      Resistance 2 was a good game but the weakest of the series. Resistance 3 was fantastic as it was about what was left of humanity trying to survive in a war it had lost. Remember not all stories have to have the happy ending to make them a amazing story and if something like Resistance did happen in real life then we would probably loose.

    Counter point. Although it didn’t save the United States as a country, it might have still saved mankind. The Chimeran fleet was devastated, which allowed Nathan Hale to destroy the remainder with a single crude atomic weapon.
    If the fleet had been intact by the time of Resistance 3 then the Chimeran death squads would been completely unstoppable, and there’s no way Joseph Capell would have succeeded in his mission to destroy the wormhole tower in New York.
    Personally, I think the attack on the Liberty Defence Perimeter is a case of winning the battle but losing the war. Thoughts?

      I think the destruction of the chimerian fleet only really delayed the end. By the end of Resistance 2, humanity's population had been reduced to 10% and the chimeria's last real threat SRPA and the United States armed forces was defeated. So I mean even if the fleet had or hadn't been destroyed, it wouldn't have mattered.

    • @Bustermachine
      @Bustermachine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I disagree. The Chimera are pretty monofocused and most likely the entire fleet would still have concentrated over the gulf of Mexico densely enough to be taken out.

    • @adamw9421
      @adamw9421 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Perfectly written. And also, with only 10% of humanity being left, the chimera were unable to create the vast amount of hybrids and other Chimeran types that they could before. Humanity being almost destroyed caused the chimera to struggle with creating new soldiers

  • @westernspirit6399
    @westernspirit6399 2 ปีที่แล้ว +316

    Resistance is imo the best depiction of the War of the Worlds scenario. The "aliens" are actually infected people (among other living things) from a near incurable virus; we never get to fight the actual "pure" Chimera so who knows how powerful they really are. Setting the game in a retro 1950s timeline creates a larger tech gap between humans and the aliens. Victories against the Chimera are only minor setbacks (ex: abandon angel command structure; conversion centers to spinners; building spaceships & drones). With most of humanity wiped out the survivors had to abandon "Resistance" and simply try to survive on a Earth controlled by the Chimera.
    Most games/movies that depict a war against aliens always showcase humanity having a stronger success when fighting back. Resistance on the other hand creates a situation in which the humanity's fight in utterly pointless.

    • @Mrlighthouse1000
      @Mrlighthouse1000 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Although it is true that postapocalyptic settings are usually inspired by Mad Max, the Resistance setting is barely postapocalyptic to begin with, you could call it "apocalyptic", but the chimeras threaten to completely erradicate humanity unlike more focused postapocaliptic settings like nuclear holocausts or zombie pandemics that simply make life more difficult for the survivors

    • @ekszentrik
      @ekszentrik ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Mrlighthouse1000 Yes I agree, good point. I guess scenarios such as the one in Resistance are so uncommon that it's somewhat of a perception gap where it fits regarding post-apocalyptical vs. just apocalyptical (the latter also being a rare genre). For example, something like Neon Genesis Evangelion is purely apocalyptical, because humanity still retains most of its warfighting and economical capacity (bear with me, in-universe they actually DID have an "apocalypse" that killed like half of the world, but they recovered and the setting is NOT post-apocalyptical. They have the tech and industry to build giant robots).
      In Resistance, meanwhile, humanity is both *already* degraded, and is now being even _further_ degraded. Also, humanity has already ceded a lot of territory to the invaders (Eurasia), which is unlike the case with traditional apocalyptic fiction like Eva. So, definitely, it's a hybrid scenario. If humanity weren't already degraded significantly (like in a post-apocalypse), the setup would just be way less interesting IMO.
      As said, such "humanity being pushed back, not defeated" stories are just way too rare, full stop. Another example would be Muv-Luv Alternative, where humanity (also) has given up most of mainland Eurasia to the invaders, and is currently fighting in Japan and Kamchatka.

