I had two of my boys neutered by my local exotic vet, one was done abdominally (midline) and he unfortunately didn't recover from the surgery. Having said that I think it depends on the vet - you're so lucky having such cavy-savvy vets nearby.

I saw u cleaning with ur hands, that's good because i also do like that ,my mother scolds me whenever i do that, but i say we have soap and water. So good to see someone like me. ❣️🥰😇

Glad Nacho is doing great. Neither of mine lost any of their personality. They are just a tad more mellow. I feel it is worth it. We even have a shelter that neuters all male animals before adoption. George, who had one tiny abscess, was my first boar to be neutered. The vet did start with a scrotal, but discovered he had one testicle that failed to descend and what was in the scrotum was in fact a fatty deposit. So it ended with him having both. He healed well and has since become a Idaho Spud potato pancake. My cost here is expensive. Boars were around 300 for everything, including consult and follow up and meds. Females without any issues is 400. This is US dollars, with an exotics vet. My vet doesn't charge if there are any complications for anything except any extra unusual supplies. I love this exotics vet as even though he is a bit more costly, he does great with guinea pigs. He helped me save Oreo from ovarian cancer and Buttercup almost full GI stasis due to bloat. I also have a ongoing script for Loxicom with my vet. I have a bottle at home so I can medicate when needed without the wait. It can make a huge difference. Especially with my old ladies.

18:40 My poor Piggie had some complications after his neuter but this is what I had received in the US for just around 1000 dollars. And countless hours of feedings, and worrying, and driving to the vet, and waiting, and staring at him. - pre-op visit - neuter - post op “last minute/emergency” visit (during reg office hours) - post op Emergency overnight stay (and whatever meds/fluids came with that) - post op general meds - post op extra meds (more pain and Gi meds I believe) - I think I also had a probiotic too - critical care (not from vet)
He hated it! But by day 5 (the last day... typical), he actually didn't fight it so bad and I even caught him giving the syringe a nibble after he had his dose, wanting a bit more 🙄😂

Nacho is super cute . Got my Milo neutered but it didn't went well . He developed a zyst that unfortunately is in a very difficult area to operate . He was put on antibiotics again and on the 30 th of June we see if the zyst can be removed . He is a Swiss teddy boy and went through so much before I adopted him he ist a special care guinea pig with bumble feet 🐾🐾 and I love him to bits . He is ruffly a year and 8 months old . Truffles his girlfriend loves him to bits she is 5 months old and a multi colours Sheba breed . I do all I can for Milo Your nacho will love the girls so much . Thanks for your videos ❤❤

This video's timing is uncanny and helpful! My close friend recently found a male guinea pig abandoned in a park. He's not nuetered and I only have female piggies, so now I feel confident in knowing what questions to ask when getting him nuetered, then introducing him to my females.

I came up with a trick to give medicine to my piggies. When you give pellets, there is always some grit leftover in the bag. I keep that grit in a little container. I put the medicine in the syringe, I dip the top of the syringe in the grit. The piggies love the taste of the pellets and will nibble on the the syringe. 😁 I have a rescue piggy with terminal cancer and have to give her painmeds everyday. I don't have to take her out of the cage to give her the meds. Glad the surgery went well 😊

I did have one male who was healthy going into the surgery but at pick up he was dead. I was with the vet as she tried to bring him back but he was gone. Another male got an infection like you mentioned. The vet was very experienced.

I had my 2 boys neutered when they were 6 months old. They had the abdominal surgery too. My experience was that they ended up fighting a fair bit and I was so worried that I would have to give one of them up so what I did was get them out for floor time and I completely spritzed the cage clean. The floor, walls, doors, ramps, water bottle, food and hay holder EVERYTHING!! And they became brothers again. Also my little 2p advise if you have wood shaving like I did and you have your boy neutered my vet told me to go for fleece liners as it will not irritate the wound and I've never gone back to wood shaving since
So glad to hear Nacho's surgery went well and he is healing nicely. That bunpy bit is keloidal scar tissue, a bit of extra collagen from the skin healing. My dogs and I have had similar tiny ones at our incisions. I learned something new with this, esp with the other surg option and the 'body design/sanitary' issue. Also, is it me or does Nacho have the cutest upsidedown 'heart outline' when he faces directly to the camera??

