GM of 1000IQ: Sam POLLOCK (habs 1970-1971) Sam Pollock set his eyes on the prize (pun intended) of the first overall pick in the 1971 draft. The draft was particularly interesting because there were two future legends that would be eligible: Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne. Either one would have been a fine selection, but legend has it that Pollock had his heart set on Guy Lafleur long before the draft itself. The problem was that the 1970-71 Canadiens were not in a position to be getting the number one pick. In fact, they won the Stanley Cup that year. Despite the team being quite successful, leading scorer Jean Beliveau was 39, playing in what would be his final season, and Pollock knew he needed to get some talent to replace him in the lineup. While the team had a great core of players, it needed a show-stopper and Pollock was looking at Guy Lafleur to be that guy. Since that was what he wanted, it was imperative that he make a move to get the pick that he would need in the draft. So, Sam set his sights on a team that is no longer a member of the National Hockey League: the California Golden Seals. If you don't know NHL history well, yes that was an actual team and you are right to laugh at their silly name. The Seals were quite a poor team in 1970-71 and it seemed they were poised for last in the NHL and thus the first overall pick. Figuring the Seals were bound for the last placed finish, Pollock persuaded Seals owner Charlie Finley to trade their first overall pick and Francois Lacombe to Montreal for the Habs' first round selection and Ernie Hicke. Many have said this was simply an example of Pollock taking advantage of an inexperienced owner, but you can't argue with the result. While the Canadiens now had the pick they wanted, the Los Angeles Kings began to play even more poorly than the Seals. Pollock was in danger of losing his first overall pick, which was unacceptable to the Habs GM. Pollock decided to try and give the Kings a little boost so that they would not wind up "winning" the first pick in the subsequent draft. He offered the aged-but-valuable Ralph Backstrom to the Kings, receiving in return Gord Labossiere and Ray Fortin. You've probably never heard the names Labossiere and Fortin, because they were both completely inconsequential players. Backstrom was instrumental in helping to lead the Kings out of the basement, finishing just ahead of the Seals, giving Montreal the first overall pick.
He also made a trade in 1976 i believe to get a 1980 1st round pick. That was the year Gretzky was to be available for the draft. Unfortunately the rules changed between 76 and 80 as the WHA and NHL merged he wasn't available for the draft. The 1st rounder did become the 1st overall pick that they instead used on Doug Wickenheiser

In 2016 the New York Rangers fleeced Ottawa for Mika Zibanejad and their second-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft for Derick Brassard and a seventh-round pick in 2018. Mika is now a legit top center in the NHL and still only 27, while Brassard is 33 and basically a 3rd line center.
Another Yzerman trade that is often overlooked: Steve Downie > COL for Kyle Quincey > Detroit > 1st round pick that became Andrei Vasilevsky. Turning Steve Downie into a franchise goalie is seriously noteworthy.
A 500 IQ trade was the one that brought Ron Francis to the Penguins from the Whalers, establishing the by far best #1 + #2 centers in the NHL for several years and ultimately bringing the Stanley Cup to Pittsburgh.
Hard to go past the trade that brought in Philip Danault to Montreal... Danault and a 2nd pick (which turned out as Alexander Romanov) for Dale Weise and Tomas Fleischmann, which both of them left after that season. There is also the Martin Erat and Michael Latta for Filip Forsberg that was a master trade by David Poile. Another one good move by Bergevin was trading Max Pacioretty for Nick Suzuki, Tomas Tatar and a 2nd round selection in 2019. This trade at first made Bergevin looks like a genius, although Max Pacioretty came back from the ashes the season after to have a good season. But it's still one of the best trade by Bergevin so far, even if the best ever trade for Bergevin was the acquisition of Philip Danault.
Rob if you’re ever struggling to balance school and the channel, as much as we all love you, prioritize school! As a fellow student I have my own struggles balancing things in my life and I’m sure your work load is WAY bigger than mine
I still remember the day the Stars traded for Tyler Seguin. The most underrated trade in NHL history, traded away 4 dying contracts for 3 absolute studs.
I can’t remember all the players involved but the Cliff Fletcher trades that brought Doug Gilmour to Toronto. Instantly elevated Toronto. Also the Clark for Sundin trade. At the time was unbelievable but in hindsight was genius
To be fair, the Point trade was mainly Al Murray. Murray showed him to Yzerman, and Murray called the Wild's Assistant GM to talk about what it would take to make sure they could get Point. Murray is one of the greatest scouts/draft wizards of the modern era, yet so many outside of Tampa don't realize it.
