    I had to click on this to see who would have the audacity to body-shame guinea pigs. Their rotund, butternut-squash shape is the IDEAL body type! However I did find this to be an informative video :)

    Roxy @2:48 - I just always want to kiss a piggy in that adorable neck area (and tummy!) - her mouth is so cute looking for food! One other reason I have had for baldness is during pregnancy (sometimes). The vet said make sure they get the proper nutrition - maybe a bit of kale to replenish what they are losing in vitamins during pregnancy. One other reason - a naughty piggy eating another piggy's hair! I had one piggy mama that ate her daughter's hair. We had to separate them. Her hair grew back afterward, thankfully. Just needed a little TLC after that! We never figured out why her mama did this. She didn't do it to any other piggy! As for eyes, Ruby eyes rock (Scotty did a song for this! hehe). I guess it is like some people about black dogs. People just shy away from certain animals for wacky reasons.

Tho I think she does have ovarian cysts, but for my others who have had that the vet said to just leave them be, would you recommend that too, or giving pain killer/anti inflam like metacam?

    I had a guinea pig named nugget, and he was so kind, sweet, smart, silly, generous, and happy. Every time I went into the room he would smile and weak at me, and then I would pet him and he would purr. He kept his cage clean, he even could play some board games. But then sadly he got bumble foot, I tried to help him as much as I could, but then it got to the point were he didn’t even want to eat. We fed him crushed up fruit and used a tool to feed it to him. One night when I went into his room...
    And he never woke up 😖

    Very informative, I would like to add something that might also help others,I noticed one of my piggies had a cataract starting so I took her to the exotic vet,turns out she has diabetes, very treatable in guinea pigs,so she is on a medication called glipizide twice a day and no fruits or sugary veg and no kibble or nuggets because she needs to keep her weight down .So lots of hay, she is now on reduced medication and soon might be able to come off it altogether. Hope this info also helps .love the videos 🥰

Had a divider and lid over him with the intention of neutering him and bringing him into the girls world eventually *Bart for short **Bartholomew** managed to scramble in. Talked to the rescue and all ready for birth in about 30 days!!! Already found an owner that wants (2) praying for two girls to give and a boy to keep for Bart. We will make it work though whatever she has.

    All my Abby's get spurs and dry hard skin. The gorgeous guineas foot cream is wonderful. Since I started to use it on a regular basis my piggies feet are a lot better and they seem to enjoy the foot massages. Worth having it shipped across the pond.
    Ginger, one of my senior abby's does have what looks like fatty eye on one side. It gets red and inflamed, so I am currently treating it with an ointment from the vets. I really don't think a surgical option at her age is wise and the ointment does sooth it. As for that white milky eye secretion, she sometimes produces a large amount and it looks like milk tears. Is this ok as long as it's not too frequent?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ah, maybe its an Abby thing - as Phoebe and Roxy are part Abby! I may have to invest in some foot ointment :)
      If the ointment soothes her eye that is good bless her. Yes I think it's find if there's a little more - I've had piggies produce more than others and as long as it clears up within a few minutes I don't think there's any cause for concern.

She's been to the vet and stuff, but I'm looking for more information on it and how to help her and what to be prepared for. She eats fine, runs like nothings wrong, and doesn't seem to have an issue getting around. Articles and advice would be helpful!