My girl is going to holly house tomorrow for a flank spay. Feel so lucky to have such knowledgable vets close by. Harriet will be doing the spay but I’ve previously seen Agata for teeth issues with one of my boys. Glad Nacho is doing well. I’m considering a neuter for my youngest boy who’s newly paired with my oldest recently bereaved boy so he’s prepared for the future…so thank you for sharing your experience.
Nacho seems to be doing great. He`ll be happy with the girls. I had 13 male guinea pigs total neutered. All at 6 months or older. None died. Some people neuter them at 3 weeks. A vet I trust said that´s much more risky. They should be at least 4 months old. Both techniques: abdominal and scrotum have been employed on my guinea pigs. At first I thought about seperating by sex. But because of possible pregnancy complications in case one escaped I decided neutering is worth the risk. Females other one year would need c-section after all.
This process is exactly the same as what I went through with my boy in February this year. The lumpy bit is normal, my piggy had the same and I asked about it and they said it was normal. Good video 👍🏻
Ahh, gorgeous Nacho….So pleased it all went well ❤ Also, very excited that you got Agata (I’m guessing!) to do the op - she is completely amazing and we always try to see her (our pigs love her too!) Her new method for spaying females is incredible - ours have all been back to normal within 24 hours (apart from having bald patches on their sides 😁) Agata recently neutered Percy for us too, before he went to his lovely new home with 4 new girlfriends. The op itself went really well, but being a young, lively boy, he decided it would be fun to chew out his stitches, which meant a couple of extra trips back to the vet for antibiotics and extra pain medication 😬. Apart from the extra meds, we were also advised to give him plenty of enrichment to keep him amused in his cage (cue a trip to Pets at Home!) and to keep the stitches trimmed as short as possible once he’d nibbled (the vet offered to do this for us). It improved in a week or so, just a minor potential complication to be aware of (we’re hoping he’s given up his habit of chewing everything now he has some girls to keep him company 😁) So pleased that Nacho made a speedy recovery. Not too long now until he gets to mingle with the ladies…😍
Yes Agata was our vet, she was fantastic! Did you have your girls spayed when they were young or older? Bless little Percy nibbling his stitches! I'm sure the girls are providing plenty of enrichment 😃😂
Our older girl, Winnie (and her sister Nellie, who’s no longer with us) was spayed when she was about 4 years old because of ovarian cysts; however, when we adopted Pandora, aged 8 months, Agata suggested we spay her as a precaution, as so many sows develop cysts at some point (which she’d done to her own guinea pigs too). As a younger pig, I swear Pandora barely noticed she’d had the op! I would absolutely agree with Agatha’s approach of spaying females when they’re young - especially as she told us she had never lost a pig on the operating table since changing to the new way of carrying out the op. Such a different experience to 5 years ago when we lost Bonky to post-op complications after she was spayed in the ‘old’ way.
And yes, I’ve heard from the rescue who helped us to rehome Percy that he is currently living his best life! 😂 (also very fortunate that both girls had been spayed when the people we adopted Percy from mis-sexed him. That could all have gone very badly…😬)
I've had the new spay procedure (ovarian-something) done for my girls - they were too aggressive after puberty so to help them have partners I've had to get it done. It was very easy, and my vet (in the U.S.) actuall keeps them a couple days to make sure they are healing and doing well, so the hard part is definitely the first couple days, which they take care of. So it definitely is a bit more costly for me, but with the vets giving them around the clock care for 3 full days, it is very worth it. I've never had to get a piglet neutered though so thanks for sharing! And I'm happy to hear about the different techniques so I can choose one that best suits my situation if need be. There is a new method of castration of guinea pigs that is done under local anesthesia instead of general that results in much less stress for gp as no gas is used
My pair of boys got neutered so they could live with the female piggy I adopted, and the process was incredibly smooth. The shelter I adopted all three from regularly works with a particular exotics vet and the whole thing was so routine that I sent them the payment ($200 for the pair so yeah, bit pricey in USA) and a volunteer picked them up mid-morning. They were both back by lunch, none the worse for wear besides being a bit spacey from the meds wearing off. They were quickly up and about and eating regularly (and pooping regularly) before a few hours. XD After that, I kept an eye on the stitched area for signs of bleeding, inflammation, etc, but it was all perfectly fine. They were joined by the female a few weeks later and all three are doing great!

Hace ya 2 años y ambos me los entregaron a los pocos días de la operación....!!!fue todo fenomenal y no tuve mayores problemas!!lo que les costó más, fue llegar a vivir en el mismo recinto....😅 pero ahora se llevan fenomenal..,no pueden estar el uno sin la otra!!! muchas gracias por tus vídeos,un besote enorme!!!

I love your videos! My Joe Joe is very sick. Your comments on Metacam made me feel much better. My vet had given him quite a strong dose. Now I feel better that at least he shouldn’t be in too much pain. Again, love you and your piggies.
Thank you Laura and yes, (depending on weight of course), but up to 1 ml of 1.5 mg/ml metacam can be given twice daily at the highest end of the scale. Best wishes and healing vibes for you Joe Joe, I hope he pulls through ❤

I had my 2 boys neutered when they were 6 months old. They had the abdominal surgery too. My experience was that they ended up fighting a fair bit and I was so worried that I would have to give one of them up so what I did was get them out for floor time and I completely spritzed the cage clean. The floor, walls, doors, ramps, water bottle, food and hay holder EVERYTHING!! And they became brothers again. Also my little 2p advise if you have wood shaving like I did and you have your boy neutered my vet told me to go for fleece liners as it will not irritate the wound and I've never gone back to wood shaving since

So glad to hear Nacho's surgery went well and he is healing nicely. That bunpy bit is keloidal scar tissue, a bit of extra collagen from the skin healing. My dogs and I have had similar tiny ones at our incisions. I learned something new with this, esp with the other surg option and the 'body design/sanitary' issue. Also, is it me or does Nacho have the cutest upsidedown 'heart outline' when he faces directly to the camera??
Awww, I'm so happy Nacho's surgery went well. I hope he makes a quick recovery. Thank you for all the information. There are only 2 vets in my area too and consultation at my vet costs £50, it is expensive. Luckily we haven't needed the vet yet. I may need to look into getting one of my boys neutered at some stage so the info you've given is VERY helpful, thank you!