I feel that VGK might've screwed up after having done brilliantly... they might've have traded away too much of their future to try to win now (which they haven't)
Sure, but what if they hadn't traded away two of the players they drafted in the first round that first draft? I'm not saying it's a given, hence the "might've" - but I'm curious
Kyle Quincy/Steve Downie for Andrei Vasilevskiy Cory Conacher for Ben Bishop Steve Yzerman has really built this tampa bay lightning team into a potential dynasty. The core of tampa bay has gone very far in the playoffs multiple times (2011, 2015, 2016, 2018 and now 2020)
Great video as always man :) Honestly would love to see a video focussing on the Canucks and your opinions on the team and their off season ahead of them. I feel like this off season and how it plays out could make or break the Stanley cup window for this young team that appears to be just opening. I still feel sick every time I hear a Brock Boeser trade rumour...
Crazy how the Rask deal didn’t make the list. Biggest steal in leafs history. That was the best trade we ever made. Raycroft went on for years dominting the league for us
Hey man great vids! I used to love doing this shit free TH-cam days making geocities free websites lol. This is awesome to see. Obviously the Erik Karlsson trade is looking more and more like a steal for Ottawa but a few big ones came to mind Yashin for Chara, Mackult and 2nd overall (Jason Spezza) Hossa / Dupuis for Armstrong, Christensen, Esposito Can think of many more but keep up the great work! Love it
Sakic has made some really good trades recently. Kadri, Hutchinson, Rosen for Barrie and Kerfoot. Leafs likely do not resign Barrie. Hutchinson was clutch in the playoffs and Kadri proved his worth. Also, A second and a third for Andre Burakovsky, who had a career high in goals, assists, and points this season as well as was over a point per game in the playoffs.
As a Bruins fan- I'd have to give props to Bill Torrey of The Islanders- Both on trades and draft picks. 4 straight cups, that will never be done again...
On that note, I would nominate then-interim GM Jeff Gorton for building a Bruins team in two months in 2006 (including making that trade) that would go on to win the Stanley Cup five years later. Oh yeah, also trading Derick Brassard + a 7th to Ottawa for Mika Zibanejad + a 2nd as Rangers GM.
I'm a Bruins fan, so I don't have any bias, but honestly, I wonder if Joe Sakic would still be in Colorado if he weren't a franchise icon. I’m so glad for the Avalanche that they gave him the time. It always sucks when somebody builds a great core but gets fired so somebody else can get the credit. Some guys just know hockey. They can recognize talent on the ice, in the front office, and on the bench. Then there are guys like Peter Chiarelli who can't do anything.
Griffin Reinhart for 2015 16th overall pick (Mathew Barzal) and pick 33 (traded to Tampa along with pick 72 for pick 28 which got the islanders Anthony beauvillier)
As a Wings fan, Ken Holland made some bonehead trades to keep the playoff streak going for 25 years However getting a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd out of Tomas Tatar was absolute robber, and we wound up with Joe Veleno because of it
One I would have added was Pierre Dorion's Erik Karlsson trade. It is still too early to properly judge that trade, but it is looking more and more like San Jose lost that one big time; especially if you consider that Erik Karlsson's contract is looking like it might become an albatross. If one or more of Stützle, Norris or Balcers ends up being really good, I would say that Ottawa won that trade big time.
The Blue Jackets sent 3 draft picks that didn't pan out to Philadelphia in exchange for Sergei Bobrovsky. 2 Vezina trophies later, I'd say the Blue Jackets won that trade big time. It might be too early to judge that Vegas - Ottawa trade, we don't know who Ottawa may draft with that 2nd round pick in 2020 or who they might trade it for.
Super excited to see if the Kraken can replicate even a bit of what Vegas did. I'm sure GMs learned a lot since then, but with the exact same expansion rules AND the salary cap in our favor, it will be exciting.
Genuinely shocked Colorado - Rangers trade of Ryan Graves for Chris Bigras isn't on this. A one for one AHL depth D trade has given Colorado an at least top 6 defenceman that spends his time on the first line with Makar.
Kings raid Columbus twice for Carter and Gaborik, both made two Stanley Cups possible, which is more valuable than any of the other trades in the video. And we didn’t give up much, especially for Gaborik.
