    1) Spend time with them. Let them smell you and talk to them.
    2) Set a routine. Cleaning day, feeding time.
    3) Hand feeding. Let them come to you. They'll recognize your scent with food and realize you're not there to harm them.
    4) Take them out (using a tunnel or a blanket as chasing them around can stress then out) and give them lap time. Give them a blanket to cuddle in to so they don't feel so exposed.
    5) Expose them to sounds.
    6) Let them learn and see from the older pigs that you're ok. Taking an older/ tamer pig out and them being ok with that shows the youngins that you're not harmful.
    7) Bond with them using floor time and give them their own space on the floor.

I keep my boys in my bedroom w/ me bc I've been trying to cut back on my power bill. Usually, they're out in the living room. So, they're completely familiar w/ their surroundings. The living room leads into the kitchen & yeah, I made a cage big enough to reach out to that room too. Anyways, I've noticed that if I leave the bedroom for too long (beside the living room), I keep the door open, they hear me fumbling around in the kitchen, & I'm apparently not feeding them fast enough for their tastes, they'll try to escape. It doesn't happen alot. But they're pretty funny. I leave little Christmasy type lights on for them & the radio too when I'm gone. The less giddy one popcorns alot more when I come back from leaving. I think he misses me the most. The other one just kinda waits to warm up. He's the one who's constantly popcorning. Their hobbies include: watching TV, eating, pooping & peeing, bugging each other, being mysterious, cutting my hair, cutting each other's hair, I believe fighting off my sleep paralysis, picking up on human emotions, putting up w/ their human & etc

I'm Sorry Sarah I didn't hear anything you said in your video because I was completely distracted by the major cuteness overload going on in this video!!! 💖💖💖💖. Seriously though, such a great video and so helpful! My baby, Prinsesa, was so shy at first and very spazzy but now she really has come out of her shell. It just takes a ton of patience and love. Sending lots of love to you and the girls!!!! 💖💖💖

My way of taming the guinea pigs goes back to when I was a child in the 1980s. To put it simply, I did nothing extraordinary. I just picked them up and put them on my chest while lying down in the living room. There was no instruction needed. They were exceptionally friendly and trusting. Pure and simple.

How are you able to keep them contained with such a low barrier? My son has two, and one of ours has to be a genius, or could possibly the next Great Houdini! In the beginning being that this was our first time with guinea pigs, Molly(the guinea pig) was nice enough to ease us into her capabilities, by throwing me a few softballs to build my confidence. Her first trick, was using her weight against the cage door to open it up. So I improvised a new lock to prevent her from being able to open the door whenever she wanted. Her next trick, was in their play area on the floor, she figured how to position herself in the corner of a 10-12” inch barrier wall(similar to the wire on the cage) and shimmied her way out. So once again, I improvise the setup and raised the barrier. That only lasted for about 2 wks, before she started using one of their plastic hides as a step, and repeated her previous technic to shimmy her way out. This doesn’t happen immediately, that’s why I don’t think she’s intentionally pushing stuff against the barrier to use as a step. I now have everything mounted to the floor, but I seriously doubt I’ve won this war. The way things are going, she’ll probably make a shovel and dig her way out next. LoL she’s too funny

Great tips and video:) you are definitely right about the routine. Once I got in a routine with mine it helped a lot in taming them. Now they can't wait for me to clean their cage out every night bc then they know it's meal time after that:)

I love this video. Perfect timing for me to be watching it. I have a piggy, Lily. She just turned 4 years old. She lost her cage mate about 3 weeks ago. We all had time to grieve our loss so I decided to get Lily a baby female piggy (she will never replace Rosie but I think she will be happy with a friend). Lily's friend will be 4 weeks 3 days when we get her. Her name is Maggie. We are all set up with a cage to put Maggie in for 2 weeks quarantine. And then I have a kiddie pool to introduce them. I'm hoping and praying that they will be okay together. Please wish us luck. I am excited for me and for Lily hopefully it will go smoothly. 💖💕

Congrats on the new piggies! Young pigs can take a while to get over their instincts to run! Some never do, but as they grow up they get slower, and you'll get better at catching and handling 😁

That´s a very nice video and very helpful tips! To add, after they got accustomed to get treaties from hand, we started putting treaties on hand and they have to step on hand to get them. It helps them a lot to get comfortable with us=))

The most tame thing my guinea pigs did so far is stand up against my lap for a treat. And I’m starting with training, so far the more skittish one is accelerating drastically surprisingly. She’s already starting to stand up on her hind feet for treats, but not all the time. Just thought it would be nice to let you know your techniques are working.

I finally got the chance to rescue a small pack but I need help knowing how to bond/tame them as a group. TH-camrs talk about taming 1 piggie but not a newly adopted pack. I also want to know how long you waited before trying to hold them? And if the basic taming tricks still work with newly adopted packs rather than just individuals? They're doing great so far but when one gets scared they all get scared and I get worried thinking that if they're all scared that might prevent them from adjusting?
I need all the advice I can get! Thx :)
Also thank you for this video! You've answered a lot of other questions I had that no one has really discussed on YT. You're totally awesome!

Hi Natalie - thank you so for your comment, I'm like you like the videos! And congratulations on getting piggies!! Depending on how scared they are I would say 1 - 2 weeks before attempting to pick them up. And when you do so, start by encouraging them into a cuddle sack or similar (beanie hats work!) and scoop up the whole thing with them in. Yes the basic tips do work with groups as well as individuals. They have the in-built instinct to respond to other herd members but as they get used to you you'll realise which ones are naturally a little bit braver, then these will actually encourage the others ones to be more confident :)

I have a bit of a struggle, I’ve just adopted 3 young piggies to bond with my herd of 11 Sows, so their cage is really large making taming difficult, but I can sit in it which helps. But because I have so many guinea pigs, they try and bombard me to get the food meaning that I can’t just leave my hand out for the shy piggies! So taming seems to take much much longer with a big cage!

Me too. He scares me too when he takes off running 😂 . I told him today "look, I know I scare you when I swoop down, but you scare me too when you take off running like that, so we're gonna have to work on this together" . He didn't listen to well. I get near the cage and he runs so fast. What if he does that when I get him out got laptime, and I can't catch him?