My girl is going to holly house tomorrow for a flank spay. Feel so lucky to have such knowledgable vets close by. Harriet will be doing the spay but I’ve previously seen Agata for teeth issues with one of my boys. Glad Nacho is doing well. I’m considering a neuter for my youngest boy who’s newly paired with my oldest recently bereaved boy so he’s prepared for the future…so thank you for sharing your experience.

I had 13 male guinea pigs total neutered. All at 6 months or older. None died. Some people neuter them at 3 weeks. A vet I trust said that´s much more risky. They should be at least 4 months old. Both techniques: abdominal and scrotum have been employed on my guinea pigs.
At first I thought about seperating by sex. But because of possible pregnancy complications in case one escaped I decided neutering is worth the risk. Females other one year would need c-section after all.
This process is exactly the same as what I went through with my boy in February this year. The lumpy bit is normal, my piggy had the same and I asked about it and they said it was normal. Good video 👍🏻

Ahh, gorgeous Nacho….So pleased it all went well ❤ Also, very excited that you got Agata (I’m guessing!) to do the op - she is completely amazing and we always try to see her (our pigs love her too!) Her new method for spaying females is incredible - ours have all been back to normal within 24 hours (apart from having bald patches on their sides 😁) Agata recently neutered Percy for us too, before he went to his lovely new home with 4 new girlfriends. The op itself went really well, but being a young, lively boy, he decided it would be fun to chew out his stitches, which meant a couple of extra trips back to the vet for antibiotics and extra pain medication 😬. Apart from the extra meds, we were also advised to give him plenty of enrichment to keep him amused in his cage (cue a trip to Pets at Home!) and to keep the stitches trimmed as short as possible once he’d nibbled (the vet offered to do this for us). It improved in a week or so, just a minor potential complication to be aware of (we’re hoping he’s given up his habit of chewing everything now he has some girls to keep him company 😁) So pleased that Nacho made a speedy recovery. Not too long now until he gets to mingle with the ladies…😍
Yes Agata was our vet, she was fantastic! Did you have your girls spayed when they were young or older? Bless little Percy nibbling his stitches! I'm sure the girls are providing plenty of enrichment 😃😂
Our older girl, Winnie (and her sister Nellie, who’s no longer with us) was spayed when she was about 4 years old because of ovarian cysts; however, when we adopted Pandora, aged 8 months, Agata suggested we spay her as a precaution, as so many sows develop cysts at some point (which she’d done to her own guinea pigs too). As a younger pig, I swear Pandora barely noticed she’d had the op! I would absolutely agree with Agatha’s approach of spaying females when they’re young - especially as she told us she had never lost a pig on the operating table since changing to the new way of carrying out the op. Such a different experience to 5 years ago when we lost Bonky to post-op complications after she was spayed in the ‘old’ way.
And yes, I’ve heard from the rescue who helped us to rehome Percy that he is currently living his best life! 😂 (also very fortunate that both girls had been spayed when the people we adopted Percy from mis-sexed him. That could all have gone very badly…😬)

I've had the new spay procedure (ovarian-something) done for my girls - they were too aggressive after puberty so to help them have partners I've had to get it done.
It was very easy, and my vet (in the U.S.) actuall keeps them a couple days to make sure they are healing and doing well, so the hard part is definitely the first couple days, which they take care of. So it definitely is a bit more costly for me, but with the vets giving them around the clock care for 3 full days, it is very worth it.
I've never had to get a piglet neutered though so thanks for sharing! And I'm happy to hear about the different techniques so I can choose one that best suits my situation if need be. Loved this video!

@@SqueakDreams They are doing great! One little one is with a pair of older ones, but the other is now in her own enclosure, so she'll need (I hope a long-haired?) boyfriend very soon! Haha. I've always loved long-haired piglets, but never had one. But after seeing your beautiful new boy I thought maybe I should actively look at the rescue this time!

My pair of boys got neutered so they could live with the female piggy I adopted, and the process was incredibly smooth. The shelter I adopted all three from regularly works with a particular exotics vet and the whole thing was so routine that I sent them the payment ($200 for the pair so yeah, bit pricey in USA) and a volunteer picked them up mid-morning. They were both back by lunch, none the worse for wear besides being a bit spacey from the meds wearing off. They were quickly up and about and eating regularly (and pooping regularly) before a few hours. XD
After that, I kept an eye on the stitched area for signs of bleeding, inflammation, etc, but it was all perfectly fine. They were joined by the female a few weeks later and all three are doing great!