This wasn’t about value, it was about the more strategic mindset that went into a trade. Yes there has been more lopsided trade, but those could be sprung from the situation the team was in, aka Carter not wanting to be in Columbus and so LA took advantage of their situation. Whereas Steve Yzerman scouting Brayden Point and trading up last second to draft him, is very different
I was surprised how good this list was, no "oh this team got the way better player in the trade therefore it's a 500iq trade" which I expected, just genuinely awesome trades
I think the panthers taking Carter verhage or however it’s spelt was a great trade they took a 4th line guy from the Stanley cup champions and immediately fit him on the top lines for Florida proving he has the depth to be on those lines even against his former team mates
The notorious Scott Gomez has got to be on that list with McDonagh, Higgins going the other way. Gomez did zilch in MTL while being one of the top salaries league-wide at the time. I think he almost went a whole calendar year without scoring a goal. Highway robbery.
A classic that should have been on the list: Montreal trading for the Guy Lafleur pick. Montreal acquired the Seals' first round pick to get a shot at Guy Lafleur, as they rightly assumed they would be dogshit. Unfortunately, LA was worse than the Seals. So the Habs GM made a losing trade to improve them. It worked! LA got better and the Habs picked Lafleur at 1OA.
that's not a win lol. Canucks were offered 7OA additional pick and top prospect for Schneider by the Oilers. Which means, they could have gotten Horvat at 7, and had another pick and prospect. All because they didn't want to trade him in division that made no difference anyway in 4 years when Schneider would fall off a cliff
I still don't understand how Brayden Point who put up 91 points in 72 games in his draft year fell to the third round (79th overall). To make a comparison, Connor Bleackley who is also a center and roughly the same size was drafted in the first round 23rd overall after putting up 68 points in 71 games and he has yet to play an NHL game.
June 23,2011 flyers trade Richard for Wayne Simmonds and brayden schenn also trading Jeff carter for Sean couturier and jakub voracek. Schenn was traded later on for 2 first round picks, a 2017 first and 2018 first selecting two top prospects in Morgan frost and Joel Farabee
In 1990 the NJ Devils traded Tom Kurvers to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 1st round pick in 1991. The big star of that draft was one Eric Lindros. Lo and behold the Maple Leafs had a brutal season, and were in the running for the 1st overall (That would have to go to the Devils). Fortunately for Toronto they would finish with the SECOND worst record, and had to only surrender the 3rd overall pick instead of Lindros. UNFORTUATELY for Toronto the pick turned out to be Scott Niedermayer who would become one of the greatest defensemen in NHL history.
At the 2011 Draft the Ducks traded a 1st round pick (#22) to the Leafs for picks (#30) and (#39) With their pick the Leafs took Tyler Biggs while the ducks took Rickard Rakell and John Gibson. On day two of the same draft the Ducks traded their 6th round pick to the Leafs for a 2012 6th round pick. With that pick the Ducks took Josh Manson while the Leafs took Ryan Rupert in 2012. So in one draft Anaheim was able to select a starting goalie, top 6 winger and a top 4 dman. The Leafs draft two players who were fringe AHL guys spending most of their careers in the ECHL. Still pains me as a Leaf fan. On a side note the Ducks also drafted William Karlsson in 2011 but thst has nothing to do with the Leafs, just an insane draft for Anaheim.
I know this is about trades but Yzerman by far has produced some of the most absurd picks. Kucherov was taken 58th at the end of the 2nd Round in 2011. He is the only member of the 2011 class to make the NHL All-Star Team. How the hell he didn't get picked until the end of the 2nd is beyond me. Especially considering some of the trash that went before him. Ondrej Palat who is definitely not as good as some of the super stars is a real solid player has 16 points in the playoffs with 10 goals. He went 208th in 2011. Hell Anthony Cirelli maybe at All-Star level caliber in a few years and he went 72nd.
Steve Yzerman built that Lightning team, who the year after he moved on, won the cup. They better send him a fucking ring. Man is the MOST deserving of it.
In March of 2022 galaxy brain GM Steve Yzerman traded Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski to St Louis in exchange for Oskar Sundqvist, Jake Walman, and a 2nd in the 2023 draft. After a solid year of hockey for the Wings, Sundqvist was flipped to Minnesota for a 4th and Jake Walman is now a 1st pairing dman and a fan favorite in Detroit. Paired with Mo Seider they're also among the best dpair in the league analytically. Yzerman the wizard has also inked Walman to a bargain basement 3x$3.4m deal to ensure that the pairing remains in place. This already incredible trade only gets better when one considers that Leddy was not part of the long term plan in Detroit and we have to wait till after draft day to see what those 2nd and 4th rounders turn into. Yzerman is, imo, the best GM in the league, with Sakic the runner-up. Other GMs should just not answer the phone when these guys call...it can't end well for them.
