So glad to have an updated video on this as it’s such an important part of guinea pig care! We’ve experienced lots of health issues with piggies over the years, and as you can see today we monitor Willow’s ovarian cysts and she has been getting treated for an eye infection - fortunately this is looking much better now! I’d love it if people could share what health problems they have dealt with for their piggies in the comments, so others can read and learn. 🌻
I felt bad in the beginning as poor Roxy was getting smacked around a bit! hehe Poor lil girl is just finding her place amongst the herd! And as do I , lovely Willow has older lady problems - my poor sweet girl! I know that it is very common in piggies, and I see that you do the very best for her to keep her comfortable and happy. I don't know why, but from the very first time you brought her home and introduced us to her, she became my favorite. She seemed like such a good mama to Twiglet, and is just a sweet, happy little wheeker! I also love that lil "naked" patch under her chin. I know what it's from, but somehow it makes her cuter!
Is it hard to get them to do there health checks?Should I just place my piggies on a table so they don't run away while the health checks are happening?
As a new piggy mom, I've watched this video several times, and have started doing weekly health checks. I have two boars, one middle aged and one senior. So far so good! ❤️😍❤️
Thank you for covering this topic. As a new piggy owner (first time for everything)... and my piggies are older (3.5 and 5.5 years)... I know nothing about piggy care and this video was extremely helpful. I took notes and plan to watch it again. Also the one covering caring for Senior piggies was GREAT! I'm trying to learn as much as I can very quickly so I don't miss a symptom should one of them become ill. Thank you Sarah for sharing your wealth of knowledge and experience, and doing it so pleasantly. And those piggies of yours... wow! They are awesome! Be blessed!
We've had 4 guinea pigs over the years about 30 years ago, and they were all fab pets. I had no idea about health checks and all the other subjects Sarah brings up in her very informative videos. I'm currently swatting up in all aspects in guinea pig care, as we are getting two babies at the end of the month, I'm excited like a child again - thank you squeak dreams 😘
This made me smile so much to hear you are getting piggies again! Guinea pig care has come a long way and there are so many great resources out there, I'm glad you find my videos useful! Congrats on the new piggies, I hope they settle in well! ❤️😊
Checking the teeth is always such a nightmare because if I out my hand anywhere near their face or mouth they decide they need to give my hand a long and thorough bath 😂😂
my guinea pig died today. she had just turned 6 in july, and now my other guinea pig is alone. i gave her a squishmallow but lucy is the one that passed today, i walked in my room when waking up excited to see them and i thought lucy was sleeping. i touched her and she didn’t wake up. i started worrying are crying and i felt if she was breathing. she was so heavy i knew it was time. this is the day after i got mad that i had to keep feeding them and i feel so bad.
What if my piggys ear has a dried up blood spot? And like a scab it looks like it could have got scratched but then it looks a little white but then I’ don’t know I my first 2 piggys I bought had ringworm so I had to return them and these 2 are perfect baby females and only Bella has a dried up blood spot on her ear aswell as a scab but I hope it isn’t ringworm again
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! :P you helped me so much you were so in-depth and so helpful I am a new guinea pig owner and I’ve never done health checks before and I know that you have to so this is so so helpful for me thank you so much I can’t express my feelings how much I appreciated this video! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🥺😇
Love your videos. Just recently subscribed and have been watching through your videos every day in preparation for our two new baby Guinea pigs that we will pick up next week. You are very informative and make it easy to understand. Thank you for all the help you have given.
Very helpful! Glad Willow's getting better, pinkeye/conjunctivitis isn't any fun. I lost one pig to glaucoma, one to old age, the others to mostly unknown causes :( I did try to treat the piggie with cancer, but she HATED the eyedrops and they were mostly palliative anyway.
