    Eyballlicking can also just be a sign of affection appreciation 😊 Often the less dominant pig licks the dominant pigs eye. Sometimes they also do it to comfort another piggie. But yes, sometimes they do it to help cleaning the others face if that pig is sick or old :)

      @@siennalewis1088 Oh, the same with me! I feed them the same times each day, and so it's reinforced (without my trying to do so). 🤦 Lately I've been trying to get them to beg on their hind legs so they'll think there's a different way to ask for food. 😊

    Thank you for putting the poop eating out there! I’ve had piggies as a kid and even in college. I knew what they were doing but never knew the science behind it. (This is my first comment to you - sorta funny) It’s something that’s not spoken of outright so much. Love your videos!! I’ve begun fostering piggies recently from a local rescue after years of no animals. Learning a lot from
    you or confirming what I thought. Thank you!

    I find they are so in tune with anything off with each other. Bullseye and Barnaby had a blocked tear duct issue and their buddies always cleaned their eye for them. I also have recently found with the 2 girls who have abscesses on their chin ALL the other pigs want to clean their necks for them.

    • @WhileMyGuineaPigGentlyWheeks

      I find that too, Abby! When my Piggy Nugget became sick, Windy, her bonded “sister”, Was sitting with her more and acting kind of “off”. Like she was trying to tell me something. Which, Unfortunately, My Precious Nugget in fact was sick, and ended up having to be put down, which I had never had to make that decision before till then, a few days before Christmas. But yeah, I definitely agree & have found the same with my piggies.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love the little cartoon comments from the piggies! So cute and funny.
    My daughter and I brought home our piggies two days ago and one is already confusing the other by rumblestrutting and popcorning simultaneously! Such a weird little guy. 😆 They're also less afraid of the cats than they are of us, going right up to touch noses through the cage bars. (The cage is fully secure against the cats). Thank you for all your information, it's been really useful in getting ready to bring our guys home. 😀

    Eye licking is really interesting and I only saw it on one of my piggies. The oldest of my girls has an eye surgically removed due to an infection and after it was totally healed the second oldest started licking the missing eye. I thought it was kind of sweet behavior, it was like her friend tried to make it better.

    Brilliantly put together, you did a great job. Thank you for educating everyone in such an amusing way - love all the piggie captions - they make me smile. The only thing I haven't picked up on is the eye licking. Maybe its because my three girls are very protective of their own space and don't like one of the others coming close, they resort to nose bumping and if that fails they teeth chatter noisily, rear up and launch...... 🤔 I upgraded their space to 10'x5' so it rarely happens now. 🙂

    The squealing in fear.... I heard this awful squeal and ran to see what was going on... a wild rat was leaving the cage! It could fit through the wire of the c and c cage even if I have a lid on it. I was mortified! I thought the rat must have bitten my male guinea pig and that's what made him squeal so loud as I'd never heard that sound before. I then moved my male guinea pig into a cage that I didn't think the rat could get into. I also had a mother guinea pig in a separate cage with two babies. Her bars were too small for a rat to fit through, and yes it had a lid. In the mean time I was trying to catch the rat, bait the rat, or live trap it. I was sitting around on the computer and heard another loud squeal very much like the first one. I ran over to the guinea pigs and the rat was climbing on the wire outside of the mother guinea pigs cage, but it couldn't get IN to get her food but she still squealed in a loud desperate cry. The rat couldn't have bitten her so this squeal must have been a cry of fear! I scared the rat off both times and am still trying to catch or bait it. I hate to kill anything, but i can't risk it hurting one of the piggies. It also stole my cookies as chewed it's way through the lid. I dont care that it got cookies... just don't want it to get my baby piggies as they are so small and vulnerable. I am going to rat proof all my cages with wire mesh over the C and c and all have to have lids now. I live on a small hobby farm, and have horses too so rats and mice are sadly... a thing here. thanks for explaining that guinea pigs can and will squeal in fear as I had wondered.. did it grab my female through the bars and nip her? it was a horrendous cry to hear, but glad she alerted me so I could scare it away.

    Just another tip...one reason a guinea pig will bite u hard is if they demand food! Sometimes if I don't feed my piggies food but I let them nibble on my hand after a while they will get annoyed I don't have food they start to bite hard but it is rare but sometimes it penetrates the skin

    One of my girls squeals a lot. I call it her complaining voice as it almost always means something like "Mom! My sister is touching me again!" Percy loves to snuggle. Trinket does not. Part of me thinks that Percy (the dominant one) just likes to pick on her sister.