I said Point was going to become a number 1 centre when he was rookie, I also said he was going to make Stamkos expendable. It’s great they finally won a Cup in this era but they may have to move him if he doesn’t retire.
I think it's a stretch to call the Yzerman draft pick trade up a 500 iq trade UNLESS Minnesota was actually going to pick Braden Point. But I HIGHLY doubt they would have. Therefore, Yzerman would have gotten Point at pick 80 anyways. So really he just likely gave away a 7th round pick for nothing.

Definitely! Thanks for the advice
Montreal in like 2007 with SJ
SJ got : Craig Rivet
MTL got : Josh Gorges and a 1st (Max Pacioretty)
Then flipped Max Pac for: Tatar, Norlinder and Suzuki. Thanks Craig!
I’m sure it’s on here somewhere, but NSH absolutely stealing Filip Forsberg from WSH for Erat and Latta.
This still haunts me
Love the videos!!! Its funny because i saw you when looking at reviews for an 8th gen civic si!!! Crazy how i watched you for 2 different reasons haha
What happened to your Canucks content earlier in the season?
I feel that VGK might've screwed up after having done brilliantly... they might've have traded away too much of their future to try to win now (which they haven't)
Their prospect pool was ranked #10 last year...
Sure, but what if they hadn't traded away two of the players they drafted in the first round that first draft? I'm not saying it's a given, hence the "might've" - but I'm curious
@@elwizschold Considering Stone and Patches are their two best offensive players I would say they would be worse.
It's possible, only time will tell what players like Erik Brannstrom will become.
@@chengliu872 and other players like Cody Glass
Did you get a new mic recently? The sound quality is sounding a lot better!
I don’t usually like videos on TH-cam but I want you to keep making more so Ive liked every one I watched !
Kyle Quincy/Steve Downie for Andrei Vasilevskiy
Cory Conacher for Ben Bishop
Steve Yzerman has really built this tampa bay lightning team into a potential dynasty.
Talk about more draft busts I love it!!
Crazy how the Rask deal didn’t make the list. Biggest steal in leafs history. That was the best trade we ever made. Raycroft went on for years dominting the league for us
LOL
Hey man great vids! I used to love doing this shit free TH-cam days making geocities free websites lol. This is awesome to see.
Obviously the Erik Karlsson trade is looking more and more like a steal for Ottawa but a few big ones came to mind
Yashin for Chara, Mackult and 2nd overall (Jason Spezza)
Hossa / Dupuis for Armstrong, Christensen, Esposito
Can think of many more but keep up the great work! Love it
Sakic has made some really good trades recently.
Does the Kapanen trade count?
Phil Danault for Tomas Fleischmann and Dale Weise. Underrated
As a Bruins fan- I'd have to give props to Bill Torrey of The Islanders- Both on trades and draft picks. 4 straight cups, that will never be done again...
raycroft for rask
Btw im a leaf fan, best leafs trade
Obviously a joke
Jayden Luff I figured, anybody who supports the leafs is a joke.
@@Underdogbassist your so full of crap your toilet would be jealous
@@Underdogbassist now that i gave you 10 minutes to roll your eyes can you please continue maybe you eventually find a brain
Andrada Music 😂😭😂
Canucks trading Cory Schneider for the 9th overall pick (Bo Horvat)
Low key man you're intros are fire
Haha thanks dude
Griffin Reinhart for 2015 16th overall pick (Mathew Barzal) and pick 33 (traded to Tampa along with pick 72 for pick 28 which got the islanders Anthony beauvillier)
As a Wings fan, Ken Holland made some bonehead trades to keep the playoff streak going for 25 years
However getting a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd out of Tomas Tatar was absolute robber, and we wound up with Joe Veleno because of it
Flyers have fleeced teams in the past acquiring draft picks and prospects that all pan out it’s crazy
Love the channel, keep it up dude!
Steve Y is a wizard of a gm
He plays 4d chess
The Blue Jackets sent 3 draft picks that didn't pan out to Philadelphia in exchange for Sergei Bobrovsky. 2 Vezina trophies later, I'd say the Blue Jackets won that trade big time.
It might be too early to judge that Vegas - Ottawa trade, we don't know who Ottawa may draft with that 2nd round pick in 2020 or who they might trade it for.
Sens moving up to get Karlsson is a franchise changing move.
Always a great a video. You deserve so much more credit
To VGK:
Paccioretty
To MTL:
Thomas Tatar
Nick Suzuki
Second round pick (Alexander Romanov)
Super excited to see if the Kraken can replicate even a bit of what Vegas did. I'm sure GMs learned a lot since then, but with the exact same expansion rules AND the salary cap in our favor, it will be exciting.