    I disagree with the statement "Fixed Defenses are a monument to the stupidity of Mankind" I would honestly say Fixed defenses are extremely useful, while not by themselves capable of stopping an attack, do provide enough of a speed bump and damage against an assaulting opponent that permit time and resources to counter attack the assaulting force. While a continuous defensive wall is impractical in most cases, the defense of strategic areas via fixed defenses coupled with localized independent unit to provide local and regional counter attacks is a highly effective strategy.
    As for the Liberty defense zone, if it was shrunk from it's initial plan, which the games seem to suggest. The strategists should have begun work on a defense in depth system, so that the breach of the "outer" defensive system does not mean the complete collapse of the entire defensive system. On top if that, resources permitting, compartmentalization of the entire defensive line would have been highly desirable. This method of having defensive compartments within the liberty zone would function akin to the compartmentaliztion of a warship, meaning that if one area was overrun by the Chimera would not have meant the entire zone be overrun, while also giving surviving generals in the Liberty zone the ability to properly judge and execute counter attacks by keeping all fighting within an overrun compartment, and "hopefully" when they fully retake the compartment they have a ready made defensive line in the previously overrun towers that can be refurbished and reequip, with the insight on the weak spots of the defensive line due to where they where broken prior.

    • @jackstrawful
      @jackstrawful 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I was thinking much the same thing, fixed defenses could be very effective, as long as they're operated properly, put in the right locations with plenty of redundancies, or, as you say, compartments. Whatever general said that was probably over-reacting to the failure of the Maginot line, but that failed because it was too easily bypassed west of the Franco-German border, not because of any inherent flaw in the very concept of fixed defenses.

      Yeah the General that said "Fixed fortifications are a monument to the st*pidity of mankind" doesn't realize that fixed defenses COULD have worked.
      Mustafa Kemal Ataturk once said something like "A defensive grid line doesn't exist, there is only a defensive grid area. That area is the entirety of this Country."
      This is also why Romans built a bunch of forts to defend their land instead of one big wall like the Chinese did.
      A wall mind you is like a chain, it only needs one link to break for the entire thing to fall apart and that's because when a wall gets overrun on one side, that's kinda all that's needed to overrun the entire wall.
      Instead if you have multiple bastions and fortresses concentrated on the entire area with a multitude of trenches and underground tunnels all over the place then the LDP could have worked because even if one bastion or all trenches are overrun, they still have many many Many more left to overrun and by that point, it's easy to say the Chimeras would probably be willing for a ceasefire.

Resistance 3 set up an atmosphere I personally couldn’t get enough of. The way the Chimera had lost by winning just gave me the chills. Among all the major FPS and TPS franchises that I ranted about undermined by trilogy format(Halo 3, Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3, Killzone 3, Dead Space 3 and so on) I kind of forgot that Resistance also was left hanging:(
    To specify, most devs build up to massive conflict for two games, first one is introduction to setting, second one sets the stakes. But then they leave themselves with only a single game to show the peak of said conflict(and sometimes even its breakout) and conclude it all. Within single game! Usually the series outgrows that trilogy expectation and thus the developers have to return the same villain that they've just wiped out with coloured energy wave plot gun that kills all enemies everywhere(Halo, Crucible, Lightmass Machine, Helghast Bomb, Precursor Marker Weapon and so on).
    And I know that Halo 2 and 3 were planned as one game at first. I still thing that Halo 3 should have been split into trilogy of its own. Mass Effect should have ended Shepherd saga and just switch to new protagonist for Reaper War arc. It's hard to come with alternative for Gears. Killzone should have ended about 20 minutes earlier with Helghan general still surviving and the corporate executive escaping with a small fleet in unknown direction.

    • @toddclawson3619
      @toddclawson3619 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah. This bizarre obsessive need to make everything a trilogy during that time period was pretty weird. Stories that would have been better fit for less or more movies/games were either dragged out or compressed to make it fit a trilogy. It wasn't just shooter games that had this happen. Xenosaga also was turned into a trilogy after initially being planned for six games. The story took a lot of cuts and other issues and pretty obviously suffered for it.

    So if the US managed to stalemate the Chimera behind the Perimeter the Chimera, or at least the weaker strains, would eventually die off.
    A lot of the plan was wishful thinking but it did take the full might of the Chimera bringing everything they had to break the Liberty Defense Perimeter and at this late stage there weren't really whole lot of other options.
    Maybe if Noah Grace had used his, YEARS of advanced warning about the Chimera things would have been better, since the intel implies that FDR knew about the Chimera in the 1930s before Grace was elected in 1940.

    Whoever wrote this game layout was seriously underqualified. 90 mm sounds like a lot until you realize that a 50 caliber round and a 30 mm round are almost the same size. 90 mm is only about a 3.5 in Shell which is nowhere near what you would use on a defensive emplacement like they describe. For comparison Coast guard vessels will normally be equipped with this size of weapon on their smallest vessels. Standard US Navy weapons will be 5 in which is closer to 130 mm , and the sort of weapon that they are showing in the illustration would be a 9-in naval gun, or in excess of 200 mm. The idea that the central us could not provide sufficient food for the US population is also seriously an error, but unless you happen to work in agriculture you wouldn't know that.

