good riddance.
Has your team ever lost or gained a player due to this clause?!

College hockey gives you virtually unlimited development time that’s a huge issue for many junior players
Kevin Hayes feel off this season and will get worse that’s my prediction sorry not sorry
Jimmy was gahbage too
You clearly haven’t watched him play this year
He has never played a full season in his career either.
Great video although there are lots players who bailed out on the team that drafted them players who actually did I this represent a very small percentage. Most college prospects end up signing with their team that drafted them.
What’s with Harvard Alumni and not signing with who drafted you, apparently Harvard Alumni just all agree that they go to the Rangers no matter what
It's so shitty that a player can be drafted by a team, just to say "I'm not signing with you" and going out to find the highest bidder or a more desirable destination. If a player is drafted, they should be forced to play one year with that team, or forfeit half their first years salary which gets sent to the team that drafted them
We essentially gained Zach Hyman due to this. He wanted to play in Toronto, Florida knew, so they traded him there to at least gain something for him
You say you're an Oilers fan, but you commonly state things out of time.
Eh, the CHL gives all players full University scholarships for each year they're in the league, so not actually an advantage of playing in the NCAA.
I’m born and raised in Edmonton and I don’t understand why players would want to come here.
Clearly you've never had a bat-shit crazy ex you need to hide from
Haha I love the honesty!
Edmonton ended up being dead last again that year lmao but I'm sure he doesn't regret playing in Pittsburgh now
top players traded back to the team they were traded from originally eg. Kappanen
Chase Priskie refused to sign with us(Caps) because he felt that there was too much Dman depth.... literally our only dman prospect better than Priskie right this moment is Martin Fehervary..
The Hawks wouldn't have been able to keep Hayes anyway. Pretty much for the same reason they couldn't keep Panarin. Their cap situation still sucks.
Blake Wheeler? Wasn't he a college player that refused to sign with the team that drafted him?
I’m so surprised that they do not have a rule that if you don’t sign with the team they drafted you, then you don’t play ever in the NHL.
Understand they are not rejecting the team that drafted them they are rejecting league entry level contracts. By becoming a free agent they can sign what ever contract that is being offered to them so making more money and also choosing where to play.
Nope. First
Contract under the age 26 I believe must be an ELC
NYR seems to be like Manchester United for American players for history and lights. I personally prefer the big lights of Los Angeles to New York but I realize my opinion is highly unpopular. SoCal weather can’t be beat and the parties are just as good as in NY. And don’t tell me that didn’t factor in cos that’s one of the things they think of when they come to the apple
Can you extend this topic to include the likes of .. oh..i dunno... Eric Lindros not wanting to play for then Quebec Nordiques.
RJ Umberger comes to mind.
Yep, Umberger is the first guy that I thought of as well.
Who??
imagine how different the nhl would be if drafted players had to sign with their draft team.
I hope this loophole gets its head cut off in the next CBA. It serves absolutely no benefit to the NHLPA or NHL.
Yes I agree, or at the least be adjusted. Perhaps they have to wait 4 years minimum, their first contract can’t be as big etc
So the teams can do what they want with their "property," but the players have no rights? Hey, let's bring back the reserve clause.
Dude his name is KERfoot, not KEARfoot....and why is super Joe sakic in blackface in the picture you put in???? That's fkd up 6:05
Hayes was better off not signing with Chicago they had a lot of talent and I don’t think they would’ve been patient enough with him he probably would’ve been moved on somewhere else
I think every North American professional sports league (NBA, NFL, NHL, MLB, MLS) should mandate at least a year of college before being drafted, since if it doesn't work out, you at least get a college education
Lindholm pretty good steal. As for the loop hole it sucks. Kaprizov needs to be with the wild NOW
You can pick your team but if you don't give an effort or put up points you're gonna get traded anyways
I know not to say this on this channel, but I hope we could do this nhl 21 be a pro career
Didn’t this happen with Blake Wheeler?
I don’t get why the rangers like New York has high taxes and haven’t been that successful recently
Tim Erixon did the same thing to the Flames. Players play NCAA in Eastern USA, then want to be on the Rangers. Erixon busted and Flames fans laughed.
I say Yes for NHL Hockey
Blake wheeler drafted by Phoenix and then he signed with Boston
My team was well represented lol. Although calling Kevin Hayes a star is a serious stretch lol. I can think of multiple occasions where he was on a break away, completely untouched, lost his edge taking himself out of the play and not even getting a shot off. He's an AV guy though so he fleeced Philly for $50M, good riddance.