@@SqueakDreams You're welcome. Thanks for posting this video, and as always, I love seeing footage of the girls. Thanks to you and other piggie people, I feel like I know so much more, and could do so much better if I ever own guinea pigs again.
I just rescued a guinea pig from a person who kept her is a pet store cage and didn't give her veggies I don't think (I'm getting another in 7 days) at first her pee was yellow and her poop was in clumps but its starting to clear up (I got her 3 days ago)
How often do you clean your piggies bedding and does the fleece get very smelly between cleans? My daughters piggies have hay as bedding which we just dispose of but the fleece looks so lovely and cosy, but i am assuming it creates lots of washing? thanks
Im adopting guine pigs!! But theres one issue… rescues are hard to find for me. I wannt to make sure i examine a guinea pig at the pet store REALLY well before i adopt.
Thanks Sarah-a really helpful and informative video brilliant! I do always weigh and health check all 7 of my girls every week and it takes quite a while to do everyone! ;-) x
One of my piggies has been scratching a lot so I took him to the vets and got a spot on treatment, I've only had them for a week now though so they're still super scared, not quite sure how I'm going to handle them to give them the treatment x
I keep a scale and a journal and weigh my piggies every Sunday and I bought a stethoscope to check their lungs every week too my oldest boy (only one year) coughs once or twice a day and we don’t know why so I check them often and try to get as little dust as possible in their hay
That is lovely to hear you are looking out for your piggies health so well! Some coughing is normal, especially if they eat too fast, but best to monitor it 😊
I have 2 guinea pigs, and they are female btw. And their poops come out with water so the poop is healthy but it comes with water and one came with a milk looking substance. anyone know what it may be?
Due to normal checks i caught a cyst that turned out to be connected to my girls lymph node which also was starting to cause cataracts. Because the swelling came back double the size of the original cyst we are currently waiting on testing to see if it is lymphoma positive. Her cataracts have sped up suddenly also. My poor baby girl shes only 1.5 yrs old
Yes haha, she is a fluffball! Keeping an eye on her though as recent hair loss and thinning suggests ovarian cysts. They are so common in older piggies unfortunately 😞
@@SqueakDreams Awww - my older ladies had it too - on each side there would be that thinning patch. I used to gently kiss that area sometimes. I have always been unapologetically addicted to kissing piggies!
So I rescued a baby piggie and she’s like just over 2 weeks old not even old enough to be away from her momma and I have a 7/8 month old boy I wanna put them together but I’m afraid he will hurt her being that young any advice? She will be 3 weeks monday
Yes, please don't put a baby female in with a male unless he is neutered (and passed the quarantine period where he is safe to be put with females). She will get pregnant and it is not safe for her at such a young age. They can live together when he has been neutered but until them keep them apart. The baby girl should be fine eating food etc but she will be lonely, can she be put with another female instead?

when you bring a piggy to the vet do you bring them in together to avoid separating them and causing anxiety?

Does anyone use a good app to keep track of piggies history and reminders? Or do you just keep a notebook journal and document everything?

how much should weight a guinea pig?
I feel like most of Lyra's weight is her adorable hair! hehe

My two guinea pigs are 2 months old and I was wondering what the normal weight should be as I have only had them a week so I have not Weighed them yet
Max. weight, is 120g is a healthy weight for smaller piggies. But they should have increased from that. If not then keep weighing them :)

What if the pee has crystals?
Hi! Im getting 3 guinea pigs by next month! I had a question. Where did you get that weight and how much was it? ❤️✨
Hey, congrats on getting piggies! The scales are just some basic kitchen scales I ordered from Amazon, for about £12 😊
@@SqueakDreams Thank you so much! ❤️
How old are they when they become full grown and should weigh between 900-1200 grams?
Great question! Most piggies are fully grown between 8 and 12 months old 😊 it's normal for females to be a little lighter than males too.
Do u have to brush their teeth?
Can you reply to this comment with the link or name of the scale you use?
Hey there - the scale is in my amazon storefront, it's basically just a cheap £10 kitchen scale from Amazon :)
@@SqueakDreams thanks so much!