    My son got two male guinea pigs for Christmas, called Gizmo and Fluffy. Gizmo seems to be a little bit more timid, but for like the 3rd time now, he has bitten and pierced skin causing blood and it really hurt. Today he got me right beside the nailbed on my thumb. I am very nervous towards picking them up yet and we've had them since 18th of December. I don't want to scare them off by annoying them, but myself and my son are dying to have little cuddles with them and bond with them. I'll talk to them every time I'm in the room where their cage is. Gizmo will take food that I'm holding so I know that's a good sign. Fluffy is getting closer and then just runs away.
    When we first saw the "popcorning" I was convinced our piggies were half guinea pig and half kangaroo haha But I'm glad it's a normal behaviour. I nearly got sick at them eating their own poop though, however I think the other day I saw one of them with a poop in their mouth.
    I love the little piggies comments throughout the video, you make it all look so very easy. But I am learning so much already, so thank you.

      You're welcome! 😊 Young piggies usually find the water bottle by themselves and sometimes it can seem like they are not drinking much because they get a lot of water from their daily veg. Make sure the bottle is at a good height for him/her and you could try showing him/her how it works to encourage! For introductions - use a neutral space, with hay, food and open ended hideys. If you look up guinea pig bonding or guinea pig introductions you'll find a lot of videos 😀 best of luck!

    Two out of my three girls always seem to have scuds/scabs on them. I've definitely noticed one being a lot more dominant than the others. The smallest one doesn't have a scratch on her but the other two seem to always have these very minor injuries. They are very vocal sometimes and I'm wondering if they are fighting without me realising/seeing? They have a new cage that we're making for them which will give them more room, I'm hoping with some more space they'll get on better 🤞🏼

    I got a new cage for my boys (brothers Cadbury, Marshmallow, and Ninja) with a large cardboard tube, a stick bridge, and a plastic walk-in barn, and Cadbury was wheeking, zooming and popcorning for about an hour. Marshmallow stood up, saw the outside of the cage, squeaked and ran for cover. Ninja hides in the barn and pops out grabs a veggie or treat and runs back inside to eat. But the strangest behavior I’ve seen is Cadbury climbing on Ninja, which I’m going to assume is a dominance behavior because Ninja was away for a few days to see how he’d do with the other older piggies that he’s supposed to be caged with at my daughter’s. My daughter’s one female piggie, Phoebe, for some reason destroyed 2 water bottles from aggressive drinking. The replacement glass bottle didn’t give, but she went through an entire large bottle in less than a day. It takes the boys a week to go through that much filtered water.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, sounds like they LOVE the new cage!! I bet the popcorning was so fun to watch! The mounting/humping is fairly normal dominance behaviour yes :) interesting about the water bottles - I use the glass ones, which still such be changed everyday even if they don't drink it all 😊

      @@SqueakDreams Hopefully the boys and I will be going home (180 miles) in the next few days. When we get there, there’s 7 surprises for them: 3 brand new beds/cozy sacks, 2 new ceramic food bowls, and 2 wooden chew toys. I’ll have my work cut out for me as I’ll be making them a few cage liners and a bunch of pee pads. I found the hammock stand you have for your piggies and it’s about $75 USD, which I’ll have to wait for. It’ll be interesting to see their behavior with the liners and pee pads compared to Aspen shavings.

    Hi I have a guinea pig that is 5 months old and is keep hiding under stuff like a bed cover or even goes under fleece blanket however dose not want to hide under houses or tunnels . My guinea pig dose lives alone for the reason he is always picked by other guinea pigs and it only gets out from the hides when it eats or grabs drunk.... is there anyway to help my guinea pig to be less shy ?

    • @SqueakDreams

      You could try using liners with sides on to prevent fleece digging or that clip on somehow, it sounds like he is nervous and also gotten into the bad habitat of digging up the liner bless him. You can work on taming tips from my taming videos (links in description) to help him be more brave!

I tap again and again AND HE STILL DOESN'T MOVE... at this point Im freaking out so I move his hide and MF STILL DOESN'T MOVE I tap him with the hide and he finally moves. One of my piggies I had years ago, he hates the jingle of bells. My other pigs didn't care but he HATED them. I was at the vet once sitting in a chair and it was a small little house type of vet place and everytine someone would walk in, a bell would jiggle and he would cause quite a scene in the carrier in my lap. I felt bad because I knew he hate it but there was nothing I could really do about it and it was cold and windy outside. So I couldn't go there, plus I wouldn't hear my name getting called. Everyone was looking at me and the angry pig in my lap. 🤣

      I'm so sorry for your loss, it's always hard but when you have a single piggie left it can be tough on them too. When Sprite was alone she lived in the living room where we could interact with her more for 3 weeks or so until we got new piggie friends for her. I would say don't leave it too long and do think about whether you get a youngster or whether adopting an older piggie might be better depending on your situation and owning pigs in the future :)

      I'm so sorry for your loss. What you saw is fairly common for piggies to do, if the eyelicking is show of affection we could see it as them saying goodbye to their friend. Whether or not they understand the passing of a cage mate or not is another question, they certainly don't see it from our perspective, but I feel they know and understand on some level. They are social creatures who live in herds and with that will come instincts for how to behave and act when family members/mates have passed away. Signs of grief and depression after a cage mate passing are also reported by many piggie owners. ❤