    Hi Sarah! We love you & the piggies! We always watch your vids! Right now we have some issues going on with a couple piggies in diff enclosures
    ...Can you pls tell me what could be going on if female piggy- not a year old til May, sounds like a LRI and we went from sulfa to doxy antibiotics.... On doxy she seemed to have gotten over it.... However, just 2 days later all the noises are back and shes heavy breathing again! We were in the middle of getting antibiotics replaced during the days she was well, and when she sounded bad again- we had just gotten the rx again... But hadnt given it to her yet. So this is 2nd round of doxy- which i saw is rarely perscribed in the UK.... I trust care a lot more in places like the UK as the US mostly only cares about $ .....I know your not a vet- but all the vets around us pretend to know and do not! I cant stand her going thru this! Shes american short hair piggy named Maple.... Shes still running to the veg bowl, pellet bowl, and to fresh hay.... I am so confused on whats going on with her and i need advice, im scared for her when shes really bad like that! She nvr had other symptoms except maybe sneezing - which i cant 100% verify it was her, as shes in a trio - and i hv others as well... No eye stuff, no snotty nose...she is up & down in wt by tenths of oz wise, sometimes a few.... Her eyes look alittle sunk in... As if shes dehydrated. I added a water bowl, i give her oxbow critical care & echinacea, child life viatmin c, benebac, her antibiotics, and the day before yest i also gave her little remedies gas drops. Shes in a 6x2 c&c cage (& 2x2 loft) with her original bond mate Koya (Sequoia) who is another American short, and an abby named Willow but who is lovingly called Baby Pig .... They are the trio of trees 😂.... Anyway no one else is sick in the enclosure.... They have a hay box that i put yesterday's news bedding in the bottom of and had changed it to something similar. I also had given different hay... I have since changed the hay & bedding back wondering if the issue could be dust from either or both, & causing either asthma or allergies?! Changing bi seemed to help possibly...it also seems like deep clean, full cage change over might possibly help as both times she seemed better were cage change days! i cant gurantee it wasnt meds or some other factor that just coincided tho! i use small broom g dust pan and clean them daily 1 or 2x per day depending on whats needed.They are on fleece, and I change the fleece liner 1x per wk.Pls pls any info would greatly help idk wether to call the vets and try for a diff antibiotic again.... Or which 1 would be best, and sadly i need to kno to tell the vets bc they also do not know! I cant see her go thru this and not even know if im treating her properly, or if im totally missing the mark n just putting her thru things for nothing. Right now she appears to be doing great i cant hear all the noise and i cant see her breathing hard.... But like i said it has come & gone a couple times! Last wk i thought she was doing better...
    By the evening she was bad again. Another thing i have also tried is running a hot shower and sitting with her in the bathrm, while it ran to open her lungs up a couple diff times. We are desperate! Pls any info would help! This has been going on around a month now gv or take a few days in either direction! She runs aroynd like hersrlf and chows down like herself except for on 2 or 3 seperate occasions on diff days where she was at the worst.... Other than that thru this whole time she has still been very much Maple-y lol...i just want her better and im losing my mind here!

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael, sorry to Maple has been unwell! By LRI do you mean lower respiratory infection and if so have the vets confirmed this? You may be able to see this on xray (white spotting in the lungs). Usually a longer course of antibiotics is required and that could be the actual issue here if the vets are only prescribing 7/10 day courses and there are gaps between each one. Lyra was on Sulfatrim 0.2 ml twice daily (prescribed by very experienced gp vet, and she only weights 800g) for 6 weeks to clear an infection in the lungs. You are right in that doxy is not usually prescribed here in the UK - perhaps ask for a longer course of the Sulfatrim? You could also get her some diuretic - when she's feeling bad this could be due to fluid build up in the lungs, and diuretic can do wonders for turning this around in a matter of hours, you can just use 0.2 - 0.5 ml as and when you feel she needs it, up to 3 times daily. Heavy breathing could also indicate heart problems - www.theguineapigvet.co.uk/post/my-guinea-pig-is-breathing-heavy-let-s-talk-about-heart-disease. Also I'm not sure about the bathroom thing, we should be careful with increasing humidity and I think best not to do this. If you're not sure about the vets I think you can find recommended guinea pig vets on US forums, sometimes non-exotics will specialise in guinea pigs too, and always ask for the specific vet you want to see and ask them about their experience etc too :) Hope this helps!

    • @michaelbrewer3004
      @michaelbrewer3004 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for your reply and everything you said! So the vet is treating based on past URI! Back when we first got her (Maple and Koya both!) @ 2months old, both the girlies had URI So vet is perscribing the antibiotics based on that, and changed from sulfa to doxy bc 10days she was still not doing better....🤦🏼‍♀️. So they thought bc she was perscribed the sulfa before maybe thats why it wasnt helping now.Like a built up immunity type issue....or LRI...yes lower respiratory infection... However yes, you are thinking right: Are they really perscribing the meds without even seeing her again...even though they havent been to the vet for 7 or 8 months?!? Yes! Unfortunately so! They say no need to see her bc they saw her for this issue before.... Wait..... What?! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ I feel on my own with this and so unsure! I read the article in the link you had in your response to us (we are a married couple- piggy mom & dad: jess & mike lol) she doesnt have any of the other issues dealing with heart failure/ heart issue.... Obs i dont have an xray to see 😔 but judging on looking @, feeling her body, and listening to her ...she sounds like a congested kid or an asthematic one.... possibly...and when its bad and you hear it, u can also see it in her rib area like the piggy in the vid in article but possibly worse....but you can hear it the whole time tho. It does sound like she has fluid in her lungs. She is still acting like herself and diving into all the food types they get lol. So i saw it said spiralactone or furosemide for diuretics like you mentioned.... How do i get those for piggies? I looked it up and i saw petco having one of them.... It did not say for piggies tho....Is there anyway you can give me a link to a trusted one for piggies? I know you already said the amount and up to 3x a day(depending in how she is doing).... I just need to know one i can buy and use for her right away. I wish i could show you her and you could hear her! Right now shes not sounding bad... Like its not audible right now ... In fact, right now, You could be easily fooled into thinking she was completely fine and healthy! But i know its not gone based on everything we've went thru with it, and the fact that her being audible and at her worst was only a few days ago! I have a whole bottle of sulfa - they actually gave both sulfa and doxy when they rewrote a few days ago... Im thinking of just doing sulfa again and sticking with it... Is this what you would do sulfa, and the things i was doing, & diuretics? In the meantime im of course going to continue looking for a vet with tru piggy knowledge! Its just hard bc they say they kno and they actually do not! Ive tried four! FOUR!! Smh. I knew more than every1 of them and the one which bragged about 35 years experience, told me ridiculous things that no vet would tell you to do with a sick piggy! Not these days anyway! She didnt even know about fleece! Or benebac! 🤦🏼‍♀️ I cant go to all them doing guess and check! i need a for sure knowledgeable, good guinea vet! I am currently in northeast Pennsylvania.... I will would never recommend getting piggies, or any pet, without knowing of a knowledgeable vet for that species! Not just seeing a lot in the area either, actually meeting them; asking a lot of good questions, and for sure being prepared beforehand is the only way to go!