I thought the rules were different for Vegas?
Genuinely shocked Colorado - Rangers trade of Ryan Graves for Chris Bigras isn't on this. A one for one AHL depth D trade has given Colorado an at least top 6 defenceman that spends his time on the first line with Makar.
How did you not mention the ROR trade here
Griffin Reinhardt from NY for the Oilers 16th Ovr and 33rd. NYI picked Mathew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier
Mr. Brian Burke acquiring both the sedins for Vancouver was 500 for sure
A+ Title Rob! Keep up the amazing work my guy😄
I can think of a -500 iq trade, Penguins giving up a first rounder for Ryan Reaves 😂
their 1st rounders at the time were basically 2nd rounders cause they were always up there in the standings.but A 1st for Reaves? are you serious lol
Irvine Poker even a 4th rounder would be pushing it for Reaves 😂
@@skyguy1230 lmao
Max Pacioretty for Thomas Tatarrrr, Nick Suzuki n a third round (Mathias Norlinder)
Pacioretty is still the best player involved in that trade. It’s was a win win for both teams
I was surprised how good this list was, no "oh this team got the way better player in the trade therefore it's a 500iq trade" which I expected, just genuinely awesome trades
How about the Flames and St. Louis? Doug Gilmour, Steve Bozek and Mark Hunter, after getting Lanny from Toronto?
Ah yes Steve Eisman
I think the panthers taking Carter verhage or however it’s spelt was a great trade they took a 4th line guy from the Stanley cup champions and immediately fit him on the top lines for Florida proving he has the depth to be on those lines even against his former team mates
Stan Bowman got RIPPED for Panarin but since he left Columbus is isn't quite 500IQ.
35k subs at this time. Good work hockey brother. 🤘
The notorious Scott Gomez has got to be on that list with McDonagh, Higgins going the other way. Gomez did zilch in MTL while being one of the top salaries league-wide at the time. I think he almost went a whole calendar year without scoring a goal. Highway robbery.
Jim Benning -500 IQ trades
A classic that should have been on the list: Montreal trading for the Guy Lafleur pick.
Montreal acquired the Seals' first round pick to get a shot at Guy Lafleur, as they rightly assumed they would be dogshit. Unfortunately, LA was worse than the Seals. So the Habs GM made a losing trade to improve them.
It worked! LA got better and the Habs picked Lafleur at 1OA.
The Blues fleeced the Sabres in the ROR trade. Might be the best trade in Blues history considering the Cup.
Toronto got this defencemen idr his name in exchange for the 1991 first round pick to New Jersey, that pick? Scott Nedermeyer
Oooh that would be Tom Kurvers, the one-hit wonder
Coleman B. The GM of NJ had IQ 10000
canucks trade schneider to the devils for the 9th overall pick in 2013, which turned into their future captain, bo horvat
that's not a win lol.
Wow now that's a hit
I'm a preds fan but the trade they did. giving up Martin Erat and Michael Latta for Filip Forsberg was a good trade. kind of a steal from caps :)
The picks for the Brayden Point trade were Louis Belpedio and a 2015 7th round pick
The steve Yzerman Drouin management i think should be here considering he managed to get Sergachev back
That trade was another smart trade Steve made.
TBL traded Drouin to MTL for Sergachev, now one of them is a Stanley cup champion.. with sergachev being an absolute key piece in winning the cup.
The Calgary flames trading for miikka kipursoff for a second round pick was a psychic move
I like how for all the highlights in the Vegas part was flurry
These are some nasty trades
keep up the good job Rob!
I haven’t watched this, and I don’t need to for me to know it is going to be a banger like the rest
prediction: rob hits 50k before the summer
Woahhh
As a Wild fan, this video ruined my day lol
At least we have the Fiala-Granlund trade 😅
Can you say. Caesar. Maniago
I said Point was going to become a number 1 centre when he was rookie, I also said he was going to make Stamkos expendable. It’s great they finally won a Cup in this era but they may have to move him if he doesn’t retire.
Love the vids! Keep it up
I wouldn't consider adding a 7th round pick a gutsy move, but it was definitely a smart one
There's also the Mikka Kiprusoff trade to Calgary from San Jose for a 4th rounder.
Bergevin should be on here
I think it's a stretch to call the Yzerman draft pick trade up a 500 iq trade UNLESS Minnesota was actually going to pick Braden Point. But I HIGHLY doubt they would have. Therefore, Yzerman would have gotten Point at pick 80 anyways. So really he just likely gave away a 7th round pick for nothing.
