A lot of UK roads used to have a middle lane for passing in either direction, as traffic got heavier most of them were phased out or turned into sections of two lanes in one direction and one in the other. The scene with the Cortina passing the truck then pulling back in to avoid a head on was quite common back then. Some roads in Norfolk still operate this system where some older drivers will still wait for a truck in front to tell you when it's safe to pull out and pass.