    I enjoyed this series and thought the lore was fascinating, but the United States somehow keeping its citizens in the dark about the chimera always bothered me. It makes sense that Russia was able to keep them hidden as the chimera were only in their country at that point and I can see them doing something stupid like trying to fight it by themselves without any assistance. I also understand and even think it works that the U.S. tried to bury its head in the sand and hope the chimera would just stay in Europe as the U.S. was extremely isolationist before WW2, but what was even the point of lying and saying that it was some sort of plague that was decimating Europe instead of the chimera? Even if no forms of communications or survivors managed to make their way to the U.S. and alert everyone of what was really happening and the U.S. was able to completely block off all contact from the outside world initially, there is no way that would last. People would be wanting to know what the heck is going on and I doubt they would be fine with such extreme measures for long. Even a really dangerous plague wouldn't justify such restrictions as its not like such a thing could transmit over telegrams, radio, or phones. The U.S. would have had to turn into a totalitarian government to implement such control and there is nothing in the lore that says they magically did so at some point.

    The towers are each MUCH wider than 50 feet, and building 38,000 steel skeleton towers over a thousand feet tall, and sturdy enough to support multiple automatic naval caliber guns in an insane manufacturing accomplishment. By comparison, WW2 mobilization cranked out 50,000 Sherman tanks and 3,000 liberty ships, both of which require a fraction of the amount of steel alone.
    My guess is somebody got their napkin math wrong when they wrote the document for the game.
    More likely, the towers would be spaced so each cluster could support the tower cluster to its left and right. So you're probably looking at between 300 and 500 towers if the space puts each tower within the firing of its neighboring strongpoints.

Giving up most of the land (especially most of the DEFENSIBLE land in the mountains and forests) and pouring your hopes into static defenses is insanity. I hope you tear this apart.

      To be fair, As pointed out, the defense perimeter was more out of desperation than anything else. They knew they wouldn't be able to defend most of the United States and were correct in that assessment when the majority of its military was destroyed in the initial invasion and the remnants were basically facing off against an entire world controlled by the chimera. Trying to fight like you suggested probably wouldn't have worked out any better. The game itself does agree with you though that it wasn't a reliable defense. Pretty much all static defenses in Europe were easily bypassed or overwhelmed by the Chimera and the Liberty Defense Perimeter only lasted a few weeks before it was breached. That was kind of the point though. The United States never moved on from its isolationist ideology due to the lack of WW2 and as a result, tried to bury its head in the sand and hope it would be left alone rather than trying to fight the Chimera in Europe when it and the rest of the world might have had the chance to win.

    Always wondered how it worked out with putting it in the middle of the United States. I'd think they would choose a coast since it has many more resources and people

      Since the invasion fleets were showing up from across the oceans, it would have meant the perimeter would have to bear the full weight of the initial attacks, which when adding faster arrivals for chimeran reinforcements from asia or europe would have meant an early breach would be almost guaranteed

    Fixed fortifications are moronic if you do NOT have an industry and civilian population under attack or to protect/ if they are mobile, if your main base is completely safe. Otherwise you NEED to play defensively. Static emplacements are commonly NEVER meant to be an effective defense line. They are meant to buy time to regroup and come up with a solution to the current situation. In resistance, the Liberty Defense Perimeter was ok. The problem was that it was used as a line of defense instead of stalling. It was also a single line, not layered. It would have been better to simply break up all necessary industrial and military elements for raiding ops and portability(make soldiers and civilians self-sufficient). I mean really, all of Europe, Asia and Africa fall and the Liberty wall was thought to hold the Chimera back and initiate a stalemate? Against billions of bodies in humans alone?
    Great breakdown as with every other video.

    Whoever designed that perimeter sure did NOT do their homework! Outside the "Enemy" menace, everything presented does not make sense (like most but not all politicians both in and out of uniform).

    It has always infuriated me that in a downfall scenario is that the ones who would get us into the mess (politicians) are the ones who get prioritized and be the ones who will survive. Only to re- infect the new world.

    Looking at the map, I'm not seeing the logic behind where the perimeter was built. It seems like they made more work for themselves than necessary while not protecting anything specific.
