  • Bibury is a beautiful and historic village in the Cotswolds, that attracts millions of visitors every year.
It's located between Cirencester and Burford, on the banks of the River Coln.
Bibury is often referred to as the "most beautiful village in England," a sentiment attributed to the famous textile designer, William Morris. But its beauty and charm have been attracting people for centuries. The village is actually two villages combined into one, with Bibury occupying the eastern bank of the River Coln, while the ancient village of Arlington sits on the western bank.
The village dates back to the early Iron Age and can still be seen at the nearby Raw Barrow Camp, a univallate hillfort dating from that period.
Arlington Row, a set of 17th-century weavers' cottages that now belong to the National Trust. These picturesque cottages started out life as a 13th Century wool store, but have become an iconic symbol of Bibury, appearing in countless postcards and tourist brochures.
The river meanders through the village, providing stunning views of the surrounding countryside. One of the highlights of Bibury is the beautiful St. Mary's Church, which dates back to the end of the 8th century. The church is steeped in history and features a Saxon gravestone embedded in its outer wall.
Bibury's mills, including the famous Arlington Mill, were crucial to the production of wool in the region. The weavers would hang the washed wool out to dry on racks on Rack Isle and produce cloth within the cottages. Today, Bibury Trout Farm is a popular tourist destination, farming delicious trout that are a favourite of locals and tourists alike.
Walking trails and public footpaths crisscross the countryside, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of Bibury. From abandoned Roman roads to Iron Age hill forts, there is something for everyone. The Catherine Wheel pub, a 15th-century coaching inn, and the Swan Hotel, a popular wedding venue, offer a warm welcome to weary travellers.