    One of my guinea pigs EYE (not eyeS) looks like the eye is bulging out causing the surrounding area to fit out and you can see the red lines in the eye socket of the guinea pig. Should I be worried?

    Is there anyway to distinguish the difference between the "washing discharge" & discharge from an eye infection?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  ปีที่แล้ว

      The normal washing one is only when they are washing themselves and goes away within a few minutes. Bad discharge will hang around and go crusty. And if their eye is sore it will often close a bit or may have a blue sheen to it (eye ulcer from a hay poke or other damage).

    I'm keeping an eye on Amaya's back legs as they look quite pink. The outside cage has a metal bottom. The only reason is because my sister told me to as piggies dig. They are spending more time inside now that it's getting cooler and they have a huge C&C cage. They no longer fit in my palm 🤔. Their back legs now dangle. So cute when they are palm size.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Piggies definitely don't dig, I would suggest removing the wire bottom and if you are worried about other animals getting you could maybe dig some mesh in around the sides. But a huge C&C cage inside sounds wonderful!

    My new piggy has ah uh, tini tiny tail ❤️ it was so weird when I first felt a pointy thing on her but. But it’s right where the tail could be. Also it’s under the skin so I would have no clue what else it could be!

    Hello! I am sorry for asking but because of you I want to adopt my own Guinea pig, I’ve done my research and there’s just one thing I can’t seem to look up. It’s “is it ok to have a sound machine on in your Guinea pig’s room?” See I live in a very tiny house and my brother can have a reputation of… annoying-the animals. So I just wanna know if it’s ok. I just want to keep my baby piggies in my bedroom safe from my brother. If you know the answer please reply. xxx

    What to do if guinea pig has a upper respiratory infection? And is it curable?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Antibiotics from the vet - paediatric septrim is a good option and safer on their tummies than Baytril. Usually vets prescribe Metacam too. If they have clear signs of it don't delay - get them the meds asap.

    Fatty eye or pie eye is common amongst older guinea pigs. But it can occur in younger piggies, the cause is malnutrition or inbreed. I adopted a piggy wtih inbreed fatty eye. Nobody wanted him due to his eye condition, but he was the most loving boy I ever had. Also older piggies can get a little white spot in the middle of the eye. It is a warning for cataract. But here too it can be seen in young piggies. I have a young piggy with a white spot in the middle of both eyes. It is congenital cataract.Congenital cararact can also occur in humans (babies) and they will do a surgery to help the problem. But piggiy eyes are to small to operate. So I know my piggy will go blind in time. Thanks again for this informative video

      @SqueakDreams  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow thanks Vera that's really interesting! I'm not sure about malnutrition with Roxy 😂. Bless him it's always the unwanted ones who are super special! The congenital cataract is unfortunate but good that guinea pigs do not rely too much on their eyesight.

    • @Veertjevdv
      @Veertjevdv 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SqueakDreams I don't know how old Roxy is, but the first signs of fatty eye due to old age can, with some piggies, occur on the age of 3. I don't think it is malnutrition with Roxy, you take such good care of your furbabies. Wish I could share a picture of my lovely boy with you, he was such a lovely droopy eyed piglet ;)

      Hi Audrey. I find that my guinea has periods of activity and then rest throughout the day. I don't think they sleep like we do.
