I grew up with my earliest tennis memories being the Borg v McEnroe wimbledon finals, their incredible rivalry was timeless beyond compare... and yet sadly short lived. McEnroe defeated him in 4 sets in 1981 avenging his loss to the Swede the previous year, and after losing to him at the US Open Borg retired stating he had lost his passion for tennis. He was just 26, but he began playing at the top level when he was only 15, winning his davis cup debut match when Sweden played New Zealand. After 11 years with 6 French open and 5 consecutive Wimbledon titles to his name, he was burnt out. Before McEnroe's career had ended he had claimed 7 Grand Slam tournaments of his own. I absolutely loved Borg, and found McEnroe irritating at first, but he grew on me quickly almost for no other reason than I just couldn't get enough of him! It was him alone that had me following Tennis for the next 20 years subsequently watching greats like Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Andre Agassi... I then lost interest myself not long after watching that era. I must say though that I went to the 2001 Hopman Cup in Perth Western Australia to watch Richard Fromberg of Australia play a youthful and extremely technical pony-tailed Swiss lad who was ranked 22 in the world, I never heard of him before the tournament. He went on to win the Cup with his number 1 ranked team mate Martina Hingis. His name was Roger Federer. Gee don't I bloody go on...anyway, back to J-Mac and that it's interesting to note that Borg understood where McEnroe was coming from with the tantrums, Borg himself had a terrible temper on the court as a youth until it was extricated from him by his coach prior to entering the ATP limelight. He saw J-Mac's fury as self driving, a tool of his own impetus, fuel for his fire. Yes McEnroe was very much one who engaged in a lot of gamesmanship at key moments, that was ever so apparent, but his tantrums I believe had everything to do with what was inside John, and nothing to do with his opponent. Jesus I miss McEnroe, he is my favourite player of all time, his antics only surpassed by his mesmerising serving action, his speed to the net, the skilful volleys and most of all his all-encompassing passion.

Remember hearing this on Doctor Demento; just for giggles, I turned up the volume when "John" drank his OJ--sort of aural instant replay--and definitely heard a slurping sound. IR didn't exist like we know it today back when McEnroe was the terror of decent society; what would it have done to him to be properly reproved?
Maybe not a good thing after all; he'd have mellowed, so we wouldn't have funny things like this. He's why I was a Bjorn Borg fan.
There is not a font large enough for "John"'s outbursts; this is absolutely classic!

Understandable the Brits found John McEnroe annoying. Love the sketch. Showing how much of a sore loser and a crybaby McEnroe was whenever he displayed his terrible sportsmanship on the tennis court.

Yes, he was a great player with an obnoxious personality, a bit like Alex Higgins in snooker, except without Higgins' occasional charm.

Bu.t out.burst were only for bad line calls that his own eyes saw. A bit like having something stolen & who likes that?

I’m a Brit and I loved him. Great player and great character. Very intelligent guy.

McEnroe was a genius, and the most charismatic player in tennis history.
